"In order to avoid pollution of water in Flemming Brook and Little River, which drain the area in which the Brunswick No. 12 Mine and Concentrator are located, the company has gone to considerable expense in preparing tailings storage and effluent setting ponds. The attached drawing gives a plan of the six settling ponds together with elevations of the dikes and the effluent weirs.All original dikes for the six ponds were constructed from humus-free clay and rock material, which was obtained, preferentially, by excavating from within the dike area. Run-off water, precipitated on the outside slopes of the dams will drain off without contacting the tailing material. A ditch was made north of the dam site to deflect surface run-off to the east into a branch of Flemming Brook.A secondary dike, made from tailings, has recently been erected on No. 1 and No. 2 tailings pond inside and above the earth-filled dike which serves as a roadway. Run-off from the tailings dikes will be retained inside the ponds by ditching between the roadway and tailings dike into ponds 4 and 6."

The effects of various mechanisation and process changes can be rapidly modelled and compared.This technology will provide mill maintenance managers and contract relining companies with the opportunity to benchmark current performance against world’s best practice. It will also provide an opportunity for concentrator plant designers and mill manufacturers to plan for maximum plant efficiency, by designing an infrastructure and equipment combination that maximises annual plant availability.This simulation tool and its associated data set, has been developed using recent grinding mill performance data from mills of varying dimensions, liner configurations, mill relining equipment, operator and tool variables.The simulation will provide an output that the various stakeholders can utilise to make optimal decisions within the given financial, physical and technological constraints of the individual concentrator plant."

"The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth—including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling, and anode passivation.RÉSUMÉ La toxicité de l’arsenic est bien connue et documentée; toutefois, la présence d’arsenic dans les anodes de l’électroaffinage du cuivre et dans les électrolytes est d’une nécessité critique pour produire une cathode de grande qualité. Les concentrations en arsenic, ainsi qu’en antimoine et en bismuth varient selon leur concentration dans l’anode de cuivre reçue de la fonderie. Le comportement et les avantages de l’arsenic dans l’électroaffinage du cuivre et les effets indésirables de l’antimoine et du bismuth sur la qualité de la cathode et le rendement des cuves d’électrolyse sont discutés. "The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence in western New Brunswick is hosted in the Poplar Mountain volcanic complex (PMVC), which is located along the southern segment of the regional Woodstock fault zone. The PMVC consists of three principal units including, in ascending order, a porphyritic felsic volcanic unit, a volcaniclastic unit, and a mafic volcanic unit. U-Pb dating of zircon indicates that the age of the volcanic rocks is younger than 459 ± 3 Ma, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mineralization-associated sericite indicates that the age of mineralization is 411 ± 3.7 Ma. Gold-mineralized zones occur in all the lithologic units but mainly in the porphyritic felsic volcanic unit. Gold zones are not controlled by individual faults but are characterized by high-density brittle fracturing, thin carbonate-quartz veining, and intensive ankerite-sericite alteration, superimposed on an earlier chlorite-calcite- quartz alteration. Gold is associated with arsenopyrite, which mostly occurs as disseminations in the host rocks, and to a lesser extent with quartz-carbonate-sericite veins and quartz-cemented breccias.Geochemical data indicate that mineralization-associated alteration is characterized by enrichment of K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba, As, Sb, W, C, and S. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the mineralizing fluids are composed of H2O, salts, and CO2 with variable amounts of N2 and CH4; salinities range from 2.3 to 10.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, but mainly from 2.3 to 5.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, and homogenization temperatures lie mainly between 220° and 270°C. Fluid pressures at the site of mineralization are estimated to have been 770 to 1200 bars, corresponding to a depth of 2.9 to 4.6 km at lithostatic pressure. The d18OSMOW and d13CPDB values of mineralization-related ankerite range from +14.5‰ to +16.5‰, and -6.8‰ to -8.3‰, respectively. The d18O values of the ore-forming fluids are estimated to be 6.4‰ to 8.3‰ at a temperature of 250°C. These carbon and oxygen isotope data fall in the field of magmatic fluids and in part the field of metamorphic fluids.Considering the geological setting of the region, abundant granitic intrusions, the similarity between the age of mineralization (411 ± 3.7 Ma) and the nearby Pokiok batholith (402-415 Ma), and the enrichment of granophile elements in mineralization-related alteration, the ore-forming fluids were probably derived from a granitic intrusion underneath the PMVC. These fluids were focused along structures related to the Woodstock fault. The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence might be compared to some granitic intrusion-related gold systems based on the geochemical data presented herein. L’indice aurifère de Poplar Mountain dans l’ouest du Nouveau Brunswick est contenu dans le complexe volcanique de Poplar Mountain (CVPM), lequel est situé le long du segment sud de la zone de faille régionale de Woodstock. Les trois unités principales du CVPM sont, de la base au sommet, une unité volcanique felsique porphyrique, une unité volcaniclastique et une unité volcanique mafique. La datation U-Pb de zircons indique que les roches volcaniques sont plus jeunes que 459 ± 3 Ma, et la datation par la méthode 40Ar/39Ar de séricite associée à la minéralisation assigne à la minéralisation un age de 411 ± 3.7 Ma. "Resin-anchored rebar is commonly used for rock support in mining. The rock properties and environment determine the average bond strength, allowing mine engineers to select the appropriate length and installation pattern for the support. In weak material such as potash, the average bond strength tends to be lower than for a typical hard-rock installation. Determining the failure mechanism by which the support fails in soft-rock applications could lead to improved bond strength and better calculated installed support capacity. This paper reports on research conducted at a potash mine in Saskatchewan and analyzes the failure mechanism of the support.RÉSUMÉ Dans les mines, les barres d’armature enduites de résine sont fréquemment utilisées pour soutenir le roc. L’environnement et les propriétés du roc déterminent la résistance moyenne d’adhésion, permettant ainsi aux ingénieurs miniers de choisir la longueur de barre appropriée et le diagramme d’installation du soutien. ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test procedure at McGill University is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill University has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GRG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. As a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GRG tests were carried out at McGill University on ores from all over the world. Recently, a modi?ed version of the GRG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GRG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has the advantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. To recognize and honour the contributions made by the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GRG test be named after Laplante.

