The mining industry needs to assure compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). Congress has enacted this legislation with the intent of preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution of the nation' s surface and groundwaters. Recognized sources of pollution such as seepage from tailings ponds, waste dumps, and contaminated effluent from mine dewatering operations pose a serious threat to adjacent groundwaters. In addition, technological innovations being implemented by the industry such as in situ leaching of low grade ore deposits may also lead to ground- water contamination. An adequate monitoring methodology designed to meet the needs of the mining industry is needed. Monitoring and control methodology devised for other man- caused sources of ground- water pollution - e. g., landfills - offer considerable promise for adaptation to the problem. The prediction of deleterious effects on groundwater quality usually requires extensive geohydrological data in addition to a thorough analysis of the mining activity that is underway or projected. If the avail- able data are adequate, mathematical models of surface and groundwater flow can be constructed that will help to predict effects on water quality. Data are inadequate to allow a realistic interpretation of pollution potentials. These data can be supplemented by computer simulation as a method to explore a number of possible environmental effects and also to develop a minimum-cost approach to identifying and gathering the additional necessary supporting data. Incorrect assessment of the important environmental considerations may, in many instances, prove to be the weakest link in analyzing the financial feasibility of a mining operation.

The need for an integrated approach to optimization of unit operations in both the pit and the mill has long been recognized, but the complexity and nature of the overall problem has up to now resisted solution. This paper reports on a modeling methodology which couples symbolic and numeric computing to unify operations in both the pit and mill. The ultimate goal of this work is to optimize all operations that are influenced by blasting. Blasting plays a key role in all facets of operations. Obviously, drilling and blasting costs are determined by blast design, but the down-stream costs that are closely related to blasting results are often treated as separate functions: loading, hauling, cleanup, and crushing and grinding are all heavily influenced. Diggablilty and bucket fill factor are a function of fragmentation, the condition of the floor and uniformity in the shape of the muck pile. Likewise, cycle times and loading delays partially determine haul cycles, while fragmentation distribution and size determines the efficiency of truck loading. Removal and breakage of oversize causes loading delays and increases cleanup costs. The influence of blasting doesn't stop at the crusher. Mill productivity, power consumption, and maintenance are a function of the feed. Even at the SAG mill a reduction of a critical particle size during blasting can increase throughput. Thus, a bottle-neck for production far removed from unit operations in the pit can be alleviated by a modification in blast design. The question is: how do we optimize blasting with respect not only to itself but to al\ related mining and milling operations? For that matter, how do we even model blasting so that we can control the results of a blast?

The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980's. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today's dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven't the courage.

This paper will discuss a U.S. Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater systems in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring of shallow groundwater systems in the Basin. (2) Monitoring of the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems. (3) Development of a regional groundwater simulation model with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

In the past, most people have associated gold scams with the sale of non-existent gold mines, an undivided interest in unmined ore or the sale of gold-plated lead bars. These scams are still available to those who want to speculate. Now, though, the mining industry is plagued with a new type of con artist. Many of the new scams involve large, well established mining companies being victimized. Nearly all legitimate mining companies are in search of good mining prospects. This makes them susceptible to modern day con artists. Many professionals from the mining and petrochemical industries are out of work. Some of them have gotten involved with scams or activities that border on the criminal. Mining companies are losing millions of dollars each year to scams. Some of these scams involve venture-capital fraud. Some involve fraudulent mining proposals. And some involve unqualified individuals who are providing services by the precious metals industry. The author estimates that mining scams may be costing precious metals companies as much in dollar losses annually as employee theft. Employee theft is at an all time high, but so are gold scams. Since January of 1990, the au¬thor has been involved in gold theft investigations in which more than $1 million in gold product has been stolen by employees. In the past, most of the gold mine scam operators have concentrated on the general public, which is generally ignorant of basic mining procedures and practices. A scam artist would tell someone from your neighborhood that they have a wonderful underground mine. It produces 62.2 kg/t (2000 oz per st) of gold ore. Your neighbor might think that sounds like a very good investment. Those involved in the mining industry know better.

