Simulation of coal preparation circuits is becoming a widely practiced technique used for the design of coal preparation plants. On a much more limited basis, simulators are finding application in off-line process control. A typical application in the latter category involves inputting projected coal washability data for a shift into the simulator and using the software to optimize product quality and recovery within a range of predefined specifications. The plant is then operated at SG?s of separation determined from the simulation exercise for the one shift time period. This procedure is useful in that it incorporates some form of advanced planning into preparation plant operations. There is an attempt made to reflect changes in feed coal quality on a shift by shift basis rather than continually running the plant near design specifications with changes in SG?s of separation being made in response to an inadequate sampling program which only provides a spot measurement of material that has already passed through the plant. Instead of instituting changes on a shift by shift basis, NHI has proposed a method whereby monitoring three major operating parameters, * Feedrate to jig * Flowrate from hydrocyclone overflow * Density from cyclone overflow the ongoing plant operating performance can be accurately predicted on a continual basis, i.e., updated hourly. Using a distribution curve to predict the split between the clean coal and refuse from a given separator does not account for variations in efficiency that occur as a result of variations in operating parameters. NHI and Arch have studied the effect of both jig loading and solids content in the recirculating load to the jig on product quality. As a result, relatively simple measurements can be made on-line in a preparation plant which will provide input data to the simulation program that enables the prediction of jig/hydrocyclone circuit performance on a real time basis.

The unprecedented demand for capital investment in the mining industry today has intensified management's interest in every known technique which will help to reduce operating costs and increase production. One proven approach leading to the accomplishment of this objective is well known in the mining industry and is gaining added prestige, particularly where keen competitive conditions exist. This approach is in the area of incentives applied to mining productivity. An investigation of many incentive plans now in use throughout the mining industry revealed a predominant number of conventional type plans, Most of these plans are designed to reward the hourly-paid employee on the basis of percent over and above a standard hourly or daily ton rate, By contrast, this search failed to divulge any incentive plan solely and independently developed for production management employees. This does not mean that such plans in the mining industry are nonexistnet, but it does indicate that production management incentive systems are scarce or are being kept under wraps.

It is common practice when thermally drying coal from wet coal preparation facilities that the coarse +0.5mm fractions and fine fractions (-0.5mm) are combined and fed to a thermal dryer. There are very good reasons for this concept. The coal feed is much easier to handle in this condition for it is not as likely to stick inside the dryer or hang up in the material handling equipment, and is easier to feed and discharge. However, it is generally only the -0.5mm fines that really need to be dried. The +9.5m fraction of the cleaned coal will leave the dewatering screens, or drain and rinse screens, at an acceptable surface moisture, probably 5 or 5 ½ percent. The 9.5m x 0.5mm mesh fraction can be centrifuged to about 8 percent. The -0.5m fines can range from 18 to 22 percent or more, depending upon the type of equipment employed to dewater, and upon the size distribution within this size range.

Improvement of grade and recovery requires the use of optimum processing circuits. Critical to an optimum circuit is the set point for separation. With the introduction of the concept of circuit analysis (Meloy, 1982), it became possible to determine optimum circuits for a given task. No analysis, however, has yet been made as to the grade requirements of the larger circuits. Williams and Meloy (1982), reviewed the literature and concluded that, within the operating range, most unit operations involved in particle separation behave linearly. For the purposes of this analysis, linearity will be assumed. Grade, G, is defined as the weight of the coal mineral, C, that appears in the product, divided by the weight of the coal mineral plus the weight of the gangue mineral or waste mineral, Q, which appear in the product.

Hydraulic slurrying and pumpability characteristics of phosphate matrix (ore) have not been quantitatively defined. An elemental triangular diagram analysis of rock/sediment texture is used to classify the nature of the ore; then related to empirical field data of hydraulic pressureand production yardage ratios. This experiment is applied as a geotechnical tool to provide empirical data of ore slurry and pumpability characteristics as key considerations in the design of slurry pipeline systems. A real texture variability maps are developed on a section of land to assist mine engineering planning.

Linear meridional zones of bad roof conditions have been frequently encountered in producing collieries working the Permian age Lithgow seam in the western coalfield of New South Wales. The prediction of such zones ahead of mining is desirable for reasons of both safety and economics. In March, 1981, we carried out an experimental, three-component in-seam seismic survey at Invincible Colliery to discover whether such zones have any unambiguous seismic effect. The underground survey was the first of its kind to be attempted in an Australian mine. The data quality was excellent with the spectra broadband and clear. Polarisation analysis disclosed two modes: one compressional; the other shear horizontal. The SH model was clearly dispersive and well gound to the plane of the seam. Modal velocities decreased by up to 15% at the fracture-swarm site. There is a strong suggestion on the RLS maps obtained here that the distributed fault zone is acting as a composite scatterer of channel waves. The P-SV and SH wave tomograms obtained show, in a general way, the distribution of stress in the coal panel.

