Inadequate goaf gas control may lead to gas exceedances in the ventilation return air, which will trip power in longwalls and cause production stoppage. To effectively control gas emissions, Australian mines heavily rely on drilling vertical goaf holes to capture coalmine methane before it migrates to mine openings. The wide application of goaf gas drainage may change the goaf pressure distribution, lead to more ventilation air leakage, and consequently increase gas explosion and spontaneous combustion risks. This paper focuses on analysing goaf gas drainage production data from a case study longwall mine in Australia. The correlation between suction pressure, total flow rate, gas flow rate and air leakage rate were analysed in detail as the face-to-hole distance changes. Suction pressure is found to be positively correlated with total flow rate, and their correlation also varies at different goaf locations due to various goaf compaction and flow resistance. This paper also proposed a theoretical method to calculate the goaf resistance of ventilation air leakage pathways. Based on several basic assumptions and different goaf drainage scenarios, the leakage airflow pathway resistance in the goaf at different face-to-hole distances can be calculated. The model results suggested that the resistance of air leakage pathways from the working face to individual goaf holes increased with the face-to-hole distance. The resistance results can also be used to calculate the corresponding permeability at the same position, which can be used as input data for CFD or Ventsim models.

This paper discusses the implementation and potential limitations of the method for estimating sampling and analytical errors of multiple source mine output blended into a shipping product, described by Everett and Ziegelaar (2010). The practice of quality measurement varies between iron ore miners. The common objective is to monitor effective resource utilisation and control of product quality to customers. A flow diagram is given presenting the various options used by iron ore mine operators and the merits of the different options are discussed.

Many organisations struggle to yield meaningful outcomes from incident investigations. This paper will demonstrate that we can discover systemic issues by rethinking the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of investigations, fostering genuine risk reduction. Key points: 1. Shift from ‘prevent recurrence’ to ‘learn and reduce risk’: conventional investigations focus narrowly on recurrence prevention, resulting in narrowly focused investigations with limited ability to identify and reduce organisational risk. Redirecting our objective to learning and improvement opens avenues for broader risk mitigation. 2. Understanding daily work for risk insights: recognise that work is not always completed in full compliance with procedures. Workers will adapt how they complete tasks influenced by the conditions and management systems that exist every day. Understanding the conditions and systems affecting everyday work is vital for uncovering systemic risks. 3. Unearth systemic issues through in-depth exploration: many investigations address surface concerns such as lack of training, incorrect procedures, equipment not being maintained, and missing overarching organisational risks. Systemic, organisation-wide risks are not identified. To discover these systemic issues and create shared learnings, investigators must question management systems, including resourcing, planning and risk management. 4. Design actions for safe failure: common actions like discipline and training fall short and do not reduce risk. Resilience emerges from well-designed controls. Incorporate planning, better resources, interlocks, and guarding to bridge the gap between task execution and risk. 5. Investigation Reports as a Business Case: Investigation reports should not simply state historical information regarding an incident. They are to facilitate decision-making and be presented as a business case to drive change. Organisations can move beyond localised risk and ineffective administrative actions by changing investigation objectives and methods. They can facilitate learning, understand daily work intricacies, identify systemic issues, and enhance the capacity for safety, driving lasting risk reduction.

