The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. Also found in minor amounts are scheelite, apatite, epidote, calcite, tourmaline, and some arsenides (notable loellingite). Quartz

The purpose of this paper is to give recommendations for utilization of water resources in a mining region, considering also water supply and environment; the case study of mining for coal and bauxite under the karstic aquifer of the Transdanubian mountain of Hungary is used to illustrate the approach, which consists in formulating a static multiobjective control model and solving it by compromise programming. The three activities of regional mineral resource exploitation, water supply and environmental protection are represented by different objectives which cannot be expressed in commensuerable units. Thus, a solution which is optimal for one objective is usually far from being optimal with respect to the other two objectives. As a result, we are not seeking an optimal solution for the conjunctive regional system, but a good compromise, trade-off or "satisfactum" (1), (2).

Increasing costs, falling grades and a low gold price have caused severe problems for many of South Africa's gold mines. The need to maximise efficiency is extremely urgent. This paper describes the use of column flotation cell s to scavenge significant quantities of additional gold from flotation plant residues; in particular, very fine particles of free gold not recovered by conventional flotation. Experimental gold- specific collectors enhanced gold recovery significantly. The paper also reports the results of other plant trials, carried out on a variety of ores.

The flotation behavior of a -28 mesh Pittsburgh No. 8 coal sample is investigated through the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy in conjunction with Image Analysis. Release analysis is used to generate the flotation products, which are then characterized to provide the particulate composition in terms of pyrite, mineral matter and carbonaceous material. The results of this investigation indicate that the material recovered in the first stage of release analysis tends to be well-liberated carbonaceous material. This is followed by an increase in the recovery of middlings and fines in the later stages of the process. Any free carbonaceous material remaining in the tailings from the release analysis test tends to be associated with the very fine sizes (-400 mesh). Pyrite recovery is attributed to the hydrophobicity provided by small inclusions of carbonaceous material, since the amount of truly liberated pyrite particles (i.e., 100% pyrite) present in the sample is found to be negligible.

Operational grade modelling is a technique that uses production data to run daily updates of property models. It will enable mining engineers to use property predictions based on the most recently acquired data as support for quality control and decision making. The approach necessitates that the properties of the run- of-mine material can always be attributed to individual mining blocks or charges. The software employed must be highly reliable, because a system failure or the loss of data could seriously affect the mine's quality management. An operational grade modelling system has been developed for the Breitenau magnesite mine. It makes use of the Linear Octree Based Property Modelling system which was conceived and realised at the Free University of Berlin. This paper describes the system design and gives an account of the experiences during the first six months since system start-up.

Flotation of oxide minerals is controlled by a number of factors, such as surface potential and solubility of the mineral, concentration and type of various inorganics, properties of the collector, pH, ionic strength and temperature. The role these factors play depends on the mechanisms of adsorption of the collector inorganics or polymer additives. The major mechanisms include electrostatic interactions, chemical adsorption, chain-chain interaction between adsorbed collector species and modifications of the surface by inorganics. In real systems, flotation is, however, markedly affected by various other processes, including aging of the minerals, surface precipitation of the collector on the mineral and associative interactions between various collector species leading to highly surface active, for example, ionomolecular complexes. These effects are reviewed here with selected examples.

The flotation of coal in the fie and coarse particle size ranges presents particular problems. Fine or ultra-fine coal less than 100 microns presents a challenge to conventional flotation machines because the rate of capture of the coal particles can be very low, so longer residence times are needed. Also, conventional mechanical cells are not normally designed with froth properties in mind. Froth drainage may be inadequate, leading to excessive entrainment of ash. The upper limit of flotation of coal is normally put at about 500 um (30 mesh). It appears that, in mechanical cells, coarser particles tend to be torn away from bubbles in the turbulent environment created by the impeller. In this paper, results are presented from plant trials of a high-intensity flotation column of novel design, namely the Jameson cell. Extensive trials have been conducted on coal slurries with a top size of around 1 mm. Size-by size analysis shows that it is possible to achieve high yields of low ash product over the whole particle size range.

