The Bureau of Mines drilled Wyoming Corehole No. 1 in Sweetwater County, Wyo., to sample Green River Formation oil shale. Core obtained was assayed for oil yield to determine richness and stratigraphic distribution of oil shale in the deposit. Oil shale in place at Wyoming No. 1 site represents over 200 million barrels of oil per square mile. Additional data useful in evaluating the deposit, including generalized stratigraphy and mineralogy, detailed lithologic descriptions of the core, rock specific gravity, and bore-hole logs, are presented with the oil-yield data. The sampled Wyoming oil shale resembles Mahogany-zone oil shale in rock properties and gross mineralogy. A statistically derived equation relating shale density to oil yield for the Wyoming deposit compares with a similar relationship valid for the better known Mahogany-zone oil shales in Colorado and Utah. A density log from Wyoming Corehole No. 1 is calibrated for direct oil-yield logging. The alternating rich and lean beds of shale at this site may permit creating the permeability necessary for direct production of shale oil from the shale in place.

Until man was able to produce light, his working day was pretty much limited to daylight hours. Underground miners have a special problem because in a mine it is just as dark during daytime as it is at night. The first devices used for mine lighting were torches and open flame 011 lamps. Torches made from twisted grass and dipped in tallow or pine pitch would burn for a while, but they made a lot of smoke and probably went out when they were needed most. During the 15001s, miners lamps consisted of a small metal dish with a hook attached to hang it up. The saucer-shaped dish was filled with animal or fish oil and a wick made of twisted fibers was laid In the 011 and hung over one edge where it would burn. This lamp would burn longer than a torch, but the amount of light cast by the pale, flickering flame was probably only a little better than no light at all.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

The principal procedures for the statistical analysis of gold assay and other trace-element data depend on applying either the normal frequency distribution or the lognormal frequency distribution. The consequences of applying both methods are examined through reference to example data from United States and South African gold mines. It is concluded that for estimation of average grades, except for certain data with a very high coefficient of variation (ratio of standard deviation to mean), use of the lognormal distribution is ordinarily undesirable because bias may be introduced and little efficiency can be gained. However, if biased average grades can be tolerated, as in the examination of data from surveys in exploration geochemistry, use of the log-normal distribution may be desirable. Various statistical analyses are detailed, and the tables presented to implement the analyses are more complete than those previously published.

Two examples of en echelon mining-induced fractures seen in hard-rock mines provided a basis for inferring that fracture zones and bedding plane separations immediately surrounding mine openings are promoted by oblique shear into the openings. It is hypothesized that initial fractures or separations form at the corners of openings as a result of high stress and physical constraint on the rock's ability to deform elastically toward the opening. These conditions result in a locally preferred direction of shearing. The shearing, in turn, generates tensile stress that initiates a progression of systematically offset fractures approximately parallel to the direction of greatest compressive stress. The fractures or bedding separations create tabular rock layers that amplify shearing displacement through bending and dilation. Such shearing effectively reduces and redistributes the compressive stress, but significant dilation is an inevitable consequence. The combination of dilation and shearing and the progressive development of fracture zones have important implications with respect to ground support. The concept of mining-induced fractures forming as a result of shear is illustrated by two examples from coal mines. First, fractures seen at longwall faces probably result from shear associated with subsidence. The fracture zone that develops approximates or possibly defines the draw angle of subsidence. As the face advances, fractures extend downward along the lower edge of the fracture zone, while upper extensions of the fractures are pressed closed. Fracture zones in entry roofs provide a second practical example. Here, mining-induced fractures typically follow bedding planes. The shear zone model suggests that the first bedding separations develop near the edges of the roof and successive separations progress upward and toward the center. However, if the direction of greatest stress is inclined with respect to the roof, a fracture or bedding separation zone may propagate from one side only and also extend higher. Because coal ahead of the face provides some support against lateral shear deformation, bedding separation is inhibited near the face. Rock bolts installed close to the face ultimately become more strained and bent than bolts installed a few meters from the face, and bolts installed through the more remote part of a separation zone may ultimately experience the greatest tensile and bending strains. This model is supported by field data documenting progressive bolt failures that rapidly propagated downward across the roof during face advance.

In August 1943 the Bureau of Mines completed seven churn-drill holes in an area of old mine workings near Linden, Wis., formerly known as the Argall mine. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc and lead producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort was being made to increase the production of metals necessary for war. The area was selected for investigation on the basis of its favorable geologic structure, past history, and apparent mineralization.

