Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. In an effort to improve returns to shareholders, the Australian Mining Industry has consolidated considerably over the past decade or so. Technical services at mines have been re-structured, whilst those at corporate offices have been all but eliminated. A recent study of the role of the geologist in BM Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd (BMA), showed the adverse impact on the companyÆs performance due to a lack of geologists. With an education campaign, to demonstrate the contribution of geologists to the æbottom lineÆ and in increasing the options available to the company, the value of the geology role became better understood. The implications of the loss of invaluable corporate knowledge, when long serving geologists left the company, also became clear. Steps have since been taken to increase the numbers of company geologists, particularly on mine sites. In common with other sectors of the mining industry, the Australian coal industry is experiencing a critical shortage of experienced coal geologists, as companies have found in recent recruitment efforts. This is further evidence that the recommendations from the recent study by World Competitive Practices, commissioned by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, æRising to the ChallengeÆ have not been adopted. People, and the mineral resource base, are the assets from which mining companies gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Geologists, as the nexus between the resource base and people, are in a unique position to enhance the profitability of their companies. To maximise their contribution to the industry, and ensure that they receive due recognition, geologists must adopt a more commercial approach in their work and take a front foot stance in promoting their value to management. Geology is a core competency for all mining companies. The tendency for companies to outsource this function, to the detriment of the company geologist role, is not sustainable in the longer term. TodayÆs geologists need to work closely with management, technical and human resource professionals, universities and schools to ensure their significant value is well understood, and that the industry can attract, train and retain new recruits through the implementation of graduate programs and company career paths.

Structure is the most important control on the location of hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Unravelling the structural history of mineralised areas, however, is complex because the Province underwent three orogenic events, and three regional extension events followed the main episodes of compression. Steeply E to ENE dipping normal faults immediately predated deposition of the Beasley Quartzite of the lower Wyloo Group after the Ophthalmian Orogeny. Steeply NE and SW-S dipping normal faults predated deposition of the McGrath formation of the middle Wyloo Group, following the Panhandle Orogeny. The resulting interpreted rift was subsequently reactivated and tilted during the Capricorn Orogeny. Late NE trending normal faults are confined to the eastern half of the Province. High-grade hematite deposits occur in rocks that range from intensely folded (Mt Whaleback, Giles Mini) to rocks with less, or only little deformation (Paraburdoo, Channar), suggesting that folding had at best limited influence on ore genesis. In contrast, extensional normal faults are always associated with high-grade hematite deposits, and in particular faults that link the underlying dolomites of the Wittenoom Formation with the overlying iron formation, thus providing a pathway for mineralising alkaline fluids.

Many metallurgical operations produce fine residues and dusts as by-products which can be difficult to handle and offer little direct financial incentive to treat. There is a growing imperative to deal with these materials particularly since land fill is fast becoming an uncertain long term solution. One possible means of treatment is to extract the valuable metals while fusing the remainder into a slag. In this way valuable metal components of the material can be recovered and the less valuable components be converted into useful products, eg cements and inorganic polymers which have a high environmental stability and a growing market. The aim of this project is to establish solids injection and fusion in a slag bath as a viable method of treating industrial wastes and residues. The benefits of this approach are expected to be: the ability to treat a wide range of organic and inorganic residue materials, ease of recovery of volatile and valuable elements and the production of final materials which could be used in other industries. In ongoing experimental work at the CSIRO Minerals a 250 kg slag bath reactor has been used to test the injection of Paragoethite residue into an iron silicate based slag. An experimental apparatus has been designed and commissioned to pneumatically inject solid material at feed rates of up to 80 kg/hour. The capture efficiency of injected solids by the slag bath was calculated by monitoring the composition of the slag. Using this method of treatment, the zinc contained in the residue can be recovered as a fume by varying the oxidation state of the slag. Other valuable elements could be recovered by creating a matte or metal phase in the reactor with the final material being used in the production of cement. A capture efficiency of injected solid paragoethite particles in the slag bath of up to 97 per cent was achieved. Under the conditions of the experimental work capture efficiency was found to be independent of injection velocity and slag depth. The rate of fuming during injection was found to increase slightly with injection velocity and was independent of slag depth.

