Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The increase in the zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit with magnetic conditioning was demonstrated to a very high level of statistical confidence.CITATION:Gurnett, I, Voigt, P, Lumsden, B and Lines, P, 2012. The Australian economy has been adversely affected by the hesitation in developing countries to commit to the construction of .new coal-fired power stations. World coal trade which was expected to grow at an appreciable rate has stagnated, world export coal prices have plummetted, and facilities in place in Australia for the production and export of coal are being underutilized. While in some countries this hesitation has been caused by a reduction in electricity load growth, another cause has been the unduly long lead-time imposed on developing countries by the conventional "Banker's Approach" to the planning and initiation of commitments to finance and construct coal-fired power plants. In some countries electricity growth has been met by increased usage of indigenous energy resources, even though this involves costs in excess of imported coal-fired power generation. The avoidance of foreign exchange commitments in these cases can however be desirable. In many other developing countries however, fuel oil continues to be used for power generation at a cost in foreign exchange of up to 50% above the total cost of coal fuel plus capital to construct a new coal-fired power station. The conventional "Bankers Approach" to new power station planning imposes the need for successive feasibility studies to satisfy the normal processes of international development lending agencies. No feasibility study can however, show how keen vendor countries may be to win major power plant contracts; and no feasibility study can determine whether the power station eventually procured will be one of the more reliable, at better than 80% availability, or one of the more unreliable at worse than 60% Availability.

