A mathematically simulated modeling technique is used in this U.S. Bureau of Mines paper to represent a hypothetical mining operation with existing mining technology and prevalent mining costs. Mining scenarios are prepared and evaluated for potential benefits and costs available through computer-assisted mining. Base criteria, parameters, and methodology are described.

A method has been developed in the USSR for processing the low-grade high-silica raw material by sintering the aluminacontaining mixes, which is widely used both as a principal process and in combination with the Bayer process. The process parameters were obtained on the basis of a study of interaction and equilibrium states of the individual profiles of a multi-component system Na20-A1203-Fe203-CaO-Si02 at the sintering temperatures. The compositions and melting temperatures of eutectics of the individual profiles are given. It is shown that the most easily meltable mix is one having a red mud as the main component. The variations are given of the sinter physical characteristics and recovery of the useful components with the sintering temperature. Considerations are given on selection of a sinter leaching flowsheet and directions are shown for improving a series method of processing the low-grade raw material.

A sulfidic flotation tailings ore, containing 1.14 gpt Au and 242.53 gpt Ag, was treated by low temperature chlorination roasting followed by cyanide or chloride leaching. Eighty per cent of Ag was recovered by cyanide leach when the ore was roasted at 350°C with 50 kg/ton calcium chloride. About seventy per cent of Au was made cyanide amenable by chlorination roasting at 400°C. A better Ag recovery, ninety per cent or over, was achieved by chloride (NaCl+HCl) leach. However, Au recovery was very poor by chloride leach. Ferric chloride, calcium chloride, and cupric chloride were compared as chlorinating agents for their effect on Au and Ag recovery. The study found that low temperature chlorination roasting is very effective for recovering Ag associated with stibnite and stannite. The best chlorinating agent for the test ore was found to be calcium chloride. Parallel roasting-leaching tests indicated that chlorination roasting was far superior over oxidation roasting for both gold and silver recovery.

Collectorless flotation of sulphide minerals from Lyon Lake ore (Mattabi Mines Ltd.) has been studied both in the laboratory and plant. Among the four major minerals chalcopyrite showed the greatest response to collectorless flotation, followed by galena. Flotation of sphalerite and pyrite was minimal. Collectorless flotation was influenced by pulp potential and pH. Experiments using different gas compositions showed collectorless flotation was promoted when the pulp potentials were greater than about 0 mV (SCE). The study of the effect of depressants showed that SO2 at pH < 8.0 depresses both galena and chalcopyrite but at pH 9.5 flotation of chalcopyrite recovers. Use of NaCN preferentially depressed chalcopyrite compared to galena. Preliminary results from plant tests at Mattabi Mines Ltd. confirm that collectorless flotation occurs and that it is preferential for chalcopyrite and to a lesser extent galena. Practical implications of collectorless flotation in plant practice are discussed. A critical factor will be silver recovery.

"INTRODUCTION Barrick Goldstrike underground mine is located in Northern Nevada on the Carlin trend. The underground mine produces approximately 1.5 to 1.8 million tons a year and approximately 400,000 ounces of gold a year. The mine is comprised of two main mining methods, underhand drift and fill and long hole stopeing. The mass blast project stated in 2012 as Value in Use project between Barrick, Southwest Energy and Orica, the goal of this project is to be able to blast an entire drilled stope in one blasting event instead of taking multiple blasts. This will improve productivity by eliminating intermediate blasts, reducing additional blast time, eliminate drill hole cleaning due to the previous blast. Project implantation started in the fourth quarter of 2013 and mass blasting has been common practice throughout all of 2014. STOPPING PRACTICE AT GOLDSTRIKE BEFORE MASS BLAST PROJECT The production from the Goldstrike mine is approximately 70% from stopes. The timely completion of all stoping blocks is imperative to maintaining the plan, delays in the execution of any particular block can have detrimental ripple down effects as neighbouring stoping blocks become delayed. Before the implementation of this project the standard practice for Goldstrike was to: 1. Drill the entire stope 2. Blast a bottom shot, normally between 10 feet and 20 feet off the bottom of the slot rings. This would be mucked out before the next shot 3. Blast a pull through shot, this included the raise and one or two production rings. Again mucking this out before the next shot 4. Blast production rings, one or two more blasts depending on stope size. In most cases between each of these blasts the holes in the other rings of the stope would have to be cleaned. This meant either cleaning manually using air and water, or mechanically cleaning with a bench drill. In many cases this resulted in delays in completing the stoping block."

