Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.

Traditionally, the choice amongst different upgrading techniques or in finding the optimum operating conditions for a given upgrading technology depends on whether one is looking at the grade or the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. In fact, the conclusions are not usually the same. This is because the best technique or optimum operating conditions for the highest grade are not the same as the conditions to achieve the maxi-mum recovery. Therefore, a unique measure that takes into consideration both grade and recovery is urgently needed. Finding such a measure is the objective of this paper. A proposed measure provides a selectivity index in the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is no selectivity and 1 is ideal selectivity. The index can be obtained by plotting the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recoveries of the components in products of separation and a running regression applying a one-parameter equation. The measure was applied to assess the selectivity of selective flocculation under different operating conditions when used as a sensitive upgrading technique for ultrafine ground ores. After applying the proposed selectivity measure in the case of the selective flocculation of ultrafine Egyptian iron ore without the addition of cations, it was found that the optimum conditions are pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.4 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.55. With the addition of cations, the optimum conditions were found to be pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 2 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.65. It should be noted that determining these optimum conditions using the traditional grade or recovery measures was highly ambiguous.

The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) is currently constructing the largest water treatment plant in Canada. As part of this treatment scheme twin water transfer tunnels are being constructed. Work commenced with the 11 m diameter, 185 m deep Seymour Shaft which was excavated by drill and blast using a mobile crane for hoisting. The Seymour Shaft is the first large diameter shaft that has been sunk in Western Canada in recent years. The operational aspects associated with the hoisting, the drill-blast-support cycle and water control in the shaft are the focus of this paper.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. The model employs appropriate techniques of subjective (or "degree of belief") probability and computer simulation of tunnel construction operations to estimate distributions of total tunnel

Improved metals and other commodity prices have caused the mining industry to open new mines, re-evaluate development opportunities at potential mines and increase production at existing ones. This sense of renewed optimism is being seen at operations and development projects around the world. Except in the United States. The regulatory structure there has not allowed the domestic industry to share much in mining’s resurgence. It can still take up to 10 years to permit a new mine. And, while Clinton-era regulations regarding mill sites have been put on hold, existing mines that wish to expand operations still face significant regulatory and environmental hurdles. But things may begin to improve in the United States.

Gravel lithology affects the quality of aggregate because different rock types in gravel have different physical and chemical properties. The lithologic composition of alluvial gravel reflects the composition of its source terrane and the variable effects of weathering and transport on each rock type. This report discusses lithologic controls on aggregate quality in the mountain-front environment of the Colorado Front Range. Lithologic controls on aggregate quality of gravels were evaluated using pebble count data. Gravel lithology along the Front Range shows both temporal and regional variation. The principal variable in gravel lithology is quartz plus quartzite, of which quartzite is commonly more abundant. Large quantities of metaquartzite derived from the mountain front southwest of Boulder, Colo., were dispersed northeastward during deposition of the oldest Front Range gravels. Average quartz plus quartzite is greatest in the oldest gravels. Aggregate quality is probably enhanced by large quantities of quartzite. Abundant volcanic rocks in gravel may enhance aggregate quantity, but such occurrences are local in extent. Abundant sedimentary rocks in gravel, mainly sandstone near the mountain front, may decrease aggregate quality.

King County (Seattle, WA) is on a monumental task of building the new Brightwater System complete with a new treatment plant, three main conveyance tunnels, a new outfall into Puget Sound and other ancillary works. This paper will describe the first conveyance tunnel, Brightwater East currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor that is scheduled for completion in early 2010. The project located in Bothell, WA (north of Seattle) is in both King and Snohomish Counties. It was the first of the major tunnel projects that was scheduled by King County for the Brightwater System. The East Contract consists of the following major elements: 14,000 ft of 19'-2' EPBTBM mined tunnel using 16'-8' ID bolted, gasketed precast concrete segments for a primary liner; installing and encasing 14,200 ft each of 48', 66', 27', 84' in diameter steel pipes inside the tunnel along with three runs of fiberoptic cable; 2,430 ft of 72' in diameter microtunnel including three caisson shafts and associated structures; one Intercepting Structure (IS) shell to mine from that is 74 ft deep and 74 ft finished in diameter with 130 ft deep slurry diaphragm walls, tremie slab and final concrete wall lining; one Influent Pump Station shell (IPS) 83 ft deep, twin 77 ft inside diameter cells, with 160 ft deep slurry diaphragm walls, tremie slab, and final lining; two short 12 ft in diameter inter-shaft connector tunnels; one extraction shaft 40 ft deep by 40 ft wide and 140 ft long for connection to the new treatment plant piping.

