Beneficiation of coal is a water intensive process, and the water is recovered in downstream operations in the high rate thickener (HRT) and vacuum belt filtration (VBF). Clean coal particles entering the HRT have an inherent tendency to enter the overflow because they are extremely fine and hydrophobic. Hence, flocculants (polymers) are used to floc the ultrafine particles so that they settle and enter the underflow. Ultrafine coal particles (−37 μ), which are highly hydrophobic, if present in the stream, will not be efficiently captured by using flocculants alone. This is observed in the normal plant operation at one of the beneficiation plants in the Jharia region, Jharkhand, India. Approximately 6–7% of the feed to the HRT enters the over flow (supernatant water). Hence, this amount of clean coal particles is not recovered and account for production losses. A comprehensive settling and dewatering test work was conducted with clean coal slurry using several commercially available reagents. Studies were also done on different combinations of reagents, including coagulants and surfactants along with flocculants, to improve the settling behavior of the coal particles. The reagents were assessed based on their performance with respect to settling rates, overflow water clarity, and compaction of the underflow solids. Emphasis was given to the ability of the reagents in compacting thickener underflow to higher densities so that maximum water could be recovered from the thickener. Pretreatment of highly hydrophobic coal slurry with a combination of coagulant and surfactant followed by flocculation showed very good settling characteristics with clear overflow.

Precipitation in the northeastern United States, Florida, California and in many industrialized areas of the world is now more acidic (lower pH) than can be accounted for by natural causes. At the same time, the acidity of many lakes and streams in the northeastern United States has been measured and found to be similar to that of actual rain. These facts have led to conclusions that the two conditions are related. Coal burning utilities, 700 to 1000 miles upwind, have been accused of being the cause, leading to proposals for strict emission controls on the alleged offenders. The costs of these controls would place an estimated $10 to $15 billion capital burden on utility customers in about 15 states plus $2 to $6 billion annual operating costs. There appears to be no direct well-established scientific evidence that the accused are guilty but that the indictment is based largely on circumstantia1 evidence. This study examines the evidence, describes the situation and proposes what must be done to reduce the acid precipitation in an orderly cost beneficial manner. It is interesting to observe that studies by the different adversaries on the acid precipitation issue come to different conclusions largely because they do not read the same literature, but selectively develop evidence to support their own points of view, This study will try to review the issues impartially and reach a position of scholarly balance.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory testing for magnetic concentration circuit design is a requirement, just as it is for most other types of concentration. Natural variations in raw materials allow on1 y the broadest of generalities to be made regarding magnetic separation. Further, magnetic fields are geometry dependent, leaving fundamental models of a separator overly dependent upon the exact conditions for which the models were derived. Despite this, an understanding of the basics of magnetic separation and of the problem to be attacked can result in rapid progress towards the final circuit design with a relatively simple testing program. Magnetic Separation Basic Principles A magnetic field can readily be understood in terms of lines of flux. A familiar demonstration of these lines of flux is the pattern of iron filings on a sheet of paper when a magnet is placed underneath. Lines of flux2 are measured in Gauss (1 line/cm2) or Tesla (10000 gauss). Regions of high field strength have a greater number of lines. Field direction is indicated by a convergence of lines. When a particle is placed in a magnetic field it cuts the lines of flux and alters them in one of three basic patterns. These patterns are referred to as diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic materials have electronic structures which react to oppose an applied magnetic field. This opposition acts to locally reduce the applied field slightly. The visualization is that lines of flux diverge and go around the particle. Because of this divergence or opposition, a diamagnetic particle will tend to move towards regions of lower flux density. That is to say that the particle will be repelled by a magnetic field. Aluminum oxide and napthalene are examples of diamagnetic materials. Paramagnetic materials have an electronic structure which increases an applied magnetic field. Although these materials also exhibit diamagnetism, they have randomly oriented impaired electrons which align with the magnetic field. The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.

