The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the central North Atlantic and the Gorda Ridge within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon are yielding new discoveries of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. The TAG hydrothermal field in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26 degree N, 45 degree W has been a site of international collaborative research since the discovery there of extensive manganese deposits associated with low temperature hydrothermal activity in 1973 as part of the TAG (Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse Project). The first high-temperature hydrothermal activity, massive sulfide deposits and vent biota discovered in the Atlantic were found at the TAG hydrothermal field in 1985. Collaborative dive series with DSV ALVIN in 1990 and in 1991 with the two Russian MIR submersibles in the TAG field have found and sampled large inactive sulfide mounds in addition to the previously known active sulfide mound. The active sulfide mound on the floor of the rift valley is about 250 m in diameter and 40 m high with a concentric zonation of mineral types and flow regimes decreasing in temperature from 365 degree C black smokers at the center to white smokers and diffuse flow toward the margins. The recent dive series in coordination deep-towed instrument surveys have delineated a zone extending about 5 km along the lower east wall of the rift valley of inactive sulfide mounds up to a kilometer in diameter. MIR Mound in this zone consists of a central sulfide zone about 400 m in diameter and 50 m high surrounded by a halo of low-temperature deposits to 200 m wide. Results of the two main drilling operations on hydrothermal fields demonstrate that the two dimensional submersible operations need to be followed by drilling expeditions to study the third dimension of hydrothermal systems and understand hydrothermal and ore forming processes. Two types of environments were drilled recently in basaltic environment on slow spreading ridge, and on a sedimented ridge. Similar work has still to be done and targets to be discussed in other environments such as back-arc basins for felsic rocks environments and slow spreading ridges for ultramafic rock environments.

Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.

The area of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of India is about 2.014 million km2 and the resource evaluation of placer deposits is one of the objectives of Government of India. Placers are detrital metallic minerals found on beaches and in the near shore areas. Quantitatively more important are placer deposits of light heavy minerals such as zircon, ilmenite and rutile. Rivers and other drainage channels are the main carriers of the placers which contain heavy minerals like magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon, monazite, rutile etc. The present beach as well as part of the shelf was land during Pleistocene as a result of the world wide lowering of the sea levels. The coast line shifted a number of times. Hence, the heavy mineral placers on the beaches are expected to extend to offshore areas chiefly with Pleistocene lowered sea level strands. India has extensive deposits of heavy mineral placers along the beaches. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the east and west coasts. Along the central west coast of India (12??N - 19? N lat.) the placer containing 14 - 17% ilmenite form an estimated reserve of 4 million tons. On the Ratnagiri coast of Maharashtra, the proportion of heavy mineral varies between 54 and 70% in the bulk samples, consisting mainly of 14 - 39% magnetite and 16 - 30% ilmenite. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the central west coast consist largely of silty sand, sand silt and clay. The core samples show that a reddish brown clay overlay olive gray clay which in turn overlay heavy mineral rich sands. The heavy mineral concentration ranges upto 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. Siddiquie et al. reported 42 - 75% TiO2 in the ilmenite.

"With the acceptance of an application and a signed contract for prospecting deep-sea sulfides (2012) between the Russian Federation and the ISA, at present it is particularly important to assess the quality of oceanic sulfide minerals and to reliably estimate their resources.Some procedures of geochemical classification (chemical analyses, mineral composition of SMS) and calculations (density of ore, density of the mineral part of the ore, porosity and moisture contents) were used for estimation of mineral resources potential.The key characteristics for estimating the predicted resources of hydrothermal ore fields are the metal contents and the density of wet and dry sulfide ores. However, in the future it is impossible to provide an estimate of the predicted resources without taking into account the following important factors:- the quantitative ratio of main sulfide minerals;- proportion of non-metallic components (opal, quartz, talc);- the replacement of primary minerals by copper sulfides;- texture-structural features of sulfide ores.The offered mineral classification of the SMS is based on the prevalence of minerals in the ores and partly on their composition. The main ore-forming minerals of SMS are pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Sulfide mineralization is accompanied by the presence of nonmetallic minerals, where quartz and opal prevail, and where we also meet aragonite, talcochlorite and anhydrite."

