After the closure of collieries, they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between them and different hydraulic pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The collieries in the Witbank Coalfield have geometries such that there are several areas where this intermine flow is possible. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon is required. The challenges in determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention has focused on identification of areas where these flows can take place. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties in exact geometric configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic properties of thecoal and overlying lithilogical layers. During this study, use has been made of numerical flow modelling and several analytic solutions to test the applicability of the flow models as well as to predict groundwater flow directions, filling times of voids and flow volumes. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a downscaling approach starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines, and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction.

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

The high incidence of accidents and fatalities in the South African mining industry, in particular those associated with falls of ground, is often attributed to ineffective and/or inappropriate training methods and material. Recently introduced mine health and safety legislation in South Africa also requires that all mine workers receive appropriate and effective training to enable them to operate safely in their given mining environment. There can, therefore, be no doubt that methods to provide effective training, in particular safety related training, are urgently required in the South African mining industry. In the search for alternative and improved training approaches, attention has fallen on virtual reality (VR) technology as a possible solution. VR has found acceptance in a number of industries as an effective method of training for a variety of work place activities, including those of a safety related nature. VR has successfully been applied in a number of industries to improve the effectiveness of safety and hazard awareness training. The CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (CSIR Miningtek), in conjunction with the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), therefore evaluated the potential of VR to be used as a training medium in the South African gold and platinum mining industry. Aspects of the evaluation included an assessment of the technical capability of VR to represent a typical underground mining environment with sufficient realism and the relevance of the VR training concept for a largely illiterate workforce. For these purposes, a prototype PC-based VR hazard awareness training simulator has been developed by CSIR Miningtek, and a series of evaluation sessions conducted at a typical deep level gold mine. The conclusion from this evaluation work is that virtual reality technology has the potential to provide effective training systems that are relevant to the South African mining industry. In anticipation of the flooding of an adjacent dolomitic groundwater compartment, five rough parallel sided boundary plugs at 58 and 50levels have been designed to resist safely hydrostatic heads of 1500and 1250 metres, respectively, over a service life of 100 years. Following a description of the engineering properties of the surrounding rocks, the paper details the design considerations relating to structural length and strength, hydraulic gradient, rock mass watertightness, constituent materials of mortar intruded concrete, pregrouting of permeable discontinuities within the surrounding rock mass, a bentonite barrier to resist aggressive mine water, plug tightening and design performance requirements. Routine quality control tests include permeability of the rock mass, fluidity, bleed and strength development of the intruded mortar, and temperature of the intruded concrete during curing. A special test programme includes determination of strength and stiffness of cored concrete and rock samples, shear strength of the rock/plug interface and associated in situ contact stress in order toe stimate the load safety factor against plug failure by shear.

The nature of the density distribution in a gas-solid phase fluidized bed for dry coal separation is an important factor in influencing the performance. However, during coal processing, fine slime would mix with dense medium of magnetite powder and accumulate in the bed, and its influence will affect the density of the bed. The mathematical model of the density distribution with fine slime behaviour was studied in an experimental laboratory system. The functional relationship between the density of the air dense medium fluidized bed and the coal slime content were fitted, applying the principle of least-squares method with damping factors. With the model, by analysing the trial testing data, the mechanism of the density distribution of the bed was studied and applied to a coal separation test with a pilot scale separator. The leaching behaviour of nickel?copper matte in an acidic?copper sulphate solution during the repulping stage at Impala Platinum Refineries has been studied. The base metal recovery process consists of a matte repulping stage prior to a series of pressure leach stages. Therefore, the repulping stage is basically an atmospheric leach stage in which the matte containing mostly Niand Cu is leached in copper-spent electrolyte from the tank house, resulting in dissolution of nickel and precipitation of almost all the copper. To understand the nature of the leaching process during this stage of the operation, the effects of temperature stirring rate and matte particle size on the rate and extent of base metal dissolution and copper rejection from the solution have been investigated. The leaching mechanism of the matte in the investigated system is alsoproposed.

The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator?s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however, the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialized area of mechanized mining.

