Wastewater treatment systems, both industrial and municipal, produce large quantities of sludge which require disposal. Sludge disposal poses significant environmental liabilities, logistical problems, and economic burdens. Minergy Corporation has developed and implemented several new technologies for the recycling of such high volume wastes as sludge, ash, and foundry sand. These technologies perform mineral recovery from the waste material, converting them into construction material and industrial feed stocks which are inert, marketable products. With a continuously operating processing system installed at the waste source, these technologies reduce handling, eliminate downstream liabilities, and reduce disposal costs.

A comparison study was conducted between an actual physical model and a numerical model based on the physical model of the block cave mining method. Results from the numerical analyses closely simulated the blocky behavior of the physical models, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The draw-down patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. An unexpected result from the numerical modeling was the development of a zone of downward deflection which preceded the development of the zone of material movement.

During the last 10 years there have been many new developments in transport and handling equipment. Important technical and economic developments that can be used to reduce costs are; new terminal and materials handling concepts large river tows - 40,000 tons and 9000 hp towboats slurry loading and unloading of ocean vessels long distance pipelining of solids development of the shuttle train (unit train) large ocean barges ? 25,000+ tons ? pushed & towed 150,000 ton self-unloading super tankers - 300,000+ tons container shipping Some of these developments have been discussed at SME meetings in papers describing the transportation of minerals from new mines. But, only a few papers described improved transportation from older operations. Since transportation is a major part of the delivered cost for minerals, the economic benefits to be gained by putting new transportation developments to work are very substantial. Frequently good transportation planning and management makes the difference between a marginal ore body and a very profitable one.

Two aromatic-type chelating agents, 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and 8-quinolinol (quin), were tested as specific depressants for magnetite in the cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates. Micro and batch flotation tests, along with zeta potential and adsorption measurements were used. In the presence of a cationic collector, dodecylammonium chloride (DAC), the Fe/phen surface chelate electro-statically repelled DAC, and magnetite was depressed. The negatively charged Fe(quin)2(OH)2-on the magnetite surface attracted the cationic collector and made magnetite floatable.

The Lyon Metro Line B with a length of 2.4 km is one of the strategic projects with regard to city planning and future mobility. The paper will highlight on this special area of application in singular diverse geology with sophisticated mechanized tunnelling technology.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

While probe drills are not strictly necessary for all projects, the incorporation and use of probe drills and pre-grouting adds capability and insurance to boring operations. Water ingress and unstable ground can be resolved before becoming a problem and resulting in costly delays through the use of enhanced, 360-degree probe drilling setups. To do this, proper design of the array of drill ports in the shield, matched to the possible ground conditions, is critical. For ground with exceptional water and instabilities expected, additional probing locations are low-cost additions that can lower risk and increase efficiency. In this paper we will look at recent and ongoing projects including the Lower Meramec Tunnel and Jefferson Barracks Phase 2. We will detail the design of those probe drill arrangements, and our overall recommendations for probing/grouting systems that best suit challenging ground conditions and keep projects running smoothly.

Three high performance TBM's equipped with large diameter (483mm) disc cutters are currently operating in Norway. This paper summarizes the design philosophy, field performance and ongoing technical development of these cutters. Included are discussions of the early problems encountered with their usage and the solutions to these problems that have been developed. Also included are discussions of the penetration rates and cutter usages observed. From this data it is concluded that high performance TBM's with large diameter cutters can produce significant improvements in both overall performance and in cutter costs under hard rock conditions.

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management has worked with the State of Montana and other agencies to identify and prioritize these sites on BLM administered lands. Following completion of the AML inventory work, the Bureau began an aggressive program to clean up priority sites. This presentation will highlight completed work as well as work in progress on several sites.

Construction of new installations was recently completed in the Port of Tubarao, Brazil, With this expansion the port, operated by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), has become the largest iron ore port in the world, with an annual throughput capacity of 60 million long tons. GROWTH OR IRON ORE EXPORTS Since its formation CVRD has steadily increased the shipment of iron ore to overseas markets. Starting with less than 100,000 tons in 1942, the yearly export volume grew to 1,500,000 tons in 1951, 5,000,000 tons in 1961 and 25,000,000 tons in 1971. The number of different grades of ore also increased during this period. Production of high grade pellets, starting in 1970, further increased the number of ore products to be shipped. In the same period the size of ore carriers increased twenty-fold to over 250,000 DWT.

Implementation of post-closure draindown estimates for tailings facilities are important predictive tools for reclamation planning and often influence jurisdictional bonding. Simplified estimates of draindown have been proposed in the past but these methods are not able to capture many of the site-specific nuances as well as operational and material parameters that influence robust draindown estimates. This paper discusses an iterative approach that relies on unsaturated flow models to predict draindown rates and associated pond inventory water balances that track inputs into underdrain pond systems, solution storage volumes, implementation of active evaporation, and necessary recirculation of solution back to the tailings facilities. Specific design criteria such as climate, facility geometry, material properties, and initial conditions, as well as active closure operational considerations that can influence draindown estimate will be discussed. Concepts presented will be valuable for operators, designers, and regulators to guide closure planning and predictive analytical analyses that support draindown estimates.