In 1911, Miami Copper Co. began a block caving operation at its Miami, AZ property. A gravity mill was used to separate copper minerals from the Pinal Schist host rock. Until 1932, the mill tailings were deposited by the upstream method using perimeter launders and spigot valves in six canyons adjacent to the mill. In 1928, the larger and more distant Solitude tailing pile was developed. By 1932, it was receiving all tailings. In 1925, Miami Copper converted the gravity mill to flotation with sulfide copper recoveries. From 1934 to 1943, Miami, Copper ran a leach-precipitate float (LPF) circuit on mined ore and, in 1943, began sulfuric acid in-place leaching of a portion of the caved area formed by block caving. The pregnant solutions were collected underground and pumped to the LPF precipitating drums to harvest copper. In 1954, the company started mining low-grade ore. This led to the running an old LPF plant on select mill tailings from April 1957 to March 1959. In 1959, block-cave mining ceased. Solution mining became the only source of production using a launder precipitation plant. In the mid-1960s, Miami Copper merged with the Tennessee Corp. In the latter part of the decade, Cities Service Co. bought the combined properties. In 1976, Cities Service commissioned a 15-t/d (16.5-stpd) solvent extraction electrowinning(SX-EW) facility at its Miami copper property to replace the precipitation plant. In 1982, Occidental Petroleum Co. bought Cities Service. In 1983, the Miami operations were sold to Newmont Mining Corp. and set up as a subsidiary company, Pinto Valley Copper Corp. Finally, in 1987, Newmont Mining spun off a combined Pinto Valley and San Manuel unit as Magma Copper Co.

Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. A new extraction method which includes a combination of gravity and alternating electromagnetic fields with interfriction of mineral particles was proposed (Tikhonov O.N., 1979) and tested in lab conditions at Mineral Processing Department of St. Petersburg Mining Institute. At the beginning of the work the main goal was to find an efficient alternative to traditional extraction methods (like shaking table, etc.) used for concentration of fine alluvial gold particles. After the method and a series of gradually improved lab separators (Tikhonov, et al., 1983) were positively tested for gold (Tikhonov, et al.. 1986) the efficiency of the method was also proved for extraction of and other heavy minerals from alluvial and ground ores in experimental work at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute. The fine heavy minerals were separated to concentrates with high technological indices (Andreev et al., 1987), (Tikhonov, Gladkov, 1987), (Tikhonov, Gladkov 1989). In parallel a semi-industrial gravi-electro- magnetic separator was made and several technological flowsheets were designed for testing the method in industrial conditions (Tikhonov O.N., Miazin B.N., 1987), (Tikhonov O.N., Tolstunov S.A., Jebelev V.V.,1989). A series of industrial tests accompanied with complete sampling and standard technological measurements were performed at several alluvial deposits, with good technological indices. Thus the method and the flowsheets displayed high additional recovery of fine alluvial gold particles during elkrated industrial experiments in Siberia (Aldan province). At higher concentrate grade this method, even in one-stage operation, increased gold recovery more than by 25% compared with shaking table (for particles -0.10 mm gold recovery was 82% vs. 55% by shaking table, for particles - 0.25mm the recovery was 97.5% vs. 61.8%). Experiments were performed by joint team of St. Petersburg Mining Institute and the Irkutsk Institute of Rare Metals (Tikhonov O.N., Gladkov S.A., Tarasova T.B., 1991).

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

For at least five decades, a plume containing acidic metal-bearing water has been moving through the shallow alluvial aquifer along Pinal Creek in the Globe-Miami area. Two chemical facies of water are distinguished in the alluvial aquifer: (1) a metal-rich acidic plume with gram per liter concentrations of metals (primarily iron) and pH values between 3 and 5 and (2) neutralized water with a pH greater than 5, low concentrations of metals, and high concentrations of sulfate and manganese. Historically, the acid plume has moved through the aquifer at an average velocity of 0.6 m/day, ten times slower than the average pore velocity of groundwater in the aquifer calculated using the Darcy equation. The rate of migration of the metal-rich plume is retarded by pH-dependent chemical reactions between acid water and the aquifer matrix. As acid water is neutralized by reaction with calcite, rising pH conditions in- crease the oxidation rate of iron and decrease its solubility resulting in the precipitation of ferric hydroxides. The formation of ferric hydroxides is a proton releasing reaction which main- tains acidic conditions. The acidit of the plume and the neutralization capacity of tKe aquifer are best assessed in terms of the iron content of the water and not the hydrogen ion activity computed from pH measurements. The parameters controlling plume migration are: (1) the calcite content of the aquifer (2) the iron acidity of plume water, and (3) the rates of acid neutralization and ferrous iron oxidation. A numerical solute transport and reaction model based on the concept of iron acidity effectively simulates the historical development of acidic conditions, predicts the behavior of the plume, and was used as a management tool to identify the most efficient and cost effective remedial strategy.

