Some commodities, such as natural aggregate, currently are produced in all 13 states; others such as beryllium and iodine are produced in only Utah and Oklahoma, respectively. Together, the 13 western states make a significant contribution to the US industrial minerals industry.

"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a machine-mounted scrubber and water sprays on face methane levels. Testing was conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery which was designed to simulate a full-scale mine entry. In the test entry, a model mining machine, equipped with water sprays and a simulated dust scrubber, was located at the face of a 20-ft box cut. Blowing ventilation was provided using a curtain with a 40-ft setback distance. Methane released from a pipe manifold located inby the mining machine was monitored at six locations that were 1 ft outby the pipe manifold. Tests were first conducted to evaluate the effects of using sprays and scrubber separately on face methane levels. Additional tests were conducted to determine how a scrubber used with various water spray systems would affect face methane levels. The use of either sprays or scrubber reduced face methane levels significantly. The combined use of sprays with the scrubber further reduced face methane levels a small amount. Primarily the sprays affected methane levels by changing airflow distribution close to the face.

Mega projects present unique challenges with regard to estimating costs. With such projects, which may span decades, these challenges often begin as soon as a project is conceived. The importance of having a sound, resource based estimate avail-able early in the process cannot be overstated because it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. For the final phase of providing an updated cost estimate, often while bidding by contractors is underway, the Engineer?s Estimate (EE) must incorporate present market conditions; account for possible volatile material price swings; be based on actual labor and fringe costs; rely on meaningful productivity rates; and accommodate any recent technology advances while identifying and allowing for risk factors. This paper explains the benefits associated with consultants adopting a contractor?s estimating approach when preparing the Engineer?s Estimate on mega projects like the various tunneling projects in New York City.

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. Defining the concept of sustainability is an important step for industry and society. It is necessary in order to clarify what it means when debunking the many misinterpretations pervasive in different levels of anthropogenic activities. Essentially, the extractive industry has a harvest of differences. Mining involves the extraction of natural resources which are finite, exhaustible, non-renewable, unsustainable, and pay only once. It is remarkable that the definition of sustainability that we will shortly arrive at has totally different characteristics from the definition accepted throughout society. We categorize nature as having its own destiny which is controlled by its own rules and principles and its own society, and is part of nature; therefore, society depends on nature and not vice versa as the initial focus. To society there are no conditions to humanize nature but only respect nature?s rules. It was a challenge to find simplicity for this task not only for the definition but also for the explanation of this concept specifically, to answer the question, ?what is the true meaning of sustainability?? Finally, we are also able through this definition to provide fuel for wide discussions and stimulate critical thinking to improve such a concept. As a result, we present this definition as the tool for society today and for future generations.

Perfect combustion in an engine would produce only water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen as by-products; however, complete combustion is never achieved. As a mobile power plant, the diesel engine is relatively inefficient in terms of energy produced from the energy potential of the fuel. The diesel is not a perfect engine. The fuel burned can undergo a very large number of reactions in the combustion chamber. It only stands to reason that a large number of compounds are contained in the exhaust, actually, thousands of chemicals. The exhaust can be broadly divided into a gaseous phase and a particulate phase. Each phase is made up of organic and inorganic compounds. The vapor phase contains carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, various oxides of nitrogen and many hydrocarbons. The particulate phase contains clusters of respirable inorganic particles made mostly of carbon. This paper will address the health hazards, as we know them today, of the major components of the particulate phase in the exhaust of diesel engines. It will briefly examine the operational factors of the diesel engine as it applies to particulate emissions. Longitudinal studies of occupationally exposed miners are needed with documentation of levels of exposure before a chronic effect of exposure can be determined. At this time, it is not possible to conclude from human studies the level of diesel exhaust exposure that results in the observed lung cancer risk.

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco&apos;s decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco&apos;s precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay&apos;s ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. The Fifth International Conference on acid rock drainage (ICARD 2000) was held May 21-24, 2000, in Denver, CO. The three-day conference consisted of about 150 oral presentations and poster sessions that described the state-of-the-art of acid-rock-drainage (ARD) science and technology. The conference also featured a trade show. It included representatives from consulting companies and government agencies with interests in ARD, as well as other environmental issues related to mining. The conference also included field trips to ARD treatment sites and short courses on acid rock drainage issues. ICARD 2000 was planned and promoted by the ICARD 2000 Organizing Committee and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). Financial support was provided by Barrick Gold, BHP Copper, Homestake Mining, Noranda, Phelps Dodge, PlacerDome, the US Bureau of Land Management, the USEnvironmental Protection Agency and the US Geological Survey. Since the original ICARD was held in Roros, Norway, in 1988, knowledge has improved of the behavior of mine wastes as have methods of environmental mitigation. The ICARD 2000 presented the latest advancements in the field of acid drainage.

This paper will discuss the process for making lightweight aggregate, the waste materials that make good lightweight aggregate, the chemistry of making lightweight aggregate and finally a discussion of the commercial prospects for making lightweight aggregate from wastes. Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last ten years. Many clay-like materials, such as coal-fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce a commercially saleable LWA.

