A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.

In this paper, we developed and implemented a fuzzy logic expert system capable of evaluating the degree of sustainability within the context of gold mining operations. The newly introduced approach of evaluating sustainability in the gold mining industry has the merit of sufficiently handling diverse, sustainable, development-related qualitative and quantitative data owing to fuzzy logic technology capabilities in dealing with linguistic syntax. The economic, environmental and social indicator inputs were independently evaluated and then combined with the aid of fuzzy logic to provide an overall sustainability index on a scale of zero to one. A total of 66 independent indicators were identified and applied in our model. The novelty of this work lies in providing a coherent numerical and automated approach in evaluating sustainability in the context of gold mining operations. In addition, the model can aid policy- and decision-makers in arriving at consistent decisions regarding the degree of sustainability on various aspects of gold mining operations. The functionality of this model will be illustrated through several examples.

The efficiency of water sprays in suppressing airborne colliery dust depends on many variable factors. A survey of previous work in this field shows that swirl spray nozzles are the best dust suppressors.Investigations carried out in an experimental dust chamber show that, in spite of limitations to the application of water sprays in underground use, promising dust suppression efficiencies in mechanised mining can be obtained with swirl spray nozzles.INTRODUCTIONA dust hazard has always been associated with coal mining, and the recent growth of mechanisation has resulted in a greater production of fine coal and dust, thus increasing the hazard. A better knowledge and appreciation of the medical aspects and dust explosion factors has led to practices reducing the seriousness of the problem. However, the dust hazard still exists and its control is basically an engineering problem.Dust, as with any atmospheric pollution, may be removed from the, mine by ventilation, which is an indirect method of control. Direct methods, in which the dust is prevented from being produced and from becoming airborne, should be employed where possible. Of these direct methods the most significant is the use of water sprays.THE DUST HAZARDAn appreciation of the physical nature of the more important dust hazards is necessary before considering the removal of the hazard. The main hazards associated with colliery dusts are the health hazard and the explosion hazard. "Dust" comprises solid particles of size minus 20 mesh Tyler (833 microns).

llmenite from the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, shows exceptional reactivity with dilute sulphuric acid. Based on this, a cyclic acid leaching process was developed for the production of material with more than 98% TiO2, suitable as a substitute for mineral rutile.Titanium hydrate is recovered from the leach liquor by hydrolysis, and is calcined to give the required product.Ferrous sulphate is crystallized from the hydrolysis filtrates, which after concentration are returned to the leaching stage. The need for further evaluation of the process on a larger scale is indicated.

Mine life cycle planning and enduring value are taking centre stage to meet corporate goals and deliver socio-economic outcomes for communities over the life of a mine. There is a general agreement in the literature about mining-induced effects on locals adjacent to mining operations and subsequent closure. In response, international regulatory bodies, through the implementation of global agendas, encourage exploration and mining companies to embrace the concept of corporate social responsibility. This concept is designed to provide sustainable outcomes and maintain a social license to operate over the life of a mine. This paper proposes a practical application of the sustainable livelihood approach as a tool for international planning. With this approach as the governing framework, this paper proposes an innovative tool for mine life cycle planning. Based on the findings, this paper discusses the socio-economic impacts of mining and mine closure. It also argues that transferring some of the benefits from mining to create lasting value for communities needs to be considered at the initial stages of planning for the mine and the community. Findings also indicate that conditions such as a strong local government, good governance arrangements, relevant capacity-building for sustainable livelihoods and a diversified economy are important to transferring some of the benefits from mining to create lasting value for communities. The paper is based on a mixed research technique for data analysis and a case study methodology. The significance of blasthole stemming in determining blasting efficiency has been extensively studied for small diameter holes using gelignite explosives. Recent developments in blasting technology with the use of large diameter holes and low cost blasting agents have not included studies of the effectiveness of different types of stemming materials. A review of previous measurement techniques and the relevance of these earlier results to present stemming practice is presented in this paper. A survey of operating mines in Australia provided information for this analysis. The value of stemming in reducing blast noise and improving blasting efficiency is generally accepted but the use of bulk-loaded explosives in underground operations has resulted in the practice of eliminating the use of stemming material.In surface operations drill cuttings are used for stemming on the basis of availability rather than efficiency in providing resistance to movement. The development of laboratory testing techniques, based on noise level and borehole pressure measurements, to evaluate the relative efficiency of different types of stemming materials is described. The results of an extensive series of tests with ANFO explosive showed similar trends tothose obtained from earlier published results with gelignite type explosives. Conclusive quantitative results on the relative effectiveness of different stemming materials will require minor modifications to the existingequipment. Observations and the results of pressure measurements indicated the presence of shock wave effects which caused the ejection of the top section of the stemming column when using coarsely fragmented material.

In the course of the last twenty eight years the copper lodes of New Caledonia have been periodically worked or abandoned, until quite recently, probably attracted by the higher price of the metal, British capital has again been induced to embark upon the further development of several copper properties, which at present give reasonable promise of becoming regular producers. Owing to its proximity to Australia (only a three day's journey by mail steamer from Sydney) New Caledonia becomes of additional interest to Australian commerce in general, and it is to be hoped that the French Government may see their way before long to make the best of this natural position, to the mutual benefit of both countries concerned.Op till now all copper ores and concentrates which have been shipped from New Caledonia, were treated in Australian smelting works furthermore, Australian mine managers and miners have from time to time been connected with New Caledonian mining ventures, but, unfortunately, it must be said that nearly everyone of them returned to Australia thoroughly disgusted with his experience over there. Even to the casual observer, it is not so very difficult to find a proper explanation for these shortcomings in the peculiar economic conditions of the 'French colony, as many of the objections which have hitherto existed in connection with mining operations, were the direct consequences of a system of colonisation which could not possibly have been productive of better results.

