Mechanical mining holds great promise for the mining industry. Realizing this promise depends on developing the tools needed to mechanize a mining operation with a reasonable expectation of success. Mechanical mining entered the 1990s with new machines, new operating methods and new ideas for the future. Mechanical mining can provide higher production, increase safety, reduce roof support requirements, create smoother openings for better ventilation, substitute continuous production for cyclical drill-and-blast procedures, and create opportunities for automatic and teleoperated control. The full promise of this important technology still lies ahead. Obstacles include: • Long-term production prediction: Mechanical systems have a high capital cost. Although recouped by lower operating costs, the tradeoffs are not always clear to mine operators. • Cutting tools for hard rock: Rock of more than 103.4 MPa (15,000 psi) cannot be cut by flexible mining machines. • Machine designs: Many machines cannot convert the required power into rock cutting capability. • Engineering: Better use of the machines in the mine is needed.

This paper will review the basic aspects of the U.S. coal business and explore the commercial approaches which have proven to be most successful.

"Pure sands are typically the domain of slurry shields due to their high permeability and their granular characteristics. However, the Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shield machine technology has advanced in recent years with improved conditioning agents and shield machines that are equipped with slurry injection facilities and alternative mucking methods. These new so-called hybrid EPB machines have steadily increased the range of application of the EPB technology. The contribution discusses the capacities and operational features of hybrid EPB vs. slurry shield technology in pure sands. At the example of the Metro Line 4 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the contribution shows that hybrid EPB tunneling in pure sands is possible and it is compared with a state-of-the-art slurry shield project as the KASIG project in Karlsruhe (Germany). Furthermore, the control of the support pressure by means of foam conditioning and slurry injection in conjunction with a close, real-time monitoring of machine parameters is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shield and EPB technologies have both undergone significant developments in recent years, leading to the use of parts of one technology in the other and even to completely hybrid systems. Also the ranges of application (see recommendations by DAUB (DAUB 2010)) of both technologies have been shifted far beyond their original limits and are largely overlapping by now. Nevertheless, the basic principles of face support remain unchanged. Exploiting the possibilities of process data analysis (Maidl 2014), the interactions between the ground and the shield machine are a matter of research and have been intensely investigated. PRINCIPLES AND CALCULATION OF FACE SUPPORT PRESSURE Figure 1 shows the principles of two approaches for the determination of required support pressures: kinematic methods and numerical methods. Kinematic methods that are employed for the assessment of face stability only consider the situation in front of the TBM. The required face support force is determined by means of an assumed failure wedge that would form in ultimate limit state. Based on the ground properties, the vertical surcharge and the self-weight is transformed into a horizontal force along a virtual sliding surface. This horizontal force is to be balanced by the face support. The calculation results are amended by respective partial safety factors for water and earth pressure and the method-specific support pressure fluctuations are added."

Cross passageways between adjacent tunnels in passenger rail or transit systems may be used during train fire emergencies to evacuate passengers to points of safety in the non-incident tunnel. Rescue trains can be brought into the non-incident tunnel to remove passengers to expedite evacuation times as compared to walking along bench walls to the nearest egress stairs. In cases of multiple train emergencies, the required ventilation capacities can result in high pressure differences between the incident and non-incident tunnels. These pressure differences can make it difficult or impossible for a normal person to open doors of a cross passageway between adjacent tunnels. If opened, the velocity of the airflow through an open cross passageway can reach levels high enough to impede passenger evacuation. This paper describes the analysis of this problem for a sample rail tunnel. A ventilation concept that mitigates the problems of high cross passageway door opening forces and high velocities through open cross passageways is presented.

