Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

Flooding velocities were measured in a laboratory column (96 mm 4) provided with both bottom and side air entry Packings used were 6 mm glass rings and spheres and -16 +8 mm coke. Results showed that when air was introduced through side nozzles flooding velocities were much higher than those obtained when air was introduced at the bottom of the column. Significance of the results and application to blast furnace flooding is discussed from the viewpoint of assymmetric gas flow.

A numerical model of the spontaneous combustion of coal has been developed and is being used to investigate the nature of self-heating in underground coal mines. Results to date confirm the complexity of the self-heating reaction in coal and illustrate the impact of the factors such as the coal reactivity, mass and airflow through the coal pile. Subtle differences in the chemical, physical and environmental conditions and make a significant difference in the development of a high temperature self-heating or a low temperature benign condition, the subtlety escaping normal underground observations. Additional work is planned to investigate the thresholds for such factors in the development of spontaneous combustion and it the implications for detection by gaseous Products.

The bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation column. The effect of variables such as air flowrate, frother dosage and type, pulp density, particle size and water column height on the bubble size was investigated. The results show that an increase in either air flowrate or pulp density cause the bubble size to increase, while increases in water column height, frother dosage, surface tension or solid particle size cause the bubble size to reduce. Among the frother types tested, MIBC was found to be the most effective in reducing the bubble size.

The different electrowinning cells presently developed for recovery of gold from CIP eluates are compared and contrasted. The efficiency of operation for each cell is,discussed in terms of the electrochemistry of (a) gold deposition, and (b) packed bed electrodes. The advantages and problems associated with each cell design are presented and recommendations are made as to the best method of gold recovery.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

A reciprocating plate column is described in which two sets of perforated plates are mounted alternately on two shafts and are reciprocated with a phase difference of 1800 between them. It is shown that such a column is mechanically superior to the previously proposed types: under practical operating conditions the pressure fluctuations at the base of the column are only a small fraction of the static head. Furthermore, mass transfer experiments with the system tributyl phosphate in kerosene- acid aqueous solutions of uranyl nitrate show that both high specific throughputs and reason- ably good efficiencies can be attained in this type of column. A comparison with the more conventional extraction equipment (mixer -settlers, pulsed columns) on the basis of residence time per equilibrium stage indicates the potential of reciprocating plate columns in hydrometallurg- ical application, especially in which the requirements of separation efficiency are modest while the scale of operation is large.

Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

The first is in the planning of preparation plants and the first part of this paper discusses Simprep, a computer package that was designed to help on these calculations. The other is the development of control schemes to improve quality control, and the second part of the paper deals with the development of simulation techniques for this purpose.

Although there are sound principles used in the world recognised methods of gas emission prediction, results based on these methods applied to several Australian longwall extractions have yielded unacceptably high discrepancies. With the development of mining in new seams and at higher rates of extraction, the need has grown for a methodical approach to predicting gas emission levels specifically for local Australian mining conditions. Such an approach is developed from results of recorded emission readings during longwall mining at Appin and Pacific Collieries over the past 6 years.

The number and severity of sulphide dust explosions in underground metalliferous mines have increased in recent years, despite various methods used to prevent or inhibit them. A dust explosion occurs when a cloud of combust- ible dust in an oxidizing atmosphere is exposed to an ignition source with sufficient energy to ignite the dust. A computer blast simulator model was used to investigate the movement of the fractured rock, temperatures and volumes of the explosion gases in a 70 m high, 24 m wide open stope.

Oxygen and carbon isotope mapping of hydrothermally altered wall rocks was applied to the blind ore prospecting of skam Pb-Zn deposits in the Kamioka mining district, central Japan, where the wall rocks consist of heterogeneous rock units. The results (8180sMow of -1.1 to +17.3%o and 613CPDB of -5.0 to +4.8%o for limestones, and 8180SMOW of -0.8 to +12.5%c for silicate rocks) show isotope zonations of the wall rocks with depletions in heavy isotopes (180 and 13C) toward the center of mineralization. The isotope zonations likely formed by interaction of migrating thermal waters with the wall rocks during the mineralization. The heavy-isotope depleted zone, which indicates higher temperature or higher water-to- rock ratio of the system, occurs in the footwall of a fault, indicating that the fault played the role of main conduit of the ore-forming fluids. A heavy-isotope depleted zone was also found in an area, where significant mineralization had yet to be identified. Recent drilling in this area has intercepted a zone with a grade of 16.0% Zn, 0.8% Pb, and 35g Ag per metric tonne at a depth of about 360m.

