The gossan developed from the Whim Creek Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide deposit, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, occurs near the top of a ridge in a dissected plateau 01 moderate relief. The gossan is characterized by the abundance of secondary ore minerals which indicates that it is relatively immature, due to climatic conditions and erosional stripping.The abundant presence of secondary carbonates indicates that the low pH generally resulting from sulphide oxidation has been neutralized, probably by the buffering effect of carbonatcs and silicates. Fe, Cu, Pb, 'Ag and Sn have been enriched in the gossan relative to the primary ore, and Mn, Ti, Co and Ni have been strongly depleted; other elements have remained substantially unchanged. The gossan has a strong gcochemical signature characterized by high Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Sb, Sn, Ag and Mo coutents. Boxwork textures are poorly developed, bu't the gossan has other diagnostic mineralogical features including sulphide inclusions in quartz and the presence of residual cassiterite.

The Mutooroo copper mine is one of a number of deposits that have been evaluated by Adelaide and Wallaroo Fertilizers Ltd as a source of feed for the production of high- purity copper oxide at their Burra plant. For this deposit, the technique of solution mining or in-situ leaching appeared ideal. The Mutooroo production circuit and the results of the process optimization and environmental monitoring programmes are outlined. At the end of the experimental period described here, the production liquor typically contained I g/litre copper, yield- ing in excess of 5 t/month of cement product containing about 80 per cent copper. The environmental monitoring programme provided clear evidence that there had been no un- acceptable alteration to the properties of the groundwater in the country rock surround- ing the mineralized zone. It is anticipated that the experience gained at Mutooroo will be of considerable help in the development of other solution mining operations.

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

Zinc concentrates from the newer mines and from proposed developments provide both opportunities and processing challenges to the conventional roast-leach electrowin smelters. These concentrates are often characterised by low iron, elevated silica, possibly high manganese, and levels of elements such as germanium which may cause concern. In addition, environmental constraints on residue disposal are forcing significant changes to some smelter practices. Iron in concentrate, and the resulting environmental impact of residue disposal are now major questions. However, normal concentrate tariff structure provides a disincentive against smelters taking high grade concentrate and oxide fume. Processing technology to cope with these changes is reviewed, as is de-watering and materials handling of ultra-fine concentrate. Within a few years, such fine concentrates will account for up to 1 000 000 t/y of contained zinc. New processing technologies including novel transport methods, siliceous leach circuits, manganese removal cells and front-end smelting will become significant in zinc smelting.

A study of the bacterial oxidation of naturally occurring high-purity sulphide minerals (FeS2, Fel_xS, CuFeS2, Cu2S) has been conducted using a mesophilic strain of T. 6ejtAooLcdcth4. As well as metal analyses and solution pH, partitioning of sulphide sulphur into elemental sulphur and sulphate ion has been monitored. Partially oxidised sulphide substrates have been characterised at regular time intervals by X-ray diffraction methods and extra-cellular organic compounds reporting into leach solution have been identified by'thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that the S¦/SO4 2 partitioning of the sulphide substrates is independent of cell inoculum size and initial pulp density and varies with solution pH, Eh, leaching time and mineralogical properties of the individual sulphide minerals. The signifi- cance of results for applications in selective flotation, coal desulphurisation and agglomera- tion has been outlined.

Like companies in other sectors of industry, mining companies are experiencing significant problems with low labour productivity, high labour turnover, and accidents. Increasingly, companies are recognising that good training is a vital factor in dealing with these problems. One such company is Aberfoyle Tin Limited. Early in 1979 the company engaged P.A. Consulting Services Pty. Ltd. (P.A.) to upgrade and formalize its miner training procedures. P.A. developed a programme using their Process Analysis Method of Training (P.A.M.T.) and trained a company trainer in its use. As a result of its application and the establishment of a formal training school, the rate of production of trained miners has been greatly increased. Despite some problems caused by lack of resources at the mine, the trainees graduating under the new scheme have been shown to be of comparable standard to those produced by the previously used "on the job" training method.

The design of the 12 m diameter SAG mill installed at the Cadia Hill Mine in New South Wales followed after two years of extensive laboratory and pilot plant testwork. The testwork showed the Cadia ores to be hard and competent necessitating the use of both a variable speed SAG mill drive and pebble crushing. The grinding power requirements for the SAG mill was based on engineering in-house grinding software, pilot plant data and simulations using JK SimMet software. Surveys of the SAG mill operation during the first four weeks showed the feed size distribution, transfer size and pebble rate to be lower or less than those for which it was designed. To compensate for the lower pebble rate, the SAG ball load was increased. This resulted in the total comminution circuit power being some 0.5 kWh/t higher than predicted. The JK SimMet SAG model has been modified to take account of these variations.