"Controlled recirculation may be considered as a beneficial means in mines of cold climate, where heating of air is required, and in deep or extensive mines, where cooling of air is required. Controlled recirculation can be designed by proper sizing of the booster fans with respect to main fan. Intuitively, it seems that the buildup of methane at the face will cease when a steady state condition is attained, and also that, at that same time, the maximum concentration at the face will remain same as in the return air. This supposition is proved by mathematical analysis that considers uniform mixing of methane in air in successive cycles of recirculation. This study includes two scenarios to show the effect of controlled recirculation on methane concentration in a sample network. Firstly, when recirculation crosscut exists near the working face; secondly, when recirculation crosscut exists away from the working face. The later scenario shows lesser buildup of methane concentration than the former one. INTRODUCTION The controlled recirculation is designed purposefully to allow a partial fraction of used air that increases the air velocity due to increased quantity of air and consequently allows effective dilution of contaminants to improve local ventilation condition at the working face. It can be designed by proper sizing of booster fan with respect to main fan in a ventilation network. Controlled recirculation may be categorized as crosscut, in-line or combined system based upon the configuration of the booster fan locations in a district ventilation network. Research on controlled recirculation has shown numerous benefits of controlled recirculation especially in deep or extensive underground mines, where further heating or cooling is required (Calizaya 1990; McPherson 1993 and Jones, 1987). "Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

An interlaboratory testing program was undertaken in support of an ASTM standardization program for simultaneous combustion-infrared analysis for carbon and sulfur in ores and related materials. Statistical analysis results from the study are used to generate the within-laboratory and between-laboratory precision data needed for standardization of the methods. The interlaboratory precision statistics are also interpreted to estimate the uncertainty in calculation of net carbonate value classifications using a simplified quantitative risk analysis technique.

Although I will briefly review the current status of coal slurry pipeline technology, I wish to make it clear that this is not a technical paper. It is intended instead to review the current situation on energy resources and requirements, and the environmental, political and economic considerations that mandate a serious consideration of Slurry pipelines as a viable mode of coal transportation into the Georgia and Florida markets. In order to more fully appreciate our current energy situation, it will be helpful to go back a few years and review the evolution of our so-called energy "problem." It was about two decades ago that the first and only major natural gas transmission pipeline was built into the State of Florida by Florida Gas Company. This line was conceived and implemented during a time when gas was plentiful and cheap, and it appeared at that time that unlimited gas reserves were continually being discovered, thus assuring the availability of a clean, cheap fuel and the ,viability of the pipeline system. One of the major factors justifying the original pipeline construction as well as subsequent expansions was a series of long-term commitments under which Florida Gas transported natural gas owned by electric utilities for use as boiler fuel. Thus for the past 20 years Florida industry, commerce, and domestic fuel requirements have been met either directly or indirectly through clean, cheap natural gas which would not have been otherwise available without the pipeline system.

"In March 2013, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County began final design of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel project. The new, approximately 7-mile, 18-ft internal diameter tunnel will provide additional capacity and redundancy for the existing 8- and 12-foot diameter tunnels, which were built in 1937 and 1958, respectively. Connections to an existing, active 14-foot arch force main and four existing ocean outfalls ranging from 5- to 10-foot diameter are required. This paper will present geological features for the project, and details of the proposed post-tensioned tunnel liner and associated structures. INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are 23 independent special districts serving approximately 5.3 million residents in Los Angeles County. Seventeen of the districts that furnish sewerage services to the metropolitan Los Angeles area are signatory to a Joint Outfall Agreement that provides for a regional, interconnected system of facilities known as the Joint Outfall System (JOS). The JOS service area is shown in Figure 1. The JOS serves an area that encompasses 73 cities as well as unincorporated territory and parts of the City of Los Angeles. The JOS provides wastewater collection, treatment, reuse, and disposal for residential, commercial, and industrial users, and it includes seven treatment plants, the largest of which is the JWPCP, located in the City of Carson. Currently, secondary treated effluent is conveyed through two 6-mile long parallel tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter, from the JWPCP to a manifold structure located at Royal Palms Beach, near White Point on the Palos Verdes (PV) Peninsula, from which four seafloor outfalls extend offshore. The two main outfalls, 90- and 120-inches in diameter, extend approximately 1.5 miles offshore and discharge at a depth of approximately 200 feet below sea level. The other two outfalls, 60- and 72-inches in diameter, are used for additional capacity during heavy rain events and extend a shorter distance offshore and discharge at shallower depths. A schematic of the existing system with the proposed tunnel and structures is shown in Figure 2, and the proposed 18-ft diameter tunnel alignment is shown in Figure 3. Both existing tunnels and main outfalls are required to be in service at all times."