This paper describes four new families of collector products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. It is becoming more apparent with further testing that these four new product families can offer both technical and economic advantages to the industrial flotation process operator.

Tholeiitic metabasalts comprise at least five geochemically distinct mafic volcanic associations of Late Palaeozoic age within the Gympie Province, southeast Queensland. Geochemical features indicate that parental magmas of the various metavolcanic suites were generated in contrasting tectonic regimes, although each of the suites shows some affinities with eruptives from convergent plate margin settings.Basalts from the Highbury Volcanics of the Gympie Group are island arc tholeiites (IAT) formed during an immature stage of eruptive activity in an intra-oceanic arc. They are unique among the analysed metabasites in possessing high Zr/Nb (Zr/Nb - 30) and very high Ba/Nb, and as well as low Ti/V, Ti/Zr and Ti/Y. These features are explicable solely in terms of contributions from a depleted, convecting upper mantle source, and large ion lithophile element (LILE) enriched fluids ascending from subducted oceanic crust.

Blasting performance is directly related to the characteristics and efficiency of the explosives used. The selection of the correct explosive for particular blast conditions and objectives depends on the ability to characterise the performance of individual explosive products. Techniques have been developed by the JKMRC to measure explosive performance and assess the impact of explosive performance on blast results. Studies conducted at a number of mine sites have shown that different types of explosives perform quite differently and that the performance of any particular explosive can vary significantly. The principal causes of these variations have been identified and detailed blast monitoring techniques, including the analysis of muckpile fragmentation and shape, have been used to quantify the effects of explosive performance on blast Results.

During the last century Allis-Chalmers has supplied many screens of various types to industry, from revolving screens to the large capacity highly efficient screen available today. The features incorporated over these years in horizontal and inclined screens are varied and numerous and include many innovations such as tri-and bi-sloped screen decks. Today the emphasis is on wide vibrating screens with good "G" value, with large "throw", to achieve high capacity. Larger screens lead the way to treating a somewhat neglected area of mining operations - that of concentrator mine flotation tailings to allow effective transportation and stacking by conveyor belt. The benefits from a cost, water saving and environment view point are discussed in this paper.

The production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite using hydrochloric acid leaching is investigated. Previously published data is used to comment on the optimum process conditions. It is shown that the most important aspect to consider is the maximisation of impurity dissolution and the minimisation of titanium losses.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. Mt Keith concentrator treats low grade disseminated nickel sulfide ore supplied from the adjoining open pit mine. It is a traditional crushing, two-staged closed circuit grinding circuit (SAG & Ball Mills), followed by a complex split-size rougher, scavenger and cleaner flotation circuit. In 2016, 10.5 Mt was milled, at an average head grade of 0.54% Ni, yielding 35 000 nickel metal tonnes in concentrate.Historical analysis of the plant data indicated that of all the nickel lost in the fines rougher circuit tails stream, 25.6% was recoverable in an eight minute laboratory scale flotation test. These results implied that this fine nickel was readily available for recovery in the plant, either through operational improvements or additional flotation capacity. With operation optimisation ongoing, and capital within the business focused elsewhere, plant personnel were challenged to think differently about improving recovery.In 2012, a separate project to improve plant recovery when treating high talc ore was completed. Amongst other vessels, this project saw the installation of two 150 m3 Outotec Cells to the scavenger section of the fines rougher, middlings and scavengers (RMS 1) circuit. Since installation, the operation of these cells resulted in difficulties immediately upstream with instability in the scavenger cells. It was therefore decided that these cells would be better suited to treating the fines rougher circuit tails.The alterations required to divert these flows were minimal, with the capital project totalling $220 000.In the two years since installation, the fines rougher tailings nickel grade has dropped by 9.9%. The scavenger circuit has also seen a 2.8% reduction in tailings nickel grade, and instability issues were immediately resolved. This project serves as a lesson in how existing plant infrastructure may be better utilised to maximise recovery. Although this is especially applicable when capital constrained, such re-appropriation can be considered at any point to maximise return on existing assets. CITATION:Hussey, L, 2017.
