"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

Longwall mining appears very attractive from an engineering standpoint because of its simplicity. The use of one long, continuous face can simplify power distribution, ventilation, and supervision, and minimizes or prevents lost time associated with the tramming of equipment in room-and-pillar systems. Since the longwall system is more amenable to automation, it is inherently safer than room and pillar. Remote control of all face equipment from gate roads will obviate the exposure of men in the face area. Considering what has been said, it seems a paradox that more longwall installations are not found in the United States. However, with favorable mining conditions in relatively level seams of adequate height under shallow cover, it has been possible to develop highly productive, mechanized, room-and-pillar systems. Thus there has been no real incentive to employ longwall in the United States. In Europe, mining companies usually have very little choice between the two systems. Pitching seams of low height located at great depth dictate the use of longwall methods. With depletion of its readily accessible reserves, mining conditions will be similar to those now prevailing in Europe, and an increase in the use of longwall in the United States can be anticipated.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Explosive Excavation Research Office (EERO) of Livermore, California, has been engaged in research and development of excavation techniques using both nuclear and conventional explosives since 1962. Prior to July 1971, this organization was designated the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group. The EERO mission is performed as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission -Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research pro-gram. During the period 1962-1969, the Corps executed many cratering explosions using spherical charges of up to 85 tons of nitromethane to model nuclear excavation concepts and to develop design criteria for the nuclear cratering explosions. The experience gained in these modeling tests suggested that explosive excavation using large chemical explosive charges could be applied to excavation projects as an economical substitute for traditional excavation techniques. Consequently, the Corps' research program was broadened in 1969 to include development of chemical explosive excavation as a construction tool. The term "explosive excavation" denotes the use of large buried explosive charges to produce an excavation by fracturing the material and casting it into a desired configuration. In its simplest form, this technology involves detonation of a single explosive charge buried at the proper depth to produce a crater which is roughly hyperbolic in cross section. The types of craters produced by various depths of burial are illustrated by Figure 1. Single or Multiple rows of charges are used to excavate linear cuts required for water conveyance or navigation channels. .More complex explosive excavations include small craft harbors, railroad and highway cuts, and removal of W1denvater rock barriers to navigation. An experimental study was carried out to compare the results of laboratory column flotation versus conventional flotation for the cleaning of fine coals of different rank and their oxidized samples as well as discrete size fractions. Surface oxidation caused a significant reduction in the flotation yields achieved with both methods. However, the column flotation produced concentrates? of lower ash content. The recovery -size curve achieved with column was similar in shape to that obtained with conventional cell, with superior results in the region of fine fractions. The influence of some column operating parameters was also discussed.

The impact generated by old abandoned mines in Peru have produced mining environmental liabilities, which can generate an impact on the environment. In the search for long-term sustainable solutions, Phytoremediation is presented as an interesting alternative, since it allows the use of Peruvian native plant species for the accumulation of heavy metals. In this paper, we present the results of native high Andean species: Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida. The final metal concentration in the aerial parts and in the roots of each plant show that Stipa Ichu is more efficient to recover Fe, reaching almost 278 times its initial value. In the same way, this plant is efficient to remove Zn, Cu and Cd, reaching maximum values of 64, 39 and 12 times its initial concentration respectively. Cortaderia Nitida turned out to be more efficient to recover Fe, Zn, Cu and Cr, with highest recovery of 250, 117, 39 and 13 times its initial value respectively. Finally, based on translocation factor, Stipa Ichu has better capacities of hyperaccumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr. Cortaderia Nitida only shows hyperaccumulation of Cr.

Technical Papers, Mining Engineering Vol. 49, No. 12, pp. 70-75, Discussion by McIvor, R. and Fink, R. P. We must challenge what we consider to be dubious statements in the above-mentioned article. Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. The commenters may be trying to make the point that the four-hole configurations with respect to the original bench face are not exactly the same. In fragmenting the