Over the last 20 years the mining industry has played a key role in the further development of many Central Queensland and New South Wales communities. The number of people who are employed by the coal mining industry, the number of transient residents, shift work and the town facilities have all contributed to how the community views the coal mining industry. As the coal mining boom continues and the mining communities continue to grow more emphasis is needed to address the community concerns, specifically the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the coal mining companies may have on these communities. Central Queensland coal mining operations are situated in the Bowen Basin. Many of the towns in the region have been developed specifically for the coal mining industry with 13 - 50 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) of people living in the communities being directly employed by the mines. The introduction of shift work, differing rosters and the mining boom have resulted in considerable changes to these communities with more transient contractors and permanent employees taking up residence outside of these communities. This change, however, has not been as noticeable in the Hunter Valley region. The Hunter Valley, situated in the Sydney Basin has two main mining towns, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Of the 37 173 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) people that reside in the communities 13.8 to 16.5 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) are employed directly by the mines. The Hunter Valley is a large tourist destination due to its many vineyards; this results in a diverse community where mining is not the sole means of employment. Similar to Central Queensland the mining boom has brought more people to the Hunter Valley region, although greater percentages have taken up residence in the communities. The views vary between the two regions on the coal mining industry, specifically on the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the industry may have on the surrounding communities.

For many years explosive sensitized explosives were assessed using the ballistic mortar. The standard test used lOg of explo- sive initiated with a detonator. Over the past 30 years many non- explosive sensitized explosives and blasting agents have been developed. Most of these new explosives and blasting agents cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar as they are not initiated by a detonator. It is also known that all explosives have a criti- cal diameter. When the cartridge diameter is less than the criti- cal diameter a stable detonation cannot be produced and the explosive fails to propagate. For many blasting agents the criti- cal diameters are greater than 50mm and such large diameters cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar. The underwater test allows explosives to be tested in diameters greater than the critical diameter and to be adequately initiated with suitable boosters. The effects of the explosive on the water are easy to measure and the test provides a safe, convenient and reproducible means of assessing explosive performance. The reaction products are allowed to expand to a low final pressure. The underwater test can therefore be used to give a measure of the total expansion work of explosives. The detonation of an explosive induces a shock wave in the surrounding water. The profile of the shock wave can be meas- ured 3-6m from the charge and the energy in the shock wave cal- culated. Measurements over a range of distances show that the shock wave is attenuated as it travels through the water and the attenuation is different for each explosive. This makes it difficult to estimate the energy dissipated in the water between the charge and a single gauge. The reaction products continue to expand and displace water. The bubble continues to expand until the kinetic energy of the water is zero. The gas pressure in the bubble is now lower than the hydrostatic pressure and the bubble radius is a maximum. The higher external hyrdostatic pressure causes the bubble to implode. The bubble energy is the work done displacing the maxi- mum bubble volume against the hydrostatic pressure and can befound from the bubble period. It is not always easy to find a large enough pond for the bubble to expand undisturbed by the water surface and the containing boundaries. This makes it difficult to determine the bubble energy accurately in shallow Ponds.

This paper is for mine managers. It is about maintenance of mining equipment. This is an extremely broad subject so this paper is given with the caveat that it necessarily contains generalisations, not true in all cases, but broadly correct. The job of mine managers is to be good at making money from the excavation and preliminary treatment of mineral. To do this well, they need to understand the cost and value drivers in the business. This includes understanding the drivers associated with maintenance. Maintenance is often identified as a problem at mine sites. It is frequently listed as the cause of production shortfalls when reporting. The state of maintenance within mining as an industry is generally among the lower end of the range, when compared to manufacturing, petrochemicals, etc. Why is this? Experience and review of many audits and evaluations of maintenance has shown that some patterns are consistent with good performance and some consistent with poor performance. These often centre around the time horizon of the management team and are associated with knowing the sensitivity of the business to certain maintenance drivers and the mechanisms of maintenance and their results. To summarise, some common misunderstandings can be listed as statements that are obvious and extrapolations from those, which are not necessarily correct. For example: High availability of equipment is necessary for production. Incorrect extrapolation:focus on availability will produce high production. Design is often the greatest factor in determining the reliability of a mining machine. Incorrect extrapolation: the newest and biggest machines generally have the lowest cost operations. Operation has an enormous impact on machine productivity and reliability. Incorrect extrapolation: the fastest operators are generally the best from a productive point of view. Some maintenance improves the performance and reliability of machines. Incorrect extrapolation: more maintenance will give you more reliability. Some maintenance depends on disassembly and reassembly of components. Incorrect extrapolation: assembly is basically the reverse process of disassembly. Maintenance improvement in the mining industry in the last 15 years has focused largely on planning and systems improvement. Incorrect extrapolation: most of the problems in maintenance can be traced to a lack of planning. Actions based on flawed extrapolations will steer a business suboptimally. It is therefore important that the mine manager understands these issues so that the improvement effort can be directed to the greatest benefit.