The past year has been a difficult one for the mining industry in this country, but an active and successful one for the Branch. Membership has continued to increase, albeit at a slower rate than last year, and with the increase almost all from student membership. I dwelt at some length last year on the continued increase in student membership, which I ascribed largely to deliberate policies adopted by the Branch to foster this area of membership. I don't propose to reiterate these, suffice it to say that as usual, the Otago School of Mines has been a prolific source of student members, and it will be a pity if this source dries up û more on this subject later. In fact, students form just on 29 per cent of the Branch's total membership û a far higher percentage than for any other Branch in the Institute, whose membership as a whole comprises only ten per cent students.

"In this paper, the reduction and separation behaviour of iron and slag in carbon composite iron ore pellets has been investigated experimentally using an electric resistance furnace simulating a rotary hearth furnace process. The factors that affect the formation of iron nuggets, such as temperature, holding time, molecular ratio of C/O and basicity, are discussed. Results show that the reduction of iron ore, carburisation of reduced iron and the composition and quantity of slag are very important for producing iron nuggets. Through optimisation of process parameters, iron nuggets can be formed below 1300¦C when holding time is 20 minutes, C/O is 0.7 and basicity less than 0.5. The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The project specification called for the following works to be excavated: Access Shaft:122 m (out of 140 m total depth), 6.0 m diameter (selected by the contractor),Operation Shaft:125 m (out of 150 m total depth), 4.0 m diameter,Water Curtain Gallery:500 m (Later extended by additional 270 m), 4.0 m wide and 3.5 m high,Storage Caverns:910 m, 14.0 m wide, 11.0 m high,Top Heading:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Bench:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Connection Galleries:250 m, 5.5 m wide, 5.5 m high.A total of 156 000 cubm of rock to be excavated.

Professional engineers of today require a wide array of experience and knowledge. It is true that commonly engineering degrees do teach the technical requirements well, but do fall short in the way of teaching other non-technical issues of professionalism to the student. Today calls for an engineer who does not only have a high standard of the technical knowledge required for their degree, but also has a broad range of experience in areas that are becoming increasingly important in engineering. The importance of social responsibility, liability and interpersonal relations is high. Through the face of the changing world, it has become clear that there is a need for a new type of engineer, who has a broad range of expertise, as well as the typical technical abilities required. This paper will outline these non-technical issues and propose ways of combining these ideas into the mainstream engineering degree.

This case study reviews the Charters Towers vein systems for potential open-pittable bulk tonnage resources in' stockworks, horsetails or multiple vein systems. The review summarises district evaluation undertaken over the last 18. months before specific drill evaluations.Historical mining from Charters Towers includes in excess of six million ounces at head grades of one ounce per ton. A review and structural studies show most veins as simple, tight systems without significant horsetails or multiple sheeted systems. In addition the normal gold content of the pyritic selvages ('formation') is low and disseminated gold is virtually absent. Shoots are structurally controlled on vein/vein and vein/contact intersections. Historically high production vein systems are hosted by .,.t o of the younger granodiorite phases.Geometrically most veins dip shallowly (from 45¦ to as low as 200) in a north or easterly quadrant. Flat dips permit open cut exposure of considerable vein area at a favourable stripping ratio.

Diamond drilling since early 2006 has identified an epithermal gold-silver (Au-Ag) deposit beneath 140 m to >400 m of cover. The Fruta del Norte discovery had an inferred resource estimate of 58.9 Mt grading 7.2 g/t Au in October 2007. The mineralisation is hosted by Mid-Late Jurassic andesite and andesite porphyry in a regional fault zone beneath mainly post-mineral but in part syn-mineral Late Jurassic cover. The intermediate sulfidation-style deposit formed before and in part during deposition of epiclastic cover in the fault related pull apart basin. In addition to its size and obvious economic importance, the widespread occurrences of visible gold and exquisitely preserved epithermal textures will make Fruta del Norte an important learning tool for explorationists seeking epithermal mineralisation in theAndes and elsewhere. One of the major changes in the resource industry in the nineties has been the re-internationalisation of the industry. The history of the resource business has been one of companies from the developed world utilising the cash flows from their operations to explore and develop mines in less developed regions of the world. This resource development has progressively generated wealth and economic development, which in turn, has led to a new generation of exploration and mining projects. In South America, Chile had led the way in a mining resurgence, now closely followed by Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Peru. Although Chile has long had a significant copper mining industry, the pre-nationalisation phase was driven by American capital; the current phase has been spearheaded by R.T.Z. - B.H.P. at Escondida with Canadian junior companies, in particular, providing major speculative impetus. The Australian junior companies have not been significant in South America.