Dredging and Flooding was completed on the Falconbridge Limited "New Tailings Area" in the period from 1996 through 1998, as part of their site closure measures. Part of the decision making process and closure planning was water quality prediction, including oxidation and diffusion modelling. The purpose of this modeling was to define the potential water quality that would result during and after dredging. A significant body of research on the geochemistry and oxidation kinetics of this site had been compiled. The results of the modeling provide practical insight on the potential water quality that may be expected. Water quality in the pond has steadily improved since flooding was completed with the exception of short term peaks during spring runoff. Aquatic vegetation is appearing through natural recovery and transplanting of local species, and colonies of minnows are now observed in the ponds.

Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

Introduction Rod mills are horizontal, cylindrical, rotating, tumbling mills in which steel rods, that are usually about 6 in. shorter than the length of the grinding chamber, are used for grinding media. Fig. 33 shows a cutaway view of a rod mill. Rod mills were first used around 1910 because of their ability to grind in open circuit, consistently produce a uniformly sized prod¬uct, give greater continuous availability, and give lower maintenance costs. They have basically replaced roll crushers and coarse grinding ball mills in comminution flowsheets. The present 20-ft limit on rod length, based on rod manufacturing methods, and the pulp flow char¬acteristics, that influence mill capacity, have established the maximum rod mill sizes' of 15 x 21 Vs ft using 20-ft rods and drawing from 2,200 to 2,300 hp. Rod Mill Uses. The principal uses for rod mills are: preparing feed for ball or pebble mills, grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand, preparing coarse agitator feed for leaching operations, and for primary grinding circuits, particularly in industrial mineral applications. Wet grinding is the most frequently used grinding process for rod milling. There are a few special cases where dry rod milling is used. Preparing feed for ball or pebble mills is the most common use for rod mills. In ferrous and nonferrous ore concentrators, wet open-circuit grinding is used to prepare ball-mill feed. Figs. 34 thru 37 show the four basic grinding circuits used in these concentrators. In rod mill-ball mill grinding circuits, where the rod-mill discharge contains 25% or more of the grinding circuit product-size material, the rod-mill discharge can be fed to the ball- or pebble-mill classifier as shown in Fig. 34. This is the most frequently used rod mill-ball mill circuit in the nonferrous ore concentrators. In a few concentrators such as Anaconda's Weed concentrator,55 the rod mill discharges to one classification stage which makes the same or a slightly coarser particle-size cut as the classifiers used to close the ball- or pebble¬mill circuits, as shown in Fig. 35. In concentrators where rod mill-ball mill circuits are used to grind low grade magnetic iron ores such as Reserve Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn.; Erie Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; Eveleth Taconite Co., Forbes, Minn.; US Steel, Mt. Iron, Minn. and Atlantic City, Wyo.; Inland Steel-Jackson County Iron Co., Black River Falls, Wis.; and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Adams mine, Kirkland Lake, Ont., the rod mills discharge to rougher magnetic separators (cobbers), the concentrates from which are fed to a ball milling stage as shown in Fig. 36. The same basic circuit is also used with gravity concentra¬tion methods such as spirals (Hanna Mining Co., Groveland, Mich.), tables (St. Joe Minerals, Bonne Terre, Mo.), and jigs. When the rod-mill discharge contains less than 25% of the grind¬ing circuit product size, this indicates an ore that does not readily produce the fines needed to help carry the coarse feed into the ball charge. When this occurs, the fines in the rod-mill discharge are needed in the ball mill or pebble mill so the rod-mill discharge flows direct to the second-stage mills as shown in Fig. 37. Rod mills are used to make feed for open-circuit ball mills such as those used in wet grinding cement raw material (American Cement, Brennan Ave¬nue plant, Detroit, Mich., and Port Huron, Mich., plant, and at the South Dakota State Cement plant, Rapid City, S. Dak.). Grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand is used in areas where natural sand of the proper particle size gradation required to make concrete is not availa¬ble. Three-quarter inch crushed aggregate is ground to 4 mesh using center peripheral-discharge rod mills (Fig. 38) operating in open circuit. US Corps of Engineers specifications state that the sand product be 93-100% passing 4 mesh and contain no more than 3-7% passing 200 mesh. It may be necessary to classify the rod-mill discharge to remove any excess -200 mesh sand produced in the rod mill. Particu¬larly when processing aggregate with high abrasion indices, center peripheral-discharge rod mills are used instead of hammer mills, fine bowl crushers, and crushing rolls for the production of specification sand. Environmental regulation of the United States copper industry has evolved significantly over the past three decades and the pace of that evolution is expected to escalate dramatically during the 1990's. The paper examines, from a corporate perspective, current environmental regulation and expected trends including the development of Subtitle D regulations for mineral extraction, beneficiation and processing activities under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The paper concludes by exploring existing and potential impacts on copper companies in complying with the changing environmental regulatory scheme and responsible and progressive precautionary measures companies should consider to address these issues while simultaneously addressing often competing socioeconomic demands.

