MR. E. L. Longmore (l), in presenting this paper at the Annual General Meeting, suggested that it was neither desirable nor necessary to read any but the briefest portion of the paper. He wished to emphasize that the scale of the milling operations at the Hollinger not only provided several units in continuous operation to ensure that the test work was being carried on under normal conditions, but also provided a large and competent staff to supervise such an extensive experiment and to criticize intelligently the recorded results. He wished to acknowledge the enthusiastic co-operation of the group of assistants whose excellent work was responsible for the confidence with which the conclusions could be presented. The following data were given as a supplement to the published paper. Following conclusion of the test work described in the paper, the size of the balls fed to the mill was changed from 3-in. diameter to 2Yz-in. Within a short time, a gradual rise in the tonnage rate took place and, as no other condition had been changed, the increased tonnage was credited to the changed character of the ball load. At present, the average daily tonnage for the mill with low discharge is 1,507 tons, an increase of 77 tons over the 1,430 tons ground when feeding a 3-in. ball. A similar increase in tonnage should be credited to the high-discharge test, if the 2;Y2-in. ball had been used at that time. This would raise the 1,117 tons ground at that time to a new figure of 1,177 tons. From a study made to determine those factors influencing the rate of pulp flow through the low-discharge mill, it became evident that the ball screen used on the high-discharge mill must have been restricting the flow through the mill, although this was not recognized at the time. Accord-ingly, it was decided to repeat the high-discharge run. Additional length was added to the 21-in. ring grizzly originally used, and the length of the reverse spiral was increased. The end of the grizzly was left open so that, if necessary, excess pulp might flow out. A coarse mesh 3 ft. by 3 ft. flat screen was provided to catch stray balls.

"Filter cloth in the mining industry is an ambiguous title asthis suggests filter cloth use from underground ventilation to the refining processes. The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

In situ bulk density of coal is a variable applied to various aspects of coal resource evaluation, such as compositing ply analyses of coal attributes that are expressed on a weight per cent basis, and determining tonnages from volume estimates. Its value is a function of composition and porosity of the in situ material. When densities of ash-free coal, ash and water are fixed, in situ bulk density of a coaly mix can be expressed as a function of proportionate weight of ash in the mix. Correlations between in situ bulk densities and weight per cent ash contents of coaly mixes have been estimated for four general rank classes of coal (low medium volatile bituminous, high volatile bituminous, subbituminous, and lignitic).

"The characterization of the failure process of induced fractures by hydraulic stimulation is fundamental to understanding the generation and evolution of the discrete fracture network within the reservoir. A more detailed analysis of the fracture mechanism can be a powerful tool for identifying fluid flow paths and proppant placement within the reservoir. For example, during the rupture process the energy release is partitioned into different physical processes for which the relative ratio is changed by the presence of fluids or rotations in the local stress field with relation to the frictional resistance in the fracture plane. Fractures occurring in the same host rock under the same stress conditions are expected to rupture similarly, independent of their size (self-similarity). Changes in the scaling relationships of fractures are indicative of a change in the failure process, host rock or in-situ stress. Correlation of failure process data with reservoir rock properties and the in-situ stress field will help identify regions within the reservoir with characteristic types of failures. Further correlation with hydrocarbon production data can be used to develop efficient treatment plans and production diagnostic tools.In this study we investigate the failure process of ~27,000 microseismic (M < -1) fractures induced during a hydraulic fracturing shale completion program in NE British Columbia, Canada by estimating static and dynamic source parameters, such as dynamic and static stress drop, radiated energy, seismic efficiency, moment tensor, fracture plane orientation, slip direction and rupture velocity. On average, the microseismic events have low radiated energy, low dynamic stress and low seismic efficiency, consistent with the obtained slow rupture velocities. Events fail in overshoot mode (slip weakening failure model), with fluids lubricating faults and decreasing friction resistance. Events occurring in deeper formations tend to have faster rupture velocities and are more efficient in radiating energy. Variations in rupture velocity tend to correlate with variation in depth, fault azimuth and elapsed time, reflecting a dominance of the local stress field over other factors.Further identification of spatial and temporal distribution of families of events with similar characteristic rupture behaviors, based on either rock formation, depth, source type, fracture plane orientation, stress drop, pad or proppant stage, may be used as a proxy for specific fracture network development and hydrocarbon production. This information may be used to determine reservoir properties, constrain reservoir geo-mechanical models with measured physical parameters, classify dynamic rupture processes for fracture models and improve fracture treatment designs. These will be the focus of future studies."