Stratiform lead-zinc mineralization in the Soldiers Cap Group and Kuridala Formation of the Mount Isa Inlier is closely associated with iron-rich sedimentary units or "iron formation", and has many similarities to the Broken Hill deposit in New South Wales. Both the Soldiers Cap Group and the Kuridala Formation have been intensively explored for deposits of this type since the early nineteen- seventies. A mineralized belt of at least eight significant prospects has been identified, of which the Pegmont deposit is the largest and best known example. In most cases the mineralized horizons contain banded galena and sphalerite within a gangue of predominantly quartz-garnet- pyroxene-amphibole rock, sometimes containing a variety of other metamorphic silicates, and apatite. Chemically, the mineralized horizons are distinguished by higher than usual levels of one or more of total Fe, MnO, CaO and P205. Interpretation of patterns of mineral- ization within the belt is based on the Pegmont deposit, where a model of base metal sulphide deposition within restricted basins of iron-rich chemical sediment has been developed (Stanton and Vaughan, 1979). Broadly, the model envisages the deposition of higher grade lead-rich mineralization in the basin centre position, lower grade zinc- rich mineralization in a basin intermediate position, and much weaker copper-rich mineralization in a basin edge position. These three positions reflect a laterally continuous arrangement of silicate microfacies within the original iron-rich sediment.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, fatalities from road transport accidents represented an average of over 97 per cent of all transport related accidents between 1997 and 2002. With increasing traffic density, tunnels are becoming a more viable means of providing alternative travel routes to ease areas of congestion in the road transport network. However, unlike open road conditions, a fire incident in the confined space of a tunnel environment may impact upon many users that are remote from the incident location. In this context, designing for an appropriate level of safety in tunnels is therefore an important consideration for achieving consistency in the life safety measures for users of the road transport network. Unfortunately, like fire safety engineering design for buildings, there are presently no clear measures in the design processes to assess the adequacy of the design in terms of attaining the level of safety implicated in the design objectives. This is partly due to the indeterminate nature in which the design objective or the level of performance measure is stated û the intent of the objective is relatively clear but the measure of it is not. Another reason is the lack of a standardised procedure for determining the critical design variables affecting life safety. This is important to ascertain consistency in the use or adoption of the important parameters for design. This paper looks at the processes involved in the fire engineering design of road tunnels that are currently practised. A review of the design processes for fire safety in road tunnels is provided, which includes the range of fire scenarios in a tunnel environment, the traffic flow and composition, the relevant fire protection systems, the ventilation and smoke control system, the egress provisions and the benefits of incorporating fire brigade intervention. A simplified risk assessment approach is developed for a typical road tunnel to assess and evaluate the impact of a range of design parameters on life safety. Using a sensitivity technique, the important variables are then identified and means of reducing design variations associated with them are recommended. The technique may be further refined for use in the development of codes or guidelines in order to develop a suitable means of deriving more consistent design values, and hence achieve better consistency in the overall level of safety in the design.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. Diamond exploration in Queensland is influenced by the South African approach modified by the discovery of diamonds in Lamproite in Western Australia. The current approach is to explore for Kimberlite and Lamproite bodies using indicator minerals dispersed by fluvial and colluvial processes. In the north-west, diamonds are derived from kimberlitic and lamproitic sources, whereas those in the coastal and subcoastal areas of eastern Queensland are associated with xenoliths included in rocks formed during Cainozoic volcanism. In these areas, sapphire is commonly associated with diamonds. In New South Wales diamonds in economic quantities occur in alkali basaltic intrusions and a subduction model has been proposed for these occurrences (Barrows et al, 1996). Exploration for diamonds in Australia increased following the discovery and exploitation of the Argyle mine. State geological surveys have produced digital information on the local occurrences of diamonds. As part of the Smart Mining Initiative (2006 - 2010), the Geological Survey of Queensland compiled a database and report on microdiamonds and diamond indicator minerals from open file company exploration data from 1968 to 2008 from the Department of Mines and EnergyÆs QDEX system. Most exploration in Queensland was conducted with exploration for other commodities. There is no commercial exploitation of diamonds in Queensland and, to date, only rare occurrences of microdiamonds. There is a regional difference in diamond occurrences with the kimberlitic and lamproitic models favoured for the north-western regions of the State and the subduction (S-type model) favoured for the eastern coastal zone linked to Cainozoic alkalic basaltic volcanism. Further diamond exploration is warranted in Cainozoic basalt provinces along the eastern coastal and near coastal regions and in the north-west of the state in conjunction with airborne geophysics flown as part of current Departmental Smart initiatives. The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of an ongoing three-year government- and industry-funded research program. In order to assess the feasibility of various bio-remediation strategies, field-scale manipulations were conducted using enclosed mesocosms (limnocorrals). Two manipulation strategies were tested: addition of algal nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) to Main Zone Pit surface waters; and addition of algal nutrients (surface waters) and dissolved organic carbon (deep waters) to the Waterline Pit. Nutrient addition was conducted in order to stimulate algal production and enhance metal scavenging by biogenic particles, while dissolved organic carbon (ethanol) was added to increase oxygen demand and foster the development of sulfate reduction in pit bottom waters. Fertilisation resulted in rapid growth of natural phytoplankton populations in the surface waters of both pits. In the Main Zone Pit, the stimulation of algal growth resulted in the pronounced removal of both dissolved and total metals (Zn and Cu) from surface waters, with higher rates of metal removal being observed at higher nutrient additions. Metal removal could be attributed to the scavenging of dissolved metals by biogenic particles and subsequent particle settling. A similar pattern of removal from surface waters was observed in Waterline Pit (Zn and Cd). The addition of ethanol to deep waters in Waterline Pit was effective in promoting sulfate reduction in the lower layer. The development of reducing conditions resulted in near-quantitative removal of dissolved Zn and Cd, presumably as secondary metal sulfides. Iron, As and Ni profiles in Waterline Pit exhibited no evidence of removal from either surface waters or bottom waters. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the passive forms of bioremediation tested in these pit lakes may be effective for whole pit-lake remediation.

This paper contends that optimisation of energy resources through active control and predictive simulation modelling is possible, and that such monitoring leads to large savings in the electricity costs of hot mines (where refrigeration has to be employed). In addition, active monitoring and control can positively affect the establishment of a safe, healthy and productive working environment. In the entire optimisation process certain guidelines were set to ensure that the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act were met (South Africa). Varying the quantity of air supplied underground by means of variable speed drive (VSD) fans is one of the crucial factors in the interactive approach towards the optimisation of ventilation, as is refrigeration and the pumping requirements associated with refrigeration. This article highlights the interaction between the amount of air supplied and the effect it has on refrigeration requirements underground. This article also considers the effect that this would have on contaminant control. Various tools are available for ventilation and cooling design for mining. A lot of these tools are based on the assumption of steady state conditions and do not take into account instantaneous changes in conditions, day-to-day, or hour-to-hour (such as for temperature and contaminants). They also do not take into account the optimisation of energy resources related to the creation of the acceptable underground conditions. With these tools worst-case and best-case scenarios are identified, and strategic decisions are made accordingly. Currently, the amount of the fresh air, the velocity of the air, and its general temperature in the mine are only changed when one production phase changes into another (or when unacceptable conditions occur as a result of poor design or neglect). This means that during a specific production phase (which can last for several months), there can be an oversupply, or undersupply, of energy resources, which will obviously affect the concentration levels of the various contaminants (through under or oversupply of air).

Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited (æSolid EnergyÆ) is a state-owned coal mining company, producing 4.0 Mtpa from a number of opencast and underground mines in the Huntly, West Coast and Southland regions in New Zealand. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries. Solid Energy is expanding and developing its risk management practices across all areas of the business: strategic planning û extensive use of scenario analysis and probabilistic modelling over a 20 year period; investment decisions û development and application of a rigorous six stage æProject Assessment GuidelineÆ process for all new mine developments; geological and geotechnical risk assessment techniques û use of best practice techniques including seismic surveys; financial risk management û a dynamic approach to hedging based on effects based analysis of Cash Flow at Risk analysis against preset risk tolerances; risk financing û the use of a captive insurance subsidiary, and the experiences of a small coal company seeking to obtain insurance cover on a æhardÆ international insurance market; and integrated risk management û the challenges of trying to implement a broad integrated risk management approach across the company, that supports implementation of strategic objectives as well as meeting æcompliance or legislative basedÆ risk management requirements.

XstrataÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) is a world-class mining operation producing in excess of six million tonnes of copper ore per annum from its underground mining operations. The Mount Isa Copper Mines have been producing from the underground operations since 1952. Current copper reserves are 87 million tonnes at 2.8 per cent Cu, extending the mineÆs life beyond 2018. The underground orebodies in the copper mines are divided into nine distinct areas and are mined by sublevel open stoping techniques. One of the nine areas is the hanging wall lens, which consists of two sections; a northern lens (NHWL) and a southern lens (SHWL). The SHWL has a proven reserve of 2.2 million tonnes with an average grade of 2.9 per cent copper. Stopes in the SHWL have an average size of approximately 245 000 tonnes and will be extracted in a primary-secondary mining sequence, producing ore until 2009. This paper discusses various aspects of stope design applied in the southern hanging wall lens, including sequencing options and the rationale for the selected sequence. Design features are also discussed and how they have evolved as more is learnt about the SHWL orebody. These include mass firing techniques, focusing on minimising ground vibrations, using seed wave form analysis and prediction. Rock mechanics issues will also be discussed, in particular the reinforcement of stope hanging walls and the use of instrumentation to monitor behaviour within the hanging wall.

Petroleum exploration in the Australian arid zone has been proceeding at an ever-increasing pace, subject to financial fluctuations, since the 1960's. The impacts of petroleum exploration in the arid zone are less than they would be for corresponding operations in. e.g. a forest area: in this context, Australia is fortunate in that its major petroleum producing (and prospective) , basins are offshore or in the arid zone. In addition. the other major sources of impact in the Austrlian arid zone, namely pastoralism, tourism, and rabbits, tend to be concentrated around areas of particular conservation significance, whereas petroleum exploration is not. Despite this, the cumulative impacts of exploration are sufficient to have caused concern to government regulatory authorities and some sectors of the general public. Exploration is now subject to a range of environmental constraints with various degrees of legal enforceability. To enable exploration to continue without public opposition, the industry, and government agencies charged with regulating or supervising it, must demonstrate that the net benefits of exploration exceed net costs, including environmental costs. One particularly simple and cost-effective technique for increasing the net benefit/cost ratio of exploration is to reduce the net environmental costs by minimising and mitigating the impacts, both primary and secondary, of seismic acqisition. This is best achieved by a combination of preventive and restorative techniques: careful line positioning and low-impact (or zero) line clearance, coupled with simple rehabilitation of bladed lines. Line clearance without bulldozer blading - e.g. by rolling or simply pegging and trafficking, perhaps with tracked rather than rubber-tyred vibroseis - is one promising approach currently coming into use. Rehabilitation by grading soil banks ("windrows") back on to bladed tracks, though not yet in widespread use, has proved very successful in the limited areas where it has been applied to date.

