This study was a part of two programs: The first, to develop and evaluate high-temperature refractories; the second, to investigate reaction-rate kinetics and phase equilibria in the sinter step of the lime-soda process for the recovery of alumina. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques are to be used extensively in both programs. This paper summarizes developments in the field of high-temperature X-ray diffractometers through 1959, evaluates various furnace designs, and describes briefly the X-ray diffraction facilities of the Federal Bureau of Mines. A more detailed description of the equipment and its calibration is planned in a future paper on thermal expansion and phase inversion of rare-earth oxides.

Recrystallization studies on chrome-bearing spinel materials were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effects of certain fluxing agents and cooling rates on the chromium-to-iron ratio of recrystallized spinel. Statistically designed and evaluated tests showed that the ratio of chromium to iron in naturally occurring chrome spinel could be increased from 1.5 to 1 to over 7 to 1 and that the ratio of chromium to iron in the chrome-spinel in a stain-less steel slag could be raised to over 18 to 1. Silica, magnesia, and lime had significant positive effects, while alumina had a significant negative effect. Cooling rates of 200 C per hour in a programmed spiral globar electric furnace were satisfactory for growing crystals of recoverable size.

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.

"Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM. These data indicate that PAF can affect the secretory activity of pulmonary phagocytes and the ability• of type II cells to detoxify foreign compounds (Bureau of Mines Grant - G1175142).INTRODUCTIONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acetylsn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to Mediate a broad range of biological activities (1-3). Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue (4), secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytes (5), airway constriction (6), pulmonary edema (7), and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (8,9).PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin (10-13). Therefore, PAP may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of PAF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type II epithelial cells."

A study of the production of coronene , a high - melting ( 440 ° C ) , highboiling ( 525 ° C) , polynuclear hydrocarbon , was made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the maximum yield obtainable by the hydrogenation of coal and coalderived materials . Experiments were made with anthracite and bituminous coals and with asphaltenes and centrifuged residue obtained from heavy oil produced in a pilot plant by the hydrogenation of a bituminous coal at 2,000 psi and 480 ° C. With anthracite , yields of coronene of 0.5 to 0.7 wt pct of moistureand ash - free coal were obtained at 6,000 to 8,000 psi , 700 ° to 750 ° C , and a residence time of 30 minutes . With bituminous coal , yields averaging 0.4 wt pct of maf coal were obtained at 6,000 psi , 800 ° C , and 30 minutes ' residence time . With asphaltene and centrifuged residue , yields of less than 0.02 wt pct of maf coal were obtained at 6,000 psi , 700 ° C , and 60 minutes ' residence time .