The Kalahari Manganese Deposit in South Africa accounts for 80 per cent of the worldÆs land-based mineable Mn reserves. Although the ores are primarily mined for export, South Africa is the worldÆs third largest producer of ferromanganese and ferrosilicomanganese alloy, both of which are derived from the smelting of these ores. Mineralogical analysis has traditionally been forsaken for bulk chemical assaying in quality control of smelter feeds, principally because quantitative data could not be easily produced. Yet, mineralogy plays a vital role in determining smelting behaviour, which in turn has economic implications when aspects such as energy and reductant consumption are considered. Smelting is an endothermic process, and the amount of energy input required is dependent on the minerals present in the ore, as well as their relative proportions. Further, knowing the bulk Mn oxidation state in the ores allows for calculation of the amount of oxygen that must be driven off to produce alloy, and hence the amount of reductant required. Additionally, certain minerals can be correlated with potentially deleterious elements, so that ore mineralogy can indicate penalty element distribution. Mineral abundance analysis was conducted on ores from the Kalahari Manganese Deposit using quantitative X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement using a fundamental parameters approach was applied to micronised ore samples. The mineral percentages obtained were validated using mineral chemical data together with bulk major element data derived from ICP-OES. Bulk oxidation state partitioning was then carried out knowing the Mn valence in the minerals. The results show potential for implementation of the proposed method on a smelting plant, where ore blending could be then implemented to achieve consistent feed compositions to smelters. Selective mining could also be undertaken to obtain desirable ore compositions for domestic or international markets.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specific engineering design criteria, which fully details the proposed method of exploitation. These criteria have not in general been taken into serious consideration when leaseholders have reported reserves in the past. In fact, many "reserve" figures quoted are probably more correctly classified as geological resources. The industry now recognises that it is necessary to take into consideration not only grade and mill recovery factors, but also likely mining and processing costs as well as the current market price for the commodity. Once having estimated those costs which are applicable to the resource under study, they can be deducted from the gross inherent worth of the orebody to result in an estimate of the potential net revenue. Through a process of interactive trial mine designs and evaluation, reserves can be quantified to provide an estimate of the available recoverable economic reserves given a set of assumed cost and operational parameters. It follows then, that the available economic reserve recoverable from a given resource will vary from time-to-time as cost and price factors vary in response to changing technology and economic factors. A methodology is described which may be used to derive economic recoverable reserves based on a computerised model of the geological resource data and appropriate economic and operational cost algorithms. Examples are provided from both coal and gold studies to illustrate the impact of economic criteria on the magnitude of the reserve figure reported for each project.

The beneficiation potentials of two Indian iron ore slime samples by flotation technique using both cationic and anionic collectors are investigated. The direct and reverse flotation of slimes using oleic acid and dodecylamine as the collector have been studied using both conventional cell and flotation column to upgrade the iron content. The characterisation studies of iron ore slimes indicated that the samples are extremely fine in nature and contain substantial amounts of martite, magnetite, goethite, limonite, kaolinite and quartz beside hematite as the dominant iron mineral phase. The samples on average contain around 52 - 58 per cent Fe, four to seven per cent SiO2 and five to six per cent Al2O3. Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the slimes, it is attributed that both the samples need to be deslimed by hydrocyclone before flotation. The results of both cell and column studies on sample I showed that a feed containing 57.5 per cent Fe could be upgraded to 65.5 per cent Fe at 50 per cent overall recovery with simultaneous decrease in SiO2 and Al2O3 content to 2.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively by using oleic acid as the collector. In the case of sample II, it has been established that reverse flotation of silica is the better technique to improve both the grade and recovery of iron. Batch flotation studies in cell indicated that a product with 63.1 per cent Fe could be obtained at 40.0 per cent yield with 63.6 per cent iron recovery by the combination of reagents such as gum acacia, sodium hexa meta phosphate and dodecylamine. The performance of column flotation techniques is far superior to that of the cell with respect to both grade and recovery. The concentrates are found to be quite suitable for commercial exploitation as pellet feed.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