A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

Tunneling requirements are presenting designers with greater challenges. The design and construction of the 2000-ft long unidirectional twin highway tunnels for the approach to one of two bridges of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges (LSIORB) Project is no exception. Excavation under low cover, beneath an historic site, with each tunnel of 70-feet wide and 50-feet high dimensions will set precedents for US highway tunnel excavation size. To investigate ground conditions to supplement final design of the highway tunnels, an exploratory tunnel excavated through karstic limestone and shale will be located within the confines of the proposed final alignment. With the LSIORB Project, Jefferson County, Kentucky and Clark County, Indiana will have improved cross-river mobility between them. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) are developing the LSIORB Project jointly, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Section 4, one of six sections, as shown in Figure 1 is the East End Kentucky Approach and Connections to I-265. Key elements of Section 4 are the twin three-lane highway tunnels under the historic Drumanard Estate. The property is located on the north side of US Highway 42 (US 42) at the intersection with the Gene Snyder Freeway (also KY841) as shown in Figure 2. One aspect of the project consists of the excavation of an Exploratory Tunnel along the southbound alignment tunnel. At the time of preparation of this paper, KYTC has not awarded the Exploratory Tunnel Contract. This paper will focus on the planned geotechnical investigation program that will occur during excavation of the exploratory tunnel and how the design of the twin highway tunnels will incorporate the findings to achieve an innovative and efficient configuration.

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research at a Pittsburgh Coalbed longwall mine to evaluate and optimize bleeder ventilation and gob gas venthole longwall methane control systems. Gas flow into these two methane control systems was investigated using a combination of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)tracer gas studies and gob venthole pressure monitoring experiments. The insights gained from this research has facilitated the development of a longwall subsided strata methane control system conceptual model. This model provides the basis for design suggestions to increase the efficiency of the gob gas venthole system to permit the bleeder ventilation system to become a "safety net" for methane control.

In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) study in the Russian Exploration Area at the northern equatorial Mid Atlantic Ridge began after signing the contract with International Seabed Authority in 2012. In order to evaluate the SMS resources in the course of exploration the major and rare metals with economic value should be determined. The evaluation is based on geochemistry and mineralogy and particularly on the type of rare metals occurrence in the SMS. As a case study research of the Semyenov cluster of SMS deposits have been conducted.

Project Description The Ok Tedi Mine is located approximately 18 km east of the Papua and New Guinea-Indonesia border, on the southernmost extremity of the Star Mountains Range, it is situated almost equidistant from the north and south coastlines. The headwaters of the Fly River system are in the Star Mountains. The open pit mining activities are on Mt Fubilan with a (pre-mining) elevation of 2,095 metres (6,871 Feet) in the Western Province. The mine is in an area characterised by very steep topography and dense tropical rainforest. The pit has been free draining but will cease to be so in the first quarter of 2009. Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) required a drainage tunnel to be driven under the mine, if possible before free drainage was no longer possible. The tunnel was required to be at least 5 m in diameter and 4,200 m (13,776 ft) long, with a possible extension of 1,100 m (3,608 Feet) if the mine decided it was required for additional drainage and underground exploration. The tunnel is being driven up grade at 0.67%, and will be connected to the pit by the raising boring of two 1.1 m (3 Ft. 6 In.) diameter shafts from the tunnel level 250 m (820 Feet) below to the pit. In Tabubil, the adjacent township at an elevation of 640 m (2,100 feet), air temperatures range from a mean at night of 20 (68°F) degrees centigrade to a daytime aver-age of 27 (81°F) degrees. Extremes of 12 and 39 (54°F?102°F) degrees centigrade have been recorded. Rain falls, on average, 339 days each year and totals 8,000 mm (315 inches), and have been known to approach 12,000 mm (472 inches) making the area one of the wettest places on earth. The portal site is at an elevation of 1,200 m or 4,000 ft and the air temperatures are a little cooler and the rainfall a little greater. Access to the mine is by air for personnel and light freight and by ship for heavier goods and materials. The port is at Kiunga on the Fly River 153 km from the portal site. The program for the project was tight, the decision to purchase the required TBM was made in July 2007 and the final decision to go ahead with the construction of the tunnel was made in November 2007.

