In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. "The serpentinite massifs of Hitura are located in the municipality of Nivala in Central Finland. The most important sulfide minerals in the ore are pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The ore body consists of amphibolite rocks in contact with serpentinite against mica gneiss. The mean Ni grade of the ore is about 0.7%, and the highest Ni grades have been encountered in close contact. In general, the inner parts of the ore are strongly serpentinized ultramafite and some sulfides have been converted to mackinawite and valleriite. The degree of alteration varies considerably within the ore body and, correspondingly, the grain size of the sulfides varies as well. In this study, flotation tests were done with samples from different zones of the ore body. The flotation test results on the bench scale and plant scale are discussed in terms of the mineralogical features of the ore. Ores in the North Hitura zone differ from those in the South Hitura zone.IntroductionThe Hitura nickel mine, like the entire Nivala area, is part of the Bothnian Svecokarelian schist zone, where numerous Ni-Cu boulders have been discovered since the early 1930s. The Nivala area has therefore been the subject of exploration activities by the Geological Survey of Finland (GSF) and mining companies. The first period of exploration started in 1936, and the Makola nickel deposit, located 3 km south of the Hitura mine, was discovered by GSF in 1937. About 415,000 tonnes of ore were mined at Makola between 1941 and 1954. In 1937, during the exploration and development stage of the Makola mine, boulder tracing and a geophysical survey revealed a significant ultramafic body with some lowgrade Ni-Cu occurrences in the South Hitura zone.In 1961, GSF continued the exploration program in the area and discovered the North Hitura ultramafic complex and its allied Ni-Cu occurrences. In 1964, Outokumpu Oy bought the property and, after underground exploration, comprehensive mineralogical studies, process research and a feasibility study, production started in 1970 (Isohanni et al., 1985)."

The Indentation Fracture technique is being developed as a tool for use in comminution and mineral liberation analysis. Fracture toughness measurements for a number of mineralogical materials were made and comparisons were drawn between these and properties measured with the Ultrafast Load Cell drop weight apparatus. The technique has also been used as a probe to quantify differences in fracture properties at different areas in the microstructure of a material. In both a Utah limestone and a South African quartzite, material near a grain boundary fractures very differently to that in the bulk. Ongoing work is ultimately aimed at producing a comprehensive fracture model for a multi-mineral system based on its micro-fracture characteristics.

The Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) Gravity Pipeline (GP) is the first Progressive Design Build (PDB) tunnel completed in North America. As part of the Regional Environmental Sewer Conveyance Upgrade (RESCU) Program, the tunnel is a key component to replacing and rehabilitating components of the existing conveyance system in San Mateo County, California. The GP consists of a large diameter Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) pipe installed inside a 4.1 m (13.5 ft) inside diameter, 5.3 km (3.3 mile) long precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel. The tunnel was constructed using a 4.6 m (15.2 ft) diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) through heterogenous silts, clays and sands. Construction included two separate TBMlaunches from a centrally located access shaft, and a tunnel alignment below but in close proximity to very soft Young Bay Mud. Settlement criteria and mitigation strategies focused on protection of an existing 1.42 m (56 inch) diameter force main and adjoining structures along the alignment. This paper discusses the results of the theoretical settlement analysis versus the actual observed ground movements, while also presenting mitigation measures and adjustments made during tunneling to reduce the risks of adverse settlement.

The research presented here is part of a project to quantify the differences in the mechanical excavatability of rocks in dry and water-saturated conditions. A series of full-scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests were carried out with a long-bladed single disc cutter on dry and water-saturated sandstone blocks. The muck collected from the cutting tests was analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. The coarseness index (CI), a non-dimensional parameter, was found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n was observed between SE and CI. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock was much lower than found in previous studies. The exponent n is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI was lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time, saturated rock cutting was found to be less energy-intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate, discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

Liquid carbon dioxide can be used as a replacement for organic solvents in the extraction of anionic PGM complexes from an aqueous phase. This can be achieved only if highly carbon dioxide-soluble chelating agents are developed because conventional chelating agent-metal complexes, such as trioctylamine-gold chloride, are not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide (although trioctylamine is CO,-soluble). Our novel CO,-soluble chelating agents have a fluorinated tail and a conventional amine head group. Both the chelating agent and the chelating agent-metal complex are soluble at ambient temperature at pressures between 7-35 MPa. Equilibrium constants in the 105 range have been measured (in Freon 113, a low pressure screening liquid for carbon dioxide), indicating that these compounds will strongly bind the metal chloride. For example, 93% of Pt-chloride was extracted into Freon 113 using a 3.5:1I ratio of a double-tailed fluoroalkyl amine chelating:metal chloride. 88% recovery of Pt-chloride into liquid carbon dioxide was achieved using the same chelating agent at a 3.5:1 ratio.

