Outokumpu Technology’s HSC Chemistry process calculation software enables the user to simulate an entire chemical or physical process. The HSC Chemistry 6.0 contains 21 calculation modules and 11 databases for reaction, equilibrium, heat balance, heat transfer, petrological and simulation applications. Most of the calculation modules automatically utilize the same extensive thermochemical database which contains enthalpy (H), entropy (S) and heat capacity (C) data. This database has been expanded to include more than 20,000 species.

With most of the mining industry emerging from the deepest business recession in 50 years, primary attention must be given to surviving in a business climate where dominant foreign competition, depressed prices, and potential overcapacity hang heavy over much of the industry. While already shackled with regulatory constraints, restrictive work rules, and high labor costs, mine operators are faced with the difficult task of reducing costs and improving productivity while operating at less than full capacity. To counter these nearly over-whelming factors, the mining industry must continue at the national level to seek regulatory relief and a rational policy toward foreign competition from government-controlled mines. In addition, dialogue with labor organizations must continue to minimize the impact of labor costs, cost escalators, and antiquated work practices. Although national and international actions have a tremendous impact on the future of domestic mining operations, local actions by mine operators to dramatically improve mining productivity will strengthen the industry's competitive stance. Before any substantial progress can be made, however, mine operators must recognize and define areas that depress productivity and establish goals and measures for improvement. Once problem areas are defined, a combination of technological and motivational concepts can be applied to improve productivity. Timing of Improvements While there is an immediate need for productivity improvements, only certain concepts offer near-term improvement potential while others must, of necessity, fit into a mid-range or long-range time frame. Near-term solutions (immediate to one year) likely will involve motivational concepts - work incentives and training - coupled with available technological concepts that require little capitalized development or site testing. Mid-range solutions (one to three years), by contrast, will include technological improvements in mining equipment, techniques, and systems automation. These concepts require a longer period of capitalized development and site testing before use. Long-range solutions (three years or more), which include adoption of new mining methods and computerized control systems, will appear only after prolonged research and capitalized development programs. Joints may be taken into account when using numerical modeling as an aid to mine design by embedding joints in the model. When using the popular finite element method, say UT3PC, a pre-analysis step is necessary, Step 0. This step is for the computation of equivalent properties of a representative elementary volume of jointed rock (REV) in the model. This Step 0 is taken before Steps 1, 2 and 3 for specification of a rock properties file, generation of the mesh, and model analysis are taken. A brief explanation of equivalent properties and several examples aid in explaining the details of Step 0. Focus is on procedures, input files, and output to show ease of computation. Theoretical details are relegated to references (e.g. Pariseau 2022). Comparisons of safety factor distributions about example mine excavations with direct scaling from mine observations then offer some insights concerning equivalent properties, especially strengths.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

That makes all the difference,” said Dee Kippers, of FMI Henderson Mine, in her talk on “Process optimization during a market downturn (A Moly MacGyver story).” Kippers told an entertaining story of the journey she and her team took in tackling the issue of an annual spike in iron content in the product at Freeport- McMoRan’s Henderson primary molybdenum mine near Empire, CO.As the metallurgists tried one thing after another — cranking up the iron depressant, adjusting pH with sodium hydroxide and hydrated lime, modifying reagent levels — Kippers found that when she shared her results with the operators, communicated with them on what she was doing and got their input, they were more willing to work with her, and more understanding and supportive of her efforts.The results make the case for getting people on board and coming together as a team. Developed at an investment cost of C$35 million, they are ready for commercialization, having been demonstrated on the laboratory, pilot and demonstration scales.The DST process is differentiated from the Plattner chlorination process, which was in use from 1851 to 1916, by moderate process conditions of atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature — the result of using sodium hypochlorite solution, or bleach, instead of direct injection of chlorine gas — and new, cheaper materials of construction, such as polymers, plastics, fiberreinforced plastics and Teflon, resulting in lower capital and operating expenditures."