Control of the environment is as old as mining. Engineers have always had to consider how best to deal with the surface, and the character of the surface environment always affects mining method in some way. However, if the relationship of the mine to the environment is old, today's approach is new. For one thing, land, air and water formerly could be viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome or resources to be utilized to win ore at the lowest possible cost. Now we have come to realize that these nonmineral components of the environment also are highly valuable. For another thing, environ- mental protection has become a public policy issue. Again, a special public interest in land and land use is old. From the firs(, the crown claimed extra rights in valuable minerals, and to this day a multitude of laws and regulations control-and tax-land use in every country. What is new is the detailed public attention bring given to waste management practices, whether these wastes be in the form of solids, liquids or gases, and regardless of where in the environment they appear. (It is convenient to lump all mining environmental problems, including hank fires and subsidence, together under the term "waste management," for in effect that is what they are.) As a result of these changes, the mining engineer must consider that lie is dealing with two productive resources the minerals and the remainder of the environment-and he must expect that lie will be judged not only on his efficiency in recovering the one but also on his effectiveness in protecting the other. Further, in seeking to protect the environment, the modern mining-environmental engineer has a dual role. First, there is the obvious task of finding better ways for industry to cope with waste-management problems in actual operations. Second, there is the less obvious but equally important task of helping formulate appropriate public policy objectives for the environment. Throughout; the section it is assumed that mining is an acceptable land use for the tracts under consideration. The question of whether mining will be permitted at all on these tracts is a further public-policy issue, ultimately to be resolved politically and thus, since it is beyond the scope of engineering, is not a subject that can be usefully discussed in a mining handbook. Finally, none of the statements in the section are predicated on the assumption that required waste-management measures will be privately profitable in the conventional sense. Indeed, the reverse is more likely to be the case-at least if accounts are kept so as to include all appreciable costs and a normal rate of return on investment in waste-disposal and reclamation equipment.',',' However, it is clear that improved waste management will be required of mining firms and that, to a considerable although undetermined degree, this expenditure is in the best long-run interest of both public and industry. The several studies that have attempted to quantify the impact of mining on the environment are admittedly rough but still provide enough information to indicate that there is a big job to be done. Dissolution within Permian evaporites of the Delaware basin has created extreme lateral geologic and physical property inhomogeneity within and above the evaporites. Discriminating a sulfur deposit's geophysical signature from other variances is difficult. This is particularly true of porosity-dependent gravity and electrical methods. However, other techniques that detect alteration of strata above sulfur deposits may be applicable individually or in combination with other types of data. Relationships between sulfur deposits and gravity, magnetic, gamma radiation, spontaneous potential, and soil geochemical measurements are illustrated by data from several Delaware basin geophysical and geochemical surveys.

Southwestern New Mexico is part of a large belt of Late Cretaceous to Eocene copper porphyry deposits found in Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. These deposits are the result of arc magmatism that occurred during the Laramide orogeny. Recently, attention has been brought to other commodities that can be extracted as by- and co-products, many of which are critical minerals. A new compilation of the geochronology of these deposits shows two main pulses of magmatism that produced mineralized deposits and, along with new dates by the author, shines new light on the geologic history of these deposits and the role it plays in critical mineral abundance.

"The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting, depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising, as the global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yet, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is, indeed, precarious and the mining community is a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, including many mine engineers who are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems.There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that the industry continues to expand scale toward “mega pits” and “super caves;” fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment, novel separations, processing and recycling methods, and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions, just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in the mining industry, complete with big data issues, sophisticated predecitve analytics and modeling efforts and cyber-security challenges.Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among the top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that the focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can miners be safer and healthier on-site and off? How can the industry contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and longterm, for having a mine next door? How can artisanal mining practices be transformed to also contribute to sustainable development? How can the industry’s work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises be improved?Given the coming challenges, there is no doubt that the mine engineers of the future will need highly diverse skillsets — meshing traditional and contemporary competencies to a degree not previously considered in mining, or most others fields. To be sure, the scope and scale of mining projects make them wholly different than most other engineering work, aside from perhaps the largest civil and urban development projects. While on-the-job experience will continue to be essential, formal education programs (i.e., at post-secondary institutions) must lay critical groundwork."

The west central Upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur that can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low-cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated. In this study, optimal conditions for the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were created to promote pyrite oxidation and, therefore, sulfur removal from the slate. Preliminary lab scale flask tests using crushed and sized slate (-40 + 100 mesh) and T. ferrooxidans bacteria in a sulfuric acid medium resulted in 70% oxidation of pyrite over a one-month period. Subsequent column leaching tests on coarser materials (-3/8+1/4 in.) operated for six months resulted in a maximum reduction of total sum of 75%. These data suggest that bio-heap leaching to remove sulfur from the slate for use as a kiln feed material is viable.