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than two feet thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disc filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disc filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some difficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compouned after rains.

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These methods included a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal extraction side of the long wall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. The translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust control effectiveness up to 60 m downstream of the shearer in both the laboratory experiments and a long wall field evaluation, provided the mesh barrier remains relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust control effectiveness in the laboratory and subsequently was not field tested.

A spatial modeling technique based on the Bayesian neural network (BNN) is proposed. Incorporation of the Bayesian method for posterior probability of the output parameter helps calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimate. Parameters of the BNN model were selected using a grid search algorithm. The expected value and the variance of block support were calculated by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution at discretized points within the block. The BNN model was validated by applying it to the Walker Lake data set and comparing the results with ordinary kriging results. The comparison revealed that the proposed BNN method performs marginally better than ordinary kriging. The variance map is less smooth than with ordinary kriging, and the proportional effect is less in the BNN-based model than in the ordinary kriging model. The developed BNN model was applied to the Coho block of a placer gold deposit in Nome, AK. Results reveal that the BNN model is globally biased for the Coho block and underestimates the sample mean. The grade volume curve was developed by calculating the block mean and block variance after discretizing the block into a number of points and applying the BNN model to each discretized point.

Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwall method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gateroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event model of roadway development can help assess how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of variability and uncertainty in operations. One of the major delays associated with roadway development is caused by the shuttle car due to its cyclic stop-start nature. Shuttle car travelling paths and machine interactions are normally constraint by the mine?s roadway layout and mine safety issues. This paper presents simulations of shuttle car route options which can be considered at the design stage to minimize the cycle time of a shuttle car as part of a general roadway development simulation model developed using 3D Flexsim.

In 2007, Rosebud Mining Company (RMC) opted to extend the reserve base of Tracy Lynne Mine by developing through a sandstone channel. The extension provided access to approximately 6 million additional recoverable tons (approximately 8 years of mining) which originally had been deemed inaccessible. An evaluation of the mine?s existing ventilation system, which was designed to meet the needs of the original limited reserve, concluded that two ventilation shafts would likely be required to adequately ventilate the projected workings in the expanded reserve. To assist in the evaluation, a ventilation model of the mine was developed using Ohio Automation?s ?ICAMPS MineVent? software based on field data from Tracy Lynne Mine, prior ventilation survey experience at similar RMC mines, and relevant published sources. Model results suggested that the most economical shafts would be an 8-ft diameter return and a 4-ft diameter intake. Unfortunately, issues related to property leasing and shaft site permitting caused construction delays. Therefore, the model was also used and proved to be effective in prioritizing interim ventilation upgrades which could be implemented in order to maintain coal production. Model results indicated that the best interim upgrades included rehabilitating restricted entries and damaged stoppings and replacing the main fan with a higher pressure fan. From late 2010 to mid-2012, all interim upgrades and shafts were implemented. Current models and mine experience indicate that ventilation will not be the limiting factor for mining the additional reserve.

Pressure oxidation is a hydrometallurgical oxidative pretreatment for refractory ores, such as sulfide ores. Here, simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments were carried out on a pyritic ore from the Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico. Mineral characterization, agitation leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic testing results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 40–80 °C, oxygen pressure of 87.5–200 psi, and cyanide concentration of 0.8–1.2 wt% in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. A dissolution rate of 81–86% was achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 wt% NaCN, for 1 h.

In this paper, response surface methodology was applied to optimize the experimental conditions for the wet grinding of synthetic rutile. The effects of parameters such as rotation speed, solids concentration and duration of grinding on grinding efficiency were systematically investigated and the process conditions were optimized, using a nonlinear regression model based on central composite design. The statistical analysis of the results showed that in the range studied, the grinding efficiency of synthetic rutile was significantly affected by the rotation speed of the conical ball mill. According to results from analysis of variance, the value of the determination coefficient (R2=0.9989) indicates that the predicted values are found to be in good agreement with experimental values. The optimized experimental conditions were as follows: a rotation speed of 350 rpm, a solids concentration of 27.31% and a grinding time of 50.31 min, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the predicted grinding efficiency of 94.79% is obtained. The experimental values from the validation experiments were well within the predicted value of the model.