The authors were engaged to optimise a traditional rebar cage reinforced concrete segmental lining by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using macro synthetic fibres for the Shanghai metro extension. The aim of this study was to reduce or entirely replace the original steel reinforcement of the segmental lining, in order to make the precast production process faster and more economic. The outer diameter of the tunnel was 6200 mm, the thickness of the segments was 350 mm.The numerical calculations were performed by Atena Finite Element software, which is based on the combination of Menétrey-William and Rankine failure surfaces on the compression and tension sides respectively. The effect of the macro synthetic fibres was modelled as tension stiffening on the tension surface.A one-to-one full scale model of an assembled tunnel ring using the original reinforcement cages was tested at Tongji University in Shanghai, July 2013. The ring was tested to differing load levels where load and displacement were measured until failure. The author’s first step was to calculate the real displacement characteristics of the original reinforced concrete (RC) ring, then calculate the numerically modelled version, so as to compare them. The material parameters of the concrete and rebar used had been determined through basic material tests conducted at the Tongji University. (Bi, Liu and Wang, in press).The numerical modelling undertaken has shown good correlation with the full-scale physical test results. Optimisation of the lining reinforcement was achieved through the addition of fibres, resulting in a substantial reduction of the steel rebar cages. "Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software. "There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. Strain-based failure criteria have several advantages over stress-based failure criteria: they can account for elastic and inelastic strains; they utilise direct, observable effects instead of inferred effects (strain gauges versus stress estimates) and they model complete stress-strain curves, including prepeak, non-linear elasticity and post-peak strain weakening. In this study, a strain-based failure criterion derived from thermodynamic first principles utilising the concepts of continuum damage mechanics is presented. Furthermore, implementation of this failure criterion into a finite element simulation is demonstrated and applied to the stability of underground mining coal pillars.In numerical studies, pillar strength is usually expressed in terms of critical stresses or stress-based failure criteria where scaling with pillar width and height is common. Previous publications have employed the finite element method for pillar stability analysis using stress-based failure criterion, such as Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown, or stress-based scalar damage models.A novel constitutive material model, which takes into consideration anisotropy as well as elastic strain and damage as state variables, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The damage threshold and its evolution are strain-controlled, and coupling of the state variables is achieved through the damage-induced degradation of the elasticity tensor. This material model is implemented into the finite element software Abaqus and can be applied to 3D problems.Initial results show that this new material model is capable of describing the non-linear behaviour of geomaterials commonly observed before peak strength is reached as well as post-peak strain softening. Escalating electricity costs are one of the biggest operational cost drivers in mining. The trend to use high-powered auxiliary fans delivering increased airflow to meet the dilution requirements of diesel equipment, together with the reliance on ducted systems rather than traditional flow-through systems to ventilate areas, increases the overall energy requirements of ventilation systems. To manage and reduce electricity costs energy management systems can be implemented, inefficient operating units can be replaced and the operation of energy-consuming components of ventilation systems can be optimised.This paper describes the process followed to design and develop an energy-efficient axial flow auxiliary fan. The fan-targeted design was based on static pressure and volume flow rate requirements incorporating higher overall fan efficiencies. A brief overview of the results is given, including the aerodynamic design procedure using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The mechanical design criteria used, including stress analysis on the rotor and designs to improve the vibration levels of the fan, are also presented. Through this study it was demonstrated that the aerodynamically designed rotors using profiled and twisted blades improve the total fan efficiency considerably when compared with some of the older-generation fans using cambered plates. The latter were typical in the mining sector in South Africa at the time of the study where average overall fan efficiencies of standard cambered fans less than 63 per cent and some of the older-generation cast aluminium blades have peak overall fan efficiencies of about 65 per cent. Peak overall fan efficiency of more than 80 per cent was achieved by using the described design and development process. Additional benefits are that the fans are quieter due to the better aerodynamic design and have a longer operating life due to reduced vibration levels.In conclusion, the use of CFD to develop fans to deliver the required volume flow at the required pressure allows quicker design turnaround time. It furthermore allows the ventilation engineer the option to specify a specific fan and is not limited to an off-the-shelf catalogue fan. It thus allows engineers to purchase a fit-for-purpose energy-efficient fan. "This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. The Merlin Zone, a 2008 high-grade Mo-Re discovery, is a part of the Mount Dore Deposit in the Eastern Succession of the Mount Isa Inlier in Queensland, Australia. Hosted by carbonaceous metapelites and phyllites, the Merlin mineralisation comprises molybdenite veins, breccia infillings, stylolitic fracture fillings, and disseminations. Because rhenium is geochemically similar to molybdenum and commonly associated with it, global production of rhenium has been mostly a by-product of molybdenum refining. The high-grade rhenium in the Merlin Zone is an exciting discovery that is expected to become a direct source of rhenium. At the time of discovery, quality assurance (QA) procedures for rhenium were not in place at the Merlin Zone; therefore, they needed to be developed.The Merlin Zone was discovered using reverse circulation drilling, which led to concerns about molybdenite loss due to poor sample recovery. The twinning of the discovery hole with diamond core demonstrated a two-fold increase in molybdenum grade over several tens of metres. Consequently, the resources of the Merlin Zone were defined using assays from diamond drill core.Early analytical work, which was initially done only for molybdenum, comprised geochemical analysis with an aqua regia digestion, which have poor precision and can be biased low. Although initial testing for rhenium used similar procedures to those for molybdenum, a scarcity of commercial rhenium reference materials led to a validation process using neutron activation analyses and different digestions. This resulted in introduction of four-acid digestion assays, development of matrix-matched reference materials, and improvements to the quality of molybdenum and rhenium assays for reporting resources. Coarse and pulp duplicates were used to check for sampling bias and to ensure that levels of precision were adequate for the style of mineralisation and analytical methods. In addition, the direct and consistent geochemical correlation between molybdenum and rhenium provided another method for checking analyses.

