Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors: (1) sample collection and preparation, (2) counting techniques, and (3) operational definitions of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples and are summarized in Table 1. The analytical procedure and detail required in the analysis vary with the definition of asbestos. Accordingly, this may be the only type of environmental analysis where the definition of a substance dictates the choice of analytical methods, and the rigor demanded of the analysis. Lead, arsenic, or beryllium are sub- stances having a constant definition and the method of analysis chosen depends on the concentration and precision required. However, the meaning of the term asbestos fiber is dependent on the eye of the beholder. Macroscopically, asbestos has certain physical properties that make it highly useful. Rockforming minerals do not display similar characteristics. Now, the question arises as to how three definitions of asbestos came into being. This is a result of two factors: (1) the definition of asbestos on any scale intrinsically involves the morphology or shape of the material, and (2) the advent of the transmission electron microscope permits detection of asbestos fibers and other mineral fragments in a size range where the physical properties of asbestos such as tensile strength, flexibility, or thermal resistance are difficult, if not impossible, to measure. There is a good deal of controversy about which definition is most appropriate for regulatory purposes because of a lack of appropriate health effects data (Cooper, 1978). Most differences of opinion center on the questions surrounding the following: 11 Morphology-Is a 3:l aspect ratio an appropriate medical or physical lower limit for the definition of an asbestos fiber? 2) Length-Are asbestos fibers shorter than some arbitrary length (5 pm) as hazardous as longer fibers? 3) Mineralogy-Is the mineralogical distinction between asbestos and nonasbestos minerals medically significant? While these questions are directly resolvable only with the biological and health effects data, ultimately such data reflects the ability of analytical procedures to fully characterize the materials used in health effects studies on animal models, and to monitor the exposure to particulates with different physical attributes in the workplace or community (Cooper, 1978). The following sections outline the analytical problems involved in distinguishing the asbestos and nonasbestos varieties of the same mineral; the analytical procedures available for identifying asbestos and measuring its concentration in environmental samples; the ability of these methods to distinguish asbestos fibers from nonasbestos particles; and their precision and reproducibility. Finally, we suggest some future directions in terms of definition and procedure that would greatly improve the quality of such analyses. ASBESTOS VS. "Gold-mine effluents are often characterized by high concentrations of copper, ammonia and cyanide derivatives (mostly cyanates and thiocyanates). While not acutely toxic to birds, this water can be acutely toxic to fishes and invertebrates. In many jurisdictions, the effluent requires further treatment in order to pass a mandatory requirement to be nonlethal to species like the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or Daphnia magna. Using actual mine water, it has been demonstrated that aerated moving bed biofilm reactors will biodegrade the ammonia, cyanides, cyanates and thiocyanates, thereby removing the toxicity associated with these components. By removing copper by precipitation the water can be made to pass acute toxicity tests. Tests have demonstrated that the process is stable between 4 and 25°C, with no significant changes in the treated water composition. Once the biomass is acclimatized, the process is resistant to upsets and requires very little inputs except for phosphorus and air. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that an anoxic reactor can be added downstream of the aerated reactors to remove nitrates if required.IntroductionThis paper will demonstrate that gold-mine effluents, which are toxic to fishes and invertebrates, can be made nontoxic by using a combination of chemical precipitation and biological oxidation.The typical composition of gold-mine effluents will first be described. The applicable legislation will then be introduced, with its requirement that the treated effluent be nontoxic. The toxicity of a typical untreated effluent will then be confirmed, and the sources of the toxicity identified. After that, a number of toxicity reduction treatment methods will be presented, and the selected method will be described.The lab tests that confirmed the efficiency of the treatment method will be presented, with three phases of testing as the understanding of the process gradually improved. Toxicity test results showing that the water is nontoxic after treatment through the temperature range will be presented."

Two pressure balancing chambers were constructed at a Colorado coal mine to reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion. Each chamber was established by installing a Kennedy stopping at about 10 ft (3 m) in front of an isolation seal, and equipped with two safety doors, a nitrogen injection system, and a set of environmental monitors. Several pressure balancing tests for different ventilation conditions were conducted in these chambers. During each test, pressurized nitrogen was injected into the chamber and the pressure differentials across the stoppings and seals monitored. This study presents a summary of the results achieved, lessons learned, and the basic requirements to operate a pressure chamber effectively.

Conventional triboelectrification based dry coal beneficiation methods require ground coal as a prerequisite feed material, energy intensive static-in-line mixer or cyclonic tribocharger configuration, and transport and/or improvement in the design of free-fall separators to improve the separation efficiency of [me pyrite/mineral matter from coal. The proposed paper illustrates the two concepts. First, the use of ceramic media in a polyurethane lined attitor in achieving simultaneous grinding and differential charging. Second, the use of an electrocentrifuge to selectively separate coal from mineral matter present in the triboelectrified mixture. It is of interest to note that some ceramic media can satisfy the requirements of both desired density and work function to achieve grinding and differential charging.

