This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report conveys the results of an economic analysis of minerals in the West Mojave Management Area (WMMA), including the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH), a proposed special land management area. Undiscovered mineral resources were estimated for the entire WMMA, which totals 8.7 million acres. Known mineral resources were studied for the DTPH, which is an area of 1.2 million acres contained within the WMMA. Federal lands within the WMMA are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The WMMA includes Federal, State, and private lands in the western portion of San Bernardino County and the eastern portion of Kern County. The center of the study area is 20 miles northwest of Barstow, California (Figures 1 and 2).

Native asphalt was produced in 1978-79 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output in-creased 37% in 1978 to 1.7 million tons and decreased 5% in 1979 to 1.6 million tons while value increased 39% in 1978 to $19.3 million and 33% in 1979 to $25.6 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

The vapor pressures of liquid molybdenum and liquid zirconium were determined by the Langmuir free-evaporation method. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. The vapor-pressure data led to the following equations: [log p (atm) = 5.429 - 28,380 T for liquid molybdenum in the range 2,890° to 2,990° K, and log p (atm) = 6.521 - 30,940 T for liquid zirconium in the range 2,229° to 2,795° K.] Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 157.6 ± 1.8 kcal/mole and 148.4 ± 2.4 kcal/mole for molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, where the uncertainties are two standard devia¬tions. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and tabulated enthalpies were 143.5 ± 2.7 kcal/mole and 149.2 ± 3.8 kcal/mole for molybdenum and zirconium, respectively. The better agreement in heats of sublimation for zirconium is attributed to the 566° K temperature range studied which permitted a more accurate definition of the vapor pressure curve than could be obtained from the 100° K span for molybdenum. This supposition was verified by making a sigma-prime plot which utilized solid vapor pressure data for molybdenum to extend the evaluation range by 800° K. This gave a standard heat of sublimation of 155.2 ± 1.6 kcal/mole which is in good agree¬ment with the third-law value. The plot also gave a standard entropy of sublimation (298.15° K) of 35.73 ± 0.48 eu.

A separator for minerals of low magnetic susceptibility and fine particle size in a water suspension is described. A ring-shaped matrix of ferromagnetic fragments rotating so as to pass successively through magnetic-field and field-free regions provides for the separation. Application is illustrated in the separation of hematite and ilmenite from quartz.

The chapter will also help if your dust control problem doesn’t fit any of the circumstances described in later chapters. ] This chapter describes the three major control methods used to reduce airborne dust in tunnels and underground mines: ventilation, water, and dust collectors. It also describes methods to reduce the generation of dust, so less has to be removed from the mine air. The ventilation methods provide the best use of air in the vicinity of workers and in the vicinity of dust sources. In this sense, the methods described are local ventilation methods. Most of the emphasis is on so-called displacement ventilation because it is the most effective dust control technique available. The section on water sprays outlines the dual role of sprays—wetting and airborne capture—and describes why wetting is more important. It also corrects some of the misconceptions about spray effectiveness and describes circumstances where sprays can actually increase the dust exposure of workers. The section on dust collectors outlines the circumstances under which dust collectors can be expected to function effectively. It also describes some common design and maintenance problems. The final section describes how to reduce the amount of dust that gets into the air in the first place, since once the dust is airborne it is always harder to control.

Several laboratory flotation tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a sample of unweathered diorite from the B. F. Camden property, Amherst County, Va. Results showed that an ilmenite concentrate analyzing 45.5 percent Ti02 (titania), 0.07 percent P205 (phosphorus pentoxide), and 2.21 percent Si02 (silicon dioxide) could be produced from a feed containing 7.72 percent Ti02 and 3.94 percent P205. Ti02 recovery in the concentrate was 47.6 percent in a batch test. The weathered saprolite material overlying the diorite required scrubbing and desliming to remove argillaceous material and preliminary flotation of apatite followed by flotation of ilmenite. The resulting concentrate analyzed 47.3 percent Ti02, 0.19 percent P205, and 0.99 percent Si02 from a starting feed of 8.99 percent Ti02 and 3.37 percent P205; TiO2 recovery was 54.5 percent.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the occurrence and recovery of by-product heavy minerals from sand and gravel operations as a means of assessing the Nation's resources. Sand samples from 63 locations in central and southern California were treated to yield heavy-mineral concentrates. The mineral compositions of the concentrates were characterized by chemical and mineralogical examinations. Additional large quantities of concentrates were prepared from selected deposits that contained significant quantities. Beneficiation studies were performed on these concentrates to recover individual mineral products. Gold was recovered by amalgamation; platinum-group metals and radioactive minerals by flotation; magnetite, ilmenite, and chromite by magnetic and high-tension separation techniques.

The Bureau of Mines developed two methods for determining iron II and iron III in 2- to 5-mg samples of coal using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometry. One method used solid coal samples; the other method used aqueous solutions. The method using solid samples was more simple, technically, but required the use of X-ray fluorescent analysis, or another independent method, for determining total iron in the samples, and the results were subject to some uncertainty. The method using aqueous solutions appeared capable of greater certainty and did not require additional methods of total iron analysis but was more involved procedurally. The coals analyzed were found to contain much more iron II than iron III.

