The Yakobi nickel-copper deposit is located essentially at tidewater in the east-central part of Yakobi Island, about 16 1 airline km (100 airline miles) west of Juneau, and can be reached by float plane and boat from Juneau and Sitka. The fishing village of Pelican, population 400, is situated 14.5 km (9 miles) to the east. An unimproved road, approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) long, connects a dock site at Lisianski Strait with the main part of the deposit known as the Basin Area (Fig. I). Other mineral occurrences are known as the Takanis, Flapjack, and Beach Areas. Another smaller nickel-copper deposit is located about 32 km (20 miles) to the south on Western Chichagof Island and is known as the Mirror Harbor nickel-copper deposit. The original discovery of the Yakobi deposit was made by S.H.P. Vevelstad about 1920 and a 47.5-m (156-ft) long adit was driven on the southwest side of the deposit in the Basin Area. The deposit was examined by J.R. Van Fleet of Union Carbide in 1930 and by J.G. Fairchild in September 1931. Stanley and Yates of the International Nickel Co. of Canada (Inco) visited the property in August or September 1937. In 1942, the controlling interest in the deposit, covered by 124 unpatented claims, was said to be held by Vevelstad and associates

Recent re-classification of crystalline silica as a potential human carcinogen has resulted in a new limit of 0.1% free silica in bulk powdered minerals. Detection of silica at this level can be expected to severely challenge or exceed the capabilities of existing protocols for x-ray diffraction, the traditional method for free silica determination. Automated SEH-EOS analysis provides an attractive alternative method, with direct analysis of individual particles for the determination of the concentration of free silica, and a direct measurement of silica particle sizes. This paper will discuss automated SEH analytical procedures, sample preparation, and statistical considerations.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in pyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05 to 20.0 g/l S02. Other test variables include iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation and pH.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of three major islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix) and some 50 smaller islands that are located primarily along the coasts of St. Thomas and St. John. St. Croix, the largest of the islands, is located approximately 160 km south-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico and is about 218 km in area (Fig. 1). St. Thomas, the second largest island is located 64 km east of Puerto Rico and incorporates approximately 77 km2. St. John is located immediately to the east of St. Thomas and incorporates approximately 49 km2. The climate in the U.S. Virgin Islands is maritime tropical. The average annual rainfall at higher elevations is 127-152 cm and at lower elevations 51-76 cm. There is no well-defined wet or dry season. Temperatures generally average in the 80's (F°) with only a 5°-7° F variation throughout the year.

Section 516 of Public Law (PL) 95-87, commonly known as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), requires that underground coal mine operators must "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." Implied in the constraints of Section 516(b)(1) of SMCRA is a determination of what constitutes "material damage" to surface structures, renewable resource lands, and the capacity for sequential land use following underground mining. The authors have already briefly addressed the subject of damage criteria in relation to surface structures (Bhattacharya et al, 1984). In this paper, an attempt is made to provide quantitative guidelines to ascertain material damage to renewable resource lands, although the data available to establish these criteria are considerably more limited than is the case for surface structures. Besides, many more variables influence the severity of the impact at a given site, making the task of assigning stringent ground movement limits even more complex. This often necessitated use of professional judgement and occasional reverting to a qualitative approach. Hence the reader is cautioned at the very outset that the quantitative limits presented herein are approximate and are primarily intended to serve as rough guides for ascertaining the extent of damage to the renewable resource lands under consideration, and that depending on site-specific conditions the actual damage incurred may differ significantly from that predicted by the proposed criteria. The authors, however, feel that the criteria suggested are somewhat conservative, but realistic. The actual damage observed should generally be less severe than predicted by these criteria. It may also be clarified here that the term "subsidence", as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface and subsurface effects associated with the mining of minerals and not only the vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

Nahcolite is a naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate mineral found principally in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado. An 8-m thick nahcolite bed, 610 m below the surface, is the target of this first commercial nahcolite mine. A chamber and pillar mining system is developed by solution mining parallel 8-m tall by 18-m wide by 450-m cavities initiated along horizontally drilled holes. Hot water leaching, cooling crystallization and flash drying is the process. The sodium bicarbonate product is consumed by the baking, animal feed, industrial and acid rain abatement markets. A project overview, emphasizing the combination of horizontal drilling and solution mining technologies, will be presented.

