When a new tunnelling project starts, it has been a vital tradition for decades to cast and erect master rings horizontally on a flat surface to demonstrate the compliance with dimensional tolerances. Some tenders ask for the erection of two or even three rings upon each other or repeated master ring erections at intervals throughout the project. Especially for large diameters, this is a challenging and risky task for the workforce in the segment factory. A truck-mounted crane is often necessary, and in some cases it can take up to a week to complete a master ring. The concept of virtual rings has the potential to replace this tradition by assembling master rings digitally instead of physically. This is based on a best-fit approach, considering the 3D coordinates from laser tracker measurements of segments or segment moulds. Building a virtual ring, a sub-millimeter accuracy can be achieved, the alignment of neighboring circumferential and ring joints observed, and the fit of bolt holes checked. The traditional method, on the other hand, is discussed controversially despite the significant amount of work and risks—particularly as the horizontal position of the ring and absence of gaskets do not simulate the reality in the excavated tunnel. This paper will highlight the technical aspects of virtual rings, as well as their pros and cons, illustrated by a case study from London Thames Tideway where a total of 30 physical master rings could be replaced by virtual rings.

New global industry standards and regulatory changes regarding mining tailings management are driving installation of tailings filtration plants to decommission existing tailings dams and implement dry stacking. Target of this project was to reduce ultrafine slime tailings deposition. Previous investigation at Samarco concentrator has showed a 35% decrease in tailings filtration throughput when feeding a mix of 95% flotation tailings with 5% slime tailings (compared with 100% flotation tailings), also worsening geotechnical aspects such as material workability during dry staking. Industrial trials using a proper filter aid at tailings filtration plant feeding a mix of 94% flotation tailing and 6% slime tailing (equivalent to 30% of total slime generation) have provided filtration performance maintenance (throughput and cake moisture), and dry stacking the dewatered material. Results achieved will enable life expansion of existing slime disposal structures, as well as potential life of mining extension. Furthermore, reagent chemistry influence is discussed by the light of geotechnical aspects, which has been showing improved KPIs, such as workability, compressibility and permeability.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to develop a process for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 parts per million of tungsten (70 ppm WO3). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by Bureau chemists, 98 percent of the tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92 percent of the tungsten vas recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44 percent tungsten as tungsten trioxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process investigation unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented the Fe2+ /Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40 'C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb) compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid misting was completely eliminated, and SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the role of water resource monitoring in mining activities and to discuss the considerations that go into designing and implementing a monitoring program. The design of a monitoring program is invariably based on sound engineering and scientific judgement since no design formulas exist that can be universlly applied to the monitoring of all activities. As discussed in this paper, however, a methodology of designing a water resource monitoring program does exist. In order to cost-effectively monitor the water resource impacts of mining activities, the following three monitoring related items should be understood: 1. the role of water resource monitoring in the planning, construction, and operational stages of mine development, 2. the available water resources monitoring methods and the proper role of each method in the various scages of mine development, and 3. the strategies that should be followed in designing and implementing a water resource monitoring program.

The inhalation of dust has been a problem in the mining industry since antiquity. Crystalline silica is now known to be the cause of silicosis, a form of pneumoconiosis that is associated with excessive exposure to respirable particles in some mining and industrial environments. Crystalline silica was reviewed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 1986 and classified as a Group 2A, Probably Carcinogenic to Humans in Volume 42 and Supplement 7 of the IARC Monographs (1987). In 1996, IARC reviewed additional literature and studies published in the intervening decade and recommended that quartz and cristobalite, two polymorphs of crystalline silica, be listed as Group 1, Carcinogenic to Humans. Their recommendations and reclassification were published in 1997 in IARC Monographs 68.[2] In both Monographs, IARC classified amorphous silicas as Group 3, Inadequate Evidence for Carcinogenicity to Humans.

Establishing suitable control of pH, a requirement in a number of mineral and chemical industries, poses a difficult problem because of inherent nonlinearities and frequently changing process dynamics. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for effectively controlling such systems. This technique successfully combines the process control capabilities of fuzzy logic and the search capabilities of genetic algorithms. Fuzzy logic offers an effective mechanism for handling nonlinearities, while genetic algorithms can provide fuzzy logic controllers with real-time adaptive capabilities. This Bureau-developed technique is applied to a laboratory acid-base neutralization experiment. Nonlinearities in the laboratory system are associated with the logarithmic pH scale and the changing process dynamics are due to alterations in pH and buffering capacity input solutions. Results indicate fuzzy logic controllers augmented with genetic algorithms offer a powerful alternative to conventional process control techniques in such nonlinear, rapidly changing systems.

"From 2011–2016 there were 1,511 documented injures, including 7 fatalities, from ground falls in U.S. underground coal mines. The majority of these ground fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely utilized in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program at the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of a 2.4-m x 3.7-m panel of 8-gauge welded screen were evaluated using a newly designed, large laboratory screen test frame with multiple load pull locations. This screen was tested in a configuration that simulates current installation practices in U.S. coal mines. In this study, the effects of displacement loading rate, load pull surface geometry, and the inclusion of roof channel on the screen performance were evaluated. Ultimately, the type of information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to aid in developing wire roof screen design criteria and to assist mine operators in the selection and use of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION Over 1,500 injures, including 7 fatalities, occurred from 2011–2016 from ground falls in U.S. underground mines with the majority of these ground-fall injuries caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Comptonet al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)."