Barite In 1987, United States mine production of barite increased 15.870, consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 6.97, and imports are estimated to have fallen by 19.57. World mine production decreased by 137, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of US produced barite, fob mine, decreased 1.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value for cif US port of all imported unground barite during the first 10 months of 1987 decreased from $39.02/t ($35.40 per st) to $37.16/t ($33.71 per st), the Bureau stated. Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of' barite with 637r of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, California, Tennessee, and Montana. The Bureau of Mines estimates 657 of the US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35°/r was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector continued to increase. Of the total consumption (used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers), it is estimated that 8070 was used in drilling fluids and 2017( in the non-oilfield sector - barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased slightly. But the average number of rotary rigs operating decreased from 964 in 1986 to 936 in 1987. This is the lowest number of operating rigs reported since 1949. The increase in consumption in this sector is due to an increase of rigs operating in the US Gulf and other higher consumption areas over 1986. Crude barite imports were estimated to be down by 19.5% in 1987. Still, they accounted for 637 of the barite consumed in the US. During the first 10 months, China continued to be the leading exporter to the US with 86.970, followed by Mexico with 10.997, and Morocco 2.107(. About 5Y of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Ground barite imports dropped from 19.8 kt to 8.8 kt (21,800 st to 9800 st) in 1987. Of this amount, 1.4 kt (1598 st) was used in drilling muds and the remainder of the non-oilfield use. During 1987, a few more grinding plants that supplied the drilling fluid market were closed. Along the US Gulf Coast, there are 13 operating plants versus a high of 31 in 1981. Cameron Offshore reopened its grinding plant at Cameron, LA. New Riverside Ochre Co. of Cartersville, GA, purchased a jigging-washing plant in Missouri and plans to place it in operation this year on a new deposit near Cartersville, GA. Milpark purchased Hughes Drilling Fluid in 1987 and operates under Milpark. US mine production will probably stay about the same as 1987. Price increases in the 10 % range for imported ore are expected due to water freight and the weak dollar. Baker Hughes estimates the average number of operating rotary rigs at 1070. A slight increase is expected in the non-drilling fluid market (chemicals, glass, and filler). Bauxite and alumina L. Baumgardner, US Bureau of Mines Domestic bauxite production in 1987, expressed as dried equivalent, was 581 kt (640,400 st), a 14% increase over 1986. US mine production amounted to less than 170 of total world production. Virtually none of the domestic bauxite was consumed in the production of primary alumina metal. About 30% of the bauxite produced by US mines was calcined to produce 117 kt (128,970 st) for use in abrasives, catalysts, chemicals, proppants, and refractories. Most of the uncalcined bauxite was refined to specialty aluminum oxide (alumina) forms. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 10 countries in 1987. Principal suppliers of the 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) were Guinea (4270), Jamaica (3501,), Australia (127), and Brazil (57). BACKGROUND The history of the Pine Point Mine is a rich one. This property once boasted one of the largest and most profitable lead-zinc mines in Canada's long and storied mining history. The Pine Point mine used open pit technology to extract the ore, but they faced several challenges. In addition to logistics problems with haul distances and metal prices, the mine faced the challenge of a large in flow of water from the Great Slave Lake. Eventually, the Pine Point Mine was closed leaving behind a large deposit of lead-zinc ore. Following the closing of the Pint Point Mine, Tamerlane Ventures Inc. acquired this property which includes approximately 70 million tonnes of lead-zinc reserves. The initial phase of this project will concentrate on the R-190 deposit as a test site to prove their new approach for extracting the ore. The R-190 reserve is believed to have approximately 1,014,000 million tonnes of high grade ore varying from 5% to 52% combined lead-zinc. Once the pilot project proves the approach is valid, the process will be repeated in approximately 33 other ore bodies on the property. This paper is written to discuss the design process to determine the most effective means of placing production and service equipment in the same shaft. Currently the design work and the mining scheme is complete, but lead-zinc pricing has prevented Tamerlane Ventures Inc. from moving forward with the project.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, treats wastewater generated by over three million people. A new tunnel and ocean outfall is being considered to meet future hydraulic demands and provide long-term redundancy for the Districts? existing tunnels, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. The detailed process used to evaluate the feasibility of various tunnel and out-fall locations is described. Challenges include a geologic profile with mixed face and squeezing ground conditions; high water pressures; active fault crossings; gassy and contaminated ground conditions; and liquefaction, slope stability, and lateral spreading concerns in the area of the riser and diffusers.