INTRODUCTION Project Background The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) hired the Seattle office of Parsons Brinckerhoff to lead a team of consultants to produce an Environ-mental Impact Study and perform conceptual and preliminary engineering. The pur-pose of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement project is to replace the existing earthquake damaged and aging viaduct and sea wall, adjacent the downtown waterfront of Elliott Bay, with structures that have improved earthquake resistance and that maintain or improve mobility and accessibility for people and goods along the existing corridor. With an estimated replacement cost over $4 Billion and construction duration exceeding 8 years, it is one of the largest transportation design projects on the West Coast of the United States today. Seattle, Washington is a city of over 2 mil-lion people in the Northwest corner of the United States. Ever since the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897, Seattle has been considered a departure point to Alaska. Because of this, the street along the waterfront was named the Alaskan Way in 1930. Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall The Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV) carries State Route 99 along the shoreline of Elliott Bay through downtown Seattle and is a vital part of Seattle’s highway system. The viaduct carries approximately 110,000 vehicles per day or 25% of all north-south traffic through Seattle (Figure 1). It is 3.4 km (2.1 mile) long with 3 lanes in each direction and was constructed of cast-in-place reinforced concrete between 1952 and 1956. The wear and tear of daily traffic, salty marine air, and several earthquakes have taken their toll on the facility. Studies in the mid-1990s provided early evidence that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life. The viaduct’s increasing age and vulnerability was apparent by crumbling and cracking concrete, exposed rebar, weakening column connections and deteriorating railings. In early 2001, a team of structural design and seismic experts began work to determine whether it was feasible and cost-effective to strengthen the viaduct by retro-fitting it. In the midst of this investigation, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Puget Sound region (the Nisqually Earthquake, located 56 km (35 miles) from Seattle and deep below the surface) caused moderate damage to the reinforced concrete structure. WSDOT closed the viaduct for inspection and repairs intermittently for several days over a period of several months.

Would you believe me if I told you the constant battle between Government regulatory agencies and industry could be won by both sides? No, I'm not crazy, nor have I been soaking up any of that fine Kentucky whitelightning. But I have recently been a participant in a battle where both sides won. Actually, I'm using the term "battle" loosely because, in reality, it wasn't a battle at all - despite the fact that all the ingredients were there for a monumental struggle; i.e.. government, industry, special interest groups and a controversial issue - the development of effluent limitations. I'd like to tell you about it. Historically, on one side of the battle, government has always been ac¬cused of adopting regulations with limited evaluation of existing technologies; and then with seemingly no regard for the economic consequences. On the other side, industry gets punished by government's harsh actions because of their past "do-nothing" attitude toward pollution control. Recently, this battle seems to be losing steam, because both government and industry are beginning to realize that, ultimately, they both will lose. Even more important is the fact that both sides are, or should be, working for industrial expansion compatible with environmental protection.

The reduced need for traditionally trained and educated personnel in the mining industry is systemic to the changing mining industry. Our universities and other training institutions are doing just fine meeting the traditional skill needs required by the industry. But are the skill needs going to be the same in the near future? The answer may be NO!! Mining is changing: increased liabilities and costs of environmental and safety issues; lower grades of minerals in traditional mining activities; the advent of new bio-chemical processes and robotic equipment as more productive and economic alternatives; and, larger more sophisticated and automatic equipment. Engineering is more specific, accurate, precise and expensive. Measurement is more thorough and timely of progress, production, costs, and productivity. And we will be engaging in more undersea mining, possibly space bases processing, less human interaction, and more remote control of events than was ever thought possible in the past. This paper presents several of the systemic changes that are presently and will continue to change the face of mining. It will identify area where education and management will have to address these changes.

Mining equipment life may be extended through preventive maintenance and the proper application of quality lubricants. There are several practices mine operators should consider implementing to preserve their equipment. An exercise in review — Begin by reviewing original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations regarding servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. And the verdict is — If the manufacturer’s recommendations have been followed, good. If not, owners/operators should begin periodic service work on equipment, to help minimize equipment downtime and extend engine life.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

"In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. An amphoteric collector was tested for dolomite removal from phosphate ore. The effects of some operating parameters and their significance on the flotation of dolomite were studied using statistically designed experiments. The parameters studied were impeller speed, pH and collector dosage. Analysis of the results showed that pH is the most significant parameter. Moreover, a concentrate containing 0.53% MgO and ~31.1% P2O5 with a recovery of ~ 90% can be achieved at optimum values of studied parameters, i.e., a pH of 12, an impeller speed of 1,000 rpm and a collector dosage of 2.5 kg/t.

This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.