A single aggregate mix design was developed based on a slag/Portland binder blend and crusher sand. The primary design criterion, after performance, was the fluidity of the shotcrete and concrete product to ensure compatibility with existing manufacturing and shotcrete equipment as well as the pipeline transport system Cullinan Diamond Mine was investigating. Initial work had determined an optimum slag/Portland to aggregate ratio while retaining a water to slag/Portland binder ratio of approximately 0.4 to maintain the flowability of the product. A super-plasticizer was used to further increase the flowability of the product as opposed to increasing the water content. Finally a polypropylene reinforcement fibre was included in the wet shotcrete product to improve the energy absorption characteristics of the shotcrete. Previous work on the strength development of the slag/Portland based shotcretes and concretes suggests that strength class based on the EN 206 specification is C40/50 while the toughness classification based on the EFNARC plate test is c, or greater than 1000 joules1. Typically, Cullinan Diamond Mine wanted a shotcrete with a uniaxial compressive cube strength of 45 MPa and an energy absorption, based on the EFNARC plate test, in excess of 700 joules. This is an EN 206 strength class of C36/45 requiring a uniaxial compressive core strength of 30.5 MPa and a toughness classification of b1. In addition to the shotcrete development, Cullinan Diamond Mine required concrete products with a compressive strength range of between 25 and 60 Mpa for differing construction operations underground to be manufactured from the same mix design and raw materials as for the shotcrete. Finally, Cullinan Diamond Mine carries out extensive dry shotcrete operations and an investigation into the possibility of using the single aggregate mix design for dry shotcreting was also entered into. This paper presents data that indicates that, under the terms of reference, a wet and dry shotcrete and concrete product appears to be possible from a single aggregate less than 6.7 mm in size, and that a slag/Portland binder is suitable for use as the hydraulic binder in all the products, and that the necessary performance parameters of strength and energy absorption can be achieved.

Instability in rockpasses at deep levels often initiates as a result of stress induced fracturing of the rock on the walls of the pass. This may then progress to a stage at which the geological structure of the rock mass becomes dominant and permits large joint-defined blocks and slabs to become unstable. In this paper, a technique is described in which jointing parameters and their variabilities?orientations, spacings and lengths?are taken into account in estimating the extent of failure that may develop around a typical unsupported deep level gold mine rockpass. The results of this prediction are compared with the results obtained from a review of pass performance in the gold mining industry.

The gold concentration profiles which develop inside the activated carbon particles during the adsorption process were measured, so as to obtain additional direct proof of intra-particle mass transfer rate-control and to determine how individual carbon particles in a population vary in their gold uptake behaviour. The observed gold concentration profiles inside the activated carbon particles were typical of situations where an intra-particle mass transfer mechanism is rate-controlling. Gold di-cyanide penetrated the carbon particles with a wave-like front until it was uniformly distributed throughout the particle. This corresponds with the profiles predicted by the film and surface diffusion model. However, the rate with which gold di-cyanide was transported inside the individual carbon particles varied within the population of carbon particles. This variation was characterized by a lognormal distribution in surface diffusivity. Because the estimated variances of these surface diffusivity distributions were small, the dynamic adsorption behaviour of the carbons used in the present study did not deviate significantly from that predicted by a model based on film mass transfer and a single surface diffusivity. Van Deventer (1984, 1985 and 1986a) reported data that could not be adequately described by a model based on film mass transfer and a single surface diffusivity. In this study a model based on film mass transfer and a wide lognormal distribution of surface diffusivity values was applied to his data. It was shown that a population of carbon particles with a wide distribution in surface diffusivity values could offer an alternative explanation to the mechanism proposed by Van Deventer which was based on film mass transfer, with partitioning of the carbon into micro- and macropores with surface diffusion in the macropores and slow mass transfer into the micropores.

The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, whereas in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600?1000°C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed. For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidized bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidized bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