Ground conditions at the Kencana mine, Indonesia, are generally poor and an underhand cut and fill mining method is used for extraction. Due to these poor ground conditions, all vertical development has been conducted using blind, top-down, sink and line excavation methods. Due to time constraints, raiseboring was considered the only viable excavation method for the installation of a return ventilation system for the K2 (Kencana extension) project. In order to achieve successful raiseboring in the poor ground conditions a number of strategies were used including: a detailed geotechnical study for optimal position of the shaft/s, splitting shaft excavation vertically, raiseboring of multiple smaller diameter shafts, extensive pregrouting, installation of drainage holes, and rapid installation of support following excavation.

Mineralisation processes in epithermal deposits in the North Island of New Zealand are best illustrated by considering the two most productive deposits: Waihi and the Thames Bonanza Zone (TBZ), which have different mineralogies and ore shoots geometries. These two deposits can be taken as typical of certain styles of epithermal deposits worldwide, and recognition of their differences can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value. Waihi, the major economic producer in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a vertical interval of 600 m which consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, base metal sulphides and electrum. They are found in the foot wall of earlier quartz veins which contain quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite and adularia. The Thames Bonanza Zone which was the second biggest producer in the CVZ has discrete near-vertical ore shoots over 300 m vertically, which consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, electrum and in their upper parts barite, that are enclosed in veins of quartz.   The gold mineralisation in both deposits is considered to be a co-precipitate with pyrite, with that at Waihi produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system. That at the TBZ was produced by mixing a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow proximal to the system's upflow.

Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

This paper explores the structural/physical and policy based issues that have lead to the apparent resource conflict between Forestry and Mining on the West Coast. Both industries are important to the West Coast and bear many similarities, particularly at the corporate end of the mining scale. However there are very distinct structural differences which set the scene for friction at the boundaries. Examples of how mining impacts upon forestry illustrate where some of the friction arises and provides some insight as to where some solutions are or may be found.

"Most of VictoriaÆs rivers and aquifers are already fully allocated or reaching full allocation. In regions without a well-established water market, access to water entitlements to facilitate new development is limited. In areas with established water markets, mine developers face an undue cost burden in circumstances where they are only planning to consume a fraction of the water entitlements that they purchase. The challenge for water managers is to ensure protection of water resources and other water users without creating an unnecessary disincentive for those types of developments that return most of the water that they take from water sources. The opportunity for development of a mine is explicitly linked to a particular location and must be developed where a resource is located or it cannot be exploited at all. Regulatory arrangements that facilitate development may have a positive impact on economic development, particularly where water availability is a potentially limiting factor. Net volume licensing has the potential to allow increased economic outcomes through improved licensing of access to water. Net volume licensing differs from traditional water licensing in that it authorises access to water on the basis of ænet useÆ rather than æthe gross volume takenÆ. This paper asks under what conditions net volume licensing is likely to be feasible and effective. In particular, the paper examines the information and accuracy requirements to allow net volume licensing decisions to be made. This work is based around five case studies in Victoria that were used to examine the potential for net volume licensing for mines and quarries. Assessing a potential net volume licensing arrangement requires the regulating authority to have an understanding of the inputs and outputs of water to a site. In contrast, assessment of take and use licences consider only a single input. It was concluded that the conditions that lend themselves to net volume licensing include: well understood water inputs and outputs, including appropriate accuracy of information where the location of site water inputs and outputs are the same where the timing of extraction and discharge can be managed to minimise impact on the water resource.A key remaining challenge is establishing an accounting framework that allows net volume licensing under current water resource limits. Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

Dioctahedral clay minerals in the volcanic-hosted Golden Cross epithermal Au deposit, New Zealand, have been investigated by petrography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy/analytical electron microscopy (TEM/AEM) to determine the nature of these minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit. Heterogeneity in the distribution of dioctahedral clays is observed from the hand-specimen scale to the TEM scale, indicating that primary rock textures and fluid pathways (related to rock type, porosity/permeability and fluid/rock ratios), in addition to temperature, are important factors controlling the distribution. As the proportion of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) decreases, TEM observations show decreasing layer stacking order, parallelism of packets, and packet size, and increasing apparent porosity. AEM structural data show a corresponding decrease in AlIV, AlVI, and K+, and an increase in Si, Ca2+, and Fetotal. The observations of this study indicate that local dioctahedral clay mineral reaction progress is controlled mainly by permeability and structure, but that this is superimposed on a predictable, system-wide clay mineral distribution that is controlled by temperature and fluid/rock ratio.

Site specific geotechnical data, deposit characteristics and method of mining are key factors when assessing an appropriate slope design philosophy. Mining geotechnics should be viewed as an iterative design process linked closely with mine planning, development and operational safety constraints. This case study presents geotechnical investigations for slope design at Macraes Flat Gold Mine using kinematic, probabilistic and economic analyses tempered with knowledge of site specific conditions. The recommended designs not only reduce early waste stripping tonnages but also provide data to optimise final walls.
