RESINS from a bituminous pitch, a bituminous coal, a lignite tar, a subbituminous pitch, and an electrode binder pitch wore investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The compositions of these resins were determined by four independent methods of structural detemination: (1) Molecular formula and ring analysis, including ring (2) infrared and ultraviolet spectra; (3) combined pyrolysis/gas chromatography, and (4) catalytic dehyrogenation followed by spectra and pyrolysis. The resin structure was correlated with coal structure, and it was concluded that pitch resins probably consist of essentially unaltered coal molecules carried over with the tar vapors in low-temperature carbonization.

"while investigating the presence of heavy strata gases* in certain mines of the East Tintic mining district of Utah, a small, local body of light, very hot gas of high-nitrogen composition was noted in one of the mines. Observations and analyses indicate that this light gas was resulting from very rapid oxidation of finely disseminated pyrite, in lead-silver sulphide ore. The gas was actually mine air which had lost a large proportion of its oxygen content by reaction with the pyrite. This body of gas was hanging in a local high spot about 5 by 5 by 5 feet in size, caused by caving, at the end of a crosscut. Fifty feet from this spot, an air current of 6000 cubic feet per minute was entering the 5 by 7 foot cross-cat from a raise from below.On account of the vapor contained in the gas, the bottom level of the gas could be plainly seen and was practically a horizontal plane, but of slightly wavy appearance, coinciding with the point where an acetylene light was extinguished. This body of gas was visited on three occasions and samples obtained by means of evacaated bulbs and by water displacement. The temperature of the gas was ap¬proximately 175 degrees P. on all three occasions, so that sampling required thick gloves and quick action. Air three feet below the vapor line had a temperature of only 120 degrees F., and a relative humidity of 27 per cent. The stratification of the air and gas mixtures was so sharply defined that the sampler could hold his head a few inches below the vapor level for an appreciable period of time without any noticeable effect other than that due to the high temperature. At one foot below vapor level, it was 135 degrees F., and the relative humidity was 30 per cent. When a candle and an acetylene light were raised into the gas from below, the candle flame was extinguished at a point two inches lower than the acetylene flume, indicating a drop in oxygen content from about 16 per cent to 12 per cent (oxygen content of normal dry air 20.05 per cent) in the distance of two inches."

A survey of firefighting facilities and practices in coal mines conducted by the Bureau of Mines3/ showed such variations in equipment and apparent attitude toward fire protection that a comparison with other industry seemed advisable. Although other industry is confined generally to surface operations and the hazards probably are not as great, the same general methods of extinguishment are employed, so that the cost and protection at least should be comparable. An investigation of industry other than mines revealed a generally greater emphasis placed on fire-combating equipment, fire-brigade training, fire-fighting facility inspection, and fire-hazard elimination, as well as a greater average expenditure for fire protection.

In 1969, the number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry was lower than in any previous year and the number of nonfatal injuries was lower than in any preceding year except 1968. Fatal injuries in 1969 totaled 203 with frequency rates of 0.85 per million man-hours of worktime and 0.36 per million tons of coal These rates were new annual lows. Nonfatal injuries totaled 9,917 with frequency rates of 41.76 per million man-hours and 17.42 per million tons. The severity rate for fatal and nonfatal injuries combined was 7,359 days lost or charged per million man-hours. The average severity was 173 days lost or charged per injury. These statistics represent the injury experience of an average of 133,302 employees per day working an average of 225 days in 5,955 coal mines for a total of 237-5 million man-hours worked and a coal output of 565 2 million tons

Originally developed for use in coal mines where on-shift blasting with explosives was prohibited, compressed-air blasting has been used for the past 15 years as a substitute for fixed explosives. With the current commercially available compressed-air systems -Airdox and Armstrong -coal is dislodged by a high-pressure discharge of air from a pressurized shell placed in the coal borehole. In the original systems stationary compressors were mounted on the surface or in the underground ventilated areas. These proved so successful that a mobile compressor unit was developed for use at the working face. Because of the possibility that such a unit might operate in a gassy atmosphere, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the hazards associated with operation under conditions where firedamp could accumulate in explosive concentrations. This report contains a summary of designs, specifications, costs, and schedules developed for a prototype oil-shale demonstration mining program to be undertaken at the Horse Draw site in the Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The objective of the demonstration program is to assess the feasibility of extracting oil shale and associated saline minerals from deep, rich oil shale zones which occur within the central portion of the Basin. Four mining systems were specified for demonstration. These include (1) chamber and pillar mining with backfill; (2) sublevel stoping with backfill; (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence; and (4) block caving. Commercial-scale designs for each system were modified and scaled down as required to achieve program objectives. The demonstration mine layout and design includes specifications for ore handling, backfilling, ventilation, dewatering, maintenance, and supply systems. A feature of particular interest in the design is the combination of block caving and sublevel stoping methods into a single unit for demonstration of subsidence mining systems in deep oil shale deposits. The report also contains a detailed breakdown of projected capital and operating costs for the demonstration mining program.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has determined the microwave heating rates for a suite of minerals and reagent-grade compounds. Maximum temperature achieved for the samples and the time required to reach temperature are reported. Heating rates of powdered samples are presented as a function of incident powers up to 3,000 W at 2,450 MHz. Descriptions of the microwave cavities, test cells, and a thermocouple assembly used to measure temperature in the microwave field are given. Many minerals of value heated in the microwave field, whereas host rock or gangue materials did not. In general, heating rates increased as incident power was increased. Exceptions to this were some very good (CuO, Fe304, and PbS) and very poor (CaC03 and SiO2) microwave-absorbing materials that showed negligible changes with increased power. Applications demonstrating the use of microwave energy in mineral processing that are described herewith include oxidation-reduction reactions, mineral liberation, and mercury retorting-vaporization. Microwave data on mineral heating rates will provide insight to possible chemical and mineral processing applications as well as assist in predictions of processing parameters.