"INTRODUCTION The Bozeman corundum deposit was first examined in May 1944 by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. In August 1944, the property was re-examined because of a sharply increased war demand for corundum. A small program of trench exploring was undertaken after the second examination. The work was started in October 1944 and was completed in December 1944. This report presents the essential data obtained by the exploratory work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that, they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploration work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines has recently conducted tests on two tailings from black sand which had been treated previously at the Station. The results of this previous treatment have be on given in a paper entitled "Recovery of Gold from Black Sand by Classifier Concentration." The gold in these tailings was intimately united with quartz, and was so finely divided that it could not be detected with the naked eye, nor even by P&nn ing unless the material was ground. Its fineness is further shown by the assºy result, which reported only lz per cent of the gold content as "metallics", Wºorea's the assay of the original sand reported 36 per cent of the gold as "metallics." The fact that the gold was in such fine particles, closely united with quartz, precluded further recovery by amalgamation without grinding. On the other hand, the small content present, as well as the lack of grinding appliances at the placer mines of Alasia, made it necessary that the material be cheaply handled if at all. With these facts in mind the experiments described below were undertake.n.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for front-end loaders. Approach Automatic fire sensing and suppression systems were developed and ruggedized for use on front-end loaders operating in harsh mine environments. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted in the loader's engine, transmission, and articulation areas detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. This triggers the release of the ABC class dry chemical extinguishing agent through a fixed piping system onto the fire. The system can also be manually activated from either the cab or ground level. Locations of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing. Two control subsystems were designed to respond to varying fire protection needs and mine conditions. One subsystem only initiates discharge of the extinguishing agent. The other subsystem initiates visual and audible operator alarms if there is a fire sensed or if there is a fault in the control circuit.

Fiber optic systems are being deployed in locations where explosive gas atmospheres are normally present or are present under fault conditions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH, PRL) conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers conducted experiments to estimate the mean and standard deviation of laser powers needed to ignite 6% methane-air atmospheres using single mode optical fiber tips covered by two types of iron oxide (Fe304 and (FeMn)203) mixed with a ceramic adhesive. The iron oxides, heated by a 1064 nm continuous wave laser, ignited the methane-air mixtures ,at similar powers. The minimum igniting power and maximum non-igniting power (10 tests) were 407 and 350 mW, respectively, using a 62.5 pm fiber. Laser beams guided by 125 and 80 pm diameter cladding single mode fibers produced similar methane-air igniting powers. Ignition was not observed using coal particles at powers that produced ignition with the iron oxides. Threshold ignition delays using the single mode fiber were approxinlately proportional to the inverse square of the igniting power. Ignition delays were significantly longer than the reported activation time for a comnlercial fiber optic power limiter. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. The Bureau of Mines investigated (1) the effect of torsion on yield and ultimate strengths of bolts when the torsion is applied first and tensile load is applied independently of torsion and (2) various methods of increasing the tension-torque ratio and/or narrowing the data spread of the tension-torque relationship. A special torsional attachment was fabricated to attach to a universal testing machine to independently subject rock bolts to combined tensile and torsional loads. It was found that initially installed torsion is nullified during tensile loading and the tensile yield and ultimate strengths are not significantly reduced. Lubricating various components of a bolt assembly or using hardened washers will improve the tension-torque relationship during conventional installation; however, the torsional load is not nullified during this type of loading. Hence, a bolt is subjected to a combined stress throughout the loading cycle; the yield point will thus be lowered compared with the pure tensile yield if care is not taken during installation to stay below the torsional yield.

