The use of rock bolts as permanent support has been prohibited by client specifications in several recent large tunnel projects in Australia. The justification for this appears to lie in concerns with proper and verifiable installation procedures rather than concerns with the intrinsic durability of the corrosion protection systems. However, in civil tunnels, preventing the use of permanent rock bolts for long-term support results in the use of cast in place concrete lining which in some instances would otherwise be unnecessary.

Two quantitative methods for Mineral Resource classification have been applied to a copper skarn deposit beneath a large open pit that is mining a world-class porphyry complex. A drill hole spacing study (DHSS) using the single block kriging method (SBK) and a conditional simulation method (CS) were applied to the skarn deposit and the results compared. Inputs to both processes included the proposed mining rate and stope designs to estimate the likelihood of achieving grade and metal production targets. Mineral Resource classification of the deposit considers the relative precision of tons, grade and metal predictions over quarterly and annual production periods. These relative precision estimates are calculated at 90 per cent confidence interval (CI). The SBK method represented the production period as a single large block. Kriging estimates were performed in the large block for various synthetic drill hole grids, and the estimation errors derived. The error was assumed to be normally distributed due to the large block size and quantity of samples, allowing CIs to be deduced. The CS method followed a conventional sequential Gaussian simulation workflow where grades were simulated with a 5 ft × 5 ft × 5 ft grid node spacing inside mineralisation domains. Each realisation was then averaged up to monthly production volumes represented by a combination of designed stopes, and the coefficient of variation (CV) for the averaged grade was calculated. CI on the relative precision of grade predictions were then deduced from the CVs. The two methods produced similar results; despite being calculated independently. CS results were used to report uncertainty in the proposed life-of-mine plan and highlight areas for additional drilling. SBK results were used as the basis for Mineral Resource classification as this method has been previously applied to the skarn deposit.

The difficulty in fine particle flotation has been attributed, among other things, to a low bubble-particle collision efficiency. Many technologies have been developed which aim at increasing bubble-particle collision efficiency, either by generating micro bubbles or by enlarging particle sizes. However, commercial applications of these technologies are limited. Over the last five years COREM has been actively testing fine particle froth flotation technologies with the objective of commercialisation. Several fine particle flotation technologies, such as dissolved air flotation, electro-flotation, floc flotation, selective flocculation-flotation and carrier flotation, were tested on both single minerals and ore samples in order to identify the reasons that prevented these technologies from being used on a commercial scale. It was found that the two most noticeable factors that prevented the successful application of these technologies were: Mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals. This was a general problem in fine particle flotation, but was aggravated by these technologies that either generated micro bubbles or enlarged the sizes of hydrophobic particles. Oxidation of (sulfide) minerals that resulted in hydrophilic oxidation product coatings. The oxidised fine particles could not be recovered by these fine particle flotation technologies effectively. Solutions to the two problems, ie gangue entrainment and fine particle oxidation, were proposed and tested. It seems that polymeric depressants with both depression and flocculation functions could significantly reduce gangue entrainment, and hydrophilic surfaces of oxidised fine particles could be modified by high intensity conditioning or controlled sulfidisation, thus increasing the recoveries of fine valuable minerals. The improved fine valuable particle flotation and reduced fine gangue entrainment along with fine particle flotation technologies resulted in much improved flotation separation of fine particles.

During its 28-year life the MHD ISP smelter has gone through two phases, each of about a dozen years. The first phase was a learning one; in the second phase the lessons were applied and throughput and production rose strongly. Early experience revealed the robustness and the flexibility of the Imperial Smelting Process. The experience was demonstrated by strong increases in the throughput of mixed lead-zinc concentrates and of secondary (oxide) zinc materials. Purchased material quantities rose from 175 000 tonnes/year to 200 000. The required capacity increase of the IS furnace to smelt the higher throughput was achieved by relatively minor modifications; for instance a change to the internal furnace profile gained an extra two square metres in cross sectional area. The furnace hearth area has remained practically unchanged over its entire history. The paper concludes that there is still more potential to be drawn from the process and MHD intends to sustain raw material input at a new level of 240 000 tonnes/year. However, this rate will have to be achieved under the imposition of more stringent environmental and product quality standards than ever before.