Drilling of the active Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) deposit during ODP Leg 158 indicated that the size of the mound-stockwork complex is approximately 3.9 million tonnes, including 2.7 million tonnes of massive and semi-massive sulfide (ca. 2% Cu) at the seafloor and 1.2 million tonnes of mineralized breccias (ca. 1% Cu) in a subseafloor stockwork. Quartz-pyrite veining in the stockwork zone extends from about 40 meters below seafloor (mbsf) to a depth of 95 mbsf. Siliceous wallrock breccias in the lower part of the stockwork grade abruptly into chloritized basalt breccias at the margins of the mineralized zone, and massive sulfides at the flanks of the deposit onlap relatively unaltered, partially hematized basalts. The pipe-like dimensions of the stockwork zone do not exceed the diameter of the sulfide mound. Comparisons with samples collected during earlier dive series confirm that the vent complexes at the surface of the mound are not representative of the bulk composition of the deposit. Dramatic vertical zonation of metals within the mound suggests that a long history of hydrothermal reworking has effectively stripped the constituents that are soluble at lower temperatures from the massive sulfides and concentrated them at the top of the deposit through a process of zone refining.

A workshop to examine recovery systems for selected strategic and critical materials in the U.S. National Seabeds for the National Defense Stockpile in the 21st Century was held in Hawaii September 26-28, 1991, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Marine Mineral s Technology Center. The National Defense Stockpile of critical and strategic mineral commodities is presently in a deficit position of more than 7.5 billion dollars. Current domestic reserves of some commodities are limited or nonexistent. As defined by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, "Reserves are select resources . . . which at the time of classification, can be mined at a profit." Occurrences of these minerals have been discovered offshore within U.S. jurisdiction. If the technology could be developed to convert these resources into usable ore reserves, our dependence on foreign ores could be greatly reduced. Preliminary estimates indicate that a ten-year program of ore reserves definition, with appropriate technical developments to demonstrate a recovery system, could cost less than half the amount authorized for stockpile acquisition in FY 1989 alone.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

Borehole Mining (BHM) is a remotely operated underground and underwater method of extracting (mining) mineral resources by high-pressure water jets. It can be carried-out from the land surface, open pit floor, underground mine and floating platform or vessel. The method is currently in use in mining and exploration of such natural resources and industrial materials as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, gravel, coal, poly-metallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and several more. Yet another application of Borehole mining technology is construction of subsurface collectors, ground walls and storage for compressed or liquefied gases, oil and other products.

"INTRODUCTIONSeafloor massive sulfides (SMS) along mid-ocean ridges are often seen as a possible future contribution to a secure metal supply for global human needs. A growing interest over the past few years resulted in six national exploration licenses and one application pending, covering 10,000 km2 each, that have been brought before the UN International Seabed Authority (ISA) since 2011. Each contractor has to explore these 10,000 km2 within the 15-year runtime of the contract. However, the need to define areas that are not economically interesting is more pressing, as 50% of the 100 license blocks have to be returned to ISA after only eight years - hopefully areas that do not contain large and economically interesting SMS deposits. Current geochemical prospecting technologies, however, have mainly been developed for the search for active hydrothermal systems (e.g. hydrothermal vents and associated black smokers) that can easily be traced through physical and chemical anomalies in the water column (temperature, chemical variations of elements such as Mn, Fe, redox potential, and/or the particle concentration in the water column). Such plume surveys have been a primary tool for exploration of SMS systems, but they only identify active, and therefore mostly young and small hydrothermal systems. In a recent high-resolution AUV survey performed within the EU-FP7 funded project “Blue Mining”, we covered 47 km2 along the TAG segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to test exploration methodology for fast and reliable exploration of larger areas of the seafloor for inactive seafloor massive sulfide occurrences using the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) “Abyss”."

The Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a two-man portable AUV that is capable of performing seafloor surveys in water depths to 2000 meters. The standard survey sensor suite includes a dual frequency side scan sonar and high resolution digital camera. Additional survey sensors are currently being incorporated into the Gavia AUV, include Sub Bottom sonar, Swath Bathymetry sonar and Multi Beam sonar. The modular design of the Gavia AUV allows the end user to quickly incorporate new sensors including client developed propriety sensors.

The Eastern Manus Basin (EMB) contains three major active hydrothermal zones and a number of smaller occurrences of hydrothermal deposits, and can be considered as a regional-scale modern analogue for volcanic-hosted mineral fields on land. Unlike the central Manus Basin, a back-arc spreading zone with some MORB-like basalt-hosted massive sulfide deposits, the EMB is a pull-apart rift zone between two transform faults, where a basement of Eocene-Oligocene arc crust is being thinned by extension, with rapid sedimentation on the tilted fault blocks. Present-day submarine igneous activity in the EMB, with which hydrothermal activity is associated, has arc geochemical affinities and is related to subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate at the New Britain Trench. Overall, hydrothermal deposits in EMB are found with lavas ranging from picritic basalt to rhyodacite in composition, although the two major occurrences of massive sulfide are hosted by the more siliceous dacite and rhyodacite variants. Some volcanic edifices are central eruptions, mostly of porphyritic lavas or domes, while others are elongate ridges formed by fissure eruption in which the typically aphyric lavas were very fluid. Evidence for shallow-level fractional crystallisation controls of lava chemistry implies presence of subjacent differentiated intrusions or former magma chambers. Seismic tremor at one site during the nearby 1994 Rabaul eruption suggests magma movement in the chamber.

On June 26, 1988, the Jade Hydrothermal Field was discovered in the Okinawa Trough by the German RV Sonne. This research cruise has taken place within the scope of a German-Japanese cooperative project. The Okinawa Trough, located between the Ryukyu Island Chain and the east coast of China, is an active backarc-basin formed by extension within the continental lithosphere. The Ryukyu arc consists of a nonvolcanic outer arc, forming the main island chain and representing compressive highs of the Asian continental margin, and an inner arc with present-day volcanism in its northern part (Sibuet et al. 1988). The valleys and ridges of the trough are cut across by transverse faults, giving rise to younger volcanic intrusions. The Jade Hydrothermal Field was detected in a caldera-like structure. It is. located at about 27°15,0'N and 127°04,5'E with a maxi- mum water depth of about 1650 m. Data of heat flow measurements show a high anomaly in the cauldron basin with values ranging from around 100 to 800 mw/m2 (Halbach et al. 1989). The hydrothermal vent area was discovered in the northern part of the inside northeast slope of the cauldron in a water depth between about 1300 and 1500 m. At present, marine ferromanganese crusts of seamounts are of great interest as a source of high-tech metals. The metals most enriched in these deposits are essential for a wide variety of green-tech, emerging-tech, and energy applications (Hein et al., 2013). There is a grate number data on the content of major and minor metals (thousands analyses). However, information on the content of such elements as platinum, gold and silver in the world literature is limited. The concentrations (N – number of analyses) of platinum, gold and silver in the Pacific are 418 ppb (N = 105), 35 ppb (N = 72), 1.02 ppm (N = 26), respectively, and in the North Pacific Prime Zone - 477 ppb (N = 66), 55 ppb (N = 13), 0.1 ppm (N = 4); in the Atlantic Ocean is 567 ppb (N = 2), 6 ppb (N = 2), 0.20 ppm (N = 18), in the Indian Ocean, 211 ppb (N = 6), 21 ppb (N = 2), 0.37 ppm (N = 9) respectively; (Hein et al., 2013). The northern part of the Pacific is poorly studied in this question. The samples of ferromanganese deposits (FMD) was recovered from the Govorov Guyot (Magellan seamounts), MZh-33 Guyot (Marshall Islands), as well as the Detroit Guyot (Imperor Ridge) and Yomei Guyot (Fe-Mn placer Holes 431 and 431A DSDP, Imperor Ridge).