5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

"The Old Cline mine, also known as the Old Cruse mine, was first worked for gold in1895. The property was opened by several shafts and trenches; and some stoping has been done, producing several cars of copper-gold ore in the early nineteen hundreds. Chalcopyrite is visible in selected samples; and, with the aid of a mineralite, several samples showing a considerable amount of scheelite were found on the old waste dumps.The mine is in Township 6, Cabarrus County, N. C., 5 miles north of the village of Mount Pleasant, 10 miles northeast of Concord, and about one-half mile south of Watts Crossroads. It is one-fourth mile east of the county road.When examined, the property was owned by H. F. Tompkinson, Concord, N. C., and was leased, with option to buy, by L. Nash. Titles of record were not investigated.As stated above, the Cline mine was first worked in 1895. The property was Purchased in 1902 by J. A. Clark and A. A. Smith of Atlanta, Ga., and worked for gold and copper. No record is available of the quantity of ore removed during these operations.A Bureau of Mines mining engineer3/ examined the mine as, a copper prospect on October 13, 1944.The Cline mine is in an area characterized by flat to rolling topography, dissected by many streams and rivers. It lies in the Piedmont Plateau and Varies in elevation from 700 feet to 800 feet. The surrounding country is partly wooded and partly cleared farm land.A quartz vein occurs in country rock of quartzite and greenstone.4./ The ore occurs in a series of quartz lenses, having a width of 1 to 3 feet and dipping about 750 NE, and striking N. 300 W. All these lenses have fairly sharp boundaries and in some cases are entirely separated from each other, while at other times they are connected by thin stringers of quartz. They can be traced for 1,000 to 1,200 feet by a series of shafts and test pits."

From the most remote periods of civilization, stone Las been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns) or single markers to great obelisks and pyramid or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1050 at a cost estimated at a: high as $50,000,000, and it is today an object of unusual attraction for travelers. Other magnificent memorials, both ancient and modern, are to be found in many lands. Memorials of varying design have characterized the passing centuries and have found an important place in the New World. In early days, monuments were chiefly imported into America, but gradually an extensive memorial stone-manufacturing industry developed on this side of the Atlantic. Sales value of domestic memorials, f.o.b. quarry or mill, attained a maximum of $17,488,755 in 1920, and retail sales, of course, reached a much higher figure. Modest markers and tombstones are to be found in almost every rural community in the United States, and there are many elaborate and costly monuments in and near urban centers.

The principle of explosive crushing depends upon the fact that an expandable substance contained within the pores of a solid body will disrupt such a body upon expansion. Such expansion may be obtained by the detonation of an explosive or by the sudden release of pressure of a superheated liquid. That this principle of disruption may be applied to minerals rests on the fact that cracks, cleavage planes, and pores exist in all minerals to an extent hardly conceived possible heretofore. Crushing by this method takes advantage of forces applied from within the mineral rather than from forces applied from without. The application of a force from within would appear to be more effective.

Tritiated water has been used as a tracer to follow the path of leach liquids as they flow through a copper-mine dump. Semipermeable layers, produced within the dump by compaction and "stratification" of deposized dump material, restrict the vertical movement of water. Knowledge of this restriction would aid in the optimization of the leaching process. The portion of the dump of particular interest was approximately 2,000 feet long, 800 feet wide, and 200 feet high. A total of 94 curies of tritiated water was injected into the dump at the rate of 650 gpm over a period of 39 hours. The leach liquid was sampled at natural surface outflows and through a series of wells, some drilled to the bottom of the dump and others to intermediate levels. More than 3,300 samples were analyzed, most by liquid scintillation counting, but a few hundred by gas counting. Data obtained permitted calculation of flow paths, recycle times, total fluid volume, and estimates of retention times in various portions of the dump.

This report investigates the mechanical behavior of fine soils in a lunar environment in engineering gravity-flow bins. The ultrahigh vacuum, absence of moisture, and a lunar gravity one-sixth that of earth gravity represents a unique environment, both advantageous and detrimental to these systems. On earth, moisture and gases contained in powder masses can be responsible for complex descriptions of gravity flow. Their absence appear to simplify the lunar soil behavior. However, simulation of the lunar gravity and vacuum complicates the development of experimental data for designing bins. The properties of a dry soil powder, its behavior under one-dimensional compression, and its torsional and direct shearing strength under earth atmosphere are described in part 1 of this paper. These properties provide the parameters for a finite-element analysis to optimize the design of bins, to be described by Dr. William Pariseau in part 2. Shear tests assess the failure criteria for the material. Compression tests provide modulus and (Ko) stress-ratio values from the loading portion of the compression cycle, duplicating the condition of a bin at rest with the discharge closed. During the unloading portion of the compression cycle (soil overconsolidated), the residual Ko values rise. It is postulated that this phenomenon creates a high-lateral stress in bins when they approach incipient flow. Assessment of the Ko value, overconsolidation ratio, and the void ratio state is proposed as a criterion to determine the flowability of powder.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on 138 waterflood projects in Wyoming. Injection was in 25 producing zones and 65 fields. Specific data presented include field location, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. The 138 projects studied will, if successful, recover about 800 million barrels of secondary oil. Almost all of the injection water is from deep water wells.