The need for quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) in the sampling and assaying of minerals is fundamental to the reliability and confidence of a mineral resource estimate, reserve estimate and possibly profitability of a mine. In spite of this, QA/QC practices in the mining industry are commonly applied poorly, or misunderstood. As New Leaders, we should aim to correct the poor practices and become fully informed on appropriate procedures. This paper uses worked examples that show the usefulness and importance of best practice QA/QC procedures. Fundamentals of reviewing the performance of the laboratory by examining the results of client inserted standard reference material (standards), blank material and duplicate samples are discussed. To do this, three examples from Australian data sets have been used. For each example, simple and efficient plotting techniques are suggested with subsequent evaluations of each plot. The first case study compares the results of internal standards from a laboratory with blind standards (where the expected value is unknown to the laboratory) submitted by the client. It was demonstrated over time that the laboratory was unintentionally analysing the internal standards in a different manner to the remainder of the sample batch. In this example, not understanding the cause of a high negative laboratory bias could have led to poor understanding of the depositÆs grade and in the extreme a proposed mining operation may have reached operational stage with a subeconomic grade. The second case study discusses the quality of blank material submitted by a mining operation to monitor cross-contamination within the laboratory. The blank material contained background levels of the element under investigation. This created uncertainty in the assay results, which could have led to the need for additional assays and drilling programs. Finally, the third case study demonstrates the use of the relative paired differences (RPD) technique to cross-validate the results from duplicates and repeat analyses from two laboratories. The three examples given show either laboratory or operational error. If left undetected, each example could have had serious implications for the mineral resource estimate and ultimately, the mining operation. These examples are not isolated occurrences; poor QA/QC practices are an industry wide problem exacerbated by rapid staff turnover and increased contractor positions on-site. New Leaders must be equipped with a thorough grounding in QA/QC best practices to improve its application and confidence in the results of sample analysis.

The key elements required to maintain final wall integrity and hence slope reliability are discussed. Failure modes and mechanisms in highly structured rock slopes are then reviewed. The impact of blast disturbance on rock masses in general is discussed and the relationships between the slope failure mode and blast disturbance is then explored. The question of how designers can incorporate such impacts into the slope design process is then addressed. This necessarily involves rock mass strength consideration and two case studies are used to demonstrate a recent dilemma in this regard. Some progress regarding this dilemma has also been reported for the second case study. The major conclusions are that: Slope reliability can be severely compromised if the slopes are damaged by blasting and this impact is not often incorporated into the slope design process. The location and extent of the blast damage will impact some slope failure geometries and failure mechanisms more than others. The concept of failure mechanism specific vulnerability needs to be further developed. The evidence indicates that this aspect is even more extreme for weak ground conditions. The quantification of the reduction in rock mass strength due to blast damage is not well understood and limitations exist with some recent guidelines. The use of the Hoek-Brown criterion for slopes in blocky rock masses requires considerable judgement. Further applied developments in this regard would be very beneficial to the industry. Some promising methods to incorporate blast damage estimates into the slope design process are emerging. It is good business to minimise final wall blast damage otherwise a whole range of issues relating to reduced slope reliability emerge.

Productivity of mines can be improved by taking fewer, but larger blasts. The initial blasts taken in starting a mining block are restricted by the low amount of void or space to fire into. Block cave mines are using a blasting technique to blast areas that have less than the normally accepted minimum void to establish drawbells for their orebody development. This technique used in block caving mines can be used to improve productivity in mining operations that utilise other mining methods. Some larger blasts have been done in mines, using open stoping methods, which have had void ratios as low as 13 per cent. This has been possible with the use of the explosive gases to transport the broken rock out of the area normally considered to be available to blasts. This trapping of the explosive gases in the broken rock has allowed rock to be moved over 30 m, horizontally, to allow for more void to be available in the blast area. This gives the necessary void ratio allowable to fire larger blasts. This paper will discuss the blasts where this technique has been used in mines to increase the tonnes fired in low void situations. It will also discuss where this type of blasting may improve the productivity of underground mines. Figure 1 shows the how explosive gases have enabled the broken rock to flow out of a draw point without the typical air blast and fly rock that would normally cause a rope suspended sign to be damaged beyond use.

