"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.

"Usually, steady state mass balances are used for the design of mineral processing plants. However, this tool does not take into account the impact of process inputs variability nor does it evaluate process transient behaviours between stationary states, such as mill start-up and shutdown. The use of advanced simulations enables the integration of dynamic behaviours in process design decision-making by highlighting situations that are undetectable by using only steady state mass balances. Applying these simulation tools to brown field projects allows the simulator performances to be calibrated and validated on actual plant data before it is used as a prediction tool for the modified plant.Three (3) simulators were implemented at the design stage of a major upgrade project for an ore processing plant in order to assess process behaviours under different production scenarios. These simulators were built to evaluate the impacts on major elements such as mine production, ore stockpile, concentrator production as well as water demand. A validation of individual equipment models was performed whenever sufficient measured data was available. The simulators were then used to study the impact of ore variability (grade, hardness, throughput), to assess day-to-day production special events, and to evaluate the true stockpiles live capacity.The use of a stochastic simulator for equipment sizing allowed a more precise sizing of many pieces of equipment and avoided important expenses in the fresh water pumping system. The dynamic simulator also confirmed that the water in place system would suffice, even in the most demanding production scenario. Finally, the stockpile simulator allowed an important production bottleneck to be quantified and then made possible the assessment of various practical solutions for the stockpiling-reclaiming issues.Post start-up, process data underlines the fact that using advanced simulation tools was useful to mitigate process-related risks associated to the plant expansion, showing generally accurate prediction and adequate equipment sizing, leading to smooth process commissioning. The presented methods are part of what is now routine in Soutex’s participation in both greenfield and brownfield projects."

Secondary leaching of previously leached supergene copper ore has been developed and implemented at Teck’s Quebrada Blanca operations. This consists of using in-situ leaching techniques aided by geophysics to recover the residual metal value from dormant copper leaching heaps. These heaps of crushed and agglomerated ore had been leached 20 years previously but still contained significant copper values. The concept was first tested on a 3,200 m² sector, where injection wells introduced leaching solution into a production zone and electro-resistivity tomography was used to track solution movement within. Operating parameters such as well spacing and injection flow rates were determined. Copper recovery and leaching performance were evaluated based on solution and metallurgical balances. Both ferric leaching and bacterial leaching were enhanced through strategies to pull air into the heap. Positive results from the initial test prompted a larger, industrial pilot test on a 60,000 m² area and 97 injection wells. This larger test obtained a copper recovery of 30% in 457 days. Secondary recovery is now being implemented to all of the abandoned heaps at Quebrada Blanca and has become a production stream. This technology has the potential of wide application to mature copper heap leach operations, and Teck has patented the process and associated methodologies. INTRODUCTION Heap leaching of copper secondary sulphides has been carried out at Quebrada Blanca (QB) since 1994. Ore from the supergene deposit was crushed and agglomerated prior to leaching. Originally, the ore was leached in 6 m lifts stacked one on top of another, known as a static pad configuration. However, in 1998, after the second lift, the operation changed to a dynamic pad configuration; the ore was leached in a single lift and the resulting residues were removed to make way for fresh ore (Yáñez, Ahlborn, & Ramos, 2007). The first two static lifts were left in place and served as a foundation for the dynamic lifts above. Those two buried lifts of leached residues, some 16.8 million tonnes and covering an area of approximately 0.71 million m², remained buried under the dynamic pad.

"Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action needed to minimize its impact on the process. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality. Recovery losses in downstream leaching or flotation circuits justify the effort in developing techniques for the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction. Two approaches for the detection of hydrocyclone fault are presented in this paper. The first proposed method uses the conventional sensors available in a grinding circuit allowing real time detection of hydrocyclone abnormal operation. The second technique is based on the use of vibration sensors installed on the hydrocyclone of a nest. This last technique enables the classification of the hydrocyclone malfunction as surging, overloading and plugged apex. The two techniques can be combined to increase the robustness of the problem detection.INTRODUCTIONHydrocyclones are used for many purposes ranging from water separation, fines removal and obviously for the preparation of the feed for subsequent concentration circuits in a mineral processing plant. The strategic role of the hydrocyclones for the preparation of the feed to the concentration circuit is often underestimated because of their simplicity of operation and robustness (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; McIvor, 1988). It remains that despite their simplicity, hydrocyclones have been studied extensively from 1970 to 1990 with the objective of developing mathematical models of their operation to be incorporated into grinding circuit simulators (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Lynch, 1977; Flintoff et al., 1987). Such a development effort is already an acknowledgement of the importance of these units in a mineral processing plant. Several authors (Del Villar et al., 1996; Plitt and Kawatra, 1979; Casali et al., 1998) proposed soft sensors to estimate the classification efficiency of hydrocyclones using sensor measurements. However, few of the proposed sensors are used in the industry. More recently several papers were published to discuss the application of 3-D modelling of the hydrocyclones (Narasimha et al., 2005; Cullivan et al., 2004) and sensors (Bond et al., 1999; Neesse et al., 2003; Hou et al., 1998; Olson and Waterman, 2004; Williams et al., 1995; Willams et al., 1997) to help in the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction."