Grinding in steel mills adversely affects the flotation removal of pyrrhotite from magnetite ores. To elucidate the effect of grinding media on the floatability of pyrrhotite, rest potential and short-circuit current measurements were made on electrode combinations of pyrrhotite-mild steel and pyrrhotite-stainless steel. Galvanic contact of pyrrhotite with mild steel increased the rate of surface reactions on pyrrhotite in air-exposed and oxygenated solutions. It was postulated that the formation of ' an iron hydroxide coating on the pyrrhotite adversely affected its floatability. Its formation was minimal when pyrrhotite was contacted with stainless steel. Fine magnetite particles caused slime coating on pyrrhotite surfaces by magnetic interaction and impaired the flotation of pyrrhotite.

INTRODUCTION This paper is for the mining manager, generally meaning mine superintendent, chief engineer, and others who have control over the mine operation responsible for feeding the insatiable beast called the mill or processing plant. The author is not from mine management but from the field of technical mine engineering consulting. This fact illustrates the authors gross inadequacy to comment on this subject. On the other hand, the consulting profession allows visits to many mine operations, worldwide, supplying many different commodities. The common complaints and misunderstandings that have been heard worldwide will be shared within the following few paragraphs. In order to discuss optimization, one must first define it. There certainly will be many papers in the following sessions that claim to optimize something, or other, based on a technical definition of cost, efficiency, throughput or some other quantifiable basis. DEFINE OPTIMIZATION Actual optimization of an operation is not as easily achieved as most of us in the technical world would like. Borrowing terminology from the technical world, the boundary conditions and the optimization function are usually not well defined. The problems in many cases do not lend themselves to quantification. Typical management procedures are to establish goals or strategies that set the approach or general boundary conditions to the overall plant. Three simple cases are listed below as possible corporate strategies to optimization of a mine-process plant complex. 1) Maximized discounted cash flow 2) Minimized long term cost of product 3) Maximized resource utilization This list seems simple when presented in the above context, uncluttered by constraints such as market position, capital availability, or environmental limitations. A recent advance in slope dewatering-depressurization and stabilization is the use of vacuum assist horizontal drainage. (Brawner and Pakalnis) Horizontal drains have been used for several decades to reduce water pressures in slopes to improve stability. The benefit from vacuum assist arises from an increased hydraulic gradient caused by an induced negative atmospheric pressure. A research program included a laboratory model whereby the effects of vacuum drainage were evaluated. Three case studies are described where the technique has been successful. The first is in a rock slope where flows increased from 0.1 1/min. under gravity drainage up to 1.2 1/min, upon vacuum. The second study involves installation of 17 drains placed at a slightly downward gradient to intercept and de- pressurize aquifers under a major tar sand deposit in Canada. The third study was on a large open pit copper mine in British Columbia where flow increased about 30 per cent.

The adsorption of ethoxylated sulfonates and nonionics of the same ethoxylation number?on a low-ash coal has been studied. The surfactant adsorption has been investigated as a function of concentration, pH, temperature and ionic strength for three homologues. Zeta potential of coal particles and surface tension of supernatants has been concurrently determined to eludicate the orientation of sudactant molecules on the coal surface as well as the mechanism of adsorption process. The adsorption data are utilized to calculate thermodynamic parameters such as the free energy of adsorption and isoteric heats of adsorption.

The 1987-88 Denver Brown Cloud Study was performed to determine the sources of the particle cloud which forms over Denver each winter. The study was organized under the leadership of Colorado Governor Roy Romer , EPA Region VIII and the Greater Denver Chamber of Commerce. The study was sponsored by over 40 organizations representing governmental agencies, the natural gas industry, the coal industry, utilities, oil companies, railroads, the motor vehicle industry, and other Denver area companies and organizations. The cost of the study was $1.5 million which was raised almost entirely from private sources. The study team was headed by Dr. John Watson of the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada. Dr. Watson is a recognized expert in conducting studies of this type.