After 15 years of production, 91 Mt (100 million st) of ore mined and nearly 227 kt (500 million lb) of molybdenum produced, Climax Molybdenum Co.'s Henderson Mine and Mill are being modernized as a new mining level is brought on line. The $40 million investment in mine development and plant modernization positions the Henderson complex as one of the largest, low-cost primary molybdenum producers for the next 15 years. Henderson history The Henderson Mine and Mill facilities are located on the east and west flanks of the Continental Divide about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver, CO. The underground mine and surface mill sites are linked by 16 km (10 mile) of railroad tunnel and 8 km (5 mile) of surface trackage. The mine, railroad and mill were built between 1968 and 1976 at a cost of $500 million. Each has operated at various levels of production over the past 15 years. The Henderson Mine was originally developed using a highly mechanized, panel caving mining system. Over the past 10 years, mining methods, equipment and railroad operations have been improved to position Henderson as one of the most productive and lowest cost underground mining operations. At the same time, the mill and concentrator facilities were upgraded to reduce costs and improve product quality. During this time, manpower was reduced from 2000 to 560 employees. These 560 people increased productivity to 54 t (60 st) per total manshift. They reduced operating costs by 50%. And they dramatically improved safety performance. However, as the 1990s approached, the modernization of the Henderson mining and milling complex and the development of the new 7700 mining level became the primary goals to guide Henderson into the 21st century.

I am going to discuss gold mining in Mexico during the last twenty centuries and try to suggest some of the futures that may develop in this industry in the next decade. Before I start this rapid review of such a long developing mining tradition, T must give credit to my sources. I an, talking here as an associate of Commoditi,c,s Reseflrch Unit Ltd. of London (better known as CRU) and as a principal of Ainsworth-Jenkins Holdings, an international mineral resource consultant group that has been exploring and deveJoping mining properties in Mexico and Central America for the last six years. CRU is the leading consultancy providing industry, governments and financial institu­tions with analysis and advice on the metals and the mining industries. They recently completed a three volume study entitled Gold Mining Opportunities in Mexico. This .<1tudy describes Mexico, the business environment, its geology and details its gold mining potential with property descriptions and maps. I have adopted and adapted the s11mmari.zed Mexican government statistics and rlrawn on some of the historical comments in these volumes. However, I do not have ti me (nor would it be appropriate) to be giving the details of the CRU work. Jorge Ordonez, whose shoes I am trying to fill today, was a major contributor to the study and it was an honour to be asked by Willem Beunderman, the Principal Editor, to step in when Jorge was unfortunately unable to be here. Jorge has been an enormous help to Ainsworth­Jenkins and a consistent friend of foreign investment in Mexico. Our own work in Mexico has allowed us to obtain a few useful in­sights into this most interesting slice 0f Mexican history.

Igarape Bahia Mine, which is currently the largest gold producer in Brazil, belongs to Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and is situated 250 miles south of Belem, state of Para, Brazil. It came into operation in 1992 with the startup of the CIP plant, fed with high grade ore, presently at 3.4gAu/t. The ore is totally oxidized, containing extremely fine particles of free gold. The ore is soft and low cyanide consumer, with a maximum work index of 12kwh/sht. In 1993 a Heap Leaching Plant was set into operation, handling low grade ore of · 1.s g Ault. The Heap Leaching Plant has undergone two major expansions. In 1994 its capacity was raised from lMtpy to 2,2Mtpy and in 1998, with a thorough remodeling of crushing operations, it was raised again to 3.5Mtpy. The CIP plant, which was originally designed with a capacity for l. lMtpy of ore, was expanded to a 2.2Mtpy capacity in 1994. Presently, the CIP plant accounts for most of Igarape Bahia's total gold output, with approximately 220,000oz per year. Igarape Bahia's annual output is around 360.000 oz. Over the last three years, work has been intensified to improve performance of both processes, aiming at maximizing productivity of the two industrial plants. Reduced costs and increased revenues have been given a special emphasis in the unified improvement program. Cost · reduction has involved developing methodologies to rationalize consumption of materials and inputs, while increased productivity has been given top priority as a means of generating increasing revenues. Thus, all of the improvement and development efforts have had a common goal: to increase operating income.

Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.&apos;s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). Microprocessor-based balances are helping Keffler & Rose Coal Preparation Co. to test and ship coal faster than the competition. They provide a high level of accuracy in meeting Environmental Protection Agency standards and customer specifications .and help minimize "bad" coal. The combination of speed and accuracy has helped increase K&R&apos;s sales, while improving the company&apos;s reputation for meeting precise client requirements. The quality of coal that is assured by the company&apos;s testing-at an in-house lab using fast, precision weighing, and a computerized sulfur test-has assured K&R of a good price for its products. Recent EPA standards have strained the testing capabilities of coal suppliers. Companies involved with high-sulfur coal often use outside laboratory services that can take three to four days to report test results. Since the coal business moves much faster these days, some coal companies cannot afford that kind of time. Too much coal not up to specifications could be produced within a three or four day period. Keffler & Rose took a novel approach to this problem, installing its own in-house laboratory. The test situation immediately improved with this step. However, one bottleneck persisted for a time: the weight measurement procedure for ash, moisture, and energy content. The company first employed a mechanical balance that required time for setting up and taring. The balance provided readings on a conventional scale that was not very precise and allowed for error through subjective readings by the operator. The balance bottleneck was broken when K&R applied new technology to meet its needs: microprocessor-based weighing. The result has been a 75% reduction in weighing time and a sharp increase in accuracy. This has contributed to the test speed needed to keep up with 227-t/h production and precise K&R coal specs.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Borehole scoping has been widely used in the U.S. underground coal mines as a method for geologic mapping and stability analysis because it is very useful for identifying rock types, voids, fractures, and formation boundaries through the direct observation of the borehole wall. An image stitching technique was proposed to generate panoramic borehole images from side-view borescopes in a previous study. However, the generation of panoramic borehole images can be affected by the borehole condition because the image stitching process highly depends on the key point detection and matching. The presence of dust and water could have a significant influence on the detection of key points. In this study, the influence of borehole conditions on panoramic borehole images was studied from the success of image stitching and the visibility of geologic features and lithology changes. Borehole videos recorded at different times, when the same borehole was freshly drilled, freshly washed with water and 12 days after washing, were processed with the proposed technique. The comparison of the stitched images shows that the presence of dust has minimal influence on the image stitching process but shows significant negative effects on the visualization of geologic feature and lithology change. In addition, the presence of water can significantly hinder the image stitching process, which in turn helps in identifying lithology change. Borehole scoping aids in identifying and mitigating hazardous conditions in underground mines, and this study provides preliminary inputs into identifying optimum borehole conditions for geologic mapping with panoramic borehole images.

A drill recorder is a permanent data collecting instrument. In open pit blast hole drilling the application of a drill recorder is that of data collection, drilling control, and drilling education. The various drilling parameters (weight, RPM, penetration, torque, and air) have a drilling correlation which can be demonstrated and documented by a recorder graph. When the correlation is physically put to use during the process of drilling, then the recorder has become a drilling tool and is no longer just a data collecting instrument, per se. By being able to maintain accurate records and drilling control, comprehensive studies of changes both operational and technological can be made. These are based on in-progress facts and not after-the-fact logs. To determine total drilling efficiency, drilling conditions must be documented and controlled. Field operations at American Smelting and Refining Company&apos;s Mission Mine have proved that by increasing drilling control, demonstration of parameter relationships, and drill monitoring, more economic efficiency can be obtained. In comparing results obtained with recorder control and conventional control a decrease of 14 percent to 36 percent of drill footage costs were obtained. The percentage of variance is dependent upon whether drilling is milled-tooth or carbide-insert bit drilling.