Roof screening for ground control originated with metal miners in the western United States. At first chain-link fence was used, but because it was so difficult to handle, the miners started installing a more rigid welded wire screen used in the concrete industry. Eventually coal mines in the west began to use screen, and now more and more coal operations, especially longwall mines, are installing roof screen on a regular basis. Screen use has recently increased in the Illinois basin and is now making its way to underground coal mines in the eastern U.S.

Application of the in situ recovery process to oil shale was tested during two field experiments near Rock Springs, Wyo. The results of these tests demonstrate that a self-sustaining combustion zone can be created in an oil shale body, that this zone can be moved through the oil shale, and that the process will produce shale oil. Evaluation of the combustion process by monitoring produced fluids for physical and chemical properties and volumes is described. The material and energy balance obtained is compared with a second evaluation based on extensive coring of the test area after the test was terminated. Several side results of the research are noted such as ground surface heating by underground burning and production of low-to medium-Btu gas during retorting.

"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating those materials-handling tasks in underground mines that appear to generate a high number of injuries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration for the years 1989-1999 were studied to find out if there were any trends in materials-handling accidents and if so, to determine what tasks were involved and the sources of injuries. Several underground coal and metal mines we revisited to document innovative materials-handling technologies. Considerations for safety training and mechanization needs for continued reduction in materials-handling injuries are described.

A solvent extraction procedure using 8-hydroxyquinoline and chloroform was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a preconcentration technique for the determination of aluminum, calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, nickel, and zinc in large samples of high purity tungsten. X-ray spectrographic and atomic absorption methods were used to determine the trace metals after preconcentration. The presence of 10 grams of tungsten had a pronounced effect on the distribution of 8-hydroxyquinoline between the aqueous and chloroform phases. This change in the 8-hydroxyquinoline distribution in turn had an adverse effect on the extraction of the trace metals. Extraction efficiencies can also be adversely affected by an increase in the quantity of extractable metals present, as shown by radiotracer tests using 65Zn. Excess 8-hydroxyquinoline in the extracts did not interfere with the determination -of the serious interference in the combined ion exchange paper--X-ray spectrographic method. Although preconcentration by 8-hydroxyquinoline extraction was found to be partially successful, other preconcentrationn methods based on ion exchange and dithizone extraction were found to be superior.

This part of the final report treats some problems related to coal mine carrier frequency communication systems using the trolley wire/track transmission line. This work was undertaken for a brief period of time during the summer of 1972 to help understand, quantify, and improve some of the trolley wire carrier system behavior observed and/or predicted. Calculations and estimates of transmission line characteristic impedance, inductance and capacitance per unit length, mine motor loading effects, parallel line effects, and connection impedances are presented in Chapter I. Chapter II treats the design of r-f isolators for reducing the undesired and troublesome r-f loading that mine motors present to the trolley transmission line. Radiotracer techniques were developed for stoichiometric studies of photochemical reactions associated with atmospheric smog formation. Stock blends of separate hydrocarbon and oxygenated compounds were prepared and calibrated. 14C-labeled reactants and products in reaction systems involving hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides at the ppm level were analyzed for qualitative and quantitative data. Precision and accuracy of these methods developed by the Bureau were determined by replication and statistical treatment of data, and these methods are described.

The Bureau of Mines devised a direct flotation method for recovering potash from carnallite (KC1?MgC12?6H20) ore characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The method includes (1) a decomposition leach of the carnallite, (2) flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes, (3) potash rougher, cleaner, and recleaner flotation, and (4) final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity for removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation de-sliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumption. Locked-cycle testing of the direct flotation method recovered 87.8 pct of the potassium in the flotation feed in a final product containing 60.6 pct K20. A flowsheet incorporating the carnallite leaching-potash flotation procedure is presented.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research to determine the effects of a barium-based fuel additive on diesel particulate emissions. The test engine was typical of types used to power underground coal min-ing equipment. Test parameters consisted of baseline measurements without additive, three fuel additive concentrations, and five steady-state engine loads, all at 1,200 r/min. Additive effects on soot mass concen-tration, opacity, particle size distribution, volatile fraction, and NOx emissions were determined. Important findings are as follows: Using the manufacturer's recom-mended additive concentration increased the gravimetrically measured mass of particulate by 30 to 80 pct at four of the five steady-state load conditions. Soot measurements by optical methods did not agree with those by gravimetric techniques, for additive-treated fuels. The additive reduced volatile hydrocarbons adsorbed on filter deposits by up to 50 pet. At most engine loads, carbon particulate was also reduced. About 40 pet of the barium added to the fuel was accounted for in the exhaust. The health implications for miners were considered, but no firm conclusions were drawn or recommendations made because the results are for steady-state conditions, which may not be representative of real-world operation of diesel-powered equipment underground.

The applicability of the "direct method" for determining the methane content of virgin coalbeds was tested. Preliminary results indicate that the direct method, when applied to exploration cores, can be successfully used to estimate coalbed gas content and also approximately predict the total gas emission from a prospective mine located in the coalbed at the exploration site.