Pennsylvania has ample reserves of high-alumina clays which are potential sources of alumina, but many of these clays contain large amounts of iron, which makes them unsuitable for treatment by acid processes(1). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the optimum conditions for the selective hydrochloric acid leaching of iron (2-4) prior to the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from Pennsylvania ferruginous high-alumina clays. This was accomplished by first testing the iron-bearing minerals and the clay minerals most often encountered in Pennsylvania clays to determine their rate of dissolution in hydrochloric acid solutions. The results of individual minerals were then based for leaching Pennsylvania clays with a 19% hydrochloric acid solution at the boiling point of the acid for approximately 30 minutes to achieve as high as 90% iron removal and only 2-5% alumina losses.

The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

Image analysis for feed belts and flotation has been used for over 20 years. It has been shown to aid in the modelling and optimization of Sag Mill circuits, and any improvements in the image analysis result in improvements in the model for control. Using a laser to measure the height-profile of rocks on the conveyor has been shown to increase the accuracy of the size classification. We have developed a system using two cameras in a stereoscopic configuration to provide height-profile measurement without the added expense and safety concerns of using a laser. Additionally, we have developed a novel technique for calibration of the system, using artificial intelligence techniques to optimize the model fit by adjusting the image analysis tuning parameters to values resulting in the best classification.

Introduction The high-density sludge process was originally developed by Bethlehem Steel Corp. for use on acid mine drainage (AMD) and diluted waste pickle liquor discharges requiring continuous chemical-treatment. This work began in the early 1970s and was first put into practical use around 1973. To date, there are approximately 15 operating systems that have been installed to treat mine drainage in the United States. In addition, there are another 10 systems installed outside of the United States. The dense-sludge process is an innovative and improved method for treating acidic metal-bearing streams in a manner that minimizes the volumetric generation of sludge for disposal. The technology utilizes a sludge-recycle process that forms particles with a low affinity for water. These particles are unlike conventional metal hydroxide solids that contain tightly bound interstitial waters. Typical acid mine drainage streams contain high sulfate concentrations that combine with calcium ions in lime-based treatment systems to form gypsum crystals. Compared to the form generated in conventional lime treatment systems, the physical form of the gypsum is radically altered when the dense-sludge process is utilized. The characteristics of the metals particles are also changed in this process, as the metal hydroxides are converted to metal oxides. The dense-sludge particles settle faster, dewater more readily, are more easily pumped and hold much less water than conventional precipitates. In some cases, because the metal content of the sludge is more concentrated, it can be economically recovered. In general, the conventional and dense-sludge treatment processes are very similar. The changes required to implement the dense-sludge process are minor, and, typically, much of the existing equipment can be utilized. The net results of the process are: reduced operational costs associated with sludge generation, improved process control (particularly pH control), reduced gypsum deposition (i.e., less scaling) on system components and reduced sludge generation resulting in less return water for treatment. Despite the relative simplicity of the process, the application of the technology requires careful discrimination, and the "experience factor" for implementation is an important consideration that should not be over looked.

The paper describes a variety of existing techniques and equipment which when combined together permit faster and cheaper drilling of shafts in soft to medium strength formations. Drilling fluid circulation, methods of hole stabilisation and bit design, including the advantages of flat bottomed and conical bits, shrouds and skirts, tungsten carbide, long tooth and disc cutters are considered. The principles of rock chip transportation and bottom hole cleaning are described together with a new and very efficient fluid circulation system which was invented by the author.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. Microorganisms are directly or indirectly involved in many chemical alterations and in the decomposition of minerals required for their growth. Microbial dissolution of sulfide minerals under acidic conditions can produce over 1,000 times more Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) than chemical action alone. Microbial actions can cause precipitation of minerals, adsorption or release of metals, and formation/destruction of organic-metallic complexes. Soluble minerals can serve as oxidizing substrates, electron donors/acceptors in redox reactions, and can be directly involved in cell metabolism. Microorganisms and microbial oxidation-reduction reactions and their contribution to mineral mobilization and stabilization will be discussed.

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

The southwest Pacific has produced at least four of the world’s premier porphyry copper-gold deposits, and the current level of exploration is likely to produce even more. An appreciable amount of gold is being produced with this copper, with obvious economic advantages. Gold content, in addition to their large size, makes the southwest Pacific’s porphyrycopper-gold deposits very attractive exploration targets. The recognition of telescoping and overprinting of porphyry systems has produced a greater awareness of the likely surface expressions, in particular the significance of advanced argillic lithocaps in porphyry exploration. The recognition of the spatial and genetic association of porphyry copper and epithermal gold systems (Sillitoe, 1972), as in other parts of the world, has had important implications for exploration in the Asia Pacific region.

This paper focuses on the recent achievements and practices developed through the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) initiative of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), in conjunction with the three partner universities involved in mining engineering education – University of New South Wales (UNSW), West Australian School of Mines, Curtin University (WASM), and University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. The paper will then move on to future initiatives. Importantly, the exciting challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering – Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common 3rd and 4th year program to all three universities from 2007, involving innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process. Such an initiative is not without its challenges, and has a long way to go, before becoming a reality. However, it offers greater attractiveness and marketing potential to prospective students, as well as economic efficiencies, whilst delivering a better quality, and hopefully greater quantity of graduates to industry. It can also form a launching platform for a much greater level of international collaboration, through a proposed International Mining Education Network (IMEN) which is currently being floated amongst a number of international educators.