"This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. It also discusses the challenges faced by technical specialists in communicating the results of technical and valuation studies to the investment community.As investors seek to take advantage of the current stage in the investment cycle, the key challenge of the technical specialist is to effectively communicate the uncertainty in technical assumptions, risks and opportunities that drive project value.CITATION:Fairfield, P J, 2016. With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

Predicting the physical characteristics of various ore types has for long been a difficult problem during mining. Grade control practices tend to concentrate on the chemical grade of the ore. Estimation of physical characteristics such as beneficiation behaviour is commonly limited to the simplistic application of historical averages. Large amounts of geochemical data are often gathered during the exploration and mining stages of a project, especially in ferrous and base metal deposits. In addition to the elements of principal economic interest, samples are often analysed for suites of gangue constituents to determine whether the mineralisation lies within target specifications. This multi-element data is often put to no other use than this simple chemical classification, yet it may present the geologist or metallurgist with valuable insights into the mineral content and physical characteristics of the deposit. Normative mineral estimates have been used as a method for characterising igneous rocks for almost 100 years. The method establishes and applies a set of sequential rules, by which the chemical components of a sample are assigned to mineral components. Provided that it is possible to make some realistic assumptions about the mineral species likely to be present in a rock unit or deposit and their paragenesis, this approach can be extended to a variety of mineral deposits. The geochemical data that are routinely collected when, for example, drilling iron ore and base metal deposits, can be used to derive estimates of normative mineral content. These estimates can be used to characterise physical or metallurgical aspects of the ore, such as density, beneficiation behaviour and metal recovery. This paper examines the application of normative mineral estimates to a variety of practical resource characterisation problems. The potential for predicting the lump and fines proportions of iron and manganese ores is also discussed.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited operates 33 draglines of varying sizes in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. The group's operations with draglines commenced in 1963 with the establishment of opencut operations at the then TPM Moura Mine and continued through expansion of that mine, the commissioning of the Utah Development Company Blackwater Mine in 1968, and the subsequent establishment of six (6) other large opencut mines, all in the general area over the next fourteen years. These operations generally commenced with boxcuts on the sub-crop at depths of 15 to 25 metres. Over the years, depths have increased so that average depths now are in the 45 to 50m range. It was soon realised that dragline operations would have to be supplemented with additional stripping equipment. In 1981, a symposium "45m and Beyond" was held in Rockhampton to assess the problems associated with such "deep" stripping. Subsequently, dragline operations have continued and although addi- tional stripping capacity has been added, in many instances, draglines have been used and are being used to dig depths greater than 45m, some- times as much as 65 to 70m.