However, there is a lack of a sectorspecific CE framework providing guidance to decision-makers in evaluating promising activities. A gap, which this contribution aims to address.

A review of the history of boosters is given with examples of the prominent types that have been made commercially. The performance and design features of protected core boosters are discussed in detail. A new gel booster is discussed with its advantages to the mining industry. Booster size, hole configuration, performance and safety aspects are reviewed. Important features of boostering in above ground and underground blasting are related to an economic analysis. This presentation will cover different types of boosters commonly used in mining. However, for the purpose of this paper a few terms need to be defined to clarify the action of different parts of a priming system. Booster* - "Any unit of explosive or blasting agent to be used in a charged hole for the purpose of perpetuating or intensifying the initial detonation". Primer* - "A unit, package or cartridge' of explosives containing a detonator or detonating cord which is used to transmit detonation to other explosives or blasting agents". Detonator - A device for initiating a detonation from a flame or a small electric current, the former being represented by a fuse cap and the latter an electric blasting cap.

This paper describes the facilities at Pointe Noire, Quebec that Wabush Mines utilizes for the receipt, distribution, stockpiling and shipping of iron ore concentrate and pellets. The main topics to be covered will be: 1. - General description 2. - Concentrate receiving facilities 3. - Conveying circuits 4. - Stockpiling 5. - Vessel loading GENERAL DESCRIPTION The map of the eastern Quebec - western Labrador area as shown in Appendix #1 shows the location of Wabush Mines properties. You will note the Scully Mine located at Wabush Lake, Labrador, 235 miles north of the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Our neighbors, the Iron Ore Company of Canada have their properties further north at Shefferville, near by at Carol Lake and at Sept-Iles. To the Southwest, our other neighbors, Quebec Cartier Mining, have their iron ore processing facilities and their terminus on the St-Lawrence at Port Cartier. Concentrates are prepared at the scully Mine by mining, crushing, grinding, concentrating, drying and high tension separation for shipment by rail to Pointe Noire, Quebec. Pointe Noire is situated across the bay from the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec on the North Shore of the St-Lawrence River. The concentrate consists of 66% iron, 2 ¼ percent silica and practically no moisture, permitting the use of specially constructed railroad cars and handling facilities to convert the concentrate into pellets, the final product.

Thorite and rare earth deposits in the Lemhi Pass area of southeastern Lemhi County, Idaho, are contained along complex shear and fracture zones and in reopened gold-quartz veins and copper lodes in quartzitic and phyllitic rocks of the Pre-cambrian belt series. Some of the shear and fracture zones are several tons of feet across and comprise broad zones of irregularly mineralized rock. These lodes contain a notable concentration of thorium and rare earth elements along with considerable amounts of barium, .potassium, calcium, iron, aluminum, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. The principal minerals are thorite, locally allanite, monazite, xenotime (?), apatite, specular hematite, barite, potash feldspar, occasionally calcite and quartz. Exept for some of 'the specular hematite, barite, reddish feldspar, calcite and quartz, the minerals are not distinguishable without the microscope. The thorite and locally allanite were deposited first, then the monazite and other phosphates, which were in turn followed successively by barite, potash, feldspar, calcite, and quartz. In exceptional cases, deposition of thorite and specular hematite was repeated after the feldspar. Some of the deposits contain several percent thoria, but the average os generally under one percent. The rare earth content is comparable with that of the thoria. The deposits appear to be of hydrothermal origin and are probably related genetically to late Cretaceous or early Tertiary igneous activity, manifested locally by a few dioritie and lamprophyric dikes.

Pneumatic stowing was first introduced in longwall mining in the middle twenties. Since that time it has advanced through many stages of development, particularly abroad, which have greatly improved its efficiency and contributed to its growing use. Pneumatic stowing originated in coal mining but has also been adopted in metal mining. This paper discusses the techniques of pneumatic conveying of. stowing material and equipment and applications of pneumatic stowing.