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three- year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

Industrial minerals are critical to most aspects of modern society. They are pervasive in both industry and in everyone's lives (McVey, 1989; Barsotti, 1993). They are also the dominant class of minerals produced in the United States but this fact is little known outside the industry. For example, in 1993 (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, table 1) industrial mineral dollar value was double that of metals ($20.86 billion vs. $10.88 billion) and employment levels were nearly so (74,000 vs. 40,000). A further difference is that transportation tends to dominate production costs (FOB end user) whereas they are much less significant in other mining ventures or other industries. Finally, metal mines are more concentrated west of the Mississippi; industrial mineral operations are more prevalent to the east (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, p. 16-17). The significance of transport cost is discussed in Part 2, which is essentially Barker and Austin, 1995. Part 1 will update and expand portions of Barker and Austin (1995) and provide a more detailed discussion of import/export relationships using a China/United States reference point because of China's dramatic influence on some industrial mineral markets since the mid-1980s (barite, etc.).

With the exception of the development of large scale mining equipment (haul trucks, draglines, shovels, etc.), there are likely few other candidates responsible for the ability to exploit large tonnage, low grade deposits, than the development of large capacity comminution equipment and circuits; crushers and grinding mills. Ball mills are often the final step in the comminution process and are responsible for providing what should be the optimum particle size distribution of ore to subsequent mineral concentration steps in the flowsheet. Because comminution processes are such high cost centers for milling operations, both capital and operating costs, an enormous amount of research has been conducted to study and model their performance, in order to improve efficiencies (Kelsall, et al., 1969; Austin et al., 1984; Napier-Munn, et al., 1999; Powell and Smit, 2001). With respect to modeling ball mills, estimates of the breakage rates for individual size classes of ore particles are fundamental, as are the particle size class breakage functions (the progeny of particle sizes produced from breaking a coarser particle size class), also termed appearance functions. Fundamental research into particle breakage in tumbling mills focuses on how much energy is input into single particles versus how they break and what size distribution of particles results. Several test methods, including JKMRC?s well known dual pendulum test and drop weight test, have been developed for the breakage of coarse particles down to 6 mm in size (Napier-Munn, et al., 1999). Work on the breakage of finer particles is still an area of intense research and single particle breakage is being investigated as are multiple particle, fixed bed methods (Hoffler and Herbst, 1990; Bourgeois et al., 1992; Whiten, 2007).

The mining industry is changing rapidly. Competition among OEM and aftermarket vendors increases dramatically each year as a result of mergers and acquisitions, and especially technology advancements in the mining industry. Adding value to mine operations by delivering technical value and differentiation is becoming more subtle and more difficult to accomplish. Because of this, identifying and protecting intellectual property has become more important to the product development, engineering and marketing/sales continuum than it had been in the past. How companies protect intellectual property and determine the value of those assets is critical to the sustainability and differentiation of technology providers in the mining industry.

JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) became the first entity to sign an exploration contract for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts (Crusts) with the ISA (the International Seabed Authority). The contract was signed on 27 January 2014, and 15 years exclusive rights for exploration activities had started in the contracted area, located in the North-Western Pacific Ocean. JOGMEC had already conducted basic scientific surveys around the contracted area from 1987 to 2012. Activities by JOGMEC that will be undertaken during the first 5 years of the contract include examination of geological and acoustic surveys, environmental baselines surveys, and undertaking basic studies of R&D in mining, processing, and smelting technologies. Geological surveys will include analysis of rock core samples, using BMS (Benthic Multi-coring System). Deep-towed TV Camera will be used to estimate the distribution of crusts deposit and to get basic environmental data of deep-sea megabenthos. Water sampling, marine sediment sampling, and installation of mooring systems on the seafloor will also be conducted as a part of environmental surveys.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. The Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition was organized to restore a 70 km2 portion of the headwaters of the Slippery Rock Watershed in northwest Pennsylvania. Thirteen passive treatment systems have been installed with engineering and funding provided by private industries, county government and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition, experimental systems have been installed at the Jennings Environmental Education Center which, in addition to monitoring the systems installed within the watershed, provide an array of educational and research opportunities for secondary, college and university students. The coalition sponsors an annual seminar for students to present the results of their research and field trips for public officials and private citizens to learn how public and private partnerships work together to restore the Slippery Rock Creek watershed.

