International trade in minerals plays a very important role in the economic growth of many nations. Several less developed countries a1•e heavily dependent on their mineral exports for earning foreign exchange, which is needed for industrialization. Mineral exporting nations experience many problems in international mineral markets; the most important are tariff barriers, deteriorating terms of trade, instability in metal prices, etc. The formation of international mineral cartels to raise prices can be successful only to a limited extent and only for a short period of time.

"As mining has evolved over a century, so are the challenges associated with mining. Mining of complex ore bodies at greater depths is a major challenge requiring high capital and operating costs due to remote locations, high energy costs, water quality and complex environmental issues. In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. "IntroductionTHE OPINION is held by many persons outside the mining industry, and by some within it, that mine •operators customarily find it advantageous to mine •only the richer parts of orebodies and to leave behind, perhaps permanently, leaner material which could be mined only at a lesser profit. This opinion and the inference which might be drawn from it that 'gutting' of mineral resources is a common feruture• of the mining industry are prejudicial to the intertsts of the industry and deserve careful scrutiny. Oddly enough, a theory of mine economics which gives much support for the opinion was advanced first by members of the mining profession itself, has been repeated •several times in mining literature, and to my knowledge has never been adequately refoted.According to the theory, selective mining of the rich ore first on a large scale will yield substantial gains and these gains do not merely reflect the desire of 'money minded investors' for a quick return but derive from the logical application of compound interest rates and the concept of ;present value. W. O. Hotchkiss and R. D. Parks (1) illustrate the reasoning with a hypothetical example in which an orebody of 4,000,000 tons may be mined either in its entirety in forty years at $1.00 per ton profit or selectively with the recovery of only the richest half in twenty years at $1.50 per ton profit. They show that, with Hoskold rates of 4 and 8 per cent, the present value of profits from mining only the richer 2,000,000 tons exceeds the present value of profits :from mining the whole orebody by about 20 per cent."

"I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. Every year the conventional direct reduction processes ? Midrex and HYL III ? increased their market share in the world steel production, even though they are only economically feasible in countries where natural gas is available at competitive prices. In this context, the new Midrex projects are based on large reactors (Megamod - 1.5 to 1.8 Mt/y of DRI), reduction temperatures of the metallic burden up to 850oC, with bustle gas temperatures between 960oC e 1050oC. Thus, the requirements of metallic burden performance, as well as the evaluating methods, usually based on ISO standards, need to be reviewed. It is well known that the standards usually applied to quality evaluation do not reflect the performance of metallic burden inside the reactors. This paper describes the different methods of evaluating the disintegration under reduction of DR pellets based on ISO 11257 standard. This is the most important method used by pellet producers and customers for evaluating DR feedstocks. The different methodologies tested to evaluate the disintegration under reduction had varying results, evidencing the relevance of the method and the quality of the pellet. Nevertheless, validating the method in an industrial reactor is still fundamental.

This paper summarizes the present state of understanding the regional geology, structural setting, zoning, mineralogy and geochemistry of the pegmatite, and the mining and ore-processing methods used in its exploitation.

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. Wrought extra-high tensile alloys series 7??? based on the system Al-Zn-Mg-Cu are well studied."

Descriptions of typical pulp and paper manufacturing processes are presented, with particular emphasis on the use of minerals and derived products. Some consideration is given to the future demand for these minerals by the pulp and paper industry. Possible influences of techno-logical change and social legislation are suggested and their effect on saltcake demand by the pulp industry is discussed. Predictions are made regarding trends for new and existing paper products.

It has already become in most countries a capital intensive industry and its problems, scientific, technical and economic, are growing in difficulty."""

"International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada's R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

Individual mineral cyclone performance curves were determined for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators. Sizing was by screen and cyclosizer down to approximately 10 um, with lead , zinc and iron as saying of each size fraction. The performance curves were similar in shape and located according to the mineral specific gravity, Pm. The curves displayed a discontinuity at the fine end and a magnitude of short-circuiting of fines to the underflow which increased with Pm. Mass fraction of water to the underflow was only a guide to this short-circuiting. Sharpness of separation seemed in dependent of Pm. An inflection in the over-all performance curve was shown to be a consequence of the individual component mineral performance. A general relationship was observed showing that the flow regime of classification changed from laminar/ intermediate to turbulent with increasing cyclone feed size. Individual mineral size reduction for the four major minerals at one of the concentrators was also determined. Size reduction of the silica was greater than that of the galena, in contradiction to their accepted relative grind-ability. The observation did correlate with silica being much coarser than the galena in the feed to the ball mill. It is suggested that the silica acted as a buffer to the galena.