The Bureau of Mines, as a part of its goal to minimize occupational hazards associated with mining and mineral processing operations, has developed and field tested a compact exhaust air muffler for mechanized, jumbo-mounted pneumatic rock drills. The muffler is constructed of 1/8-inch sheet steel and has nominal dimensions of 1-3/4 by 9 by 13 inches. A directed air passage, flexible neoprene baffles, and an expandable slit-type outlet are incorporated to reduce drill exhaust air noise and eliminate muffler icing. Field tests in actual mining operations showed a l5-dbA reduction in exhaust noise and an 8-to 12-dbA reduction in overall drilling noise with no icing problems or decrease in drill performance. Data are presented on muffler construction, laboratory, and field test results.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous selective flotation tests of barite-fluorspar ores from two deposits near Marion, Ky., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade fluorspar and barite concentrates. The lignin sulfonate-sodium fluoride method of floating the fluorspar successfully produced acid-grade fluorspar concentrates. Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate collector yielded concentrates suitable for use in compounding oil-well drilling mud. The fluorspar and barite recoveries were about 82 and 85 percent, respectively.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the, "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams (2) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard" were consistent throughout their calibration. (3) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1.) This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was conducted chiefly on Cuban serpentine nickeliferous ores to determine whether these materials would be amenable to direct carbothermic reduction in an electric furnace to produce a low-carbon ferro-nickel. The project was carried out as one of several under a Memorandum of Agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the General Services Administration (Contract GS-OO-B (D)-152l). Two ore samples were received for this investigation. One was a mixture of nickeliferous serpentine from the North Ocujal, South Ocujal, and San Juan claims of the Nicaro Nickel Co. The other sample was a mixture of material from the Ramona and the Lorna Mulo claims of the Cuban Nickel Co. Most of the ore from the Ocujal-San Juan deposits and about 40 percent of the sample from the Ramona-Lorna Mulo deposits were calcined before smelting. The remainder of the sample from the Ramona-Loma Mulo deposits was smelted after drying to about 8 percent moisture. An arc-resistance, selective-reduction smelting technique was employed in these tests. Either bagasse alone or a mixture of bagasse and coke was used for reductants. No flux was used in the furnace charges.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews published information on synthetic berlinite (AlP04) and suggests experimental conditions requisite for its production. Berlinite is a piezoelectric material with potential use as a substitute for quartz in the crystal oscillators, which are components of electronic and electroacoustic equipment. Information gathered here (mostly from published sources) includes historical background, physical properties, end-use applications, criteria of quality, and physio-chemical factors involved in berlinite crystal growth. It is concluded that growing large high-quality berlinite crystal would require high-purity starting materials in an autoclave equipped with a noncorrodible liner and operated with temperature control of ±O.OO5 ac over a range of 250 to 350 ac.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of its goal of helping maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic A needs, is evaluating alternative technologies to treat oxidized taconites. Since process control is an essential element in the application of these process technologies, research was performed on a prototype monitoring system utilizing a Californium-252 (252-Cf) neutron source and a thermal neutron capture-gamma ray spectra analysis method to measure the amount of iron and percent solids in process slurries. The prototype system was used to monitor the concentrate and tailing streams in a 900-lb/hr flotation pilot plant during continuous around-the-clock tests. The iron content of the process slurries was determined by measuring the total peak areas under the capture spectrum peaks at 7.626-7.632 MeV, the associated escape peaks at 7.136-7.122 and 6.626-6.612 MeV, and the iron doublets at 4.900 and 4.998 MeV. A potential method for determining the percent solids in process slurries using the 2.22 MeV hydrogen capture peak is discussed. Results of this work demonstrate a potential method for providing process control parameters using the data from thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reactions.

"Stable coal radicals (SCRs) were detected by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners. The SCR concentrations were measured in the lung tissues from 98 coal miners with and without (a) coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), (b) cancer, and (c) a history of cigarette smoking. Concentrations of SCRs were also determined in the lungs of nonminer controls. The SCR concentration was related to longer mining tenure, CWP disease severity, lung cancer, and cigarette smoking. The mean concentration of SCRs in the lung tissues of miners with 30 ± 1.4 y of coal mining exposure was 5.3 ± 1.3 x 10"" spins/g versus controls who had a nondetec¬table level (< 10 15 spins/g). An increase in disease severity was accompanied by a progressive increase in SCR concentration. A SCR concentration of 4.8 ± 0.7 x 10"" spins/g was found for simple CWP (with moderate coal macules) versus 7.8 ± 4.6 spins/g lung tissue for complicated CWP (with progressive massive fibrosis). Significantly higher (i.e., 10 x 10"") concentrations of SCR in the coal miners' lung tissues were associated with an exposure history in the anthracite regions of northeastern Pennsylvania. These results in¬dicate a possible role for SCRs in the disease process. Furthermore, ESR appears to be an adequate methodology for the quantitation of coal dust retained in the lung and for distinguishing exposures to anthracite and/or bituminous coal.THE PREVALENCE AND SEVERITY of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly between geographic locations, mines, and coal fields irrespective of comparable levels of exposure to coal mine dust These differences cannot be fully explained by the presence of silica and other minerals in the coal mine dust.' Rank of coal is also an important factor in the pathogenesis of CWP. Equally important is that the prevalence of CWP decreases from east to west in the United States,' and South Wales miners develop more severe CWP than miners in Scotland.' However, there are conflicting reports that cast uncertainty on the influence of rank of coal in the development of CWP."" These problems are complicated but will be solved as new technology emerges and as more is learned about the disease process."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research into computer-assisted mining, which requires investigation of new techniques for development and application of computer-based technologies. Today&apos;s technology can require significant effort in software development, as has become evident in the early stages of this Bureau research. Technologies for software automation, such as computer-aided software engineering (CASE), are available. This report explores CASE, its general features, and its importance in software development. Information is presented to assist in selection and application of the variety of CASE tools and methods for automating various stages of software development. When evaluating CASE for use, it is important to examine tools that support an organization&apos;s existing methods of software development. Support for existing hardware platforms must also be examined. Merely selecting a "good" CASE tool does not insure success. Thorough evaluation of implementing CASE is also critical. Subjects to evaluate for CASE implementation include organization culture, support from management and end users, training resources, and pilot projects. Organizations that benefit the most from CASE evaluate CASE features with respect to their needs and they properly implement CASE.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a study conducted to determine the relationship of mineral habit to particle size and shape characteristics for prismatic, acicular, fibrous, and asbestiform varieties of tremolite. Particle measurements were made with the petrographic microscope at X 1,250 and the scanning electron microscope at magnifications up to X 10,000. All of the varieties of tremolite, upon Wiley milling, produced a significant percentage of particles that meet the Federal regulatory criteria for counting as asbestos fibers. However, only the asbestiform variety gave milled particles that fell into a size range of >10 µm in length and <0.5 µm in width; some medical scientists consider this range significant for production of adverse health effects.