Transmission of vibration to the operator from percussive vibrating tools is increasingly of concern in industrial and mining applications. Prolonged exposure to high levels of vibration transmitted via the hand causes disorders known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The vascular component of HAVS is called vibration white finger (VWF) and has a debilitating effect on the hand. Vibration at frequencies below 1250 Hz, a tight hand-grip force and cold environments are reported to increase the likelihood of developing VWF. A vibration damping handle design with patents pending that addresses some of the causes of VWF has been developed and retrofits onto jackleg pneumatic rock drills. The handle is decoupled from the drill while maintaining jackleg twist-grip controls on the hand-grip using a combination of sealed self adjusting hydraulic pistons and compliant materials in series, and a new air control valve. The ergonomics of the hand-grip was also modified by the addition of a polyurethane sleeve with a diameter of 50 mm. The new hand-grip reduces direct cold metal contact and minimizes grip force. Measurement of vibration as the quantity acceleration was made in accordance with international standard ISO 5349. Overall vibration damping in all axes of 50% to 63% was attained at frequencies below 1250 Hz. The dimensions of the damping handle are comparable and its weight is only 100 g heavier than a standard handle.

"The Sherman Mine, Temagami, Ontario, is an iron ore pellet operation rated at one million tons per year capacity. Mining is done from three open pits in two bands of Keewatin iron-formation intercalated in a 'greenstone belt' thought to be part of the Archean 'Abitibi Belt'. The bands of iron-formation are tabular and steeply dipping, averaging 75 degrees. The principal ore mineral is magnetite.Blast holes, 1214 inches in diameter, are drilled on 28-foot centers, each hole being sampled and assayed for both total iron and magnetic iron. Concentration tests are made in the laboratory to determine the anticipated concentrate grade. Two classes of ore are recognized -'liberating' or 'refractory'. Blending is done on iron con-.tent, degree of ease of liberation (i.e. grain size) and chunkiness. The latter is important, as primary milling is done in autogenous mills. Actual daily mill results are compared with predicted grade from blast holes, exploration diamond drill holes and pit inspection. Hourly mill samples are analyzed by the X-Ray Fluorescent Analyzer, with emphasis on silica grade. In 1969, the pellet grade was improved from 7 .01 per cent silica natural to 5.50 per cent silica natural."

Agglomeration has as main objective to form a uniform and highly permeable heap for leaching. An inaccurate dosage of moisture during agglomeration leads directly to poor agglomerate quality and segregation of particle sizes during stacking. This causes a heterogeneous distribution of the leach solution inside the heap which invisibly and practically permanently affects the recovery. Unfortunately, only when this becomes serious and the mineral contains an excess amount of fine particles and/or clays then the poor permeability of the pile becomes obvious. This paper is based on the experience of Minera Cerro Verde in the development and application of a quantitative method to control moisture during agglomeration. As the amount of fine particles/clays varies, the quantity of moisture has to be altered in real time. The measurement of agglomerate electrical conductivity is used for it. This concept is based on the sharp change seen in conductivity when the mineral passes its absorption limit. A liquid conductive film then begins to form over the surface of the particles, which leads to the formation of agglomerates through liquid bridges, which are also electrical bridges. Moisture is adjusted to reproduce a value of conductivity established previously and is the guiding parameter. Moreover, moisture amount added to reach this conductivity parameter provides information about the fines/clays relative content for best leaching management.