A diesel particulate matter analyzer capable of direct, real-time measurement of engine exhaust particulate is necessary to effectively institute source control technology currently being used on diesel equipment and to ensure that the control measures are working. To investigate the potential of a differential pressure monitor to measure diesel particulate matter in undiluted exhaust, samples were collected from three different diesel engines-Kubota, Isuzu, and Deutz-running under 12 different RPM and load scenarios. These measurements were compared to elemental carbon concentrations in the sampled exhaust as determined by using the NIOSH 5040 analytical method. Elemental carbon is used as a surrogate measurement for diesel particulate matter. The results of the two data sets were then compared using a linear regression analysis. The coefficient of determination (or R2) was calculated to be 0.98, 0.94, and 0.74 for the Kubota, Deutz, and Isuzu engines, respectively. R2 values of this magnitude indicate that this method can be successful in estimating elemental carbon emissions in the engines tested. In addition, for replicate samples, the coefficient of variation ranged from 7.1% to 10.2% with an average of 8.5%. These data indicate that this method could prove useful to mechanics as they work to maintain engines and DPM control technologies.

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory investigations with the objective of developing an alternative process for recovering cobalt and copper from complex sulfide concentrates. Processes currently used depend largely upon precipitation techniques to remove impurities and recover cobalt from sulfate liquors prepared by oxidative pressure leaching of the sulfide concentrates. The Bureau conducted bench-scale research on a process for treating cobaltite concentrates, comprising (1) oxidative pressure leaching, (2) jarosite precipitation followed by H202 oxidation and pH control to remove iron and arsenic, (3) copper solvent extraction with a mixed hydroxyoxime-amine extractant, (4) copper electrowinning from recirculating acidic strip liquor, (5) selective cobalt extraction from copper solvent extraction raffinate with a phosphinic acid extractant, and (6) electrowinning of cobalt from a recirculating weak acid strip liquor. Overall cobalt and copper recoveries were 91.7 and 84.1 pct, respectively. Electrowon products assayed 99.8 pct Co and 99.89 pct Cu.

Research performed on arcing faults and their interactions with electrical insulating materials within coal-mine power system enclosures are described. This work was performed at The Pennsylvania State University from December 1, 1976 through August 31, 1978. The thrust of this research has been divided into several primary areas. These include the development of a theoretical procedure for computation of three-phase and line-to-line arcing fault currents as a function of time, formulation of arc and tracking models so that arc voltages and energies may be computed, development of a simulation for pressure and temperature rises when a fault interacts with an electrical insulating material within an enclosure, experimental evaluation of electrical insulating materials in terms of their tendency to support and maintain an arc as well as their potential contribution to enclosure pressure rises, and integration of the above research areas to form overall procedures for theoretical and experimental evaluation. During the course of this research, consideration has been given to the possible effects? of an internal methane-air explosion within an enclosure as well as the potential influence of utilization-voltage-level, conductor spacings, and enclosure venting. Conclusions and recommendations address potential means for protection against enclosure failure, internal design considerations, and low-power testing procedures which might be used to evaluate insulating materials to be utilized within an enclosure.

One objective of Project Gnome is to study the feasibility of a phase of the Plowshare program recovering thermal energy from an underground nuclear explosion. The test will be conducted in an underground salt deposit. It is anticipated that some of the energy thus released will be stored as thermal energy in molten salt. This report describes the pre-Gnome experiments conducted at the Federal Bureau of Mines Metallurgy Research Laboratory, Boulder City, Nev. The objectives of this study were to determine the problems involved in the recovery of thermal energy from molten salts to assist in planning the experimental program for the Gnome project.

In recent years the Government and other large consumers of coal have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analysis and test the character and quality of the coal they purchase. Higher prices for coal point forcibly to the need of giving more study to engine room and boiler room efficiencies and economies; this implies an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. Analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish data whereby power plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for technologic investigation of fuels and the analyzing and testing of fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 419 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1964 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/ Six previous publications have been made to present the results of 6,293 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1964. The year 1986 was not a good year for the world's mineral industry from several viewpoints. Levels of production, both of crude minerals and processed forms, registered declines in the cases of a greater number of commodities than the number that recorded increases. The overall value of world crude mineral production was estimated to have increased, but only very slightly in terms of constant dollars to nearly $997 billion. Although there were modest increases in the consumption of all major fuels and most major metals, the latter at least apparently resulted more from drawdowns of inventories than from increased production (fuel consumption increases did come from higher output levels), and consumption of most major fertilizer and chemical commodities (nitrogen, phosphate, and sulfur) were at lower levels than those in 1985. Prices for a number of mineral commodities declined, headed by the very substantial drop in world crude petroleum prices, but also including downturns for a number of metals and industrial minerals as well. There was insufficient information to reliably fix the level of the dollar value of world trade in minerals, for while output was up in the case of some large-volume materials such as iron ore, coal, and crude and refined petroleum, suggesting that the volume of trade in physical units may have increased, declining prices may well have offset quantitative gains.