"The CANMET SPOC project aims at inducing progress in process evaluation and optimization by developing user oriented software based on state-of-the-art theory. The present work is the result of a joint effort by CANMET, Noranda Mines and Université Laval to develop two computer packages: one (RTD) to calculate the residence time distribution that best describes the material transport through the mill, the other (FINDBS) to estimate the rate of breakage and distribution function of the population balance model in a ball mill. The RTD package can handle data from various experimental methods (impulse or complex tracer feed, with or without recycling, etc...). The FINDBS package provides options for the functional description oj both model parameters Band S. The full detail of the methods and programs appears in a users guide. The program capabilities and several sample runs are presented.IntroductionSimulation of mineral dressing operations by computer has been largely contained within academic and research circles and has not yet gained a status of routine practice in the ore and coal industries. It is however a matter of time before process simulators are available on every process engineer's desk to assist process optimization tasks, flowsheet design and professional training. The CANMET SPOC project (Simulated Processing of Ore and Coal) was initiated in 1980 to assist the Canadian industry in integrating computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization(1). Software development, documentation and transfer is one of the main priorities of the project which will mature in 1985 by releasing a complete package of manuals and programs covering sampling, material balance computation, unit modelling, flowsheet simulation and optimization . This paper is a condensed description of a typical project element in its 1982-1983 state of development. The required methodology for ball-mill modelling and simulation was consolidated an d merged to other project elements during a joint study under contract financed by CANMET and Noranda Mines Ltd . The first part of the study dealt with documenting experimental methods and software for ball-mill computer simulation. Université Laval GRAAIM (Goupe de Recherche en Automatistion Appliquée à l'Industrie Minérale) acted as sub-contractor for this part of the study(16,17). A second part dealt with applying the model calibration techniques to a large industrial data base and is reported elsewhere(2,18,19)."

Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. "Froth depth, along with reagent addition and aeration rate, is one of the crucial factors that can be used to control a flotation circuit. Sub-optimal setpoints and disruptions in levels have a severe adverse influence on grades and recoveries. A novel control strategy has been developed which provides exceptionally tight regulation of pulp levels. The controller observes and acts on all the flotation levels simultaneously. This provides a clear improvement over the standard approach, which is to use a set of Pl controllers. The system has been run on several industrial plants and has resulted in reduced fluctuations in level; fast responses to setpoint changes, and fast settling times after start-ups or disturbances. Testwork has shown that the improvements in level stabilisation translate into improvements in recovery and grades.IntroductionProcess control and optimization have an important influence on the economic efficiency of flotation plants. Inefficient operation can allow the wrong balance between grades and recoveries, and can also lead to adverse shifts in the grade-recovery relationship. Of all metallurgical operations, flotation loses the largest proportion of valuable material. Better operation can reduce these losses.An essential requirement of a good controller is that it should be able to stabilize and regulate the plant. Stable operation allows the performance of the plant to be observed without being obscured by the effects of disturbances and fluctuations. The optimum conditions can then be detected more easily. Good regulation can maintain operation at the optimum with proper neutralization of disturbances. Only when good stabilization and regulation are achieved can an optimizing strategy be properly applied.Froth depth, aeration rate and reagent addition are the three means by which a flotation plant is generally controlled. These control actions are effective on different time scales. Reagent addition is slower in its effect as some conditioning time is required. Since reagents are only added at the head of the circuit and at a few selected points within the banks, time is required for the effect of reagent changes to move through the circuit. Because of this slower time constant, reagent addition is more suited to process optimization and to dealing with slower changes in the process. An example of these slower changes is variation in the feed."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to give a •brief history of iron and steel in British Columbia, a quick look at the present operations of Western Canada Steel, Limited, a review of iron ore resources and iron and steel markets, and a projection of what the future might hold for the industry in British Columbia.From the Past to the PresentWhile the paper is entitled Past, Present, and Future, in covering the past, which we shall call the time prior to 1947, there is very little to be said. Small shipments of iron ore were made from the Texada deposits by the Puget Sound Iron Company from 1886 to 1907. Total ore shipped did not exceed 70,000 tons. Part of this is believed to have been used in building a United States battleship in 1907 in the Bremerton Naval Yards in Seattle, Washington.In 1914 a small steel mill was started on Lulu island, rolling bars from •box piles and used shafting. This mill operated spasmodically for a few years but finally burned down in 1921. The rolling mill stands were sold to China and are no doubt in operation in China today.In 1916 the City of Port Moody assisted in the financing of a mill which operated on re-roll rails, box piles, and steel ingots made in an experimental electric furnace in Port Moody. This furnace also produced small quantities of pig iron scrap. The backers of the Port Moody mill showed a great deal of enterprise and must have been a very forward looking group, since this was one of the first recorded applications of the electric furnace to small ingot production. Despite their enterprise, the operation was unsuccessful and terminated in 1921."