Legacy tailings storage facilities exist within operating mine sites across Australia. These tailings storage facilities are often viewed as rehabilitation liabilities but with considered assessment may prove to be a resource. Extraction of such a resource might add value to operations by providing cash flow during the development of new mines; providing supplementary mill feed for existing mines undergoing step changes in operations; and supporting mine closure activities. Hellyer Gold Mines is successfully extracting and reprocessing sub-aqueous material from legacy tailings storage facilities at their Hellyer operation in north-west Tasmania. The Hellyer tailings storage facilities contain poly-metallic material from the Hellyer and Fossey underground deposits dating back to the 1980s as well as material from tailings reprocessing activities by other operators of the Hellyer site. Hellyer Gold Mines is reclaiming sub-aqueous material using cutter-suction dredgers and reprocessing on-site. Hellyer is the only operation of its type in Australia and few such operations exist worldwide. Key learnings around the estimation of a resource for legacy tailings storage facilities have been acquired at Hellyer that can be applied to the assessment of other tailings storage facilities. The application of dredging as a mining method at Hellyer is delivered through collaboration with experts from outside the mining industry under the direction of a mining engineer. Key elements required for the planning and delivery of safe and efficient dredging inside tailings storage facilities have been identified at Hellyer and are presented to provide a road map to the development of other dredging operations.

The mining industry faces significant environmental challenges in managing tailing ponds and wastewater treatment, including the risk of contaminated water, breaches of tailing dams, and energy-intensive treatment processes. Traditional methods involve pumping water to secondary treatment facilities for neutralisation, which is costly and poses operational and environmental risks. In response to these challenges, the Professional Mine Water Action Plan (PMAP) introduces a revolutionary approach that combines cutting-edge AI technology and environmentally friendly reagents for in situ neutralisation of acidic wastewater. PMAP leverages magnesium-based slowrelease reagents and AI-driven intelligent dispensing systems to optimise treatment processes within the tailing pond itself. The unmanned smart dispensing vessel (USDV) conducts bathymetry to gather data on water quality and hydrography, allowing the system to determine the appropriate reagent quantity and injection strategy. This approach transforms the tailing pond into virtual reaction columns, enabling individual and simultaneous water treatment while optimising efficiency. PMAP’s novel reagent demonstrates exceptional efficacy in removing critical metals like cobalt, nickel, and copper, as well as reducing harmful metals such as mercury and manganese to undetectable concentrations. Unlike traditional lime-based treatments, PMAP’s reagent prevents gypsum formation and reduces waste volume significantly, improving reagent utilisation and solid waste handling. Furthermore, PMAP technology offers benefits beyond environmental stewardship. By reducing water treatment costs and improving resource management, it enhances operational efficiency and aligns with broader corporate sustainability goals. Additionally, PMAP expedites permitting processes by eliminating the need for traditional water treatment infrastructure and mitigating risks associated with hazardous reagent transportation. Integrating PMAP as a pre-treatment for existing lime facilities provides further benefits, including optimisation of treatment operations, reduced reagent consumption, and the recovery of valuable metals from generated sludges. The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