BP Minerals America (BPMA) has completed its $400 million modernization of Kennecott Utah Copper&apos;s Bingham Canyon mine. Modernized facilities include the in-pit crusher, conveyor, ore storage area, concentrator, ore pipe-line, and tailings pipeline. With modernization, Kennecott will achieve substantial cost reductions. Bingham Canyon is now one of the lowest cost copper producers in the world. And the mine will continue to provide jobs and income in Utah for another 30 years or more. The Modernization Project began in February 1986. The work took 33 months. In late 1987, the construction force peaked at 1100 workers. Kennecott Utah Copper now employs a permanent work force of 2100 employees. Less equipment and more efficiency The modernization work has increased the scale of the facilities that transport and process copper ore. A large, continuous transport system has replaced multiple haulage units. Fewer but larger pieces of equipment have replaced many crushing, grinding, and flotation units. The result is less maintenance, fewer employees, and improved metal recoveries. About one-third of the $400 million modernization project is directed at improving ore movement by eliminating rail transport. The new concentrator accounts for the remaining two-thirds of the modernization investment. The modernized plant was started up in stages. In February, ore was fed to the crusher. By the end of March, the three grinding lines were operating and the flotation circuit was producing copper concentrate. In July, the design through-put rate of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) was reached. October saw the achievement of targeted metal recoveries that corresponded to the fully modernized operation. It is estimated that Bingham Canyon will annually produce 181 kt (200,000 st) of refined copper, 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of gold, 71 t (2.3 million oz) of silver, and 5.4 kt (12 million lb) of molybdenite. Current Bingham Canyon production is about 97 kt/d (107,000 stpd) and a similar amount of overburden. Some 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) of ore are processed through the in-pit crusher and 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of ore are transported by rail. The Bingham Canyon mine has yielded more than 11 Mt (12 million st) of refined copper. In 1863, precious metals - silver-bearing lead - were first discovered in Bingham Canyon. What was once a mountain is now a huge open pit. In fact, the mine is the world&apos;s largest man made excavation. The pit is some 4 km (2.5 miles) wide and 0.8 km (0.5 miles) deep. Since the pit began operating in 1906, more than 4.5 Gt (5 billion st) of material have been removed. Modernized facilities Electric 21 m3 (27 cu yd) or 23 m3 (30 cu yd) shovels are used to load the haulage trucks. Both 154 t (170 st) and 181 t (200 st) trucks are used to haul the ore to a mobile, in-pit crusher. The crusher replaces three crushers located at the old concentrators. There are two dumping locations at the new crusher, which can handle two trucks a minute. The 1.5 x 2.7 m (60 x 109 in.), 745 kW (1000 hp) Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher reduces the ore to 254 mm (10 in.) size or less and delivers it to the conveyor. The crusher and conveyor systems are capable of handling 9 kt/h (10,000 stph) of ore.

In aging tunnels, wall and roof deterioration can eventually result in defects that must be detected and repaired to maintain safe structural conditions. In investigating tunnel defect conditions, a specialized FM radar system was developed with a programmable VHF and UHF operating sweep range for optimizing the penetration and measurement capabilities. The new FM radar technology was tested in two aging brick-lined tunnels in New York City. Test results showed that FM radar signals could penetrate eight courses of water-saturated brick and that the original steel liner outside the tunnel walls was intact.