The purpose of the paper is to give an introduction to the concept of fatigue and its causes in the mining industry. By knowing the fundamental role it plays, together with its dynamics, can positively contribute to a mine?s safety management system. The difference between physical and psychological fatigue will be addressed with a possible range of causes that could trigger fatigue. There are two main sources of fatigue: firstly, work-related fatigue which is associated with activities at the workplace; and secondly non-work-related fatigue. The shared responsibility between the employer and employee is also discussed as it involves factors that occur both in and outside the workplace. Employers have the responsibility to manage fatigue through using a risk management approach. Employees have the responsibility to ensure they get enough sleep, take sufficient and regular nutrition, are healthy and physically fit and come to work fresh and alert. The impact of the implementation of a fatigue management plan and procedures has the potential to eliminate employee fatigue or its causes, reduce the likelihood of fatigue occurring in the workplace, and counteract the effects of fatigue when it occurs. Factors considered when implementing a fatigue management system include: extended hours of work, shift work, time of day and work design. Fatigue is one of the major role players (either causal or contributory) when it comes to causes of fatalities in the mining industry. Our main challenge in identifying whether fatigue played a role is the fact that it cannot be tested in post-mortems like drug or alcohol abuse. It is an aspect worth understanding and getting an organization sensitive to managing it properly to benefit both organizational as well as employee needs. "Platinum-based alloys are being developed with microstructures similar to nickel-based superalloys for potential high-temperature applications in aggressive environments. Since the chemistries of nickel and platinum are similar, Pt-based alloys can be made with gamma prime ~Pt3Al precipitates in a gamma (Pt) matrix. Currently, the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru system is one of the bases for developing Pt-based alloys, where Al allows the formation of thePt3Al precipitate and also gives protection from the alumina scale formed, Cr provides oxidation resistance and stabilization for the L12~Pt3Al phase, and Ru provides solid solution strengthening in the (Pt) matrix. Four Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V and two Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V-Nb alloys were made, with compositions based on a quaternary alloy, ~Pt82:Al12:Cr4:Ru2, which hadpreviously been identified as having optimum properties. Four of the as-cast alloys had the targeted two-phase structure of ~Pt3Al and (Pt), and two were single-phase ~Pt3Al. Vanadium partitioned more to (Pt) than to~Pt3Al. There was an improvement in hardness compared to the quaternary alloys. The best addition of V was ~15 at.%; higher additions resulted in brittle intermetallic phases of the Pt-V system. The effect of Nbcould not be ascertained because of its high losses."

This paper presents an overview of work conducted over several years to investigate the continuous stope closure profiles recorded in tabular excavations and the use of this data as a hazard indicator. In spite of the brittle nature of the rock, measurements in gold mines and intermediate depth platinum mines revealed a significant time-dependent closure component. Various approaches to simulate the time-dependent closure have been investigated. Viscoelastic theory is able to simulate the time-dependent closure behaviour, but there are subtle problems with the use of this theory as it cannot simulate the failure processes in the rock. To overcome these problems, continuum and discontinuum elasto-viscoplastic models were developed by the authors. Discontinuum models have the advantage of being able to simulate the creep behaviour of prominent discontinuities. Development of these models has led to useful insights into rock mass deformation and has made the numerical simulation of parameters, such as rate of mining, possible for the first time. A number of practical applications for the mining industry have been developed from this study. The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

Ash fusion temperature is the temperature at which the mineral matter in coal begins to soften, flow and fuse. It is an important parameter relating to coal utilization. Optimum ash fusion temperatures derived from coal in the Witbank Coalfield region are approximately 1400°C, and higher, although temperatures above1300°C may be deemed acceptable. This study attempted to determine which factors, mineralogical or inorganic-chemical, influence variations in the ash fusion temperatures in certain coals. Coal was sampled from the Number 2 coal seam at opencast and underground workings at New Clydesdale Colliery, Witbank Coalfield, South Africa. The samples represented known low and high ash fusion temperature coal. Analyses performed included proximate analyses, calorific value determination, percentage sulphur, ash fusion temperatures, ash analyses (composition of ash), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and petrographic studies. Results show that although a complex relationship exists between ash fusion temperature and the various geological and coal parameters, some positive correlative results were obtained. These indicate a possible relationship between low ash fusion temperatures and i) finer size fractions, ii) an increase in iron content present in the form of pyrite and iii) the form in which pyrite is present, namely cleats. High ash fusion temperatures tend to correlate with i) the absence of pyrite or ii) pyrite present as framboids.

The south west area of Cyprus has a long history of slope instability problems. The location and extent of these landslides has been influenced by ground morphology, geological structure and the presence of weak rocks and cohesive soils. The main triggering mechanisms have been precipitation and/or seismic events. Landslides have contributed to the decision to relocate villages and considerable efforts have been put into maintaining the integrity of the local transportation network. This paper uses a recent case study of road embankment failure near Pentalia in southwest Cyprus to review the available tools for the analysis of slope instability. It further demonstrates how the shear strength reduction technique can be used in a finite element analysis to better visualise the slope instability mechanism of a road embankment and provide a reliable tool in selecting appropriate remedial measures.

Data used for the analysis are actual plant data collected over the past two years of operation. Facts obtained from the study will be helpful for smelter management to control these components in the flash smelting furnace feed and slag, to levels which will enable better control of copper in slag, and smoother operation of the KCM slag-cleaning furnace.