Geoffrey Blainey's historical account of the mining activity on the west coast of Tasmania, æThe Peaks of LyellÆ documents the changes over 130 years of activity in the region. Commissioned by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, emphasis is placed upon the development of the Mount Lyell Mine in Queenstown. Chapter 19 æWidening HorizonsÆ details the review the Mount Lyell Company undertook in 1904/05 to ensure the future of the operation, following the pessimistic outlook regarding diminishing reserves and poor grade ore. The analogies documented between the Mount Lyell Company at that time, and Gold Mines of Australia 90 years on are remarkable, with both companies demonstrating a commitment to the Mount Lyell area through active exploration, the proactive search for alternative technology and the recognition of the valuable human resource. As Blainey writes (Blainey, 1993), æwith its expanding chemical works, its huge Tasmanian mines, its railways and smelter, its coke works and its mine crusade, Mount Lyell was probably one of the nation's five great industrial companies in 1906 or 1907. This brief phase of industrial and mining expansion had its seed in the threat of extinction . . .Æ After a number of reprieves, the Mount Lyell mine did stop production in 1994, but that only provided an impetus for a review and rebirth.

Although technology and circumstances are in a constant state of change, the principles of managing the human element remain constant. The isolated mining community continues to form the backbone of the minerals industry but the nature of the isolation, along with the economic and political environment of the industry, is changing. These changes require new inputs by management to the workforce. Management must determine an effective working relationship with unions on its mine site and concurrently contribute to the build- up of the expertise of the individual worker through training and communication. It must also retain a proper balance, by way of human contribution, in cost and information reporting and in other areas amenable to computerisation. These comprise the aids to management necessary to achieve the desired operating efficiency and profitability.

Sydney has hundreds of kilometres of sewer tunnels. Many of these are over 50 years old and some have been in service for more than 100 years. The tunnels are predominantly constructed in Hawkesbury Sandstone and many are unlined.Principles have been developed over many years for the safety factor required in designing and constructing new tunnels but these do not necessarily relate to the operation and maintenance of existing tunnels, and in particular those that do not necessarily require personnel access for anything other than regular inspections.Assessment of the stability of these established tunnels needs to take account of their size, their age, their function, and their method of construction, as well as the geology in which they are situated and any support measures which have been installed. More importantly a stability review needs to take account of the consequences of a collapse, with regard to the inspection process, carrying out of any required repairs and the long-term performance of the tunnel.This paper is based upon the authors’ experiences inspecting and reviewing more than 200 km of tunnel in the last ten years. Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

An intensely sheared and mineralisedIzone occurs in the Quartz Dolerite Greenstone (or Younger Greenstone) mass on, the western limb of the Kalgoorlie Syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 ounces of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. Feasibility studies form a vital and significant component of the project delivery cycle. They are at the heart of the valuation process. This paper focuses on variables which can affect a project and how these are assessed as part of the decision-making process through feasibility studies. Test work and site selection needs; the degree of engineering required to meet the study requirements and the quality of owner project information are discussed. Also, local factors including permitting needs, social, environmental and government relations are considered. Engineering and site factors are crucial in the estimating process. The interaction of detailed engineering, engineering assumptions and estimating methodologies are therefore examined. The ownerÆs perspective is considered along with risk analysis, which is fundamental in project feasibility study activities. The impact of this is also discussed.