Electromagnetic energy emitted from electronic devices has been known to interfere with other electronic systems, hindering their ability to function properly. Mines have many electronic devices critical to the health and safety of mine workers that could be negatively affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). To ensure that devices are electromagnetically compatible, tests must first be conducted to measure emissions and check for immunity. There are many standards available across multiple industries that prescribe emission limits and test methods for electronic devices. Due to the unique environment of an underground mine, it may not be enough to simply adopt a standard from another industry to mining. A literature review has been conducted, and an overview of EMI standards in other industries will be provided in this paper. Also, an example of how a standard can be applied to mining equipment is presented. Finally, recommendations on standards which could potentially be applied to mining will also be included. This work will inform the mining industry of EMI standards in other industries so that mine workers and technology manufacturers have guidance of the steps that can be taken to investigate and reduce the impact of electromagnetic interference and potentially work toward electromagnetic compatibility. The findings and research involved in this effort can also be used to explore the need to develop mining-specific EMI recommendations and standards.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

During shallow tunneling in an urban environment, deposits or pockets of saturated soil or fractured, weathered rock are often encountered. Under such conditions, special problems with tunnel support, underpinning of structures adjacent to the tunneling, and/or flow of groundwater into the tunnel occur. If the ground conditions are appropriate, i.e., the soil is sandy, silty or fissured, or the rock is weathered or fractured, the solution to these tunneling problems may be chemical stabilization of the ground. Injection stabilization as an aid to tunneling is practiced extensively in Europe and its use is increasing in the U.S. The advantages of this technique over conventional solutions can be substantial in terms of cost and time, especially in mechanized tunnel boring where even a small zone of soft ground can bring the tunneling to a complete halt. In this paper European practice in using chemical ground stabilization for urban tunneling will be reviewed. In contrast to previous papers which have dealt with specific applications (1,5,8,9) this paper will broadly cover the subject, addressing itself to grouting techniques, costs, the reasons for grouting, philosophy of the users towards grouting, design of grouting solutions (or lack thereof) and methods of quality control. Differences with U.S. grouting practice are also noted. The information presented is derived from several visits to Europe, discussions with European and U.S. grouting personnel, and the available literature (2). The author's most recent European trip was made under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Transportation in conjunction with a research study being performed at Stanford University; a detailed report of this visit is available in reference (6).

Hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) exposure is associated with various health risks for operators of mobile mining equipment (MME). The case–control research was conducted to determine the musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risks associated with exposure to HTVs in the exposed (case) and non-exposed (control) groups. HTV readings were measured at the interface between the hand and the steering device using the SV 105B triaxial hand accelerometer connected to the SV106 human vibration analyzer involving 40 MME operators in accordance with ISO 5349:2001 guidelines. A questionnaire survey was also carried out among both the study groups using Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. The European Union's 2002/44/E.C. was used to assess the health risks posed to the MME operators. Twenty-eight out of the 40 MMEs were generating HTVs exceeding the stipulated daily limits of vibration, putting 70% of the operators at increased risk for developing MSDs. The case group was found to have an elevated risk of exposure with odds ratio (OR) 7.56 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.159, 49.39) and OR 12.80 (95% CI, 2.436, 67.285) times more likely than the control group to suffer discomfort in the left shoulder and left wrist, respectively, indicating increased risk of exposure to HTV. Additionally, cases had elevated risk associated with exposure to tobacco, OR 9.35(95% CI, 1.856, 47.129) compared to those who did not use tobacco. MSDs were more prevalent in the case group compared to the control group. This observation was validated by the field investigations and the responses of MME operators to the questionnaires.

The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. The efforts to do so are herein described.

A virtual reality approach is presented that can aid entities such as mining companies and land use planners in communicating a visual understanding of a mining operation to interested stakeholders, citizens? groups, and public committees. These visualizations are particularly useful in permitting, production planning and mining closures, contributing to accurate communication and evaluation of mine plans, ultimate land use and evaluation of potential design options A case study is presented, that was created using commercially available virtual reality tools, to emphasize the benefits of visualization technologies in the sustainable development of mineral resources.

The study investigates the segregation of iron and titanium in iron sand concentrate pellets reduced using coal under an isothermal-temperature gradient profile. The results show that metallic iron migrates to the surface while titanium and other oxides move to the center of the pellet. The study provides insights into the reduction process and the behavior of iron and titanium during heat treatment.

Adsorption of acrylamide based homo and copolymers on hematite was investigated as a function of phe nature of the polymer charge and functionality of the polymer. Effect of addition of sodium dodecylsulfonate and dodecylamine hydrochloride was also studied and was determined to result in an increase or decrease in the amount of polymer adsorbed depending on, the charge characteristics of the surfactant and the polymer, pH of the suspension, concentration of the various species and the order in which these species were added to the system. The surfactant adsorption under given conditions on the other hand, was found not to be affected by the presence of the polymer molecules. The data is analyzed to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption of polyacrylanide type polymers on hematite both with and without the surfactant species king present in the system.