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

The Pueblo Viejo gold/silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/tonne gold and 20 g/tonne silver at a rate of 7,250 tonnes/day. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide orebody. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians (for some time in the early sixteenth century) prior to the arrival of the Spanish and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950?s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and accordingly, the plant was designed, built and brought into production.

While respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust that arises in industrial production mostly emanates from point sources and can be well mitigated, the extraction of dust is much more difficult in underground construction, since locally generated dust spreads widely. Analysis of dust measurements shows that RCS values are difficult to predict, and effective dedusting systems are required to comply with permissible exposure limits (PEL) in breathed air. Dedusting systems are effective near the tunnel face, while dedusting of working areas away from the tunnel face is difficult or even impossible. In general, there is little temporal influence on the tunnelling work—except for drill and blast excavation—which makes it necessary to remove the deduster and ductwork from the face area. Concurrent work in the tunnel is affected by the backflowing air mass of ventilation and therefore the quality of this air mass must be considered. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE), e.g., dust filter masks, is considered the least-desirable safety measure available. However, for certain individual operations in the tunnelling process, the use of PPE cannot be avoided, especially if other technical mitigation measures are not possible. In tunnels with small cross sections for example, dedusting systems often cannot be accommodated and PPE must be used instead. This raises the question of whether the use of PPE can be avoided by designing appropriate excavation cross sections and allowing for the implementation of technically engineered mitigation measures. The paper highlights problems with dedusting measures and shows possible ways to achieve OSHA compliance.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a post-mining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64°, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457-m wide and 3657-m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones in longwall gobs.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel (PTST) project is a part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge- Tunnel (CBBT) complex. The project involves the construction of a two-lane bored tunnel under the Thimble Shoal Channel between Portal Island #1 (the southernmost island) and Portal Island #2. The new PTST will be the rst transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region by a tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper describes the design and construction of the tunnel approach structure in an open marine environment with the strategies employed to overcome the various construction challenges. The project is unique since the entire tunnel approach structure is built on a very limited area within an open marine environment without any reclamation of the existing island.

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

The Moon Creek Reclamation Project provides a case study in the development of creative cleanup solutions for an abandoned lead and zinc mine and mill site located in northern Idaho. Innovative design features include construction of a 88,000 cubic yard combined waste containment facility on soft in-situ tailings, water-balance cap, limestone gravel drains, a geocell mattress for stability, and a below-grade scour protection berm. The stream, including a wetlands buffer, will be relocated within an existing road alignment and rehabilitated to provide trout habitat. These elements allow for the integration of reclamation and stabilization measures into an effective site design.

Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

The physical and mechanical properties of coal play a important role in the planing and design of coal mines. However, due to the complexity conditions in situ and the influence of unknown factors, it is hard for people to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal directly. In this research, uniaxial compressive stress was used to change the attribute of coal samples, and the ultrasonic measure technique was used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal. The results of laboratory test showed that there was a strong relation between uniaxial stress and velocity of ultrasonic wave. Sensitivity analysis with numerical simulation was used to define the relation between the physical-mechanical parameters of coal and ultrasonoc wave. With the dynamic analysis module of FLAC, three elastic and plastic models were built to model the coal samples. The modeling parameters were changed pro rata, and the correlation of coal and ultrasonic wave properties were summarized and presented. The result from this research will be base for further analysis of caving behavior of coal.

In this paper I will attempt to present an up to date review of the type of exploration' that has previously been carried out in Alaska, discuss some of the more significant past producers and recent discoveries, and suggest some approaches to future exploration. Hopefully this information may be of some use to those parties tempting to evaluate Alaska's non ferrous, non placer, metal potential or contemplating initiation of exploration in the state. II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Past production of non ferrous metals from lode deposits in Alaska has been meager considering the size of the state. Since there have been no major lode mines operative in Alaska since World War II, and since logistical conditions vary throughout the state, it is not possible to generalize with respect to mining costs in Alaska as compared to those in other areas. There seems to be little question, however, that a major deposit situated in a reasonably favorable location' could be profitably operating at present. Host of the known metal prospects in Alaska were discovered by early gold prospectors prior to World War I. From World War I through World War II exploration consisted chiefly of surface prospecting by prospectors on a diminished scale, as compared to the early gold rush days, drilling of some prospects by the U.S.B.M,, and occasional mine or prospect evaluations by mining companies. From the end of World War II to the present time, there has been a generally steady increase in exploration by mining companies consisting chiefly of prospect and district evaluations, large scale aerial reconnaissance programs in search of color anomalies, and regional drainage geochemical surveys. The post World War II increase in mining company exploration has not been matched by an increase in conventional surface prospecting.

In the short period of one mans? career we have seen specifications for bulk material handling systems and equipment grow from two or three pages to as much as two or three volumes for a single contract. The old 'short form' described what the purchaser expected the equipment to do. The long form does the same but also includes nut, bolt, and lockwasher depth of detail. What are the events that led to this proliferation of verbiage, and does it benefit the buyer in the final analysis? Is there a better way to purchase complex equipment while ensuring the highest quality for the dollar spent?

Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development recently presented. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex, as many factors such as mine design, production scheduling as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.
