After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. "INTRODUCTION In 1990, the uranium production of SDAG Wismut in East Germany was stopped. 45 years of inconsiderate destructive exploitation had scarred both landscape and nature. With the “Wismut law” which came into force in December 1991, the Federal Republic took responsibility of the remediation of the legacies from former uranium ore mining and milling in Saxony and Thuringia. A unique opportunity turned out in order to remove environmental damage, to enhance the life quality of the local population, to shape new landscapes and to advance the economic restart. (1) The results of nearly 25 years of remediation activity are evidence that this opportunity was used at all former SDAG (Sowjetisch-Deutsche Aktien-gesellschaft) Wismut sites. The reference project “Wismut“ has evolved into a joint project of all parties involved and radiates beyond the affected regions. This is particularly reflected by the Know-how transfer starting from Wismut and the increasing activities for third parties abroad.WATER MANAGEMENT AT WISMUT REHABILITATION Within the Wismut project, water management and conventional technical water treatment are by far the most cost-intensive long-term tasks of the remediation programme. Over the medium term, there is no viable alternative to the operation of active systems to catch and treat contaminated mine waters at the Ronneburg, Schlema, Königstein, Pöhla, Seelingstädt and Helmsdorf sites. Based on the status quo, this paper outlines the key issues of the Wismut GmbH water management strategy over the medium and long term. It is focused primarily on achieving protection goals for potentially impacted water bodies in the surroundings of Wismut sites and on optimising associated remediation expenditures as well as on creating the prerequisites for achieving low post-remedial care and maintenance or walk-away system status over the long term. (2) The applied mining practices during the active SDAG Wismut period have not been up to the high standards of modern mining operations and their requirement to leave former production premises and deposited residues in a condition that was not only physically but also chemically stable. Rather the emission of mine and seepage waters laden with high acidity, metal and salt content is a frequent corollary and difficult legacy of historic mining and processing operations (4, 5). As a consequence, the control or mitigation, respectively, of environmental impacts associated with contaminated mine waters ties up enormous public resources worldwide (6, 7)."

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. A study of coal pillar strength at the Beehive Mine in central Utah was done in the 1970s. This study was a cooperative effort by the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Mine measurements of closure at 117 points and pillar stress using 119 vibrating wire stress gauges were made during retreat mining in this room-and-pillar operation. Laboratory testing for the strength and modulus of 372 coal cylinders up 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and 0.6 m (2 ft) in length was also done. Two-dimensional finite element model analyses complemented the study. However, the real world of mining is three-dimensional and in consideration of the significant advances in computing power since the time of the original study, a revisit of the data seemed warranted. In this regard, a novel finite element method was used that allows for the whole-mine analysis of tabular excavations on the kilometer scale and yet enables details to be obtained at pillar walls on the meter scale. The effects of material properties variability in situ and of joints can also be taken into account. Results that compare computed two- and three-dimensional seam-level closures with mine measurements show noticeable differences; three-dimensional results are reasonable, while two-dimensional results overestimate closure by nearly a factor of two.

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

A primary goal of Ground Control Research, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is to develop information that can be used by the mining industry to reduce accidents and fatalities due to failure of mine roof. A specific research objective is to determine methods to detect hazardous coal mine roof. This paper reviews the existing and experimental techniques, and describes a recent Bureau of Mines contract research project that resulted in a simple technique and prototype instrument for evaluating mine roof competence.

Industrial Mineral Fillers, LLC. is in the initial stages of mining and processing Anorthosite (CASPAR TM) at its CASPAR mine located in Soledad Canyon, Los Angeles County, California The CASPAR is being mined from the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. Preliminary results suggest that CASPAR is a desirable alternative to silica sand used in construction applications, such as, stucco, grout, abrasives, and other uses including filtration and golf course recreation sands. With the use of standard ore dressing techniques, CASPAR is suitable for use as a filler in paint, plastics and rubber. Environmentally, CASPAR has advantages over silica sand, in that, there is no detectable Free Silca.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. The three most commonly used methods of direct-reuse recycling, the coldstream process, bloaching and the Bernard or zinc process, are reviewed,

Large reserves of high-purity Permian gypsum crop out and are at shallow depth in three regions of western Oklahoma, Gypsum beds in the Blaine Formation are 10 to 30 feet thick and are generally 95 to 99 percent pure, whereas the massive Cloud Chief Gypsum is 20 to 100 feet thick and is 92 to 97 percent pure. Reserves are estimated at 48 billion short tons. Eight companies in the State currently mine about 1 million tons of gypsum each year for wall- board, for plaster, as a retarder in portland cement, and as a soil conditioner. Future uses, under more favorable market conditions, may be in the chemical industries, largely because of gypsum's potential as a source of sulfur. Three thick sequences of Permian rock salt underlie most of western Oklahoma at depths of 30 to 3,000 feet. Individual salt beds 5 to 30 feet thick are interbedded with thinner layers of shale and anhydrite. Five large salt plains, fed by natural springs of saturated brine constitute additional resources of salt. Reserves, estimated at 20 trillion short tons, are virtually untapped, and, ironically, about 90 percent of the salt used in Oklahoma is imported. Chemical data on the rock salt are lacking, but evaporated salt produced from brines is generally 97 to 99 percent pure. Current production from three solar-evaporation plants is used mainly for stockfeed, recharging water softeners, and deicing roads. Potential uses are in the chemical industries, where salt or brine is a necessary raw material.

Due to the unstable bearing capacity of the soil, it’s highly possible for us to find cracks in the area. This paper aims to build computer vision which able to detect truck’s distance from safe limit allowed during dumping activity. The system will warn the truck’s driver if the truck has crossed that predetermined safe limit.