"The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China. The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture rone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrurn in stage I and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to rone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."

Edging for starter sheet blanks used in conventional copper refineries has always been problematic for getting the edging to seal and adhere to the titanium material used for the blank so that copper is prevented from plating under the edging and cause undo problems in getting the copper sheets to separate from the blanks. A method was developed at the Amarillo Copper Refinery utilizing an injection molding process that better adheres the edging material to the titanium that makes the harvesting of starter sheets much easier to the point that robots are now used to strip with and which holds up very well to the unforgiving physical nature of the electroplating process. It is believed that this technology could be successfully utilized for permanent cathodes as well. INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting and Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co- products (Marcosson, 1949). Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills and two solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants all in Arizona plus a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas. Figure 1 illustrates how the copper metal comes out of the ground at the mine and ends up as a refined product at the refinery. The copper refinery in Texas is known as the Amarillo Copper Refinery (ACR) and is located in Amarillo, Texas. It was built in 1975 to replace 3 other aging refineries and was designed to produce 550,000 tons (500,000 MT) of refined copper per year using conventional starter sheet technology. At the time it was commissioned it was the largest tankhouse in the world at just under 1/2 miles long under one roof.

In this paper, we report on the detection of spectral molecular emission of iron oxide (FeO) and copper oxide (CuxO) emitted by reactions occurring in a laboratory scale flash smelting process of pyrite (FeS2) as well as copper concentrate. The novelty of the technique is that, the molecular spectral emission sensing is achieved by using a low spectral resolution and low sensitive radiometer, enhanced with signal processing and matrix factorization techniques. The method was validated using a highly sensitive spectrometer, with a high spectral resolution; achieving a similar FeO spectral pattern as the one obtained after signal processing techniques over low resolution spectral signals. INTRODUCTION Visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy is an optical contactless sensing technique commonly used to capture information about the emitted, absorbed, transmitted or scattered radiation in a physical or chemical process, with the presence or absence of an excitation light source such as a laser or a broad spectral band source. These techniques coupled with signal processing and machine learning algorithms, sometimes referred as chemometrics (Pisapia et al., 2018), can be found in processes such as: pharmaceutical (Kandpal et al., 2016); food (Coelho et al., 2016); combustion (Ballester & García-Armingol, 2010); siderurgy (Strakowski et al., 2014) industry, among others. In the extractive copper industry there are several technological developments using optical sensing techniques aimed to retrieve information about copper ore and concentrate mineralogical composition such as X-Ray Fluorescence, Qemscan® (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) and X Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, however, because of the manual procedures to analyze the samples with these laboratory instrumentation, only discrete information during a daily based operation can be retrieved, making impossible for the operators to take decisions over the involved processes in real time. The aim of our research work presented here is to contribute with sensing and data analysis procedures based on VIS-NIR spectroscopy for the flash smelting process characterization, particularly in this paper, with the detection of FeO and CuxO molecular emissions in a laboratory scale setup.