The presence of clays, in particular clay slime, may complicate many mining operations. Clay slime particles may possess a negative or positive charge depending upon the pH in the process and their presence may lead to reduced recoveries in flotation processes. It is assumed that slime particles may adsorb onto the surfaces of the minerals to be floated and by doing so, reducing the efficacy of the flotation chemicals. In this work it is shown that addition of a small amount of dispersant, either a polyacrylic acid or an anionic polyphenolic polymer, increases the recovery of copper and gold, both in laboratory trials and in plant testing of an ore with high clay content. Measurements of adsorption isotherms reveal that the tested dispersants show preferential adsorption towards the clay minerals present, suggesting that the improved recovery upon dispersant addition occurs by prevention of attachment of clay slime particles onto primarily chalcocite but also chalcopyrite.CITATION:Seaman, D R, Lauten, R A, Kluck, G and Stoitis, N, 2012. A low grade, refractory ore gold mine with high striping ratio such as at Macraes is always challenged in ways to improve margins. Common practice approaches used at OceanaGold Ltd Macraes are to maximise grade delivery, optimise recovery and reduce unit costs, as well as take any opportunities to incorporate new technologies and implement enhanced commercial strategies.   The Business Improvement (BI) programme was implemented across the Macraes operations in late 2003 and is being rolled-out to all other parts of the business. The core focus of BI at OGL is to: +        increase revenue, +        reduce cost, and +        improve processes.   A dedicated BI team comprising of a manager, team leaders and business analysts were engaged to identify and manage a series of opportunities to reduce operating expenses, optimise capital outlays and generate extra revenue. The Business Improvement Programme, though in its formative phase, has begun a cultural change within the organisation. Many people are starting to challenge the way they do things and are looking for ways to continually improve business performance.   The BI team encompasses individuals from different departments who can offer the diverse skill set necessary to produce intended results. The current team is made up of a BI manager, BI Team Leaders in Mining and Processing and analysts from Mining, Processing, Commercial and Plant Maintenance workgroups. A team member has recently been formally trained as a Six Sigma Black Belt. ] The BIÆs team role is to assist in the establishment of project management processes for each improvement idea. In addition the team will assist in tracking implementation, identifying and unblocking restrictions and limitations as well as setting up metrics to quantify the level of benefit returned and sustained.   From a more strategic point of view, the BI team is advancing the Business Improvement capability of the company by developing long term Communication and Training strategies. These strategies will set the direction of BI initiatives in the years to come to: +        educate the OGL workforce in basic BI techniques, +        assist the OGL workforce in applying basic BI techniques, +        communication the direction of BI in OGL, and +        close the information feedback loop to facilitate transparent communication between the OGL workforce and the BI team.

In recent years a large amount of work has been done at various plants overseas, and also at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Port Pirie, South Australia, on the use of Dwight Lloyd sintering plant gases for sulphuric acid manufacture by the contact process.Several plants have modified their sintering machines and operating procedure, and some have adopted gas recirculation techniques, to obtain a relatively high proportion of the sintering plant gas at an S02 concentration acceptable to a contact acid plant 1.These adaptations were investigated at Port Pirie, and it was found that gases of suitable S02 concentration could be obtained. The results justified installation of a contact acid plant and a decision was accordingly made in 1949 to construct such a plant.However, the local conditions presented some difficulties not generally encountered at other plants, the chief differences being:a. For maintenance of production of 98% H2S04 , an unusually high S02 concentration is required, because of the prevailing high temperature 'of the purification train cooling water.b. The entire sintering operation is conducted on two large machines, 55ft. x 10ft., operating in series as "First" and "Second over" machines (a two-pass roast.) Any interruption" to either machine causes a complete interruption of plant operation and gas flow.

The goal of this study is to characterise co-processed clinkers by identifying the most common minor elements, their distribution in the clinkers and possible effects on the mineralogical properties of the same. The results show the presence of an elevated content of transition metals, especially manganese concentrated in the matrix (up to three per cent) of the clinkers. Anomalous concentrations of arsenic have also been detected, especially at silicate crystal edges. The results indicate that the tracer elements can perfectly be associated to the mineralogical characteristics of the clinkers.

A formalised approach to risk management has been regulated in the United Kingdom (UK) since the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) came into force in 1995. These regulations have recently been revised in 2007. In response to a series of significant claims around the world the UK insurance industry published a code of practice for risk management of tunnels in 2003, and that was followed by an international version in 2006. Probably one of the main contributions of this new approach is the recognition that health and safety risks can best be addressed early in the process, initially by the owner and then by the designers. One of the aims is to achieve elimination of risks by good design. The advantage of a risk-based approach to tunnel design is that all risks are considered explicitly, and any residual risks in the design are communicated clearly to the construction team. This paper looks at the implementation of this formalised approach to risk management with reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. The design has been undertaken in accordance with the requirements of the CDM regulations, and also in compliance with the Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works in the UK. An outline of the risk-based design process used is provided, including examples.

