This paper presents the development of ultrasonic grinding technology for material and mineral processing. The principles underlying this new technology, as well as their implementation in two laboratory scale devices are described in detail. Ultrasonic grinding experiment results are discussed with respect to operating variables and the achieved product sizes. Special attention has been given to the electrical energy consumption of the grinder, and an attempt to compare its efficiency with tumbling mills has been made. A mechanical system capable of measuring the specific grinding energy is also described.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

You’ve probably encountered one of those kids who think they know best despite a lack of any real experience.Hi, my name is Erica, and I am a Millennial. We often get a bad rap, sometimes for good reason. But we do have qualities that are often overlooked. For example, I am happy to share with my generation a real desire to make a difference in the world and a commitment to innovation. Does this mean I think we always have good ideas? No – especially not right away. After all, few of us came anywhere near a piece of construction equipment until arriving for our first job, as was the case for me. We may have fancy degrees, but not many of us learned to run a jackleg drill in school.Two weeks after graduating college in 2011, I packed up my bags and moved to New York City to work as a field engineer for Traylor Bros. Inc. on the Queens Bored Tunnels project (Granite/Traylor /Frontier Kemper, JV), part of NYC MTA’s multi-billion dollar Long Island Railroad East Side Access project. It was here I became acquainted with the notorious New York City union workers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of my career thus far was earning the respect of the field supervision and craft workers on this first project.The first time I asked a maintenance mechanic to clean a piece of equipment in accordance with our maintenance protocol I got a flat-out “No.” It was the most powerless I had ever felt. But why should these experienced workers trust a 21-year-old girl with her civil engineering degree and no prior experience? I realized no employee on the job had any reason to listen to me — not until I proved my worth. Fortunately, I arrived on the job site just as we were commissioning the slurry plant for the first tunnel drive. I dove into learning as much about the slurry tunneling process as possible and was able to quickly pick up the ins and outs of running the slurry separation plant. As none of the other engineers or management had first-hand experience on a slurry tunneling job, I soon became the go-to engineer in the slurry plant. No one questioned me if I asked to have something done around the plant after that, or if they did, they quickly learned that I had a convincing answer as to the need for the task. I was even able to play a large role in shaping our slurry monitoring and control methodology."

Mining has always been among the most hazardous of occupations, and with the increasing demand for coal and minerals, safety in mines assumes even greater importance. Worldwide, underground miners are being exposed to noise and respirable dust hazards associated with roof bolt drilling. These hazards are now being understood to cause irreparable damage to the health of miners. The objective of this research was to discover if a Polycrystalline Diamond Cutter (PDC) drill bit generates less respirable dust and hazardous noise than a competing Tungsten Carbide (WC) bit, in dry vacuum drilling. In order to control the drill parameters the drilling tests have been conducted in a laboratory setting. The results were met by determining the quantities of dust and noise generated using each drill bit and analyzing those levels by using monitoring devices and software to collect the data. This paper includes information on experiment setup, equipment used, drilling parameters, and data collected. The test results suggest that there are noticeable trends that the PDC bits produce less dust than WC bits but more testing is needed to substantiate these trends.

Open pit mines are getting deeper with time and transportation expenses are increasing because of the increasing haulage distance. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. Short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has not been explored extensively yet and hardly any model can generate short-term extraction sequence considering an IPCC in place. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to generate short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The objective of the model is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirement, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by strategic plan. The proposed model has been implemented in a hypothetical case study for verification. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC is expected to justify the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short to medium term perspective. A semi-mobile IPCC system with one relocation is considered in the case study.

The Carson Hill mine in Calaveras County, California, was explored and developed by Grandview Resources Inc., as an open-pit heap-leached operation, with production commencing in the fall of 1986. Grandview entered the district in 1983 after a 40-year period of quiescense, the initial contact being by Barden Stevenot, V.F. Hollister, and J.J. Crowhurst. The last dividend declared by the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corp. was 3 1/2$ per share paid in January 1943. The mine was originally discovered in August 1848 by Jim Carson. Preceding the entry by Grandview in 1983, Cyprus Mines explored Carson Hill in 1975, and drill exposed a mineral inventory of 7.3 Mt (7,982,000 tons) averaging 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz per ton) gold. From that time until the Grandview entry, R.W. Thomssen and B.E. Stevenot continued investigations into the potential of the deposit. Grandview successfully investigated many of the metallurgical problems involved with heap leaching the ore. Metallurgical investigations were con- cluded under the direction of R.S. Shoemaker. By November 1984, J.A.C. Ross had prepared a prefeasibility report that included the earliest Grandview investigations. This report concluded that the deposit contained at least 6.8 Mt (7,440,000 tons) of ore that average 1.5 g/t (0.045 oz per ton) gold and that this ore could be mined with a 2: 1 stripping ratio. A final feasibility report was prepared by D.W. Pringle in September 1985. It showed a final ore reserve of 14.7 Mt (16,160,000 tons) of 1.7 g/t (0.049 oz per ton) gold. Attached is a description of the geology of the deposit from an internal report covering Cyprus activity in 1975 and a brief portion of USBM IC 6940 (1937). Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. Assuming, as did Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson, that their numerical model is an accurate predictor, it is clear that the modification incorporated in equation (2) improves the accuracy of preliminary estimates of ground water flow to a pit.[ ] References Jacob, C.E and Lohman. Based on the concept of slope stability analysis, a formula for determining an important parameter required in the mathematical model for the prediction of mining subsidence in hilly terrain has been proposed. The slope geometry and soil physical and mechanical properties of the surface natural slope can all be considered in the formula. Incorporation of this new formula into an existing mathematical model provides an integrated approach in studying ground movement in hilly regions.