"The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. Bioremediation has been accepted as a treatment technique for groundwater contamination in subsurface soils and shows promise for contaminated fractured rock environments. Biological growth in fractured rock is expected to occur predominantly as biofilms attach to the fracture surfaces. Biofilms in rock fractures are subject to a complex system of forces and other phenomenon due to the dynamics of the bulk fluid in which they grow. In this paper, through the applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to rock fractures, where the boundaries are rough and the flow is complex, a precise analysis was conducted of the interaction of a fluid flow and the rock fracture. Specifically, hydraulic parameters and velocity profiles of an actual rock fracture were calculated and compared to a fracture of equivalent aperture. From the analysis it is clear that it is important to use more complex models such as the Lattice Boltzmann Method used is this paper to describe fracture flow.

Due to urban subway tunnels mostly built in the cities with highly density buildings, the geological and construction conditions is complex, especially certain sections of the subway tunnel will pass through from the foundation of the overpass, therefore the stability and surface deformation control of that section’s tunnel excavation is particularly important. Taking Xi'an Metro Line Three interval tunnel as a research object, we have used FLAC3D simulation to analyze the tunnel’s surrounding soil deformation and tunnel lining stress distribution under bridge foundation with shallow buried covered excavation method. Analysis results show: (1) After the excavation of the tunnel right line, due to the bias of the upper bridge foundation the right of the tunnel showed relatively large deformation. In order to ensure the construction safety, we recommended using the grouting anchor reinforcement on the right side wall to further control the deformation zone. (2) The maximum vertical displacement of the ground occurred in the right wall of the tunnel portion which was due to the intensity of soil outside the grouting range of the arch is low, as a result the deformation is larger; this position requires special attention, strengthening the monitoring measurements of this part is necessary to avoid the large deformation and other adverse effects of the upper portion of bridge foundation. (3) The maximum vertical force area of the initial lining of the tunnel is in the middle of the side wall, while the second lining in this part of forces is smaller, thus at the beginning of the construction of the liner, attention should be paid to this area. On-site grouting or steel bracing reinforce support may be used if necessary.

SAG/AG mills have been most common choice in grinding circuits last decades. In the most cases, at the discharge of SAG/AG mills, a trommel screen is used that is equipped with baffles to provide appropriate residence time and improve separation efficiency. Using baffles, with the resultant maintenance requirements could lead to decrease in mill availability. In this research, an innovation in the structure of baffles of a trommel is presented. The results show that using new baffles led to 67% decrease in SAG mill downtime due to problems of baffles and 80% decrease in fine particles on recycle conveyor.

Prior to 2006, the filtration unit for leached sludge treatment (filter press) permitted the filtration, washing and drying of cake to 17% (w/w) moisture. That year saw moisture content abruptly increase to 20% (w/w), drastically changing the rheological properties of the cake. The cake became sticky and agglomerated. This led to major disruptions of operations and plant capacity (cake release and cake conveyor problems, complicating the subsequent steps of the process). The conditions for the filtration, washing and drying, were simulated to ease cake unloading without aggravating dust emissions (moisture about 17% (w/w)). All of the laboratory tests yielded a moisture content above 17% (w/w). Therefore, we concluded that the moisture problems were not due to a recipe change in primary material, but to an operational problem in the filter press. Through the laboratory results, the filter press operating conditions (washing ratio, drying pressure and drying time) were optimized to enable a reduction in cake moisture to 17% (w/w).

