Experimental work is report on the gasification of 90-percent through 200-mesh, strongly coking Sewickley-bed coal with oxygen and with steam in three temperature ranges, namely, 2,700° to 3,400° F., 1,600° to 2,000° F., and 230° to 250° F. Thirty-one runs have been made, during which 56,000 pounds of coal have been charged to the generator at feed rates of 200 to 450 pounds of coal per hour. The average results, not the optimum results, are given in the following tabulation:

This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . The object of the research described in this paper was to investigate the effect of metallurgical and surface treatments on the corrosion behavior of arc-melted reactor-grade zirconium in cupric or ferric chloride solutions. An apparatus was constructed and specimens of various metallurgical conditions and surface treatments were tested for 6 days at 35° C., with aeration. Some correlations were observed between corrosion rate and the metal's condition and treatment, Specifically, the unattacked or least attacked specimens were those that had been etched as a final treatment before testing. The most severely attacked specimens were those that had been vacuum-annealed as a final treatment before testing. The moderately attacked specimens were those neither vacuum-annealed nor etched, but having a final surface treatment which left a cold-worked surface. Attack by cupric and ferric chloride was by pit- ting with no preference for grain boundaries, The corrosion scale was cow posed predominately of very fine zirconim particles, Particles from the FeC1,-corroded specimens were more pyrophoric than those from CuCl2-corroded specimens, and appeared to have a higher surface area to volume ratio. Comparison of results to those of previous investigators showed that at certain salt concentrations the more pure, reactor-grade zirconium was quite resistant to attack while the less pure, graphite-melted zirconium was severely attacked.

This report contains information on the relation between and precision or reproducibility of counts (light-and dark-field) of the dust in liquid from simultaneous impinger, midget-impinger, electric-precipitator, and filter-paper samples. The impinger was the main sampler used from about 1922 to 1939 by industrial hygienists in the United States for collecting samples of unhygienic dust from the atmospheric environment of workers. The midget-impinger, a small modification of the preceding impinger described in 1937, has been the sampler used most since about 1939. Electric precipitators5/6/ have been used to a limited extent, mainly by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory, for obtaining results comparable to impinger results. A filter-paper sampler for obtaining results comparable to impinger results has been described by Brown. All these samplers have a high collecting efficiency for particles larger than 1 micron in diameter revealed by the usual light-field counting procedure. However, their collecting efficiencies are quite variable for the smaller particles revealed by the dark-field counting procedure used in this study. Published information on the relation between the results of these samplers is limited and scattered. Summaries of some of this information are given in this report along with some previously unpublished information.

The Bureau of Mines has developed two experimental designs for deter- mining the volumes and relative proportions of the various gas species, particularly methane (CH4), occluded in rock salt. To date, the rock salt samples analyzed have been relatively small (400- to 1,000-gram) grab samples from Louisiana Gulf Coast domal salt mines. The results obtained are comparable to results in Polish domal salt mines, in terms of occluded gas volumes per mass of rock salt. The notable difference between the Louisiana and Polish occluded gas mixtures is in the relative proportions of the individual gas species. The two methods used by the Bureau are ballmill crushing and dissolution. Of the two, the dissolution method appears to be more versatile because it can be performed in situ. The relevance and applicability of data on the occluded gas contents of rock salt are dependent on sample size, sample collection method, geologic context of the sample, and the correlation with gas emissions that occur as a result of mining-induced fractures and pressure differentials.

Knott County is one of the smaller coal-producing areas in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. It contains numerous coal beds, many too thin to support mining over a wide area, Coal produced in the county is from a few rail-shipping operations and many small truck mines. Many smaller mines are working beds whose exact location in the coal-bearing strata is uncertain. Samples were collected from 11 different coal beds, of which the Fire Clay, Hindman, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Flag are the most import ant from a product ion standpoint. Known reserves in the Hindman bed. are very limited, and almost the entire production from this bed is gathered from two comparatively, large rail-shipping mines in addition to the four principal beds, samples were taken in the Francis, Haddix, Fire Clay Rider, Whitesburg, Amburgy, Upper horn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. I .beds. Figure 1 is a typical section of the strata, showing the more important coal beds and. readily identifying their location with respect to each other. The bed names as shown are particularly important because of the local tendency to assign several names to the same bed. Costs of producing lead from various known resources in the United States are developed by the Bureau of Mines to define the future availability of domestic lead at various price levels. It is estimated that 60 million tons of primary lead (75 percent of the total resource) is available at $0.20 or less per pound; 72 million tons (90 percent of the total) is available at $0.50 or less per pound; and the 79 mil- lion ton total estimated resource can be obtained at a price or $1.82 or less per pound. The supply available at $0.20 per pound or less will meet demand for over 78 years at the 1970 annual consumption rate of 763,000 tons.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 151 natural gas samples from 19 States. Of the total samples, 138 were collected calendar year 1989. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases to were not received until 1989. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