The US$1,850 million EastLink project is a 39km tollway and includes twin 3-lane,1.5km long, undrained driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and so to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes several of the key issues in the tunnel design and construction, including: the integration of the temporary support design with the Contractor’s tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the Designer and Contractor for support type selection and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. detailed hydrogeological assessments during the design and construction phases to allow confirmation of design loads for the tunnel lining design and the various suite of waterproofing tools in order to meet the project inflow requirements. development of a pre-cast invert solution to the main tunnel secondary lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimize risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic.

The basic concepts and processes of soil and rock melting as applied to excavation technology are reviewed. The electrically heated, small diameter prototype penetrator development sequence is presented. Emphasis is placed on the different methods of handling the fluid rock and soil melts and their significance in providing new solutions in hole support and debris handling problems. The refractory materials requirements, penetrator life and electrical heater technology are presented. Consolidating penetrators, which form stable glass-lined holes in low density rocks and soils, require no debris removal and will find applications in horizontal holes for utilities, cables, and pipeline installations. Extruding penetrators are being developed to make holes in dense, hard rocks. Melt is conditioned into a variety of debris forms, i.e., glass rods, pellets or rock wool, selected to match appropriate debris handling systems. Unique use in drilling into very hot rock or magma for geothermal exploration or production wells is projected. Some of the results of laboratory and field tests of these devices are compared with theoretically derived operating performance. Coring-consolidating penetrators for geological sampling in alluvium are projected to larger diameter self-propelled and guided coring devices for prospecting along proposed tunnel alignments. Application to the melting of annular shafts for pipeline support piles in difficult conditions such as permafrost has been scoped. Conceptual design studies of large diameter tunneling equipment have indicated the system contributions and economic aspects of rock melting relative to material comminution, wall and roof support and materials handling.

Deposits are global, said Barrick Gold&apos;s Smith. This means that the mineral industry, by necessity, is global. "Manufacturers have considerable freedom to decide exactly where they wish to produce whatever it is that they sell," he said. "What we sell, on the other hand, must be produced where nature chose to lay it down. The question is not so much, whether to go global, as when to do it and how to go about it." The timing of international expansion depends on external factors, often political, Smith said, and on internal ones that relate to the company&apos;s size and stage of development. "In deciding how to expand, a company is largely deciding how to adapt its existing business strategy to activity on the world stage," he said Barrick entered 1997 with 1.58 kt (51 million oz) of reserves, Smith said, annual production of 93.3 t (3 mil- lion oz) and cash flow of $463 million. Reserves in- creased 40% in 1996 and production will begin to rise again significantly in 1999. "We believe our fundamental strategy is responsible for our early development and subsequent success," he said. Barrick entered the gold-mining industry in 1983. Its corporate mandate was to create shareholder value, Smith said. From the beginning, the company took a different approach - businesslike, entrepreneurial, strategic and focused. "Many mining companies start out with a technical team and develop business and financial expertise thereafter," Smith said. "In 1983, Barrick had the business people, and then moved into mining." First, it acquired part interest in two small operations, one in Alaska and one in Ontario. Then, in 1984, it merged with Camflo Mines, which operated a low-cost underground operation in Quebec.

This is an update of an original dissertation on this topic by Lavallee, McIvor and Stolovitch (1992). A step-by-step, technical procedure used to measure and improve the performance of plant grinding circuits was adapted into a training program. ?Systematic Design of Instruction? was applied to: ? Determine if training was a suitable way to deliver this new technology; ? Define the technical content of the program; ? Select program specifications based on learner and context characteristics; ? Design, create and test prototypes of the training modules; and, ? Establish a process for plant implementation. The training program covers numerous skills that are extremely valuable for plant personnel, not only in the grinding area, but also for many other parts of the plant. This paper describes how new skills are brought into the workplace through designed instruction can be an effective alternative to hiring during severe skilled labor shortages.

The Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at the Local Level (APELL) program is a process that helps people prevent, prepare for and respond appropriately to accidents and emergencies. APELL was developed by the United Nations Environment Program, in cooperation with industry groups, governments and local communities. Since its beginnings in1988, the program has been implemented in more than30 countries. APELL is a tool for bringing people together to allow effective communication about risks and emergency response. The program provides a common-sense approach to accident prevention and response.