The current Automatic Data Acquisition system developed by some support manufacturers makes it possible to continuously monitor and record changes in leg pressure and advancing ram stroke in every shield, and shearer position at any moment during the mining operation. In order to effectively use the massive data obtained from this system for improving production and maintenance managements as well as providing better roof control at a longwall face, the research currently conducted jointly by West Virginia University and Cyprus-Amax Coal Co. attempts to develop a Longwall Management System for mine operators. The LMS software package runs on a MS Windows NT environment and consists of four sub-systems: (1) Data Interpretation and Analysis; (2) Production Management; (3) Maintenance Management; and (4) Ground Control. This paper presents the details of each sub-system.

Tunnel contracts often include provisions for pre-excavation probing and grouting for areas ahead of the tunnel heading. If grouting triggers are met, tunneling stops, and grouting is performed. There is substantial variation within the underground industry on what criteria are applied to the grout verification hole that is drilled post-grouting and before excavation resumes. The criteria for determination of the effectiveness should be dependent on the geology and local hydrogeologic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present specific criteria that can be used by a practitioner to determine whether tunneling can resume or if additional grouting is required.

The Woodsmith Project is located in north-eastern England within the North York Moors National Park. The strata contains the world’s largest known high-grade Polyhalite resource of around 2.66 billion tonnes. The Project was initiated by York Potash Limited (YPL), a subsidiary of Sirius Minerals plc., but in March 2020, a takeover was completed by Anglo American, one of the largest mining companies in the world. Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral and contains essential nutrients required for plant growth. The Polyhalite will be extracted via two deep mine shafts and transported underground from the mine site to a Materials Handling Facility on a Mineral Transport System (MTS), which comprises a high-capacity conveyor belt system located within a 4.9 m ID tunnel. In 2018, STRABAG were awarded with the design and construction of the MTS tunnel and associated infrastructure, including the high-capacity conveyor system. The scope of work consists of 300 m of open cut, 100 m SCL tunnel, 36.5 km TBM drive (originally anticipated as three separate TBM drives) along with a network of underground caverns at the Woodsmith Mine. The construction of two 380 m deep intermediate access shafts was later awarded as Amendments to the Contract. The tunnel is constructed using a Herrenknecht Single Shield TBM. As a result of how the various elements of the project have developed over time, the first TBM drive has been extended to ~29 km making it the worlds longest single heading TBM Tunnel when complete. The option of completing the entire tunnel length with a single heading TBM drive is currently being assessed by Anglo American and STRABAG. This unprecedented tunnel length requires two intermediate shafts to provide essential access and services, the first intermediate shaft is at Lockwood beck (LWB) and the second is at Ladycross (LDX). The LWB shaft has been constructed utilising the innovative Blind Boring technique never used before in the UK. This paper will explain the methodology and technical risk management associated with this technique. The authors believe that the collaborative approach between all contract partners is and continues to be the important contributor for the success of this project.

An 8-foot tall horseshoe adit tunnel located within an abutment of the Mount Morris Dam in Mount Morris, NY required repair of a failed reinforced concrete liner. The adit tunnel is entirely founded within highly weathered shale bedrock units, which induced unloading stress on the original tunnel liner. An epoxy-impregnated carbon fiber fabric wrap manufactured by Sika was chosen to repair the failed adit tunnel liner. Kilduff Underground Engineering completed the design of the tunnel repair utilizing both empirical and numerical methods. Merco Engineering Contractors completed the injection of chemical grout and repair liner installation.

INTRODUCTION Concentration of radon 222Rn and its decay products occuring in the Polish mines of metal-ores call for the necessity of systematic radiation control /Do8la/ both of the working environment and of the miners' personal exposure. The attempts at introducing a system of radiological protection in mines, similar to the ones existing in X-ray or isotope laboratories, took several years and consisted of development of the methods for control of concentration of radon and its progeny in the air, as well as the methods for measuring individual exposure. It was accepted that the assessment of both transient concentration in the air and of personal exposure are basic elements of the control system, which should be implemented independently of each other. Concentration measurement serves to detect and to determine those areas in mines where there is intensive radon emanation, and where current control of the effectiveness of technology introduced to deacrease the concentrations is necessary; personal dosimetry results in the assessment of the actual exposure of miners to radiation. PRINCIPLES OF THE SYSTEM The assessment of working environment is based on concentration measurements of the potential radiation energy of radon alpha decay products. Decentralized assessment is carried out by the special dosimetric service operating in each mine. Dosimetrists are equipped with portable radiometers, type RGR-11, made by the institute of Nuclear Research, Warsaw. The radiometer is presented in Fig. 1. Measurement of filter activity is performed automatically according to Markov's method /Ma62/ or any other method. Simultaneously to potential energy measurement the dosimetrists are measuring the dust concentration in the air and ventilation rate. Ventilation service looks for correlation between those indices and the concentration of radon daughters in the air. Derived Air Concentration /DAC/ for concentration assessment was accepted to be 6.25 10-6 Jm-3 /0.3 WL/ according to ICRP recommendation /Publication No. 24/ /ICRP77/. If environmental measurements reveal potential energy concentration exceeding the value of 0.3 DAC at working places, the miners employed there are subject to individual control of personal exposure. Individual exposure measurement is carried out centrally by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in [Lodz] for all metal-ore mines. Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

Rail access to Ontario International Airport (ONT) has long been a goal of San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to increase public transit options to ONT and provide incoming ONT passengers improved access to San Bernardino County and the greater Southern California region. This paper describes the planning for the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) delivery of an emerging technology tunnel connection between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and ONT. The paper discusses key technical considerations, challenges, and opportunities; conceptual configuration development; and construction planning and establishment of the footprint for the underground connection.

