Rand Mines, Limited, located in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa has recently completed feasibility studies which have lead to the initiation of two major coal strip mining ventures. A minicomputer based mine planning system was developed to perform the feasibility studies. The broad approach of this system is to utilise inter.-actively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of mining engineers and geologists. This paper reports briefly on the outline of the system and at greater length upon certain aspects of its use.

Gold Tellurides are important sources of gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Cripple Creek, Colorado and Vatukoula, Fiji. Unlike free gold, the tellurides of gold are rather refractory and the usual treatment practice has been to oxidize the tellurides, either chemically or by roasting prior to cyanidation of the liberated free gold. There is a large measure of disagree- ment as to the actual cause of the refractory nature of gold tellurides. In order to investigate the leaching chemistry of gold telluride, a study was undertaken on the thermodynamics and kinetics of its dissolution using electrochemical methods. From this study suitable direct leaching condi- tions are suggested. In acidic chloride solutions gold telluride can be leached using iron(III) as the oxidant. At lower acid concentrations the reaction is controlled by the formation of a passivating film of H2TeO3. In alkaline solutions containing cyanide the rate of gold telluride dissolution increases with increasing pH and strength of oxidant. However, this can result in excessive consumption of cyanide in the presence of stronger oxidants.

Cataclysmic or flood-like release of gas-charged brines, hydrocarbons and slurries accompanied widespread mineralisation of Upper Devonian environments. These are well represented in the Canning and Burdekin Basins of Western Australia and Queensland respectively.The Burdekin Basin provides particularly instructive vein structural sequences. These fall into organic residue to carbonate paragenetic sequences which are known elsewhere to record progressive decarboxylation. Fibrous veins indicate overpressure in fractures with organic residues, acids and gas derivatives driven to overlying groundwater flows. This combination of large flow rates and potent organic mineralisers led to extensive arsenical rare-metal mineralisation which is similar to that concentrated in Upper Devonian extinction horizons of the Canning Basin. Organic-residue mineralisation appears concentrated by certain hvdrostructures and targeted upon particular species. These controls need to be understood to guide modern management stragegies for mineralised organic and nitrogenous wastes.

In the mineral processing industry solid-liquid separation within a thickener usually requires the addition of a synthetic flocculant to enhance the settling rate of fine particles. The characteristics of the resulting flocculated suspensions may vary considerably depending upon the physical and chemical conditions which prevail during the flocculation process. For example, parameters such as flocculant type, dosage and solution concentration, surface chemical characteristics of particles and the suspension agitation conditions can influence the degree to which the particles aggregate. Aggregated suspensions exhibit various structures, and range from those composed of small, dense aggregates to those containing large, voluminous aggregates. The size distribution and structural type of the aggregates which form within the feed-well of a thickener can have a dramatic effect upon overall thickener performance. Thickener performance cannot be optimized without optimization of the aggregate structure produced in the feed by synthetic flocculant addition. This has required the development of new techniques to quantify the nature of aggregated suspensions, details of which are presented in this paper.

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

Results from current NERDDC funded research into the geotechnology of highwall trench mining methods have clear implications for mine planners in the areas of blast design, trench shape, location of the surcharge spoil and remnant coal pillar design.Adoption of successful smooth wall blasting techniques not only removes safety hazards from the trench face, but limits development of bedding partings at the seam contacts that interrupt the smooth transition of stress across the coal seam.

At any given time, the tidal force subjects massive regions to a spatially uniform load. The deformation of any large structure due to these forces is proportional to the elastic properties of the structure. In this aspect, the tidal force applies a load in a manner similar to that of a large-scale testing machine. Any anomalies in the measured tidal response must reflect alterations in the average elastic response of the massive structure. In the present work, tidal tilt measurements obtained in the wall of a large dam are used to infer changes in the response of the dam to applied loads. In particular, it is found that the dam response has changed by approximately 13 percent, on average, for two monitoring periods separated by 5 years. It is possible that these changes were produced by the different volumes of water in the dam for the monitoring periods. The tidal measurement technique can also be applied to monitor changes In the average structural response of large underground and surface masses relevant to coal and metal mines.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

High pressure (-1.2 GPa) Early Cretaceous granulite facies orthogneisses in Fiordland, New Zealand are in tectonic contact with a cover sequence comprising mid-Palaeozoic amphibolite facies metasediments, subordinate metavolcanic rocks and syntectonic granitic orthogneisses. This cover sequence and the underlying granulites constitute upper and lower crustal plates of a mid-Cretaceous metamorphic core complex whose emplacement was linked to continental rifting and the Late Mesozoic breakup of the Pacific margin of Gondwana. Exhumation of the lower plate granulites occurred in two stages. The first stage was associated with extreme attenuationand tectonic denudation of the cover sequence accompanying emplacement of the core complex, leading to rapid uplift of the granulites but without generating the large volumes of Fiordland-derived sedimentary detritus normally expected if uplift and erosion were the only factors involved in unroofing the granulites. Final uplift and exposure of the granulites at the surface occurred mainly during the last 10 Ma in response to transpression across the mid-Tertiary Alpine Fault and/or the obduction of Fiordland continental crust over oceanic crust of the Tasman Sea.