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an intelligent system for roof&apos; control that uses both an expert system and neural networks to improve the capability of mining engineers to evaluate roof support effectiveness for ground control in coal mines. The expert system com- pares roof support capacities with the support requirements estimated to be necessary to maintain entry stability. It does this by evaluating the results of tests on various types of roof support and establishing the maximum allowable load according to anchorage capacity and yield strength of the support. After the user enters geological information (rock properties, geometry of the opening, in situ stresses, bolt pattern parameters, etc. ), the expert system compares the predicted required loading to the roof support capacity and gives the operator advice on the adequacy of the design and how improvements could be made. A good source of the real-time data necessary to allow the expert system to make decisions will come from a roof bolting machine being developed by the Bureau of Mines. Researchers have collected data from a Western coal mine on drill bit position, penetration rate thrust, torque, and rotation rate. Using this information, two neural net- works were developed to identify different types of strata and features in a mine roof such as rock type, rock compressive strength and joint characteristics. The result is a system that can assist a mining engineer with design information that can be constantly updated as mining progresses.

In 1990, US mine production of barite increased 54.1 %. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 27.6%. Imports were about the same as 1989. World mine production in¬creased 12.3%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 12.7%, according to the Bureau. The declared value, cif US port, of all imported crude barite during the year 1990 increased from $40.27/t ($36.54 per st) in 1989 to $40.61/t ($36.84 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 82% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 750/c, of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This includes barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating, (1010), was 16.2% more than the 1989 average of 869 in the US.

Sao Bento Mlnerai;;ao Mine (SBM), located 100 kms northwest of Belo Horlzante, Brazil, was commissioned In 1987t1l to produce 185 kg per month of gold from 240 tpd of refractory sulphide flotation concentrate. The concentrate Is processed by a Sherrill Gordon design pressure oxidation circuit followed by conventional CIL gold recovery process (Flgur .. J). The original plant design foresaw expansion to 480 tpd, and In this regard the acidic effluent neutralisation, CIL and carbon circuits were designed for future expansion to treat the higher tonnage. The pressure oxidation section was sized for 240 tpd with the Intention to double the Installed plant equipment to provide 480 tpd capacity when required. This decision was based In part on the novelty of pressure oxidation to treat refractory sulphide concentrates in 1984 when the process design was finalised. General Mining, Metals & Minerals (Pty) Ltd (GENMIN), has been actively Involved for the past 30 years in the development of bacterial process for the oxidation of refractory gold concentrates; the results of this development program have provided the registered process BIOx®. The successful Implementation of BIOx® technology for treatment of refractory gold concentrates at GENMIN's Fairview Mine In October 1986t2l, as well as the substantial experience accumulated in laboratory and pilot testing of some 40 other sulphide concentrates, Justified reconsideration of the oxidation process best suited to provide the Incremental sulphide oxidation capacity planned for SBM.

Thank you Mr. Chairman. It was a generous introduction. It allays some of the puzzlement I have of being a minority among the speakers at this conference. I see from the program that only two of us have been asked to speak on topics in keeping with an election year. Instead of reporting facts on past events as most speakers are, J. W. Wilson, of Consolidation Coal, and I have been designated to forecast the future. Forecasting in an election year implies a liberty to fabricate at will, hallucinate, fantasize, stretch fact and fancy and generally prognosticate without regard for the consequences. Since I&apos;m not seeking your votes, promises aren&apos;t mandatory. This will be done with supreme confidence stemming from profound wisdom and a foolproof crystal ball. So instead of soliciting your vote, I&apos;ll simply penetrate 24 years of tomorrows, which may not be much different than some of us remembering the later hours of last night. My remarks do not draw upon Gulf planning department projections. Instead they are a roll of the dice of personal conjecture to stretch your imaginations on oil shale mining through the year 2000. In this regard, it is sobering to keep in mind that it has been in my lifetime that investors wouldn&apos;t risk a dollar on paperback books, motels, supermarkets, or drive-in restaurants. And only thirty years ago it was predicted by an eminent Ivy League professor