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak's potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

This paper presents the results of test work performed with a Pacific Electric Motors (PEM) high intensity magnetic separator (20 kilogauss) , a unit capable of separating weakly, as well as strongly, magnetic minerals in the particle size range of sands to clays. Tests were performed on some 40 industrial minerals. With some minerals excellent separations were attained and with others intermediate and poor separations were accomplished. This study is a preliminary survey and many of the intermediate and poor results can be improved as separation problems are worked out with additional test work. It is demonstrated that with a number of industrial minerals high intensity magnetic separation is a viable beneficiation technique that is economic ally feasible.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs in high sulfur coal and heavy metal mining environments. We show remediation methods using 3D numerical ground water flow models and chemical kinetics of pyrite oxidation for acid leaching of pyrite during air and ground water flow. A recently developed numerical model couples air and water flow with kinetics of iron-reactive bacteria, oxygen transport, specific chemical reaction rates, and pyrite oxidation to calculate migration control of pollution. A model is presented which considers diminution of acid mine drainage in pyrite rich ore bodies by raising the potentiometric surface through a vadose zone to reduce acid mine drainage. A ground water model is presented of an initially saturated mountain, containing an adit, with a sloping ground water table. Ground water recharge consists of snowfall and normal precipitation. Simulations indicate that the historically open adit creates a desaturated mountain above the adit. Significant air saturation ranging from 10-90% oxygen can occur to depths of the adit (-270 m). Remediation consists of plugging the adit, which fill s adit and mountain with water from recharge. Plugging the adit required <10 years for resaturation and rise of the water table in the mountain.

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

Newmont Gold Company began full production in early 1995 at the Carlin East underground mine. The mine is currently producing at the rate of 900 tpd (1.000 stpd). for an annual production of 150.000 ounces. Approximately one hundred twenty five hourly and salary personnel are employed at the project for the estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently utilized at the mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased a new AC-Eickhoff ET-210 Roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June of 1997 and is used in both longhole stope topcut development and cut and fill production at a rate of 225 tpd (250 stpd). The Carlin East mine is operated by Newmont Gold Company. The mine is one of four underground gold mines in production in northeastern Nevada owned by Newmont Gold.

Currently, empirical models are used for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of capacity, cut size (d50,c), water split and partition curve. These models, for example those of Lynch and Plitt, have been developed and checked for hydro cyclones with diameters larger than four inches. For smaller diameter hydrocyclones little empirical modelling has been done. This paper reports extended experimental research on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models has been checked and their accuracy compared. Modifications of the existing models equations are proposed, improving their predictive capability for the small cyclones performance.

Froth flotation technology is the backbone of the minerals pro-cessing industry where minerals are concentrated by selective separa-tion; either direct or in-direct flotation. In direct flotation useful minerals are conditioned to become hydrophobic (water-repellant) and attach to air bubbles while impurities (non-useful particles) remain in water. The hydrophobic particles are transported by air-bubbles to the top froth (foam) layer in flotation tank which can be removed as a concentrate. There are many factors that controls this selective separation process such as: particle’s degree of hydrophobicity, size, mass loading, air holdup and bubble size distribution. Turbulent fluctuation of the slurry in the tank is another important factor that controls the collisions rate between particles and bubbles and hence attachment rates. The turbu-lent fluctuations are measured by the local distribution of turbulent dissipation rates. Conventional flotation machines are restrained by residence time of the slurry that is about 3-5 minutes that results in a large footprint and limits the capacity of flotation plants. The designers of conventional flotation machines try to reduce the footprint of flota-tion tank by scaling up the flotation machines to increase plant throughput. The scale-up process reduces the specif power consump-tion and the local distribution of shear rates and turbulence dissipation rates. This scale-up results in a larger mean bubble size and lower particle-bubble attachment rates.

Kerr-McGee has operated the Ambrosia Lake uranium mill since startup in 1958. Tonnage milled per day has varied from 3500-7000 tons. The mill capacity is currently rated at 7000 tons per day. The process consists of two parallel circuits following crushing and sampling, \\lhich include open circuit rod mill grinding, sulfuric acid leach, cyclone classification, and counter-current washing circuits of sand classifiers and slime thickeners. Pregnant solution is clarified and polished by precoat pressure leaf filters prior to amine solvent extraction. Yellowcake is precipitated from the pregnant strip solution with ammonia, filtered and dried.

This presentation will compare actual work site results for the loading and transport of shot rock for two major tunneling projects in North America. "SCARMAR" (the Canadian subsidiary of S & M Construction) is operating a rail bound Hagglund continuous gathering arm loader in combination with a Hagglund nine car shuttletrain system at the West End of Table Mountain on the B.C. Railway project near Tumbler Ridge, Canada. Al Johnson Construction is operating a Hagglund rubber tired continuous gathering arm loader in combination with haul trucks at the Rocky Mountain Pump Storage Project near Rome, GA. This paper will compare: 1) tunnel and ground conditions, 2) the total work cycle as it relates to mucking and haulage 3) efficiencies and related problems with the two systems 4) mucking and haulage rates 5) operating costs, and 6) recommendations for future large tunnel excavations.