Discussion by B. Beatty This is a response to M.J. Hrebar's paper, which tracks in detail the highly productive stripping capabilities of modern large bulldozers at two separate installations. It proves the old adage "economies of scale" and quantifies the advantage of being able to move large loads of dirt over comparatively short haul distances by sliding rather than carrying the load. This discussion examines whether a bulldozer is the most efficient way of using this geotechnical principle. Case 1 - Study eastern US: Contour coal stripping application The energy consumption for the Case 1 mining method (eastern US contour stripping operation) shows the D11 averaged 117 L (31 gal) of diesel fuel per scheduled hour, and produced 333.3 bank m3 (436 bank cu yd) per scheduled hour (0.351 L/m3). Assuming 1 L (0.26 gal) of diesel fuel contains 10.4 kW-hr of energy, the unit expenditure of fuel energy for Case 1 Study was 3.66 kWh/m3. Another way of shifting this material is by using an overburden slusher (OS), as shown in Fig. 1. The OS as shown in Fig. I. The OS is electrically powered and consists of a manned low wall winch (LW ), a remote controlled (radio telemetry) highwall winch (HW) and a hoe. The winches operate to pull the hoe back and forth across the pit. The hoe carries load in the forward direction ahead of a rear mounted blade and returns empty. A spreadsheet (Lotus 123) simulation package, BOSSIM, models the OS operation on a load by load basis over a wide range of pit configurations. The geometry shown in Fig. 2 of the paper was modeled using BOSSI M and the results are summarized in Table1. Table 1 shows a LW with 150 kW (200 hp) and a HW of 120 kW (160 hp) installed power, towing a 15-m3 (19-cu yd) hoe, would accomplish the Case 1 stripping task at about the same scheduled stripping rate (D11=333 m3/hr or 433 cu yd/ hour, OS=342 m3/hr or 447 cu yd/ hour). It was assumed the winches in this equipment have an electromechanical efficiency of 90%. This gives an average electrical energy expenditure rate of 151 kW-hr, and a unit energy expenditure level of 0.44 kWhr/m-3(0.57 cu yd/kWh)-an improvement of 8291%- over the D11 alternative. The energy comparison illustrates the importance of using more efficient electric power if possible, ahead of the internal combustion engine, and delivering power from a fixed ground position rather than through a moving track system. Another important energy observation is the comparative action of the dozer blade and the OS hoe. The former implement continuously digs and spills as it works the load forward. The OS hoe digs the load until full, the blade then lifts due to the contained load pressure and a shear plane forms under the mass, enabling it to slide forward in a force reduced - transporting mode. Economic comparison Table 2 operating cost per scheduled hour and unit cost comparison follows a format used in Tables 2 and 3 of Hrebar's paper and compares Case 1 Study with the OS alternative. Drill and blast costs are kept constant in both cases, although when larger OS units are considered, it is expected these costs will reduce because bigger hoe sizes will permit larger rocks to be transported efficiently.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). In Colombia, more than 15 regions and around 100 municipalities develop gold mining at different scales, and these operations generate mining waste composed of processing fluids and crushed rock with metals and high silica content. Cement production requires clinker, gypsum and other corrective additives. Clinker results from the partial fusion of some minerals including silica. In this study is proposed to evaluate the effect of the use of mining tailings sands from gold mining in the manufacture of clinker. The proposed methodology will allow the characterization of the sands to manufacture a cement specimen and measure its physical and fire properties

Determining the best excavation method is a critical step in successful tunnel construction. In rock tunneling, several factors can dictate the excavation method, such as: (1) rock characteristics, (2) tunnel size and length, (3) nearby utilities/infrastructure, and (4) contractor’s preferred means and methods. This paper discusses the various rock tunnel excavation methods utilized on the Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project (DVT), a project constructed as part of the broader Project Clean Lake in Cleveland, Ohio. The differences between each method’s initial and final lining, geology, and cycle sequence will be analyzed and compared.

My subject this morning is coal liquefaction technology. Actually, coal liquefaction involves a number of technologies in a very complex system. The first slide shows the major components of such a system with arrows to indicate appropriate flows. The components are the facilities for coal feed preparation and handling; the coal hydrogenation or base liquefaction section; facilities for product separation and recovery, and in addition, facilities for the production of hydrogen from coal-based sources. A very rough break- out of the investments involved in these areas is given at the bottom of the slide. Investment is spread about equally among the three areas of operations Another way of looking at it is that the investments in what might be called support facilities are of the same magnitude as the base investment in the hydrogen facilities. Therefore, it is appropriate in a discussion of coal liquefaction technology to treat it as a system composed of a number of technologies. The next slide lists the various functions in the feed preparation section along with an indication of technology status. Storage, crushing, grinding, drying of coal all have been in commercial practice for a number of years. The slurrying and pumping of coal at least in water slurries, is practiced commercially also. The heating of coal slurries in oil to high temperatures under pressure is not in commercial practice and development and testing is going on by a number of people in this area. Some rather complex phenomena occur when coal oil slurries are heated to high temperatures.

