Time-dependent deformation occurs when geo-materials are under an applied load; this may lead to additional deflection of a tunnel structure and the stress redistribution in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolt support system over time. A better understanding of this creep behaviour can improve the reliability of design, construction and maintenance of tunnels. Hence, the present investigation was carried out on the time-dependent properties of rock, shotcrete and the combined tunnel support system. Tunnels constructed in different ground conditions were modelled. The closure changes of the tunnel with time and the redistribution of stress in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolts due to the creep deformation were analysed. Results of the present analysis were compared with the results from the commercial program ABAQUS.

As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

The Paddington I and proposed Paddington II Pits are both located in what is, by Eastern Goldfields standards, a large tonnage-low grade orebody. The Pits have been designed to supply ore to a substantial Treatment Plant at the designed rate of 875,000 tpa. (This throughput is currently being increased to 1,200,000 tpa).Generally the orebody lends itself to large tonnage mining techniques, relying on only a relatively small amount of sampling. The surface enrichment zone and depleted zone are reasonably complex and require more intensive grade control and sampling techniques as typically utilised in many surface mines in the Eastern Goldfields, although as experience and understanding of the nature of the orebody was gained, less sampling became necessary.

The Effluent Treatment System at Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) was commissioned in December, 1991 and has operated satisfactorily, ensuring that aqueous discharges from PMEZ comply with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Act. The system treats both spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant, and acidic liquor generated in the gas cleaning section of the Sulphuric Acid Plant. The spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant are collected in a large catchment pond. The pond liquor, after partial neutralisation with sodium hydroxide to pH 4, and removal of suspended solids, is preferentially recycled to the Zinc Plant, for example, for washing of residues. Liquor which cannot be recycled, is treated in the Lime Neutralisation Section. The other input to the Lime Neutralisation Section is the acidic liquor from the Sulphuric Acid Plant from which mercury has been removed by contact with aluminium pellets in a fluidised column. In the Lime Neutralisation Section, the liquors are blended and neutralised to pH 10 by the addition of slaked lime. The heavy metals and most of the fluorine are precipitated. The precipitated solids are removed in a thickener with part of the thickener underflow being filtered. Most of the thickener underflow is recycled to generate solids that settle rapidly and filter well. The filter cake is returned to the Zinc Plant for the recovery of contained heavy metals while the thickener overflow is discharged to the Derwent River.

The mining industry has aggressively sought competitiveness through increased productivity and return on investment. A primary strategy has been the pursuit of economies of scale. This has also been dependent upon the implementation of new technology and systems integration. System integration has been accomplished through the implementation of mine dispatch, global positioning and mine wide communication technologies. These technologies have tended to advance at different rates of development and implementation. The result has been that across the industry, and even within companies, mines are at various stages of operational system re-engineering in these areas, driven by improvements in productivity and operational efficiency. Although this strategy has been successful, little effort has been made to analyse change in operational performance in order to understand and model the effects of scale in a quantitative manner. This paper considers the particular impact of equipment scale, together with potential future trends. It then presents and demonstrates a preliminary method to quantify through simulation the anticipated benefits of economies of scale.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. It is a practice, however, which is extending ag the effect of the impurities in zinc on products manufactured therefrom becomes widely recognized.The notes hereunder are intended to briefly survey the principal uses to which high-gr.ade zinc is being put, and, wherever possible, to indicate the effect of the impurities normally present in the lower grades of zinc.In the United States zinc is graded into five divisions, known respectively as "High-grade" "Intermediate" "Brass Special" "Selected," and "Prime Western." The maximum amounts of impurities allowed in the various grades are indicated in Table I,which is compiled from data published by the American Society of Testing Materials:In addition, it is specified in an cases that the slabs shall be reasonably free from surface corrosion or adhering foreign matter. The management of waste from mining operations is a significant aspect of bringing a mineral commodity to final market. The ore beneficiation process and transport/disposal of waste involves significant consumption of costly resources. A number of options exist to dispose of mill waste on surface and as a backfill material. These range in complexity, risk, capital cost, operating cost and ultimately business performance. This paper discusses the value delivered to a business in using dewatering systems including paste as opposed to conventional slurry tailings disposals. This is illustrated through various case studies and serves to demonstrate how paste can add value and reduce risk to a successful business.

Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.