"Best practice for acid rock drainage (ARD) risk assessment still relies solely on the geochemical properties of sulfidic rocks and mineral processing products, despite the fact that a rockÆs tendency to produce acid also depends on mineralogy and texture. Consequently, there are a plethora of geochemical tests routinely utilised by the mining industry to predict ARD formation. Due to limitations associated with these tests and their relatively high costs, analysis of recommended best practice sample numbers is rarely achieved, reducing the accuracy of waste management plans. Our research addressed this through examining the application of geometallurgical data for predicting acid formation, and led to the identification of potential environmental geometallurgy indicators.Samples obtained from an iron-oxide copper gold deposit were subjected to the geochemistry-mineralogy-texture (GMT) approach, an improved methodology for classifying acid forming potential. GMT results were compared against geometallurgical and assay data sets to evaluate: relative carbonate content measurements (measured by HyLogger) and identify how these could be used to calculate effective acid neutralising capacity mineral hardness (measured by EQUOtip) to determine application of this data for calculating lag-time to acid formation opportunities to automate the acid rock drainage index (ARDI) using classified images produced by a GEOTEK logger and automated microscopy.Links between the GMT approach and geometallurgical data sets were identified. Classified mineralogy data has application at stage one, HyLogger and EQUOtip at stage two and computer-based ARDI evaluations of classified images at stage three. Through such integration, ARD characterisation costs can be reduced, with value added to geometallurgical data sets. Furthermore, deposit-wide ARD domaining is possible, and acquisition of total-orebody knowledge more likely. Recycled cement paste (RCP) is a kind of CaO-rich recourse, which is separated and recycled from waste concrete. Due to its chemical composition, RCP could partially replace lime as a flux and be loaded into electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Rapid RCP assimilation and liquid slag formation have significant effects on EAF steelmaking process. In this study, the dissolution behaviours of RCP and lime at temperatures of 1400°C to 1500°C were investigated using static dissolution experiment. The dissolution rate, interfacial microstructure, as well as dissolution mechanisms were discussed. It was found that the dissolution rate of RCP was much higher than that of lime. RCP could be completely dissolved into slag in 60 secs at 1500°C. The dissolution rate of lime was in range of 3.910-4 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 2.610-3 g/(cm2ꞏs), while that for RCP was in range of 1.510-3 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 4.910-3 g/(cm2ꞏs). As for lime dissolution, a dense layer of dicalcium silicate (C2S) generated at the dissolution interface, and the diffusion of Ca2+ in C2S layer was the limited step for lime dissolution. Some of calcium ferrite could be observed at the interface between lime and C2S layer. As for the RCP dissolution, there is no obvious product layer of C2S formed at the dissolution interface, Fe2+ continuously diffused into RCP layer during the dissolution, and small amount of FeOꞏMgO solid solution generated and gathered at the dissolution interface. The dissolution rate of RCP in EAF slag was quite higher than that of lime, partially add RCP as flux in EAF could accelerate the slag formation process.

Geomembrane (GMB) liners are being used more frequently for the storage or capping of mine waste due to stricter regulatory requirements relating to environmental protection. The longevity of any liner system will be a function of environmental conditions, design (including materials selection), construction and condition monitoring during operations or closure. Based on experience and case studies, this paper presents a review, from design to handover, of some of the smaller and often overlooked details that can have significant impacts on the performance of the GMB and the project overall.The topics covered will include approaches to selecting and testing GMBs to ensure they are suitable. Design considerations to aid installation and quality assurance during construction. Understanding action leakage rates and the consequences of leakage when it creates whales. "The Stockman base metals project is situated in State Forest in the alpine area of East Gippsland, Victoria, adjacent to a National Park and within the headwaters of a major Ramsar-listed wetland catchment and the Murray-Darling River system. Site topography is steep, and elevated (650 m – 1200 m above sea level), and subject to circa 1 m annual rainfall, with occasional winter snowfall. The project consists of two volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits to be mined by underground methods and treated in a 1.0 Mt/a central concentrator to produce copper and zinc concentrates for export over a ten year operational life. New resource projects are rare in Victoria. Recognising the sensitive setting, planning for the Stockman Project, which is now in the advanced permitting stage, has focused on balancing economic, environmental and social outcomes to ensure social licence to operate is secured and can be maintained. This has involved close attention to triple bottom line (TBL) risks and outcomes. Stockman has successfully gained State and Federal approvals via the Environmental Effects Statement process. The process of obtaining these approvals has required close attention to effective stakeholder involvement, and management of a lengthy and difficult approvals process, which is still to be finally concluded. This paper is a case study of the process of that permitting and the issues encountered to date. Key learnings from the experience have included: successful approvals require close attention to much more than just the project and its technical aspects and physical setting – effective stakeholder involvement and endorsement is critical the differing consultation requirements for local, regional and government stakeholders, to design and plan implementation of a project to meet TBL objectives, and to gain social licence to operate within the Victorian approvals process, the need for an effective lead government agency with policy authority dealing with material policy change requiring post-closure financial sureties estimating realistic permitting time and cost during the project evaluation phase. Work health and safety duties around Australia include duties to manage psychosocial health and safety (mental health) of workers engaged by businesses or undertakings and of other persons impacted by the operations of the business or undertaking. Persons conducting a businesses or undertakings must develop systems of work and policies and procedures for ensuring, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety and health of workers and other persons. Officers have a duty to exercise due diligence and to ensure effective systems are developed, implemented and resourced. The developed systems will only be effective with worker’s co-operation and engagement. The duties placed on workers by work health and safety laws are an important part of the safety matrix of obligations. Supervisors and Leaders are workers and they play a critical role in delivering health and safety outcomes. To deliver these health and safety outcomes with respect to psychosocial safety Supervisors and Leaders need to understand their obligations and have a framework to use to assist them in understanding what workers require and what steps need to be taken to meet their duties. They also need to take steps to assist those workers that they supervise to meet their duties.

