The role of automation in the environmental management of the various stages of mining projects is discussed. Remote sensing can be useful in the exploration phase, but tends not to have sufficient resolution for individual operations. Automatic samplers, whether for meteorology, air or water, are widely used, but can have operational problems. The environmental scientist, the electronics engineer and the computer programmer must combine in the future to develop products which are applicable, robust and simple to use.

There has been much debate in the past as to whether the Australasian Institute of Mining and Meteorology ("AusIMM") should issue valuation guidelines in addition to the ASX and NCSC requirements. My experience in preparing independent expert reports has been that "best practice" sets higher standards than any laws or requirements set out by the ASX and NCSC. This is where I see the AusIMM coming in.

Some exploration techniques are similar, others widely different.In peripheral matters such as permits, regulation procedures, land and compensation, there are many similarities. SLon magnetic separators utilise the combined force fields of magnetism, pulsating fluid and gravity to continuously beneficiate fine weakly magnetic minerals. They possess the advantages of high efficiency, low operative cost and high reliability. Until now there were about 600 SLon magnetic separators widely applied in processing oxidised iron ores, ilmenite, manganese ore and many other minerals. The major upswing in, gold processing this decade has brought the technology of heap leaching, carbon in pulp and carbon in leach, flotation for gold and tailings retreatment to Queensland. In many cases operators have developed or improved these processes to treat difficult ores or to cope with local climatic conditions.

A basic method for designing reasonable jig cycles for movable-screen jigs is presented in this paper. The reliability and effectiveness of the designed jig cycle was verified with tests performed on an artificial mixed material. An iron ore (12 - 100 mm) from Huashugo Iron Mine, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company, was treated in the TJD-75 movable-screen jig using the designed jig cycle. A good result was achieved. The procedure presented here should provide a reliable technique for the design of a commercial movable-screen jig.

Arm Royalty systems of different types are used throughout Australia by both state and federal governments to raise revenue and thus facilitate in the proper distribution of mineral wealth. Royalty systems should be neutral and equitable but by their very nature these objectives are impossible to obtain. Because of the individual nature of mineral deposits, in particular variable cutoff grades and tonnages, governments should be aware of the possible trade off between short and long term gains of the particular royalty scheme introduced.

Smelting at Mount Morgan started in 1906 with blast furnaces which were replaced by a reverberatory furnace in 1939. The second reverberatory, commissioned in 1944, was replaced by a copper flash smelter in 1972. Flotation concentrates, dried to 0.05 per cent moisture, were oxidised under accurately controlled conditions and produced 45 per cent Cu matte and a slag in the flash smelter. The matte was converted to blister copper and the slag was slowly cooled before grinding and retreatment in a flotation concentrator.