IT IS most appropriate that this first Memorial Lecture should be given in the Province of Quebec, near the site of the first metallurgical industry in Canada. At La Forge, about seven miles north of Three Rivers, iron was produced in 1783. We are told that the early settlers obtained most of their iron-ware -stoves, kettles, axes and ploughshares -from this smelter, with its foundry and forge. The Canadian copper industry also had its beginnings in Quebec when, nearly 100 years later, in the 1880's, several small copper smelters were erected in the Eastern Townships. Later, in 1899, Canada's first aluminum smelter was built at Shawinigan. From these small beginnings has grown a vast metals industry, the export value of its products being only exceeded by that of our forest products -newsprint, pulp-wood and lumber. As we are not a large country in terms of population, our domestic capacity to consume is often small in relation to our developed capacity to produce.

The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

"Falconbridge’s Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region, has been in operation since December 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,000,000 tonnes per year. Optimization of the ABC grinding circuit has proven to be the most challenging component of this capacity increase. Concurrent flotation circuit modifications have allowed concentrate grades to increase from 16 to 18 percent nickel, while maintaining recoveries. Concentrate drying problems encountered during the first 15 months of operation have been addressed through equipment upgrades. The challenges associated with surface deposition of filtered tailings in an arctic environment are now better understood, and detailed design of the progressive reclamation cover is underway.GRINDINGCircuit OverviewOre from open pit and underground mining operations is introduced to the underground ore handling system via surface and underground truck dumps. Two underground bins with a combined capacity of 4000 tonnes provide roughly a day of live capacity for ore storage. Ore from the two bins is conveyed to a 150 tonne surge bin immediately ahead of the grinding circuit in the concentrator.The Raglan grinding circuit has a conventional ABC configuration (Figure 1) with a design capacity of 100 mtph (800,000 tonnes per year). The 24’ AG mill is powered by a 3000 hp motor with variable speed drive. AG discharge is sized on a 8’x16’ single deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize recirculating to a 5 %’ short head cone crusher (400 hp) before returning to the AG mill. Screen undersize is combined with ball mill discharge to feed up to 5 15” Krebs hydrocyclones. The ball mill is a 14’x 21’ overflow mill driven by a 3000 hp motor at 73% critical speed. Target Pgo for the grinding circuit product is 65 microns"

ACCIDENT prevention as we know and understand it today is of comparatively recent origin. As a matter of fact, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Dominion, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary only this year. On the other hand, one could say that the history of accident prevention is almost the history of mankind itself. In a general sense, every forward step that man has made throughout the centuries has been largely due to two things: (1) a desire for increased comfort, and (2) the need for safety; and, always, the need for safety has taken precedence over the desire for comfort. While it is true that hundreds of volumes have been published, dealing with the many aspects of accident prevention work, you cannot go to a library and pick out a book that has all the answers in it. Such a book has never been published-we are still looking for some of the answers. However, a good deal of real progress has been made.

The Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

"Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. The world wide growth dynamics and the continuously growing demand for energy, results in increasing energy prices. Looking from this point, the efficient exploitation of fossil fuel deposits has become a more important factor to the production of energy raw materials than ever before. This shall be reached by an increase of the automation degree of the bucket wheel excavator in the open pit mining as well as a quality increase of the entire mining process chain. A further optimization of this operation can only be achieved by gathering additional information about the input parameters. The earlier and more exact the description of the input parameter, the greater the effectiveness of the entire process chain. To address this major issue, the RWE Power AG assigned the Institute for Transportation and Automation Technology with the research project "SIMT, Sensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the Interfaces" [Kes07]. Presently, the control of the bucket wheel excavator is carried out manually by the operator, as well as the visual identification of the different geological layers and the energy raw materials. In this paper, a sensor-system is introduced, which was developed in order to transfer the manual material identification and detection of interfaces into an automatic online procedure. A special challenge and the main focus of this contribution is the integration of this sensor system into a bucket of the bucket wheel excavator. For measuring procedures where direct contact with the in situ material is necessary, the sensor has to be integrated into the bucket. Since direct contact with the material is not necessary, it can be integrated next to the bucket wheel. The results of a preliminary study show that although there is a broad spectrum of sensor technologies for material and interface identification, only a few are suitable for an application in on-line measuring at the bucket wheel excavator. Taking into consideration the demands on the sensor technology, the studies carried out and comparable applications of individual sensor technologies which have already taken place in practice, the integration of the following measuring systems have been realized: ground penetrating radar / reflection measurements, geo electric, resistance geo electric technology. The solution developed in the research project offers for the first time the direct integration of sensor systems into the bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. It will now be possible to test other measurement methods and sensors, not only for the ones already mentioned. As an example the integration of a triaxial accelerometer to measure the solid borne sound and vibrations concerning the cutting of different materials will be shown.