A traveler driving across desolate central Nevada to the Round Mountain property can easily identify with turn- of-the-century prospectors seeking a fortune, or at least an existence, from the high desert. But now a shadow passing overhead is as likely a sophisticated fighter aircraft from Stillwater Naval Air Station as a circling bird, and the famous trails west show only as historical markers along the highway. Even the approximately 400- km (250-mile) trip southeast from Reno or northwest from Las Vegas takes hours now, not days. And the camps of Round Mountain’s early prospectors have been replaced by one of the world’s largest gold heap-leaching operations. While Round Mountain’s uniqueness begins with its scale, it doesn’t end there. Consider the mine’s low cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold, made possible by a new dedicated (not reusable) leach pad. Also, the operation’s degree of automation means that ore dropped in the south crusher system is not manually handled until it is stripped from the pads. There is the bonus of a geothermal field that is tapped to heat the leach solutions in the winter. And, of course, there was that “unexpected” hitch expected in all mining operations. For Round Mountain, it meant buying a gravity plant to process the gold nuggets discovered last summer in a fault gouge.

Short Historical Review Tunnelling in Germany is as old as it is in other industrial countries. Until the middle of this century German contractors had no chance to work continuously in this business except if they were operating internationally. Since 1960, however, tunnelling has been a growing market domestically. The reasons for this growth have been both in the growing demand of traffic routes and also in an increasing environmental consciousness, which tries to transfer any cause of disturbance underground. Tunnelling engineers of course don&apos;t complain about this trend. As almost every German city is built upon water-bearing soft ground, shields have been used soon after they were first successfully utilized in Great Britain and the United States. Until the seventies lining systems for shield tunnels were predominantly either cast iron segments or concrete segments for primary support combined with different sealing systems and a secondary concrete lining cast-in-place. Steel ribs and timber lagging for primary support has not been utilized in Germany, since the owners don&apos;t accept timber to be left in the ground. In 1973, for the first time, permanent linings were constructed with watertight segment rings of precast concrete (Fig. 1). This lining was developed as an economical solution for use with slurry shields in noncohesive, water-bearing soils that required an immediately watertight lining. Extruded linings have a similar effect, although these still need a secondary lining

Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn&apos;t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi&apos;s remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won&apos;t guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation&apos;s underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation&apos;s under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States&apos; raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. This paper presents the results of laboratory and pilot plant investigations for the development of efficient methods of beneficiating hematite ores from the Krivoi Rog, Kursk Magnetic Anomoly, Olenogorsk, and other localities. The tests included gravity, magnetic (in a high intensity field), flota¬tion, and magnetizing roasting methods. It was possible to develop efficient beneficiation methods depending on the mineral composition of the ore and degree of dissemination of ore and gangue minerals. The paper shows the relationship between the iron silicate and quartz content of the ore and the technologic indices of the various beneficiation methods. Some of the conclusions based on these investigations and the technical and economic computations related to the cost of one ton of pig iron produced from concentrates obtained by the various beneficiation methods are: 1. If the hematite ore is not disseminated uniformly, it is expedient to use a combined gravity and flotation process. Ore particles up to 50 am. in size are beneficiated by gravity (heavy suspension, jigging, and others) and yield a lump concentrate. The middlings from this process are recrushed and floated; 2. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing small quantities (less than 5 percent) of iron silicates, are most effectively beneficiated by flotation. Anionic (sulphate soap, tall oil emulsion with various foam depressors) as well as cationic collectors may be used. Depending on the mineral and chemical composition of the ore, it is possible to obtain concentrates containing up to 65 percent iron with an extraction up to 94 percent; 3. Finely disseminated, mixed hematite-magnetite ores may be beneficiated by flotation or a magnetic separation-flotation process; 4. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing large quantities of iron silicates and earthy hematite ores are most efficiently beneficiated by the magnetizing roasting method. This method will yield concentrates containing up to 68 percent iron with extractions up to 90 percent. Although beneficiation by the magnetizing roasting process is costly, it will nonetheless, when employed on this type of ore, yield the least expensive pig iron.