The past and present argillaceous rock studies for the U.S. National Waste Terminal Storage Program consist of: (1) evaluation of the geological characteristics of several wide- spread argillaceous formations in the United States; (2) laboratory studies of the physical and chemical properties of selected argillaceous rock samples; and (3) two full-scale in situ surface heater experiments that simulate the emplacement of heat-generating radioactive waste in argillaceous rock.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

"Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) Segmental Tunnel Linings have successfully been used for over 20 years in the UK and have been adopted in a number of high profile projects such as High Speed 1, Crossrail, Thames Tideway, as well as High Speed 2. Tunnel linings and especially SFRC design are not covered in the Eurocodes. This shortage of SFRC tunnel design rules seems to be partially addressed by several international publications. However, in the UK, the ‘design-assisted by testing’ (DAT) approach has also been adopted. The Paper discusses the UK’s best design practice and focuses on the DAT methodology as applied in the case of the 6.9km (4.3miles), 7.8m (25.6 feet) ID Lining for the £635million Lee Tunnel Project. The design approach, the full scale testing at the Building Research Establishment (BRE), and the construction innovations are presented. This experience will be transferred to the £4billion Thames Tideway Tunnel.INTRODUCTIONSteel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) has been used for Tunnel segments for more than 20 years. The first application of SFRC in the UK was for the Heathrow Baggage tunnel (1994). Since then significant size tunnels have been designed and constructed, such as the Jubilee Line (1999) High Speed 1 (CTRL, 2006), Crossrail (2014), Lee Tunnel (2014) and the scheduled 25km Thames Tideway (‘Super Sewer’) and High Speed 2 rail tunnels. However one the main obstacles in achieving streamlined design and improving efficiency are the lack of appropriate design guidelines for SFRC tunnel segments. This issue will – to some extent – be addressed by a number of current documents on tunnel FRC design either being produced by BSi (PAS8810, expected 2016), ACI (544.R) and ITAtech (Design Guideline PCFRC, 2015) in an effort to advance the design of SFRC and take into consideration the recent developments in Steel and Macro-Synthetic FRC technology."

A 2 1/2 inch diameter probe containing a high resolution gamma ray spectrometer was developed for downhole ore grade assays to depths of 6,000 feet. Tests have been conducted on the characteristics of this tool for in-situ determinations of uranium by means of natural gamma ray counting, and of copper, silver, gold, iron and coal quality by means of neutron-induced gamma rays. Application of the technique for improved carbon-oxygen logging in oil fields is promising. The probe contains a cryogenically cooled high purity germanium detector and a 4,000 channel spectrum analyzer. Gamma ray spectra are digitally transmitted up the cable to the truck-mounted data processing system. We found that uranium can be assayed directly in different types of formations independently of the degree of geochemical disequilibrium by counting the relatively weak 1.001 MeV gamma ray of protactinium-234m. Neutron activation work shows that in-situ determinations of copper, silver, iron and coal quality are technically feasible. In carbon-oxygen oil well logging the technique allows an accurate determination of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, silicon, calcium and iron, and shows promise of providing an improved oil/water differentiator.

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN's holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN's coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN's investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company's strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all "hard rock" tonnage mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher where processing begins; over- burden (or waste) is generally truck-hauled from the pit to dump areas. Truck haulage of blasted ore and overburden accounts for some 25 to 50 percent of total mining costs in a typical open pit and commonly is the largest single cost factor. Obviously then, cost reduction efforts should properly focus on improving existing haulage systems and developing new breakthrough techniques for material transport. Continuous flow systems for large tonnages ordinarily will result in a lower cost than batch systems such as truck or rail haulage. Continuous flow with pipelines for liquids and slurries, or conveyors for medium to coarse dry materials (in the -8 in. range) are the accepted economic answers for bulk materials handling over reasonable distances.