Water classification and heavy-media sink-float methods were investigated for concentrating metallic junk automobile shredder rejects initially upgraded to about 75-percent metal content in an air elutriation system. An 8-inch-diameter water elutriation column with a feed capacity of 2.7 tons per hour was constructed and operated. The results obtained were compared with those produced by sink-float methods. Tests made on duplicate samples of an intermediate-grade metal product were successful in upgrading the metal con-tent from 75 percent to 98.7 and 99.1 percent with respective recoveries of 95.5 and 98.9 percent for the water classification and sink-float procedures. Tentative flowsheets for treating junk auto shredder rejects are outlined.

"IntroductionAir sampling for airborne contaminants requires a system for moving air, a collection method, and a procedure to determine the quantity of contaminant collected. Because occupational exposure limits and air quality standards frequently are expressed in terms of concentrations, a method of determining the volume of air sampled is also needed. The four principal components in a sampling train are shown in Figure 12-1. The inlet admits the air sample into the train; the collector(s) separates the gas, vapor, or particles from the air; the flowmeter measures the rate or total quantity of air sampled; and the pump (air mover) provides the suction required to draw an air sample through the train. Inlet sampling considerations are discussed in Chapter 21. Various types of collectors are described in subsequent chapters. Flowmeters are discussed in Chapter 7.This chapter will describe the air mover portion of the sampling train and air sampling systems that contain three or four components in a convenient package. The chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains a brief description of the different types of air movers and air sampling systems. The second part consists of tables and figures showing detailed information on a wide variety of commercially available air movers and sampling systems. ient size is filled with a liquid in which the suspected contaminant is insoluble. When the liquid is allowed to escape from the vessel, it is replaced by air from the atmosphere to be sampled. Such an air sample is an integrated sample rather than an instantaneous sample because the mass of fluid requires a finite time to empty. In fact, by employing a large vessel with controlled drainage, this method can be used to move air at low flow rates through a sample collector for extended intervals. On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and. investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite.4/ Appropriations were made in July 19 7, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typical subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series of tests in the standard. Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncoking coal was the first one of its rank that had been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall temperatures ranging from 500°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products are collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties are then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal. During the last 10 years approximately 50 representative American coals have been tested in the Bureau of Mines equipment. The results on the first 30 coals and a complete description of the test procedure are contained in a joint publication of the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association.7/ The remaining twenty coals have been reported in Bureau of Mines reports as Technical Papers and Bulletins.

The wolframite mineral series was studied to determine the effect of the FeO - MnO ratio on unit cell symmetry and thermal stability. This work was undertaken to evaluate the analytical procedures now in use for wolframite in scheelite and to aid in the development of improved methods of analysis. Wolframite grains were hand-picked, crushed, and screened; impurities were removed by selective magnetic separations using a Frantz isodynamic separator. The samples were further checked by optical spectroscopic and microscopic examination.