In the traditional analysis of airblast and ground vibration, it is often assumed that only that single blasthole possessing the maximum charge weight (or a small group of blastholes initiating in an 8 ms time window) will determine the peak level of airblast or vibration. This assumption is examined in light of waveform superposition, and is found to be unsound. More rational alternatives are given in which all blastholes (or a selected number of blastholes) are assumed to contribute, in varying degrees, to the peak vibration or airblast. However, it is also shown that there is generally no precise solution for determining the number of blastholes that contribute to the peak level. The technique of waveform superposition does not rely on evaluating which group of holes produced the peak, and so is the preferred method for prediction. Some numerical and analytical models of wave superposition for airblast and vibration are also reviewed and recent approaches discussed. The directionality of airblast, in particular, is analysed in detail using a new superposition model that is constructed of two submodels, onenumerical, the other analytical. This model shows that the airblast from even a single blasthole can be highly directional. The detail of this model is commercially sensitive and will not be discussed. Only results and a broad discussion will be given.

From the viewpoint of mechanical efficiency, charges should be fully coupled and, upon detonation, should just fail to break the rock in compression. But because mining thrives on its cost-effectiveness rather than its mechan- ical efficiency, the explosive which generates maximum energy per $ should generally be used, even though the mechanical efficiency of this explosive's detonation products may be sub- optimum. Wherever possible, each charge should have a length:diameter ratio of about 20 or more and should shoot to a concavely biplanar free face that is both parallel and reasonably close to the blasthole. Success in obtaining parallel effective faces often demands the drilling of angled blastholes and, hence, will require intensified research and development efforts by drilling manufacturers, especially where hard strong rocks are encountered. Blastholes should be drilled on equilateral triangular grids and fired in a Vl or shallower V-type sequence using inter-row delays which ensure that good pro- gressive relief of burden is achieved. The conventional method of calculating Se/Be values (on the basis of planar effective faces) is often invalid.

The earliest suggestions that some metallic ore deposits might have resulted from seafloor volcanic exhalation seem to have been those of Elie de Beaumont in 1847 and Henry de la Beche in 1851. In 1885 Tinoco, and Bouglise and Cumenge, independently investigating-.the manto copper deposits of the Boleo district of Baja California, proposed that these had formed on the seafloor by precipitation from "hydrothermal submarine emanations". Some twenty years later the Japanese geologists Kukuchi and Tsujimoto (1904) put forward the idea that the Kuroko ore- bodies were seafloor volcanic sinter deposits and in 1919 this was re-affirmed by Ohashi. In 1909 the English geologists Thomas and MacAllister postulated a similar origin for some of the gold deposits of Mount Morgan in Queensland. Between the wars the great European economic geologists Niggli and Schneiderhohn both clearly recognized a class of seafloor hydrothermal deposits. The idea rose again immediately after the Second World War in a very clear statement by Hegeman in 1948, which was followed by contributions by Ehrenberg and Kraume and their co-workers on the submarine volcanic origin of the Meggen and Rammelsberg orebodies in 1954 and 1955 respectively. In 1955 the present writer, quite unaware of early or contemporary work on volcanic exhalative ore deposits, proposed a volcanic sedimentary/diagenetic origin for the stratiform base metal ores of SE Australia. In doing so the writer emphasized the probable importance of island arc volcanism, suggested that some "metallogenetic regions" of ancient terrains were in fact old island arc systems, that the composition of the ores might be related to the composition of the associated volcanic rocks and that such ores would be tied to volcanic stratigraphy. Ideas on relations between volcanism and stratiform ore genesis have thus been evolving over.a period of some 140 years and, beginning with the observations on Baja California in 1882, work round the rim of the Pacific has made an important contribution over a period of more than 100 years.

The Porgera Joint Venture and Dyno Nobel have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (SAG) mills by optimising the blast fragmentation. A number of test blasts were conducted during the period May 2000 to January 2002 and the ore from these blasts was campaigned through the mill. The data from these trials suggested up to 15 per cent increase in the SAG mill throughput with high energy blast designs. However, changes in ore geology (shape, structure and hardness) and potential ore dilution/loss and wall damage have raised concerns about the economic benefits of these designs over the entire orebody. The lack of a system to track the economic benefits of these modified designs has also compounded these concerns. PJV and DynoConsult, the consulting arm of Dyno Nobel have initiated steps to minimise the potential for ore dilution and wall damage resulting from these modified designs. DynoConsult worked with Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to develop and implement a blast management system to track the quality of blast implementation and down stream process benefits. This paper discusses the implementation of the system and the results achieved to date.