On July 24, 2002, a nonfatal entrapment accident occurred at the Quecreek #1 Mine, Black Wolf Coal Company, when an active mining section inadvertently cut into a flooded abandoned mine. This incident, and the dramatic rescue which ensued, brought national attention to a common problem in the coal mining industry. Since 1995, there have been more than 100 inundations at coal mines in the United States. Unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete mapping of older abandoned mines is typically responsible. Serious problems associated with accidental discharges of fluid mine waste material (slurry) and water from coal refuse disposal facilities have resulted from similar causes. Recent problems related to the inaccurate location of old abandoned mine works have increased the interest in the use of conventional and emerging drilling and geophysical techniques for detection of air-filled and water-filled cavities. The United States Congress has committed significant funding toward investigating the applicability of these technologies. MSHA actively promotes the use of the best available technology to minimize the significant adverse safety and environmental consequences associated with unplanned breakthroughs and inundations. This paper provides background information and a general summary of the MSHA-sponsored field demonstration projects which are currently in progress. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed. The need for field verification/ground-truthing is emphasized. Under appropriate conditions, geophysical methods can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive field exploration program.

The primary factors that determine the marketability of coal from various supply centers in the U.S. are coal quality and supply; i.e. low sulfur, moderate- to high- Btu coals have large market areas when compared to less expensive but poorer quality coals. Price is the major factor in the competitive marketing of similar coal products. Good quality, (moderate- to high- Btu, low sulfur) coals from the Powder River and central Appalachian basins are marketed over large areas of the country, and central Appalachian coal is widely distributed in foreign markets, primarily as coking coal. In contrast, poorer quality bituminous coal (low calorific value and/or high sulfur) from the Illinois Basin, northern Appalachian Basin, and lignite from the Gulf Coast is marketed in or near the States in which it was mined even though the price at the mines may be lower than mine prices for central Appalachian coal. Widespread distribution of sub-bituminous Powder River Basin coal is enhanced by its exceptionally low mining costs, which offsets transportation costs to distant markets.

Longwall face-to-face equipment transfers or moves are, for many companies, the largest single source of non-productive time in a longwall mining system. Detailed planning and resourceful thinking are paramount for economical, safe, and timely longwall moves. New equipment and innovative techniques are frequently tested in order to reduce overall move time. Determining the cost effectiveness of these ideas is difficult since the decision is influenced by many subjective factors. A project scheduling simulation model of the longwall move process was developed in order to analyze and assess the economic viability of innovative transfer methods and equipment. The model provides a project duration frequency distribution and lists of critically indexed activities and paths. It compares the monetary savings from reduced transfer time and capital costs for several innovative ideas.

Four underground respirable dust surveys were conducted to determine factors affecting belt entry dust levels and how using belt air to ventilate work areas affected dust exposures. Belt entry dust levels on the surveyed longwall and continuous miner section averaged 0.59 and 0.26 mg/m3, respectively. The stageloader/crusher contributed an additional 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m3 of dust to belt air, while the feederbreaker contributed 0 to 0.2 mg/m3 of dust. A 1000 ft (305 m) increase in belt entry length or a 200 to 500 tons/shift (181,000 to 454,000 kg/shift) increase in production resulted in roughly a 0.1 mg/m3 increase in dust. Using the belt entry as an intake entry on the continuous miner section appeared to reduce dust levels by 0.1 to 0.3 mg/m3 during cutting. Belt air was not used to ventilate the face on the longwall section.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC), has conducted research to improve electrical fault detection on coal mine direct current (dc) trolley systems. Present circuit breaker protection systems are current-magnitude-based and cannot discern between normal traffic and high resistance electrical faults. Tests were conducted at cooperating mines to assist in developing a neural-network-based detection algorithm for distinguishing between electrical faults and normal operation. The Fast Fourier Transform of the trolley rectifier current signature served as baseline data for the neural network. During field tests, the algorithm performed with greater than 90% accuracy.

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.