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) has been evaluated as a technique for monitoring the quality of an industrial zinc sulphate electrolyte. The basis of the method involves measuring a change in the polarisation of the zinc nucleation reaction at an aluminium surface and relating this to the impurity content and/or the overall quality of the electrolyte. Specifically, the technique aims to be able to indicate and quantify detrimental synergism between impurity elements, something which traditional analytical techniques are incapable of providing. The technique has found some success with regard to monitoring glue additions in a range of metal electrolytes. It has been found that investigations by a number of workers over the past 15 years have produced variable and often misleading results due to the inadvertent use of commercial purity aluminium working electrodes. It has been shown that impurity elements in the working electrode can give rise to a range of responses that are not obtained when pure aluminium is used and that the response is variable due to the lack of surface homogeneity of commercial purity aluminium electrodes. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that previous detection limits reported in the literature were based on the presence of additional peaks in the cathodic scan and not polarisation effects. The results of this study have shown that when a pure aluminium working electrode was used, the method was incapable of detecting any change in polarisation for an electrolyte containing three common impurities (Co, Ni and Ge), at concentrations that would significantly reduce optimum electrolytic performance. A range of methods was tried to sensitise the technique, including raising the temperature and acidity, and adding antimony in order to induce some synergism. In all cases the polarisation response was unchanged. Consequently, apart from the commercialised application for monitoring additions of antimony and levelling agents such as glue, CV has very limited application as an electrolyte screening technique.

During the late-1980s crawler-mounted crusher units established their position in the aggregates industry. Between 1986 and 1994 about 700 units were delivered to customers all over the world for surface operations, mainly in Scandinavia and central Europe. The crawler-mounted units are popular among smaller crushing operators because they are versatile and easy to move between sites. In large quarries the greatest benefit is obtained by combining a primary crawler-mounted crusher unit with mobile belt conveyors which eliminates the need for costly haulage by dump truck. Savings of up to 40 per cent in production costs prior to secondary crushing have been achieved. Today the environmental aspect in quarrying is assuming ever greater importance. Besides being costly the dump trucks are also the major source of dust and exhaust fumes within a quarry. A complete face crushing system consisting of a crawler-mounted crusher unit and mobile belt conveyors can be electrically driven and can be equipped with dust encapsulation and dust collectors. A mobile crushing unit is not a new idea. From the mid-1950s onwards the mobile and self-propelled units have been built equipped with crawlers, tyres or walking mechanisms, with weights usually of 500-1000 t. Due to their massive size these unit are not mobile in the same way as the today's mobile units. It is not feasible to move them more than a few times a year unlike today's fully mobile units which are often relocated once an hour. This means that the massive units can not continuously follow the production face and their loading always requires a certain amount of haulage. Today the mining industry is facing new challenges. With low mineral prices and high labour costs, increasing productivity is essential for survival. New standards are also being set for the labour safety and the environment. Large research programs have been launched to meet these challenges. However, technology which can partly solve these problems already exist and is only waiting to be introduced into underground applications as well - the mobile crushing unit followed by belt conveying. As in surface operations the elimination of truck haulage also brings considerable savings in operating costs in underground mines and reduces the amount of dust and exhaust gases generated. An additional benefit especially in underground applications is improved safety. In an underground mine most accidents are caused by moving vehicles.

Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. The operations of the Mount Morgan gold tailings retreatment plant were significantly improved in 1984 by the desliming of the CIP plant feed, which reduced cyanide consumption and increased percent gold dissolution. Subsequently, the development of slimes treatment, incorporating gold leaching from slimes solids by copper cyanide complexes in the process water, and gold adsorption on to carbon in an environment lacking free cyanide was successfully implemented. Mount Morgan was initially mined for gold commencing in 1882 on the auriferous ironstone cap to the sulphide ore body. During the history of mining and processing at Mount Morgan the operations have developed through numerous phases of gold and copper production, operating almost continuously through until the final closure in late 1990. The final phase of processing was the retreatment of tailings, predominantly flotation tailings accumulated since the 1930s, for the recovery of gold and minor silver. Tailings retreatment commenced in 1982 with the commissioning of a 10 000 tonnes per day CIP plant to treat some 40 million tonnes of tailings at an average grade of 1.08 g/t Au. The initial operations were hampered by high cyanide consumption and poor gold dissolution on the mixed siliceous/pyritic tailings. The successful development and implementation of the desliming of the CIP plant feed in 1984 (as described by Parsons and Hampshire, 1986) reduced cyanide consumption by 40 per cent, and raised gold extraction by 13 per cent points by virtue of significantly higher dissolved oxygen levels. The finer portion of the reclaimed tailings were deslimed by eighty 100 mm diameter AKW cyclones, with the desliming cyclone overflow thickened in a Warman 30 in diameter thickener for water recovery and slimes disposal. Operation of the desliming plant involved the discarding of a slime fraction representing about 15 per cent of the reclaimed feed. Although gold-bearing, the high content of cyanicides and oxygen consumers within the slime negated any conventional treatment of this stream with free cyanide for gold recovery. The natural lixiviant behaviour of the soluble copper cyanide complexes for gold, which was extremely evident at Mount Morgan, directed efforts in this area. Enhancement of gold leaching with a deficiency or near absence of detectable free cyanide, but with significant levels of copper cyanide complex from recycled process water were examined. Adsorption of this solubilised gold onto carbon in a similarly difficult environment required close examination.

Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. By determining the value of each capital before and after the application of proven innovations, the presentation will outline how and where value can be created across all five capitals over the life of a project or operation.The paper will demonstrate how the application of proven innovations significantly transforms the value-proposition of a mineral resource project or operation by generating additional value across all of the five capitals, reducing project risk, thus generating value for all stakeholders.CITATION:Jones, M, 2015. Centennial Coal operates the Springvale longwall mining operation which extracts coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale, and the neighbouring Angus Place mine, have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions where combinations of a relatively high stress regime and weak, laminated roof and extensive geological faulting has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life. Following development, the mines underground roadways can experience high levels of roof movement which may lead to roof falls. Multipoint wire extensometers are extensively used throughout the mine for roadway condition monitoring, and to reactively drive remedial strata support through trigger action response plans (TARPs).As a result of the use of high-density extensometer monitoring over a long period, the mines have an extensive archive of legacy data. Data processing has evolved over time in order to accommodate the increasing data volume, including direct data entry from the recently introduced hard-wired real-time monitoring instruments. It is likely that telemetric real-time instruments will be introduced in the future, which will cause another step change in data management requirements. This paper discusses the transition to and evolution of relational database management systems for extensometer and associated data.This paper also presents case studies of the use of a new software tool for reprocessing legacy data to enable time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. The software can be used proactively in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. It interfaces directly with the widely used ExtoChart database software and can be presented with scale drawings of geological and geotechnical data to allow correlation of monitoring data results with risk factors.CITATION:Corbett, P and Sheffield, P, 2015.