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). One dyke occurs in Block 12, and the other in Block 13, and both were stated to consist of a dark basic amphibole rock, called diorite for convenience. Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

The geological and economic aspects of the known deposits of uranium in southern Africa are described. Processes influencing uranium mineralisation in the relevant geological environments are elaborated upon in order to define fundamental characteristics of mineralisation in the sub-continent and identify potential areas for the location of new deposits. Several areas, namely the Damara orogenic belt and its extension in Zambia and Zaire, the Bushveld zone, and the terrains of uranium fertilisation from the mantle have a high probability of hosting uranium deposits which are yet to be discovered. Uranium resources of the southern African region have been estimated and production forecasted to the year 2000. This geographic region contains one quarter of WOCA's resources in the Reasonably Assured Resources and Estimated Additional Resources - Category I exploitable at less than 130/kg U. On this resource base, it has the potential to maintain its position as the leading exporter of uranium in the world with a production of 13 350 t U308 by the end of the century. Zambia and Zaire are expected to join South Africa and Namibia as uranium producers in the next decade, with their combined share of projected production being in the order of 10%.

An important aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineral processing attributes, which leads to improved orebody understanding. One of these attributes is flotation performance. Several methods have been developed as indicators for flotation performance, including batch testing leading to kinetic information and the standard grade-recovery curve. This paper makes a preliminary statistical comparison between a newly proposed geometallurgical batch flotation procedure and the æstandardÆ batch flotation test commonly used to measure flotation performance in the laboratory. The new test uses much less material than the standard test, and is much faster. It is concluded that the new method follows the final recovery of the standard method well, suggesting that it will be effective in reflecting ore variability for geometallurgical purposes. Comparison of the methods based on the full grade-recovery curve shows less agreement, but this may be due to the fact that the curve is sensitive to the particular experimental set-up and conditions, which make such comparisons quantitatively challenging. A clay-capping trial was established in 1996 on Magazine Dump at the Mt Lyell Copper Mine. The trial was initially constructed under the Mount Lyell Remediation Research and Demonstration Program, a co-operative venture between the State and Federal governments. The detailed engineering design for the clay cover included the following features; reshaping and compaction of dump batters, 5 m vertical bench interval, overall side-slopes of 2.5:1, emplacement of clay in four 150 mm lifts, compaction by a 10 t vibrating roller or ætrack rollingÆ on batters with density testing for quality control. A small section at the base of the dump ( The trial also generated certain unexpected findings. Field permeability tests on the cover yielded uncertain results and oxygen remains available throughout the dump. The flow data indicate that, while total outflow has decreased as a result of storm shedding, inputs from groundwater and batter infiltration are still significant. Outflow during the driest weeks of the year may have risen following capping. Detailed assessment of the data is hampered by insufficient pre-capping information; however, there is a possibility that conductivity flux emitted when flows in the receiving environment are at their annual minimum is unchanged or worse post-capping.

Recent research has highlighted the potential of a relatively new style of gold mineralisation related to granite intrusion. New discoveries in Alaska, Central Europe and Asia and Eastern Australia with total resources of 1600 t Au offer attractive targets for regional exploration in areas which may have been overlooked in the past. A spatial information system was developed to target granite-gold systems in eastern Australia and the West coast of New Zealand, using well constrained geological and exploration models derived from current research. Target areas were recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that have similar spatial data relationships to known granite gold mineralisation elsewhere in the world. The second phase of the modelling better constrained the regional scale target areas by including more detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical data in the GIS to develop prospect-scale targets and to allow the acquisition of tenements over these areas. A geological review of each target area was carried out in the field to put the GIS models into context. The fieldwork has highlighted the potential for this style of mineralisation in New Zealand and will increase investment in mineral exploration and development in New Zealand in the near future.

We often read and hear, especially in the United States, that we are running out of critical metals. These are vague forebodings of stagna- tion or winding down of our civilization. Our technological progress has been rapid in the last 50 years and is still advancing at an accelerated rate, and predictions of its long-term impact on consumption and production of metals are more hazardous than ever in the light of the great economic and political shifts that are bound to continue. There are many factors that will have a hardly predictable but profound effect on pro- duction and consumption of metals over a time span of, say, 25 years. Among such factors are recycling, substitution, availability of capital, direct involvement of governments in financing and production, and the capability of producing much lower grade ores at possibly much higher prices relative to costs in the event of scarcity. I must state at the outset that my discussion of this topic does not take into account the role that deep-sea nodules containing copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese may play, because I don't believe production from these deposits will be of much significance within the 25 year span I will be discussing.