A Feasibility Study was completed in late 2002 to ascertain the risk and reward profile from the proposed deepening of operations at Perseverance Nickel Mine in Western Australia. The system and approach adopted to this brownfields extension work is outlined and the main components of the study are overviewed. In particular, emphasis is given to the integration of mine design and scheduling tools through to financial evaluation. Detailed comment is given on the ability of the system used to provide a robust project schedule complete with 3D animation. The level of importance in eliminating scheduling errors is demonstrated in relation to the reported bottom line viability of the project. It is suggested that this is an area where brownfields Feasibility Studies have lacked clarity and authenticity, leading to the creation of an unrealistic benchmark for project implementation.

A numerical groundwater model was used to predict the nature of interactions between heavy mineral sands mining operations and the groundwater regime at North Stradbroke Island, Southeast Queensland. North Stradbroke Island is formed mainly of massive vegetated Cainozoic aged dune sands. Since the 1950s, a number of operations have mined rutile, zircon and ilmenite on North Stradbroke Island. In such mining operations, a dredge and an associated processing plant are floated in a pond either above or below the prime groundwater table The numerical model was based on the North Stradbroke Island Groundwater Management Model, developed in 2001 by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M). This model was constructed using the modular, cell-centred, finite-difference groundwater flow model, MODFLOW, developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The NR&M model was refined to improve model resolution and detail for simulating dredge mine paths. Of particular interest were: water table fluctuations induced by mining for the identification of slope stability risk; the optimisation of sand spear arrays supplying mine make-up water requirements; inflow and outflow rates to the dredge pond for overall mine water balance; and interactions with Eighteen Mile Swamp and water supply bores controlled by the Redland Shire Council (RSC). Depending on the water level in the dredge pond compared with the surrounding groundwater table, water either flows out of the dredge pond into the groundwater regime or from the groundwater system into the dredge pond. The MODFLOW river package (RIV) was utilised for the modelling study. Dredge pond movement was simulated using specialised software developed by Watermark Numerical Computing (WNC) to interpolate pond positions and map the dredge path to the model grid both spatially and temporally. As tailings placement affects the groundwater system through increased recharge, the MODFLOW recharge package (RCH) was utilised to simulate different recharge efficiencies. Long-term model predictions were made for the period from July 2002 to May 2021. Results of the modelling showed that exchanges of flow between mining operations and the groundwater regime could be effectively managed. The study provided valuable information which was used to develop an appropriate mine water management plan.

Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron. The integrated steel works is however under environmental pressure largely due to emissions from sintering and coking. The combustion of coke breeze during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and is the source of much of the emissions of SOx and NOx. Coke breeze, the fines produced during coking of coal, is also suffering supply issues as coke demand increases while coking capacity is constrained by environmental concerns.CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide can be sequestered into growing biomass prior to combustion. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource. Samples of pine wood flour, sawdust and red gum wood char were characterised and used in small-scale granulation and sintering tests. Red gum char granulated as well as coke and could be used to make acceptable sinter. Large-scale sinter pot test were conducted with char to produce sufficient sinter for ISO quality tests and calculate sintering performance parameters. Results showed that coke could be completely substituted by red gum char during sintering without loss of quality and with actual improvements in sintering performance. Furthermore, gas analyses made during sintering showed that there were significant reductions in SOx and NOx when char was substituted for coke. It is anticipated that the results reported here, although preliminary, will stimulate an increased effort into further research on the use of char in iron ore sintering.

In order to make good decisions, as to whether large diameter raise bored shafts can be constructed in blocky rock at a particular location, mine planners, management, geotechnical engineers and contractors must understand and consider a range of geotechnical issues. Firstly, mine management must ensure that adequate time and resources are available to find appropriate shaft sites. Deep weathering, adverse structures, groundwater, etc might mean that the most desirable location, with respect to other mine development, might not be suitable. Special site investigation drilling, etc may be necessary. Even then, alternative construction options might be necessary, other than just reaming through to the surface. A site investigation borehole should then be drilled to investigate specific and general ground conditions along the raise alignment. Often, only small sections of weak blocky rock dictate raise stability. While the empirical McCracken and Stacey method is typically used in Australia to assess raise stability and assess geotechnical risk, until recently it had no published performance data.An Australian database of raise performance now exists and is presented below, courtesy of an industry survey by the Eastern Australian Ground Control Group. Raise diameter and ground conditions (in terms of a lower bound Qr value) is presented for 50 cases versus raise performance.