In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

Industries dependent on pyrometallurgical processing generally find themselves facing a common set of problems, namely, serious environmental restrictions, heavy capital requirements for new facilities and for plant modernization, the certainty of rapidly escalating fuel costs, and the uncertainty of fuel availability. To remain competitive, it has become clear to industry that a new dimension of attention must be given to assuring the maximum performance from plant facilities already in place and from those that are built in the future. In the last decade or so, in response to these needs, there has been an acceleration in the development of new pyrometallurgical process concepts. Their application, though spotty, is increasing. A common factor in this developing base of technology is the need for effective process control. Digital control is an indispensable element of meeting the challenge. We cannot make the point, however, by looking to a general survey of instrumental control of pyrometallurgical processes. Computer control is in its awkward adolescence. Its application is so new that only isolated applications can highlight the trends. For this reason, the authors have chosen to focus on the nonferrous smelting industry to illustrate the status of pyrometallurgical processing and control. We believe this approach will best meet the interests of most readers of this edition and the background of the authors.

The thickness of the laminated beam modeled in this study is based on bridging potential and TDR measurements. The laminated beam stiffness is based on the effective stiffness of an equivalent transformed section. The maximum deflection of this near-surface laminated beam is compared with the maximum measured surface subsidence. The spreadsheet provides a rational technique to graphically display the character of the overburden and potentially allows prediction of a subsidence factor based on boring logs and the proposed mine plan. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau), utilizes a commercially available computer spreadsheet program in combination with a modified version of Bieniawski's Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system to characterize the geology overlying high extraction coal mines. The spreadsheet program calculates a RMR for each bed based on the lithology, thickness, and engineering properties, which are determined from boring logs and laboratory tests. Once the RMR is calculated the spreadsheet has two major functions. First, the spreadsheet calculates values used to graphically represent the character of each individual bed in the overburden. It calculates an in situ deformation modulus using an empirical rela¬tionship between the modulus and the RMR and then uses this effective modulus along with additional parameters that are based on mine geometry to calculate the bending stiffness and bridging potential for each bed. Second, the spreadsheet creates a transformed section that allows groups of beds to be modeled as an elastic beam. It then calculates a bridging potential for the entire rock mass. The bridging potential of the rock mass is a single value that takes into account both the geology of the overburden and the geometry of the mine. It seems reasonable that there would be a strong correlation between the bridging potential, the overburden response to high extraction mining, and the subsidence ratio. The results presented in this paper focus on the relationship between the bridging potential of individual beds and the deformation measured using Time Domain Reflectometry (TOR). Subsurface displacements measured over seven high extraction coal mines in southern Illinois were correlated with the bed stiffness and bridging potential profiles. Based on these correlations it was evident that the process of caving and subsidence over these high extraction mines involved momentary bridging by individual beds or groups of beds and the ultimate development of a laminated beam near the surface.

An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SFA) was used to conduct direct force measurements between mica surfaces in dodecylamine hydrogen chloride collector solutions at varying pH levels. It was found that long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40 to 0.48 nm2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that, in the pH range of 8.0 to 10.3, the maximum flotation recovery of quartz may be attributed to the appearance of a long-range hydrophobic force, which, in turn, can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

In modeling of hindered-settling bed separators, the published separation mechanisms are based on differences of particle density and size distributions, without the details of complexity of particles-liquid interactions. A fluid dynamic model for the separator is developed using Euler-Lagrange approach of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Fluid motion is obtained from solving the movement of liquid governing equations. The damping effect on flow pat-terns caused by the movement of particles resulted in liquid-particle coupling is included in the model. Effects of particle size, and particle density compositions, feed rate, feed water flow rate, upward fluidizing water flow rate, etc., are simulated in the 2-D separation model. Flow pattern effects on the separation of fine particles in the separators with center downward-flow and side cross-flow feed systems are investigated.