Comalco's Bell Bay smelter produces some 94 000 t.p.a. of primary aluminium in the form of foundry alloys, extrusion billet and rolling blocks. The extrusion billet and rolling block are produced by a process, in which molten aluminium is poured into an open ended water cooled mould of the required shape. The bottom of the mould is initially closed off by a dummy or starting block. Primary cooling takes place at the mould wall and secondary cooling is achieved by direct water sprays onto the out side shell of the product. Careful preparation of the molten alumin- ium is essential if stringent alloy specific- ation limits are to be met. Optimum casting temperature must be maintained within a narrow range and metal cleanliness is important to ensure a consistent product. Atmospheric air on a moisture free volume basis consists of approximately 21 per cent oxygen. The current minimum threshold for oxygen in Australia is 19.5 per cent. Atmospheric air generally will also contain water vapour and will also pick up further moisture as it flows around a mine ventilation network. This paper details the results of a study to determine how much oxygen depletion can occur due to the sole impact of increasing the moisture content of air and the potential impacts of this on ventilation system design. The study shows that the moisture content can have a significant impact on the oxygen concentration in mine air. The main factors controlling the impact are the barometric pressure, dry bulb temperature and relative humidity of the air.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2015. The rapid socio-economic growth of Hanoi City coincides with a corresponding growth of the transport demand. Today, the transport in Hanoi is completely dependent on private modes of transport. Because of the lack of an efficient public transport system and the expected rapid increase in traffic volumes, the movement of people and goods in the urban areas of Hanoi will cause congestion in the present city transport network. The solution of the construction of new roads, or the widening of the existing streets, is very expensive in urban areas and usually causes many social problems due to the resettlement of people. From the point of view of the number of inhabitants, Hanoi City is now over one million. Above this number the international experience shows that the public transportation must be a mass transport system with large capacity, commercial speed and also independent as much as possible from the street network. According to the Hanoi Master Plan for 2020, the Hanoi urban population will be over 3.5 million persons. Also, in the next 15 years, the distances between centre-destination points will be doubled by comparison to 1995.

The production of paste backfill has typically been accomplished through the adaptation of existing technology. Thickeners and disc filters have several drawbacks when applied to production of tailings paste backfill. Personnel at CANMETÆs backfill research laboratory in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada have been carrying out research into and development of methods to produce paste backfill using total mill tailings since 1991. Using a silo for production of paste is not a new concept but has been refined to a marketable level. This technology is based on a fluidization principle that assists in settling the tailings to an homogenous state in a silo. Other developments include patented de-watering technology for use in the silo to speed the settling of the solids to a suitable solids content, optimisation of silo geometry, and instrumentation related to paste backfill production and transportation. The advantages to fluidisation technology are in reduced capital cost, reduced operating costs and in the environmental benefits of using full plant tailings over classified tailings or alluvial aggregates. Another major advantage is in the ability of this technology to be retrofitted to existing hydraulic backfill plants to further reduce capital cost. This paper details the development of the new technology as well as the associated cost savings over other technologies. It will also look at the research and development of unique components that make this technology work.

The Research Centres Program initiated by the Federal Government and supported by the mining industry has had a major impact on geoscience research and education during the past five years. Eight major university based-Geoscience Research Centres are currently supported by the Government, including four Key Centres of Teaching and Research and a further four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). The Research Centres Program has led to a concentration of high quality research and teaching in areas of demand and strategic importance creating strong university - industry linkages and a source of well trained and motivated graduates. Over the last decade Australia's reputation as a leader in mineral exploration and ore deposit research has grown substantially, in part because of the development of the Research Centres Program, and to increased collaboration and interaction between research groups and exploration geoscientists across the industry. During a period when ore deposit research activity has been decreasing in other countries (eg USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries), equivalent research activities in Australia have been increasing, within a well co-ordinated national framework. The future challenge for universities and the mining industry will be to maintain the momentum of the successful research centres in order for the centres to become self-funding over a six- to nine-year period.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.