"Building and operating tunnels has been a highstakes endeavor in terms of costs, complexity, safety and impact on contractors, owners and the public for a long time. There are many variables that need to be closely monitored and managed to construct a tunnel on-time, on-budget and safely. Once built, there are also many elements that need to be monitored and managed to operate a tunnel safely and efficiently.Fundamentally, the risks to the safe and efficient construction and operation of a tunnel are a function of the degree of harm and the likelihood of the harm occurring. From a cyber security perspective, risk assessments used to inform decision makers and support risk responses are typically based on identification of relevant threats; internal and external vulnerabilities; the impact that may occur given the potential for threats to exploit vulnerabilities and the likelihood that harm will occur. This article focuses on creating awareness of vulnerabilities associated with technology used in tunnel construction and operation and some of the challenges associated with remediation of these vulnerabilities. As we all know, technology has been evolving at an accelerating pace and infiltrating every aspect of our lives in new and often exciting ways. In the world of tunneling, sensors and systems that provide position and time have become accurate, rugged and cost-effective enough to come out of the research labs and into the equipment and systems used every day. There are many opportunities to employ connected computing devices and sensors to costeffectively capture, integrate and analyze key data with minimal latency to manage risk better, improve safety and avoid surprises."

This paper presents pit slope monitoring and back-analysis case studies con-ducted to evaluate and, if possible, stabilize slopes at the Berkeley Pit in Butte, MT. Two specific slopes were studied in detail. The first slope was determined to be near limiting equilibrium, as evidenced by its response to the initiation and cessation of mining, while the second failed on three occasions. Back-analysis of the failed slope verified the laboratory-derived geomechanical properties of the earth materials. Early detection of slope movement can show a need to take action, including modifying slope geometry, dewatering if the slope were wet, and/or investigating and implementing artificial supports. Monitoring slope displacements in open-pit mines can supply data for predicting collapses and preventing serious damage, injuries, and/or loss of life.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet the long-term needs of a growing population. The tunnel will be 1,100 m long and 6.5 m in diameter (3,610 LF × 21.3 ft), constructed under Burrard Inlet between North Vancouver and Burnaby in British Columbia. It will be excavated through mixed ground conditions under high groundwater pressure, using a slurry TBM, between a 72 m (236 ft) deep shaft in soil and a 110 m (361 ft) deep shaft in rock. The completed tunnel will accommodate three large-diameter water mains that will be installed as part of the tunnel contract. This paper presents the project from design and contractor procurement, into the current construction stage describing some of the unique challenges encountered during the project development to date.

Rock strata, natural and mining-induced stresses, and structural features can combine to create dangerous instabilities in or around longwall panels. Rock noises and properties variations associated with local stress systems can be used to characterize developing instabilities. Through a learning process at a particular mine, guidelines can be developed to allow the determination of relative risk and timing of a potentially disastrous instability. Once a dangerous instability has been identified, operational modifications can be employed to get through the instability, or active measures such as destressing can be used to mitigate the instability. This paper will discuss how an integrated monitoring system and associated data processing can be used to develop a hazard prediction capability for a longwall mine.

In the center of Florida, fresh water may be found as deep as 2.000 feet, whereas, along the coast it may extend no deeper than about 200 feet. Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

The current understanding of the mechanics of rock fracturing during smooth blasting is largely empirical and qualitative due to an inability to model the dynamic process at the fundamental level. In order to overcome this difficulty, a numerical simulation of smooth blasting is performed using the Dynamic Lattice Network Model. This model is capable of simulating material inhomogeneities and the dynamic evolution of fragmentation at the micromechanical level. In this study, smooth blasting techniques are numerically analyzed to characterize the development of the damage rock zone during explosive fracturing.