Pillars are used as the primary support structures for underground mining to maintain stability by supporting the over laying strata. In the case of horizontal seams, the pillars are typically subjected to axial loading due to the weight of the overburden and/or abutment stresses, while in the case of inclined seams they are subjected to oblique loading due to both the vertical and horizontal in-situ stress.

A National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded project (NASA Grant #NAG13-02026) is underway to determine the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map mineralogy that affects water quality within a watershed and to identify the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic sources to that drainage. Natural sources, particularly areas of pyritic hydrothermal alteration, have been found by the Colorado Geological Survey to be a significant source, sometimes the only source, for acidity and/or metals in a number of areas of Colorado (Neubert, 2000). This situation undoubtedly occurs in many places in the Western United States and elsewhere where metallic mineralization occurs. Anthropogenic sources arise from mining and other human activities that increase the exposure of acid-generating materials to weathering processes, thereby increasing acidity and metal loading to drainages where that activity is occurring or has occurred. This project is attempting to determine if these sources can be differentiated through mineralogical analysis, in conjunction with surface water chemistry that controls the precipitated minerals, of the impacted drainages by remote sensing techniques.

MICHAEL J. CRUICKSHANK SENIOR AUTHOR Marine mining is a very broad field. It encompasses every facet of terrestrial mining but with the unique addition of a superimposed liquid overburden, which is itself mineralized. It is the unique aspects of marine mining that are discussed in this section. In keeping with the times, a systems approach is taken in the presentation of the material. The environment is first described, and this is followed in logical sequence by the common requirements for working there, then the mineral exploration phase, the exploitation and, finally, the operational restraints imposed by man and nature. Free use is made of tables and figures from original and published works and extensive listings of reference material round out each section. The title "Marine Mining" was chosen in preference to ocean or underwater mining because it is broad enough to include oceans, beaches and inland seas. The selection of terms sometimes may seem odd but they have not been chosen arbitrarily. All things are reduced, where possible, to basics and defined. Applying systems terminology, the word "platforms" is used in the functional sense and includes not only airborne, waterborne and fixed platforms, but man himself in his capacity as a working diver. If there is confusion it is often because of familiarity with a word in a context personal to the reader. For example, what does extraction mean to you-or mining or exploitation? Cost data have been interspersed throughout the section whenever they could be obtained. The use of these data should be tempered with understanding because no two situations are alike and improvements in marine technology are constantly being made. The names of individual authors are listed with each subsection. Where no name is given, the responsibility has been that of the senior author. Acknowledgment is sincerely made to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and latterly the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for encouraging and supporting the preparation of the work ; to the secretarial staff at the Marine Minerals Technology Center and to Donald Eisman for editing. To the many other contributors who may not be listed by name, grateful acknowledgment is also due. It is hoped that the chapter will be useful to the practicing mining engineer who suddenly is assigned to marine work or to the experienced marine engineer who is equally suddenly assigned to mining work. It is not possible to put "everything-you -need-to¬-know" into one section, but. the very full bibliographies at the end of the text should adequately fill in for those who wish to know more. 20.1-THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT Marine mining is set apart as a separate discipline by the marine environment. The following subsections describe the environment from the point of view of the physicist, the chemist and the geologist. The interrelationship of these disciplines with the economic mineral potential of the oceans and seas is apparent from the description of the marine mineral resources. The marine environment is an extremely complex natural phenomenon with which the marine mining engineer must learn to live. It can be the source of his wealth or his frustrations and sometimes both. It can never be ignored.

The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. The San Manuel Oxide Pit is located within the subsidence boundaries of Magma Copper Company's block caving operation. Ground conditions offer a constant blasting challenge and vary from hard, competent crystalline rock to widely spaced fracturing in a sedimentary conglomerate. A successful drilling and blasting program has undergone several changes since mining commenced in 1985 and continues to be developed. This paper discusses the site specific progress made with the drilling and blasting program from selection of feasibility parameters to current practice. Topics discussed include controlled blasting, use Of high energy blasting agents, charge decking, blast casting, as well as standard drill and blast techniques.

In this presentation, it is intended to briefly describe some occurrences of lead-zinc mineralization in Mississippian carbonates of central Nova Scotia. Results of geophysical and geochemical prospecting are presented. Because the deposits do not give positive identification to these indirect techniques, it is necessary to site exploratory drilling through the development of geological concepts.