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

Reliable sampling practices are the key to optimising the market value of a mining or chemical companyÆs stock. As a result, reliable sampling standards are needed. However, current standards on sampling present the æuniversalÆ Pierre GyÆs Sampling Theory in an ambiguous way. For example, the Total Sampling Error is divided into its basic components only in informative annexes, when it should clearly be the main body of the standard. Sampling standards are presently loaded with statistical concepts that actually belong in the annexes. Furthermore, many non-probabilistic sampling procedures are still mentioned which do not belong in a standard. The objective is not to criticise existing sampling standards, but to suggest better ones. Sections on the Sampling Theory should divide the Total Sampling Error into a sum of its nine basic components. Then, and only then, should they be addressed one at the time. Sections for establishing a sampling protocol should address the in situ Nugget Effect, the Fundamental Error, the Grouping and Segregation Error, the Long Range Quality Fluctuation Error, and the Periodic Quality Fluctuation Error. Sections for sampling methods, mechanical sampling, manual sampling, grab sampling, sampling of trucks, railroad cars, bags, and drums should be part of the critically important practical implementation of a recommended sampling protocol, called Sampling Correctness. It includes the increment Delimitation Error, the increment Extraction Error, the Weighting Error, and the Preparation Errors. Unless these errors are addressed one at a time, in an unambiguous way, the standard will remain ineffective in solving sampling problems for the industry. Therefore, a strategy is needed to create better standards required at the early stages of new projects, both by manufacturers of sampling equipment and by engineering firms. A logical sequence of important points that cannot be ignored in any sampling standard is presented. An analysis of the practical use of the words sampling uncertainty versus sampling error is recalled. Finally, as a practical example, an in-depth analysis of the correctness of cross-belt samplers is presented, and emphasis is placed on the correct ways to perform bias-tests for mechanical sampling systems.

Mineral processing is an essential component of a mine production chain and it accounts for significant proportion of the production cost. Over the past decade, significant research progress has been made in processing plant efficiency using theoretical, experimental and simulation modelling techniques. However, these studies are limited to process plant system as stand-alone units with no interactions with the mining units. In order to maximise the total mining system efficiency and more accurately simulate the system, the processing plant must be modelled as part of an integrated mining system. This becomes increasingly important in continuous surface mining systems, with limited ore processing capacity. In addition, plant efficiency is roughly estimated with known parameters or with simplistic statistical data, without regards to the stochastic processes governing these parameters, such as processing plant feed introduction. In this paper, a comprehensive model of the ore processing plant system is given and the object-oriented design (OOD) of the system is briefly introduced. The joint operation of ore processing plant system and haulage system is analysed. Numerical modelling is used to analyse the ore processing plant system under different conditions. Analysis of the results show that the optimum plant capacity is 0.7 tons/sec (2520 tons/hour). The results also show that the plant system resources cannot be fully utilised because the production rate is always less than the plant capacity. When plant capacity reaches an optimum value 0.7 tons/sec, the production rate is about 0.64 tons/sec. The underlying stochastic processes associated with plant and mine capacities cause this variability. In order to reduce this variability, there is the need to tightly set tolerances for the function variables.

This paper summarises the performance of the gold exploration industry in the Western World since 1970, with particular emphasis on the period 1985 - 2003. It identifies the number and size of major (ie >1 million ounce) primary gold discoveries made over this period by location and type of company. Estimates are also made of the likely contribution from smaller discoveries down to 0.1 million ounces. It also assesses the overall trend in the percentage of grassroot discoveries that are converted into mines, and the time taken to get them into production. By comparing the discovery data against total exploration expenditures it is possible to determine the average unit cost of finding a major gold deposit. It is significant to note that the average unit cost per discovery and per ounce of resource has tripled over the last 30 years. An attempt is made to determine the overall economic value generated by the industry. This is based on a detailed analysis of the rates of return and the Net Present Values (NPVs) of 109 major gold projects. After including an adjustment for discoveries not modelled, the NPVs are compared against the total amount of money spent on exploration to determine the value-to-cost ratio for the industry. Based on historical spot gold prices and tax rules, it is found that the return on investment for gold exploration in the Western World over the period 1985 - 2003 was around five per cent real after-tax. The returns achieved in the US and Australia was significantly higher than that for Canada. The returns also appear to have declined in recent years. With regard to the relative performance of junior versus major companies, the paper estimates that the junior sector accounted for 30 - 40 per cent of the total exploration expenditure, and were was associated with 34 per cent of the total number of major deposits, 27 per cent of the contained ounces and 25 per cent of the economic value found.