The study area is located in the NW of Uluborlu (Isparta). Massive limestones and alluvial deposits form the lithological units of the study area. The average thickness of the alluvium deposit consisting mainly of light brown - red colored and fine grained clastic sediments which derived from the limestone is about 10 meters. The aim of this study to investigate the uses of this alluvial sediments as tile - brick material. For this aim, disturbed and undisturbed samples have been taken from different depths in the alluvial deposits. Mineralogical compositions have been determined by XRD and major oxide contents by XRF. Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the technological properties of the samples. The selected major oxide contents of samples vary between A12O3 (24.6 - 24.12 wt %), CaO (0.76 - 4.27 wt %), Fe2O3 (10.21 - 10.29 wt %), MgO2 (1.25 - 1.51 wt %). CaCO3 and MgCO3 values calculated from the geochemical analyses, are between 1.55 - 1.62 and 2.62 - 3.17 respectively. The ratios of grain size of the samples are 82 % for < 0.2 mm and 5 % for > 3 mm. Geochemical analyses and technological features of the samples indicate that these fine grained sediments of alluvial deposit are suitable in terms of uses as tile - brick material. The potential reserve of this tile - brick material has been determined as 40 million tones.

Pyhasalmi is a massive sulfide orebody located in central Finland. The mine has been in operation since 1962. The flotation concentrator produces Cu, Zn, Pb and pyrite concentrates. The plant has used an on-stream analyzer for process control since 1968. The original analyzer has overlived a few generations of minicomputers, but the analytical parts are essentially unchanged. The on-stream analyzer is a critical component in plant process control system, which has made Pyhasaltni one of the pioneers in the art of computer control and optimization of flotation plants. The paper summarizes the experiences gained from the use of the high performance elemental analyzer system and the proven benefits from the use of on-stream analyzers at a complex sulfide flotation. The aging analyzer is approaching the end of its useful life. A new state of the art analyzer system is undergoing testing at Pyhasalmi.

Room-and-pillar mining at the Big Island Mine uses narrow, yield (i.e., load transferring) pillars to achieve high resource recovery and productivity. Two flat-lying 3- to 3fi-meter (10- to 11fi-ft) seams are mined. The interburden between the seams is about 10 meters (33 ft) and the cover depth is 250 to 330 meters (820 to 1,080 ft).Most of the mining has been single-seam, but two-seam mining will begin in the near future. Yield pillars minimize stress transfer between the seams. However, it is important that good long-term stability be maintained to prevent subsidence over a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. Three stress issues impacting stability are discussed in this paper: (1) higher-than-gravity vertical pre-mining stresses, (2) time-dependent stress transfer or arching, and (3) stresses induced by strata gas. Although the stress environment and behavior is not fully understood, steps have been taken in mine design and operations to minimize impacts to stability. Stress determinations have been very important to verify analytical predictions used in mine design and in long-term stability assessment.

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. (A complete report on the project can be found in T&UC, December 2013, page 61.) Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

The lesser developed countries (LDC&apos;s) may be classified into two categories: 1) oil producers, and 2) non-oil producers. The non-oil producing LDC&apos;s, as a class, are at present in very difficult financial straits. (1) Since the quadrupling of world market crude oil prices in 1972, an ever greater share of the LDC&apos;s export earnings have gone to pay for oil imports, in-stead of national reinvestment. The LDC&apos;s inter-national debts--much of it to pay for oil--have soared to record levels, with consequent limits for future credits. (1) Again, this inhibits future national investments, and there does not seem to be an end to the future increase of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) prices. Indeed, some of the economic difficulties in some metal markets--particularly the imbalance of production vs. markets for copper, can be traced indirectly to the OPEC cartels&apos; heavy-handed impact on copper producing LDC&apos;s which must produce copper at any price to meet their oil bills. (2) Among the major oil importing LDC&apos;s are the Philippines and South Korea. 50th nations have substantial cement industries. The South Korean industry is geared for major export markets in the Far East. Both nations have ambitious plans for economic growth in order to accommodate burgeoning populations with ever increasing expectations for high standards of living. These plans had some success, more or less, until the high OPEC oil cartel charges had to be borne. Now, in common with all oil-deficit areas, the Philippines and South Korea are seeking lower cost sources of energy. Both countries have coal deposits. In the case of the Philippines, the reserves are in scattered, relatively small deposits. Most of the coal deposits are faulted, folded and, in general present formidable production problems for limited reserves. Nonetheless production has been on the order of about 70,000 to 150,000 tons per year in the last 30 years. Prior productions (1920-1941) varied between 9,000 Co 150,000 tons per year. (13)

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960&apos;s, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. INTRODUCTION Tunnel construction has always been an extremely high risk form of contracting primarily due to the inaccessability of information concerning the ground conditions to be encountered during excavation. We certainly make every effort to overcome this problem through borings, geological research, site visits, etc.; but at best owners, engineers and contractors alike are only able to interpolate a relatively small amount of factual data from isolated sections of the project into a forecast of ground conditions for the entire project. In essence this becomes an "educated guessing game" with risk to reward ratios (and subsequently the bid price) in direct relationship to the contractor&apos;s confidence in the quality of the guess. In many instances it is economically or physically infeasible to obtain information and of course the total picture is never known until the project is complete. This problem effects the contract format as well as price. The contractor&apos;s ability to handle unforseen problems on the project become extremely important as to the project&apos;s overall success. The following pages contain an actual case history of a project which affords an excellent example of the entire spectrum of situations resulting from tunnel construction in difficult ground conditions.

Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers&apos; findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.

Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.