"Most of the minerals employed in Canadian refractory production are imported; in fact, most of the refractories consumed in Canada are imported. Whereas this situation is partly due to a definite shortage of suitable raw materials, e.g., fire clays, it is possible that the potential of certain mineral deposits which could be usefully exploited has not been recognized. There are exceptions, notably magnesite and dolomite, from which refractories are produced in Canada.In many cases, known mineral deposits are located either in inaccessible areas or in areas where transportation would be a major economic factor. This paper lists some minerals and their respective known deposits which could be employed in the production of refractories, irrespective of economics."

Introduction Mining of the orebody of the Sullivan mine, which is owned and operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, has reached a point where pillar extraction is rapidly becoming a major part of the operation. Very few of the larger pillars have been completely extracted; consequently, this paper contains much that is theory and expectation. Due to early mining methods and the physical characteristics of the Sullivan deposit, similar conditions may not exist in other older mines facing the problems of pillar extraction, but it is thought that the methods employed and those contemplated may be of general interest. History The Sullivan orebody, which is at Kimberley in the Fort Steele mining division of the East Kootenay district of British Columbia, was discovered in May, 1892, by Messrs. Sullivan, Smith, Cleaver, and Burchett. After passing through the hands of several owners the property was optioned in 1909, and purchased in 1910, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Early mining was highly selective, the objective being a clean, high-grade silver-lead ore. By 1923 the difficulties of milling the very complex ore had been overcome and the first unit of a concentrator was completed with a capacity of 2,500 tons daily. Capacity was increased by stages to the present rate of 8,500 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped over the Canadian Pacific railway ? to the Company smelter at Tadanac, British Columbia, for final treatment. Approximately 45,000,000 tons of ore has been mined to date.

BEFORE discussing some of the technical aspects of the steam generating plants of Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, it might be of interest to go back through history and see the development of steam generation in this public utility. Back around 1902 Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, had three slide-valve engines in-stalled at its Water Street, Halifax, generating station for a total capacity of 1,800 kilowatts. The plant remained at about this size until 1910 and in 1911 a 2,000 kilowatt steam turbine was installed to raise the total capacity of the plant to 3,800 kilowatts. In 1916, a 3,000 kilowatt turbine was installed and one of the slide-valve engines was removed to make a total plant capacity of 6,200 kilowatts. The total demand in the Company's service 8rea was at that time 4,000 kilo-watts.

"The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."

"Most FeNi furnaces used to rely on post-combustion and off-gas cooling inside the furnace to eliminate the produced CO gas, and control the off gas temperature. As furnace load, capacity, and thus gas volumes increased over the years, this led to increased instabilities that can cause problems in controlling the operation. Some of the large capacity furnaces nowadays work with partial or full combustion outside the furnace, more similar to the steel industry. Forced combustion with or without enriched air and other additions can support in controlling post-combustion, stabilizing and even reducing off gas amounts, and affecting composition. This paper presents some of the possibilities and advantages of having a specially designed post-combustion system for the FeNi laterite industry, but that could also be applied to other processes as well.Large Scale Furnaces In the FeNi industry, the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process is still going strong in spite of continuous hope that hydrometallurgical processes will one day make the RKEF plant obsolete. Within the pyrometallurgical plants there is a continuous trend for larger scale furnaces. The development for a number of furnaces that were started before 1985 and increased capacity by “natural growth” is given in Figure 1. Natural growth refers to the development of the plants that after having mastered a certain level of operation, were ready for a higher load that could be installed either with a new furnace on the same site, or during a revamp. The advantages of natural growth are numerous, for example: •,Deep knowledge of the ore and its’ behavior, no need for testing, and little risk of surprises. •,Mining, laboratory, equipment, etc. is all proven technology for the conditions on site. •,Starting a furnace with increased capacity is a re-start, not a green-field commissioning. •,Typically, when increasing the production capacity of an existing plant, not the entire plant is commissioned for the first time, but only a part. In the FeNi laterite industry for example, the kilns may already have had the capacity to provide enough material."

