A theoretical model has been developed to predict the probability of particle collection by air bubbles in a quiescent flotation pulp. The model considers the effects of both hydrodynamic and surface chemistry forces acting during the bubble-particle interaction. Hydrodynamic forces considered include the gravitational, buoyancy, streamline and film thinning resistance forces. The surface chemistry forces considered include the electrostatic, dispersion and hydrophobic forces. The hydrophobic force has been estimated from extended DLVO theory. The model is capable of predicting hydrodynamic and surface chemistry conditions under which bubble-particle adhesion is possible. Validity of the model has been verified experimentally.

Copper-gold deposits associated with iron oxide rich rocks (ironstones) form a distinctive and significant ore association which occurs widely, but not exclusively, in the Proterozoic. The ironstone association is geochemically distinct from the BIF-hosted gold association (Phillips and Groves, 1983). Not only is the former association higher in its copper and commonly uranium, FEE, ¦bismuth, molybdenum contents, but also the ironstones in many cases do not originate as chemical sediments. Although both associations form in metamorphic environs, they reflect differing tectonostratigraphic settings and with consequent differences in ore-forming fluids and ore-forming mechanisms. This paper discusses the nature and origin of the ironstone-related copper-gold association, with particular reference to the Tennant Creek district in northern Australia, and emphasises the two stage origin of mineralisation. The genetic model developed has significant implications for other ore-bearing environments.

The history, operation and design of the Secor continuous rod production process is described. The effective operation of the plant is influenced by accurate monitoring and control of molten metal properties, mould release application, coolant application and composition and correct setting of all operating parameters. Optimum selection of explosives by means of monitoring explosive performance can lead to increased profitability through the control of fragmentation, a reduction in hangingwall and footwall damage and overall drill and blast costs. Studies conducted at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company underground copper mine evaluated in situ the performance of four explosive types. Measurements included monitoring the levels of induced shock energy and the attenuation thereof with distance. The velocity of detonation (VOD) of these explosives was also measured using in-hole techniques. Assessment of these results, together with a knowledge of the rock mass strength, facilitated the selection of an explosive that was best suited to the given rock mass conditions.

A thick sequence of alkaline intrusions and volcanic rocks underlies a Quaternary caldera on Liliir Island. The sequence is host to a still active sub-aerial hydrothermal system and associated epithermal gold mineralisation. Sub-horizontal alteration horizons exhibit progressively increasing chondrite norma-lised (La/Lu) en and (La/Sm) cn ratios from unaltered shoshonites, to the potassic alteration zone, to the argillic altera-tion zone to the advanced argillic alte-ration zone. The increasing fractionation of HEE, and especially of LHEE, up the alteration sequence is the result of de-creasing pH, temperature and alkalinity of the hydrothermal fluids with increa-sing alteration intensity. HRE3 were especially mobile in argillic and advanced argillic alteration units characterised by acid fluid conditions and large fluid volumes. Abundant Cl, S and CO2 within the hydrothermal fluids and thus abundant REE complexing agents and large fluid volumes favoured the mobility of REE during hydro-thermal alteration of the volcanic rocks and intrusions. Steam escape, mixing of the gases with groundwater and a change from a magmatic neutral chloride hydro-thermal system to a meteoric acid sulphate system was accompanied by liquid/vapour ratio changes, pronounced alkalinity, pH and temperature decreases, and fluid/rock ratio increases. This caused the mobili-sation, fractionation and deposition of PF.F.

Broken Hill has a long history of mining and it is without doubt a world-class deposit. It has seen production since 1885, notwithstanding the strikes that made the city infamous in days gone by and has given rise to three of the nation's leading mining companies; BHP, North and CRA. Prior to the formation of Pasminco in 1988, the mining and exploration activities were undertaken by separate companies who were business competitors and tended to operate in relative isolation. There were a few notable exceptions such as the Central Geological Survey of 1936 - 38 (Gustafson, 1939; Gustafson et al, 1950) and the Mine Managers' Association. The latter sponsored many university based research projects. At a local level there was good communication and cross fertilisation within this remote outback centre through personal contacts and professional bodies such as The AusIMM. Pasminco was formed by the merging of the lead-zinc interests of CRA Ltd and North Broken Hill Ltd. In Broken Hill this meant the joining together of North Mine and ZC Mines, the two largest mines then operating on the Line of Lode, to form Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations. Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

The New Guinea Mobile Belt is the northern zone of the Melanesian Orogeny (Dow and Sukamto, 1984), which consists of a complex zone ofupthrusted and accreted, regionally metamorphosed geosynclinal sediments and volcanics of Mesozoic to Eocene age and the overlying sediments. On the northern margin of this accreted terrane, formed an Eocene to Middle Miocene island arc. The North New Guinea Basin formed during the Upper Oligocene on the accreted margin. The depositional history of this basin is complicated by major crustal movements during the Upper Miocene to Holocene. During the Middle to Upper Miocene two magmatic arcs were emplaced. The northern magmatic arc is in part, spatically and genetically related to the Eocene to Middle Miocene island arc. The Maramuni-Utawa Magmatic Arc (southern) is a result of the Oligocene accretion and regional metamorphism. Coincident witt these magmatic arcs are belts of mineralization containing porphyry Cu-Au, epithermal/hydrothermal Au, Ag + Cu-Pb-Zn, exhalative Cu-Pb-Zn + Ag-Au, lateritic Ni-Cr-Co + PGE and alluvial Au, PGE, Cr occurrences and deposits. An intergrated tectonic model is presented for these and other data for the northern zone of the Melanesian Orogeny.

Toppling failure of a jointed rock slope was studied by using the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM). Compared with the classical discrete element model, the DLSM has the advantages of free calibration of micro-mechanical parameters and easy to represent discontinuities, and is more computationally efficient. In this work, the DLSM was used to investigate the toppling failure of jointed rock slopes. The numerical simulation was verified against experimental data from a centrifuge model test on a jointed rock slope. Both the horizontal deformations and failure pattern observed in the centrifuge test were reasonably reproduced using the DLSM. Then, the mechanism of the flexural toppling failure was studied numerically by using a parameter analysis. One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.

This paper discusses a long range mine plan development at the Santa Fe Pacific Gold Twin Creeks Mine based on the reserves of Mega pit. The key constraints of the schedule development included two types of mill ore targets (sulphide and oxide mill ore), consideration of blending of six chemical constituents (sulphide sulphur, carbonate, organic carbon, the ratio of iron/[arsenic, antimony]), and mining of acid generating and acid neutralizing waste at pre-defined proportions. Precipitation of inorganic compounds or metals from aqueous solutions can either be physical (crystallisation) or chemical in nature. Chemical processes are varied; they may be due to hydrolytic action, due to ionic interaction, or due to reduction (ie transfer of electrons). Transfer of electrons in reduction processes may take place homogeneously or heterogeneously. In the first case it may be ionic or nonionic in nature.