The steadily growing demand for metals and their price increase at metal exchanges make the mining and utilization of marine mineral resources like polymetallic nodules, manganese crusts or sulfide deposits in the near future a viable option to potentially increase the supply of base and precious metals. For a country with low potential to mine land-based resources like Germany, the industrial recovery of metals from marine mineral resources could lead to a decreased dependency on imports. In this study, seafloor massive sulfides from the German license area in the Indian Ocean (Kairei field, Southern Central Indian Ridge) are treated to recover copper and precious metals. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the transferability of existing metallurgical techniques to the raw material of deep-sea massive sulfides. As a starting point to process this unconventional resource, samples from the Indian Ocean are chemically analyzed and mineralogical characterized. A comparison is carried out between the samples and land-based copper resources, to highlight the potential which lies in mining the deep-sea floor. This paper will show the general possibility of applying a two-stage pyrometallurgical process, based on a concentrate smelting operation, followed by a converting operation in lab-scale to the provided samples of massive sulfides. Generated slag from the concentrate smelting and the converting operation are investigated by X-ray diffraction to determine the mineralogical composition. The two-stage pyrometallurgical process is investigated by the thermochemical modelling tool FactSageTM 7.2 to evaluate the phase distribution of relevant elements between the metal, matte, slag and gas phase. The thermochemical boundaries of the pyrometallurgical process are therefore set and the results of the thermochemical study can be used as an indicator for the efficiency of an up-scaled process and the generated amount of side-streams, which need to be further treated or circulated back into the process. INTRODUCTION Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) are the third kind of discovered deep-sea minerals besides ferromanganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Sharma, 2017). They occur in water depths around 250–4,000 m (Koschinsky et al., 2018). SMS are characterized by a high base metal and sulfide content. They were created by fluid circulation and hydrothermal convection over time (Han et al., 2018). Commonly, areas rich in SMS are associated with hydrothermal vent fields on the seafloor (Keith et al., 2018).

This work presents visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy measurements, and signal analytical techniques to characterize minerals and relevant pyrometallurgical process variables for the copper extractive industry. Data signal processing techniques such as baseline correction and numerical analysis are used to estimate the continuous and discontinuous spectral components. Such spectral components are used to estimate the process temperature, and patterns such as the integrated radiation. Also, metal combustion emissivity calculation are depicted. Our findings suggest that VIS-NIR spectroscopy may be a suitable technique to assess the process condition state, appearing as an interesting sensing alternative. INTRODUCTION Although the flash smelting process is one key stage in the copper extractive industry, representing about 40% of copper matte production worldwide (Cantallopts, 2017), few attention is dedicated to develop sensing solutions to assess process variables, such as mineralogical composition and temperature, in the feeding and bleeding stages, compared to the steel industry (Strakowski, et al., 2014). In this process and other industries, e.g. the thermoelectric power generation one, combustion and particularly the generated flame are the production chain’s heart. Since the flame is a highly radiative emitting process where chemical and physical transformations take place, many works had been dedicated to characterize the combustion state by sensing its radiation using optical and photonic technologies (Ballester & García-Armingol, 2010). In this context, this work aims to contribute with visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy and pyrometry techniques to retrieve relevant information from a laboratory scale flash smelting process. On the other hand, since photonic instrumentation allow us to perform contactless measurements of emitted, absorbed, transmitted or scattered radiation, it appears as a suitable technique for sensing process properties in harsh environments, e.g. high temperature processes. One of these techniques is the Visible- Near Infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy, which provides information about the spectral radiation intensity distribution, in this work, the emitted flame’s radiation. It is well known in combustion research that the spectral emission from a flame is composed by a black body continuous radiation background, molecular emissions, elemental emissions and additive noise features (Arias et al., 2011). To make sense of such information signal processing techniques are needed, here we propose to analyse the continuous and discontinuous spectral components separately.

Wear mechanisms of two commercial aluminum alloys, namely a spray formed and extruded Al-25%Si alloy, and a sand cast A390 alloy (18.5 %Si) that are known to be successful in cylinder bore technology were studied to have a better understanding of the requirements for wear resistant aluminum alloy design. From durability point of view these alloys are known to be successful for engine bore applications. It is interesting to compare the wear mechanisms in these alloys because they have significantly different silicon content and microstructures, and were produced using different techniques. The wear tests were done using a block-on-ring configuration, in controlled air atmospheres (5 % relative humidity). In spite of the differences in silicon content and microstructure, the wear mechanisms were similar and consisted of formation and destruction of hard tribolayers that are either formed by either mechanical or chemical interactions on contact surfaces. The differences in the wear rates between the two alloys arose from the differences in the hardness of the worn surfaces, and the alloy's ability to sustain the tribolayers on the worn surfaces.

Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

"ALTHOUGH coal is generally the cheapest fuel on the basis of heating value it has been at a disadvantage in competition with other fuels because means have not been available for efficient •Conversion of its thermal energy to mechanical work. Taking the •railway application •as an example, the cost of Diesel oil is about three times that of its thermal equivalent in coal, but the overall efficiency of a Diesel locomotive is about five times that of a coal-fired steam locomotive. Accordingly, the Canadian railways are replacing all coal-fired steam Locomotives, as they are retired from service, with Diesel units. This conversion in itself represents a major loss to the coal industry because the value of railway fuel is approximately 130 million dollars per year, and there are other applications in the medium power range where oil is displacing coal. There is, therefore, a strong incentive to attempt development of an efficient coal-burning engine.Coal has never been a promising fuel for reciprocating internal combustion engines because of the time required for its combustion in pulverized form . This is not less than one-tenth of a second so that the speed of such an engine would have to be very slow. There are also serious difficulties of a mechanical nature arising from the necessity for intermittent combustion and the use of close-fitting pistons."

L'affinage des grains dans les alliages d'aluminium consiste à augmenter le nombre de sites de cristallisation de la phase a-Al afin d'obtenir une structure fine. Les alliages mères de type Al-Ti-B sont largement utilisés comme raffineurs des grains. Cette étude a pour but d'établir des mécanismes convenables d'affinage des grains dans l'alliage A356 en utilisant cinq alliages mères et deux températures de coulée (750°C et 950°C). Les résultats montrent que la phase a-Al prend une forme selon l'alliage mère ajoute; les échantillons coules a haute température montrent une taille de grain plus grosse; les températures de germination et de croissance augmentent avec I' augmentation du Ti ou du B et la taille des grains diminue. L'alliage mère Al-4%B montre une puissance remarquable en comparaison d'autres alliages mères. Pour cet alliage mère, le titane résiduel dans l'alliage A356 réagit avec le bore pour former TiB2 qui, par la suite, agit comme un germe actif pour la phase a-Al.

"Gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanide leaching have been investigated for over a century. The variation in the severity of the problem from one ore to another has led to a range of different processes being implemented at different mine sites. Most commercial options utilise one or more of the following processes: roasting, carbon pre-flotation, organic blinding, CIL, chlorine passivation, pressure oxidation, biological passivation, elevated temperature CIL, RIL and thiosulfate. This paper provides a background to identify the most appropriate process or combination of processes for a particular ore. It also presents information on how these processes may be implemented, drawing on information in the literature and from current or recent applications at operations such as the following: Stawell, Kumtor, Penjom, Twin Creeks, Macraes Flat, Kittilä, Fosterville, Inata, Carlin, Goldstrike, and Jerritt Canyon. Various process options have been dismissed, or deemed unsuccessful due to limited knowledge available on the strengths and weaknesses of the different options and their implementation. The authors have collectively been involved in flowsheet development and project implementation in four commercial plants that have treated preg-robbing ores.INTRODUCTION Cyanide processing has been the mainstay of gold recovery for well over a century. It is generally a very effective process with over 90% recovery on free milling ores, but complex and refractory ores may only give 0–50% recovery with conventional processing (La Brooy et al., 1994). People have written about gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanidation for over a century e.g. Feldtmann, (1915). The earliest reports related to African operations, but the issue has since been reported in Canada, North and South America, Australia, Russia and China. The phenomenon is usually referred to as ‘preg-robbing’ dating from the times before the use of granular activated carbon for gold recovery, when gold was lost from the pregnant solution before it could be separated from the leach solids and recovered by cementation. Although heap bioleaching has been recognized as an economic alternative for treating low grade mineral ores, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes involved are complex. A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap bioleaching processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool - HeapSim. This tool can be of great help in the design and operation of heap bioleaching processes. In this paper, the mathematical model implemented in HeapSim is examined. The model takes into account mineral kinetics, particle level effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas absorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation. Three case studies where the model has been applied are briefly discussed. SMS Group (SMSG) has always been concerned about safety aspects of electric smelter plants for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. The awareness for safety increased significantly over the past decades and also SMSG contributed with its design features to a safer operation. Today, safety aspects are not only part of the smelter design but also of the overall plant layout. Explosions in electric smelters are rare, but have a huge impact on peoples’ lives, on equipment and on production. For this reason, SMSG wanted to have a better overview of explosions within the smelting industry in order to see if useful statistics could be extracted. Generally, there is a lack of statistics regarding explosions in the electric smelting industry, and not enough information is collected or published. A significant portion of the explosions seems to be water related. Many companies, both operating and engineering, are trying to handle the risks of water, and apply methods to detect water leakages. Installing such a system is a management decision and management has then to make sure the system is properly implemented. The disadvantages and limitations of these systems should be carefully considered and communicated to operators and authorities.