This report presents the results of an initial investigation into some problems resulting from the use of assays representing unequal sample interval lengths and the use of the weighted average grade of ore in evaluating bedded mineral deposits . A mathematical proof and examples are given to show that the unweighted and weighted assay averages are equivalent when there is no correlation between assay value and sample interval length but that these averages are different when there is correlation between assay value and sample interval length . The amount of this difference between estimates is a function of the degree of correlation . One set of sample and assay data , based on 11 stratigraphic sections of the Phosphoria formation in Idaho , indicates that the relationship between the amount of difference between estimates and the correlation factor is approximately linear . If this correlation relationship can be established , within acceptable limits of precision , as a consistent attribute of deposits , the estimate of weighted average grade of ore could be predicted directly from the unweighted estimate of grade of ore by using the relationship as a prediction factor . Randomness tests on the sample and assay data from the Phosphoria formation , using the mean - square - successive - difference method , indicate that correlation between assay value and sample interval length ( each sample interval length represents an individual bed or stratum of the formation ) , apparently has little effect on the independence between successive assays , between successive sample interval lengths , and between the products of assays and sample interval lengths . Therefore , these data can be analyzed statistically as long as the original sample sections have been selected at random for sampling .

Oil yields, lithology, and stratigraphy have been evaluated for 15 cored wells and two sampled wells representing 10 square miles of the Tipton Member of the Green River Formation near Green River, Wyo. The area evaluated is being used by the Bureau of Mines for experimental production of oil from the oil shales in place. Lithology and oil yields were correlated to produce a stratigraphy diagram for the in situ study area, permitting precise designation of comparable sections. Because of lateral uniformity of oil shale, oil yields from eight cores and two sets of drill-cutting samples within a quarter section show the range of variation in average oil yield arising from experimental error. Variation in average oil yields from the seven cores representing the 10-square-mile study area lies within the expected experimental error. No difference in oil-shale richness across the study area is indicated. Average oil yields for three Tipton sections in the study area were deter-mined as follows: (1) The entire Tipton Member oil shale (about 145 feet thick), 13.3 gallons per ton; (2) the 40-foot upper rich zone, 21.0 gallons per ton; and (3) the 21-foot zone in which the Laramie Energy Research Center is conducting in situ experiments, 22.4 gallons per ton. One acre of the 21-foot experimental section represents 34,300 barrels of oil in place, and 1 acre of the Tipton's 40-foot rich upper layer represents 62,000 barrels.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential of in situ leach mining a variety of Cu, Mn, and Au-Ag ores. Geologic characterization of ore samples from laboratory leaching experiments is conducted both prior to and after leaching to assess the effects of leaching on the chemistry, mineralogy, and texture of the rocks. The identification and chemical compositions of ore, gangue, and reaction products are determined by a combination of techniques such as reflected and transmitted light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and backscattered electron imaging with scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of the desired metal in various mineral phases can be illustrated using elemental X-ray maps. The potential of reactive gangue minerals to rob Cu from leach solutions is investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Porosity and permeability are measured to determine how effectively the host rock can transmit leach solution. Textural relationships between ore, gangue, secondary reaction products, and fluid channelways are determined by petrographic examination and are documented by optical photomicrographs and secondary electron imaging. Representative sample selection is described, and several epoxy impregnation and sample mounting techniques are discussed.

A degasification experiment was conducted in a Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed mine in Virginia. It involved (1) drilling holes in the coalbed in the out- side headings of a set of five being developed in virgin area, and (2) conducting a methane emission rate study as mining progressed and additional holes were drilled. Degasification from all drill holes except the longest in each of the outside headings and the first three drilled (excluding the in-situ pressure hole), was erratic and inconsequential in methane emission rates. The two longest holes liberated 66 and 79 cfm of methane, which is significant for the coalbed, but such quantity lasted a relatively short time; the first three were uniform but low in methane emission.

This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.

[In a certain application it was necessary to compute the incomplete beta function, ß(1/2, p, q), for a certain set of values of p and q. Since the set of p and q values was much more finely spaced than those in any published tables, the authors have decided to make their results available in this report. In connection with this application, the function ß(1/2, p, q) was needed at various points in the p, q plane at intervals of 0.05, 0.05 p = 2q < 10.00. Fletcher, Miller, and Rosenhead3/ state that the only tables available in the desired range are those of Pearson.4/ However, the interval used by Pearson was not small enough for the present application. For this reason, it was decided to calculate the function ß(1/2, p, q) for p = q = 0.05 (0.05) 10.00. This table is published because of the fundamental importance in mathematical analysis of the incomplete beta function.]