Widespread interest in reopening Victorian gold mines, regenerated by increased gold prices, has highlighted the technical problems prevailing. A combination of historical lease legislation, minimal recent mining activity, forms of mineralisation, high insurance rates and tortuous approval requirements for mining mean the potential investor assessing an old mine must address a wide range of technical problems. The requirements for establishment of ore reserves and attraction of capital for mine development are fundamental. Underground reef mining was historically generally on a small scale, and as mining on many fields ceased about the turn of the century, past geological and production records cannot be correlated to personal experience and comment. The impact of modern mining technology on future reef mining will be to reduce operating costs and significantly improve historic metallurgical recovery. Roth these are commensurate with increased capital costs. Workers compensation rates currently applicable in Victoria are many times higher than in other states, adding significantly to operating costs. Establishment of a pilot plant testing facility in central Victoria would provide an invaluable service in treating bulk samples essential for grade and recovery assessments of Victorian ores.

The effect of stresses and acoustic emissions on the gas permeability of coal was investigated in the field and the laboratory in order to find an estimative method of the practicability of gas drainage. In the field, acoustic emissions and gas emissions during gas drainage drilling were monitored tentatively at some coal mines in Japan and China.In the laboratory, acoustic emissions from coal specimens in addition to gas permeability were measured during the triaxial compression loading in order to interpret the results monitored in the field. Besides, the opening of gas permeation channels in coal was considered on the basis of the experimental results.

Column Flotation cannot be used indiscriminately. Based on extensive pilot plant experience at Lakefield Research, a number of limiting parameters have been identified for the application of column cell flotation. Parameters of importance are the use of wash water, flotable mineral content, pulp viscosity, type of mineral selectivity being sodght and degree of mineral liberation. The paper discusses when wash water should be used and the positioning of a column within the circuit as this is important to maintain a sound water balance for the circuit and prevent excessive circulating loads. Other areas of debate are pulp chemistry, very low and high weight recovery, for which the conventional column is a poor selection of equipment, and treatment of complex ores, where the separation of valuable minerals is more difficult than non-sulphide, sulphide mineral separation. Based on these observations, the application of column flotation must be carefully considered or can be optimised.

In Australia, current production of rare earth element (REE) minerals, monazite and xenotime, occurs as by-product from titanium-enriched placers and beach sands. Undeveloped REE resources are associated with carbonatites, alkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, phosphorites, cemented fluvial sandstones, and uranium mineralisations. The REE are held within a range of minerals including silicates, phosphates, a1uminophosphates, carbonates, and oxides. The development of these REE resources may require new processing and extraction methods. The distribution of REE in the currently mined ore minerals, monazite and bastnaesite, does not match that requested by the market. Exploration for new REE resources should be focused on ores with more marketable REE distributions, particularly with heavy REE, neodymium, samarium, europium and yttrium enrichments. Such ores occur within alkaline igneous rocks, in laterites overlying carbonatites and alkaline igneous rocks, and in placers derived from low-grade regional and contact metamorphic sediments. Lateritic REE deposits may be easily and economically mined by shovel in open pits and are unlikely to require extensive crushing and milling. In addition, lateritic REE clay deposits may be processed by simple hydrometallurgicaltreatment mehtods.

The well-defined relatively simple crystal structure of fluorite and its ionic bonding make it a model system for study. Our understanding of fluorite/ oleate flotation chemistry continues to grow but as yet remains incomplete. Besides a review of our understanding of this system, recent findings are presented in this paper, and new research horizons are identified.

Drainage of gas has been practiced overseas for almost half a century. Peal advances in drainage of gas to combat high emissions became practicable in the late fifties and early sixties when the technology was standardised to use it under a variety of mining and geological conditions. Today methane drainage is practiced in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ibmania, U.S.S.R., China, Japan, Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico. Australia entered the list of countries using gas drainage on 3rd March, 1980 when the first full scale gas drainage system was set up and commissioned at West Cliff Colliery to drain gas from the Bulli Seam. Methods used in Europe are different from those used in North America, Japan and Australia mainly because of the different mining methods and also because of the limited number of seams under extraction, relatively new coal fields, and comparatively larger distance between the seams. In spite of the difference in the technique, the basic aim is the same and that is to improve ventilation and reduce ventilation costs, alleviate dangerous gas accummulation, overcome outburst hazards and ultimately make mining safer and more efficient. The surface treatment works in the Mount Isa Mines Limited copper stream consist of a concentrator and smelter with annual capacities of 5.6 million tonnes of ore and production of 155 000 tonnes of anode copper respectively. Both plants have been sites for process optimisation in recent years, the emphasis being to achieve productivity gains in each particular plant. The continued low real world prices for copper resulted in an in-depth review of the entire copper process stream. This indicated the need for developments within both the concentrator and smelter, and changes to operating strategy to ensure that the entire treatment stream could be optimised. The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. The instruments are described which measure rock mass displacements, permeability changes and alterations to hydrology. Slurry density measurement, specially in cyclone feed streams, is fundamental to grinding circuit control. With the purpose of increasing the availability of such a measurement, the design of a soft-sensor in an actual grinding plant is addressed in this paper. The system is designed to substitute the momentary unavailability of the real density sensor, either because it has failed or because it has been removed for any other reason. The ARMAX model structure is determined using the stepwise regression method. Starting with a list of the candidate variables, the method selects, one by one, and in a systematic manner the variables which best model the measurement to be replaced, choosing them from the set of presumably correlated candidate variables. In this paper not only the single measurements are included in the list of candidates, but also combinations of such measurements having physical significance. A phenomenological model has been built with the purpose of determining these combinations. It turned out that in most of the cases the components of combined measurements having physical significance were selected by the stepwise regression method, instead of the single measurements. Actual grinding plant data is used to determine the model structure, to estimate the model parameters and to test the predictive capability of the developed soft-sensors. Good results are shown to be obtained during periods of up to 30 hours of the density soft-sensor operation.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.