In the summer of 1957,9 the University of California sponsored a World Conference on Prestressed Concrete in San Francisco to which were invited a number of Soviet engineers. While attending the conference, these engineers in turn asked the University to form a delegation of American engineers to visit the Soviet Union the following year for the purpose of studying Soviet advances in concrete technology. A six man delegation was formed, and the dates of the Russian tour fixed for May 10th through May 21st, 1958. Before arriving in the Soviet Union, the American Delegation attended the Third International Congress on Prestressed Concrete in Berlin. While there, we noticed that the delegation from the U. S. S. R. used displays and showed motion pictures of many construction projects which we later were shown in Moscow. Our delegation left East Berlin by Russian aircraft on May 11th, and arrived in Moscow that afternoon. We were met by our Russian engineer hosts from The Academy of Construction' and Architecture who made all subsequent arrangements for our itinerary. This Academy has no counterpart in the United States. It. does 40 per cent of all engineering-and scientific work in the building construction field and coordinates 60 per cent of that done by other Soviet agencies. Due to the prestige of the Academy in Russian affairs, our delegation was able to obtain a surprisingly broad picture of construction activities in Moscow and Leningrad in just ten days time

A control system for reducing peak loads on mine conveyor networks is proposed. The system involves continuous monitoring of flows into the conveyor network and section feeders with variable discharge capability. The control strategy uses differences in material transit times from various production units to the transfer points in the network to forecast load levels that will be intersected by the discharge of the controlled feeders over future time intervals. Feeder setpoint adjustments are made to prevent excessive peaks in the combined flows at the transfer points, while maintaining adequate feeder throughflow to avoid production bottlenecks.

Three major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first, most likely, resulted from sub- duction of a Pacific plate (Farallon plate) beneath the North American plate, resulting in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 43 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago, igneous activity migrated to the southwest, largely as eruption of volumincus rhyolite-quartz latite ash-flow sheets, ending about 17 a.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south-trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin; is mostly basaltic or bimodal basalt-rhyolite. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between about 22 to 6 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest-trending Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks, but the largest production has come from mines associated with andesitic rocks of the third (western Great Basin) suite. The oldest (34 to 42 m.y.) andesitic rocks (first suite) of the northern Great Basin have produced some large deposits; slightly younger silicic rocks of this suite are mostly barren. Many small ore deposits are associated with the 17- to 8-m.y.-old basalts (second suite) of northern Nevada.

Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

Neutron capture prompt gamma-ray analysis provides the best method for on-line analysis of the elemental composition of large volumes of bulk material. This paper summarizes the Monte Carlo models which simulate the radiation transport within two such analyzer systems; namely, the borehole configuration and the conveyor belt configuration. The models are useful in the design optimization of the analyzer systems, in minimizing the amount of experimental calibration data for calibrating these analyzers, and in investigating the detection sensitivity for different elements. The computational scheme in these models is made extremely efficient by the use of various powerful variance reduction methods and by efficient data management. Experimental verifications of the two models carried out in the laboratory indicate very good agreement with the Monte Carlo results.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. Conveyor systems persist in being a source of injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. To reduce these incidents, better methods are needed to enhance the monitoring of probable hazards and improve situational awareness during the normal operation and maintenance of conveyor systems. To address these issues, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continue to investigate emerging technologies that show the potential to improve miner safety around conveyors. This paper presents a feasibility assessment by NIOSH researchers of a fully integrated, commercially available wireless Internet of Things (IoT) system to improve situational awareness around conveyor systems.

During 1980-2000, the Florida Phosphate industry will deplete its Central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the ?so-called? Southern Florida Reserve areas. These new mines will require new mining, beneficiation and tailings disposal technologies in that the southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the Central Florida deposits furthermore, government regulations will necessitate the development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

How is the Government's oil import control program doing? In July 1954 Mr, Eisenhower established the Cabinet Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy. On July 29, 1957, the Administration imposed "voluntary" company oil import quotas on American oil importers to maintain "a healthy domestic (oil) production industry" and safeguard "national security." On March 10, 1959 the President by proclamation made the voluntary program mandatory. But study of the program in practice shows that it is not working out as expected and-that there is some doubt that its aims and other related Administration purposes are being achieved. Take the Administration's anti-inflation policy. To be sure, the President apparently recognized in his March 10th proclamation that in restricting cheap imported oil in favor of more expensive-domestic oil he was making the inflation fight that much harder, for he called for Government surveillance of domestic oil prices to prevent them from getting out of hard, And indeed while domestic crude oil prices have not risen appreciably during 1959 neither have they fallen appreciably (although there has been some price weakness in the past few weeks).

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll in the US coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicates that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied in order to reduce dust levels. An overview ofCWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in these two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number.-of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section I of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the antitrust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.