Methane (CH4) present in coal seams, generally known as Coalbed Methane (CBM), Coal Mine Methane (CMM) or Coal Seam Gas (CSG), is a major energy source, as it is the primary constituent of natural gas. At the same time, released methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and a major safety hazard in underground mining operations. Therefore, a considerable effort has been undertaken to develop coal bed methane extraction and utilization technologies that can achieve both environmental and safety benefits. Countries with significant coal reserves and gassy seams, i.e., USA, Australia, Canada, China, India, Poland and Germany have developed mature methodologies and practices to extract, before and during mining, and utilize significant amounts of methane from coal seams. Nevertheless, on a global scale, methane recovery remains untested and many technical and economic challenges require urgent attention. The research presented in this paper, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is focused on the Zonguldak Basin, the only hard coal region in Turkey. The basin is known to contain very gassy coal seams and consists of three major regions: Armutcuk, Zonguldak and Amasra. Among the three, the Amasra coalfield is considered as the most favorable for CBM recovery, as it comprises of deeper coal seams and where a private company, Hema Enerji A.S. (Hema) is already developing coalbed methane production facilities. This study aims at developing a reservoir model to predict the potential CBM recovery from the CBM-2 well, the only producing CBM well drilled by HEMA Enerji A.S in the Amasra coalfield. History matching was utilized to model the 15-day production data and uncertainty analysis was performed to estimate the optimum values for the reservoir parameters. The produced model yielded an average production rate of 143 m3/day for 10 years. The total amount of CH4 to be produced during this period was 0.53 million m3. Furthermore, the total amount of GHG to be avoided was estimated at 6585 tCO2e.

Introduction During the past three years at least fifty strings of 9% nickel steel tubing have exhibited excellent resistance .to the variably severe corrosive conditions typical of many of the sweet condensate wells in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. This experience, and the characteristically outstanding performance of other ?nickel alloy steels under hydrogen sulphide corrosive conditions, dictated the selection of 9% nickel steel tubing for the second well drilled in the sour condensate Pincher Creek field of southwestern Alberta. The damaging effects of the Pincher Creek reservoir fluids on well equipment had been manifested in the discovery well by the rapid and not yet fully understood failure of API Grade N-80 tubing, stainless steel wire lines, and alloy steel fishing tools. Two very unexpected failures in the 9% nickel steel tubing, after only six days of service in production tests, instigated an extensive and continuing investigation to ascertain the probable cause of failure. This discussion presents some of the results obtained thus far which cast a little light on the perplexing behaviour of steels in hydrogen sulphide environments in general, and in sour condensate wells in particular. History of Tubing Failures Walter Marr well No. 1, in which the 9% nickel steel tubing failures occurred, produces from the Madison lime at the depth interval approximately 12,200 to 12,750 feet. The gas-oil ratio is about 26,000 and the gas contains 10.2 per cent hydrogen sulphide and 6.3 per cent carbon dioxide by volume.

"DEVELOPMENT of the underground mine is carried out from a main ramp driven from surface to the 800 and 1200 levels and from a shaft sunk to 3050 ft. Sub-levels at approximately 100-ft vertical intervals, starting 300 ft above the 800 level, were collared from the ramp as it advanced and a considerable amount of development work was pursued. The lateral and ramp work provided an opportunity to train drift crews, test equipment and methods, assess ground conditions and advance the initial stope development. The development of an exhaust ventilation raise system closely followed the extension of the level development to the south end of the orebody (Fig. 26) . On completion of the shaft, temporary lip pockets were installed at the shaft stations on the 800, 12.00, 1600, 2000 and 2400 levels. The permanent loading pocket had been installed on the 2860 level as part of the shaft-sinking contract and the level had been connected to the 2800-level station by a small muck transfer raise. Development of the 2800-level area was given top priority at this stage. This included a 1000-ft cross-cut to the crusher location, the crusher excavation, storage bins, conveyor ways and a ramp to connect the 2800 level to the loading pocket, the rope changing station and the shaft sump. The development and installation of the rock handling system between the 2400 level and the shaft bottom was contracted to Macisaac Mining and Tunnelling Company, of Sudbury, Ontario."