In addition, on site measurements have added new knowledge of UCG technology. A series of laboratory tests based on physical models shows promise for managed UCG process control.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

"This paper describes the performance properties of a new 95 ksi minimum yield strength, oil well casing grade designed specifically to resist hydrogen sulphide stress corrosion cracking, SSCc. The new grade, Soo-95SS, demonstrates NACE Tensile threshold values greater than 90% specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, and NACE Bent Beam values in excess of 12.7 x 1()4 psi. The new Soo-9588 grade also exhibits superior collapse and notch toughness values. IntroductionIn recent years, a trend toward casing grade specialization has resulted in the introduction of numerous proprietary grades designed specifically for particular production environments, In response, Algoma Steel has developed, as part of a "" grade for service"" philosophy, two new 95 ksi minimum yield grades. The two grades are Soo-95, High Collapse (HC), and Sour Service (SS). This paper describes the development of Soo-95 Sour Service.Four main objectives were established:1. "Overland conveyor systems to transport bulk materials from mines to processing plants or load-out stations have to be seriously considered as the viable alternative to truck and train haulage systems. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, conveyors with their electrical drives generally prove to be the least costly when operating and maintenance expenses are analyzed for the life of the installation.IntroductionOverland conveyor systems are now considered as one of the viable alternatives which should be closely investigated when a mining company and its engineers initiate studies on methods of transporting raw materials from a mine to a processing plant or rail load-out station.This paper will generalize the overland conveyor and compare it with alternative handling systems. Each installation must be carefully studied to determine the best route, type of foundations river crossings; amount of excavation work for cut and fill, maintenance roads, etc. No two locations are the same nor are the principles of operation of an overland conveyor the same as those of a normal plant or mine belt conveyor. The proper time and effort must be put into the study of the system to evaluate the costs for comparison with other systems.The length of the overland conveyor depends on the layout of the mine and plant and the topography of the terrain between the terminals. Individual lengths may be up to 20 km, and a series of conveyors may extend 100 km or more.Advantages of Overland ConveyorsThe main advantage of overland conveyors is the low operating and maintenance costs which will be realized over its years of operation. Although truck haulage probably will permit lower capital investment during the initial phases of the mine development when the annual capacities have not developed to the design level, their operating and maintenance costs will be considerably higher. When evaluating the total costs per ton of material to be handled during the expected life of the operation and the projected increases for diesel fuel versus electricity, overland conveyor systems will generally prove to be economically more viable."

"The problems presented by ice formation and interference with processes, structures and mechanical operations in the mining industry can be expected to increase sharply as more of our mineraI needs are supplied from the far north. A process of rapid ice destruction is presented which lends itself to the effective removal or penetration of ice. Suggestions are offered for applying the system to problems related to mining activity in cold environments. The system can be readily adapted to large-scale operation, the reactant components being transported in crystalline form and volatilized on site.IntroductionThe number of operational mines in northern environments, relative to the number of mines in the temperate zone, will increase in the years ahead. This is not surprising, because:(a) in the past, those mines closest to centres of commerce had minimum transport charges and hence were more economic to develop;(b) great centres of commerce were far removed from northern environments;(c) the exhaustion of ores and lowering of grades in temperate zones now offset to some degree the extra transport costs applied to northern ores;(d) the abundance of excess energy in the north in the form of oil, gas and hydropower attracts mining as a means to justify its development; (e) assuming that the frequency of mineral occurrence north of the 52° N latitude is no different than south of it, there are many deposits waiting to be developed.As a result of current and projected activity in northern environments, we are faced today, and will be increasingly so in the future, with mining problems rarely encountered before-problems related to below-freezing temperatures. Engineering activity in permafrost regions will increase as new mining ventures are developed north of the 52° N latitude, roughly coinciding with the -1.1 ° C isotherm in Labrador, the upper temperature boundary for permafrost."

Golder Associates provided overall radiological direction and assistance to the client in their interactions with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and operational radiation protection services for the remediation of a calciner that had been used to process uranium. The project was somewhat unusual in that the radioactivity from within the calciner room was removed from the site and the cleaned steel recycled. The presence of yellowcake within the process equipment required stringent radiation protection measures. This project was completed successfully with minimal radiation exposures to the workers and the effective protection of the environment.