Seafloor polymetallic sulphides are distributed in the EEZ of Japan, including substantial deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Bonin back-arc basin. In this new frontier, the successful development of these resources in Japan is expected to bring about a new domestic supply of mineral resources. The initial stages of this development are authorized by the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, approved by the Japanese Cabinet on April 26, 2013, and the Plan for the Development of Marine Energy and Mineral Resources, formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 24, 2013. In 2008, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), commissioned by METI, began a survey and technological development programme for the development of the seafloor polymetallc sulphides (PMS) based on these Plans. The examination of four different fields: the evaluation of the amount of the resource, environmental assessment, mining technology, and processing & smelting technology, are concurrently promoted, aiming for commercialization as soon as possible. Based on the results of research for properties of geomorphology and marine environments of the target test sites in the Okinawa trough, which have been ongoing for several years, the preparation of the pilot lifting test included an in-situ excavation and crushing test conducted using test excavating and crushing systems.

Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

"The slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), with a length of ~1.26*104km (Bird, 2003), is the longest mid-ocean ridge on this plant. Separated by the large, left-stepping Equatorial fracture zones, it then be divided into two approximately equal-length parts: Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (NMAR, ~6292km) with an average spreading rate of 24mm/yr, and Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR, ~6332km) of 33mm/yr (calculated from PB2002 model, Bird, 2003). Previous works (e.g. Fouquet 1997, Hannington et al., 2011) suggest that slow-spreading ridge could support hydrothermal activities and further favorable for the development of extensive seafloor massive sulfide deposits (SMS). Unlike the NMAR for which large part has been explored for SMS (Hannington et al., 2011; Beaulieu et al., 2015), the SMAR is amongst the least hydrothermal explored spreading ridges until now (Haase et al., 2005, Beaulieu et al., 2015), though both of them show significant similarities in terms of spreading rate, ridge morphology, segmentation, etc. (Macdonald et al., 2001, Sandwell et al., 2014, Tucholke et al., 2008).Before this work, several hydrothermal cruises had been to SMAR since British and German programs starting in 2002, some hydrothermal fields, along with systematic geophysical data, were newly investigated, and types of geologic setting that can host hydrothermal activity were firstly identified (e.g. German et al., 2008; Haase et al.,2005; Haase et al.,2009; Devey et al.,2010; Schmidt et al.,2011).."

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? Deep ocean mining is experiencing a rebirth following many years of low levels of activity. Large scale mining is being projected as just over the horizon. A lot has been made of the advances in deep water oil and gas developments over the last thirty years, and how this technology is directly applicable to ocean mining. The authors present their views on this from a perspective of a legacy of participating in the development of manganese nodule mining systems in the 1970s, followed by thirty years in the deepwater oil & gas arena. While it is true that great advances have been made in subsea technology, the differences between mining and oil and gas recovery should not be diminished. Fundamentally, oil and gas are stored in compact reservoirs under pressure. Any intervention leads to flow of the material up a pipe to the surface. The seabed hard minerals are stuck in place, either adhering to sticky pelagic sediment (nodules) or bonded together as hard rock (massive sulfides). The minerals require complex machinery in order to be extracted, sized, concentrated and lifted to the surface. Once at the surface the ore must be dewatered, de-fined and transferred to shore for processing. The overflow from this dewatered product must return to the sea in an environmentally satisfactory manner. These steps involve technology unique to mining that has to be addressed in a methodical fashion before commercial mining systems can be designed. The presentation will discuss the critical technical challenges of deepsea mining and thoughts on different routes to commercialization. The program will address the critical technical challenges, as perceived by the authors, and steps required to address them.
