The goal of slope mechanics is to achieve efficient and safe pit slopes. In the case of ultimate mine slopes the objective is to minimize the stripping ratio by steepening the slopes to their maximum stable limit. On the other hand, the inclination of working slopes is normally established by operating space requirements and the function of slope mechanics should be the continuous surveillance of slope conditions to assure long-term stability and to provide timely warning of impending slides so that corrective measures may be incorporated in production planning. In 1956 Kennecott instituted a program to provide the resources necessary to develop and maintain a slope mechanics capability, including technical knowledge, engineers, and instruments. Although the goal has not been fully achieved, very significant progress has been made. Other papers (3, 4, 7, 8, & 12) have described the purposes and detailed results of the most recent study carried out at the Kimbley Pit. The study has provided valuable experience and has given the industry a three dimensional picture of the stability variables that influence a mine slope. The study has better defined those areas which require further investigation and has indicated those design and analytical techniques which can be used with confidence. In effect, the study has paved the way for the next step; that of refining the design process and applying it for profit.

It is well established that coal can react with oxygen in air at ambient temperature and as a result heat is produced. If the heat is not fully dissipated the temperature of the coal mass will increase, thereby enhancing the rate of oxidation with a greater production of heat. If this phenomena continues, the coal mass can ignite under favourable heat accumulation conditions. A number of mine fires are caused each year due to this phenomena, commonly known as spontaneous combustion. The early detection of spontaneous combustion is of prime importance to mining engineers since any fire which could be detected at an early stage may save the mine from considerable damage and subsequent loss of production. Obviously, there is no single general criteria by which one can assess whether the under- ground mining of a coal seam will result in liability to spontaneous combustion. This has made it imperative to develop systems for the early detection of heating and to follow its development. In recent years considerable advances have been made in the design and development of methods for the early detection of spontaneous combustion. The Mining Research Laboratories (CANMET) is presently investigating the problem of spontaneous combustion in coal mines with Kaiser Resources Ltd. at their hydraulic mine at Sparwood, B.C. on a co-operative basis, and some of the work was described earlier in the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy Bulletin (1,Z). This paper summarizes and updates the work done by CANMET on the detection of spontaneous combustion in coal mines.

The use of paste technology for underground cemented backfill is widely accepted in the mining industry today as a potentially cost effective alternative to cemented rock and hydraulic slurry fill. While paste backfill is not the appropriate backfilling method for all mines, there are presently 23 operating tailings paste backfill plants throughout the world. This new technology has gained increasing acceptance as a backfill method over the last decade and its use is now expanding into the surface disposal of tailings using the stacked, thickened tailings disposal concept. Over the next 18 months there will be ten new paste plants commissioned in the world. Five of these ten plants will be used exclusively for surface tailings disposal or a combination of surface disposal and underground backfill production. The thickened tailings disposal concept, developed by Dr. Eli Robinsky in the early 1970's, has been in use for decades at several mine sites throughout the world (Kidd Creek Mine site in Northern Ontario), but always utilizing non segregating high density tailings slurry central discharge, stacked tailings placement. With the use of a higher solids content paste, the typical 2-degree beach angle can be increased to ten degrees or more with no runoff water and minimal shrinkage crack development through desiccation. This paper presents the design of the first mine to implement true surface paste disposal, Barrick Gold Corp's Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania. The paste system will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2001 allowing performance data to be collected to define the full potential of paste technology for surface tailings disposal.

The mechanical mining of coal seams where roof, partings, and floor rock are extracted along with the coal often introduces large numbers of quartz particles into the mine atmosphere. This study concentrates on the quartz properties in situ and in the airborne dust to determine how they are released from the source rock and whether they are fractured by the mining machinery. Three mines using drum-type continuous miners from different geographic areas were sampled to provide a data base. The roof and floor rocks were primarily siltstones containing 5% to 25% quartz measured by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) method. Much of the work presented here is based on the morphologies of the mineral grains determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study concentrated on particles of 0.2 to 10.0 µm and on particles containing > 75% Si. Mechanically-crushed quartz particles were also examined for comparison purposes. Particle shapes from the airborne samples suggested that fractured quartz particles were rare. Particle statistics also show that the average size of quartz particles in the airborne samples were similar to the average size of all particles. The conclusion is that very few quartz particles from the source rocks are fractured during mining due to their small initial size and the protection of the associated clays.

Many industries when volumes of the solid materials are large invariably relay upon the gravity to induce solids to flow out of storage, through channels and reactors. In mining industry ore pass’s requirements to less energy (only gravity) have made them very popular both in underground and open pit mines. This paper discusses the major findings of research on 2D Discrete Element Method simulation of gravity flow of ore in ore passes. Results show that ore characteristics, ore pass configuration can significantly affect loads (static, dynamic) on the gate assembly and creation of hang-ups.

Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. INTRODUCTION The design criteria for a particular concentration and dewatering project will provide the formal basis for design of the process, equipment and facilities. These criteria will specify the required capacities and operating schedules for the equipment, as well as the quantity and quality of the feed to be processed and products obtained. The general climatic and geographical conditions at the site, specific information on soil or rock conditions; and applicable design standards and codes will also be included. The design criteria will generally be based on an interpretation of testwork carried out on the particular ore and site, and will thus parallel in detail and completeness this testwork. As the project moves from the early conceptual phases through to final detailed design, the design criteria will be developed and become more detailed as information is generated and made available for use. The design criteria are critical to the design effort as the formal specification to the designer of what and how much is to be processed, what and how much is to be produced, and where and under what conditions. The actual design criteria will be a formal tabulation of the design basis information developed for the project in question. For a preliminary study, this may consist of a single page of data; for a feasibility study several pages and for a detailed design up to several hundred pages and multiple volumes. Depending on the complexity of the process and the level of detail included, each project will be unique to some degree. The design process for a project normally progresses from preliminary conceptual phases through to a final detailed design. The criteria used for the initial concepts are generally developed from rough data and preliminary testwork on the ore in question. Regardless, the plant throughput and products are defined, thus giving a scope and definition to the study phase. In some studies a range of throughputs may be analyzed in order to arrive at the most economically attractive size for the proposed operation. This optimum size is then used as the design throughput for the more detailed design phases. Similarly as more testwork results are available and the ore characteristics and process become more well defined a continuous updating of the design criteria is undertaken.

Coal has been mined in the Kailuan mining area for more than 130 years. The remaining reserves consist of, in large part, coals that would have been considered economically unminable or technically not feasible by the previous generations. Some of the current operations have to resort to overmining because the lower seams had been extracted in the past. This paper deals with the feasibility and proper layout of mining roadways of overmining carried out in the No. 5 seam of Qianjiaying coal mine of Kailuan mining area using numerical and physical simulation. FLAC2D was used to investigate the characteristics of stress and displacement in the overburden after extraction of the lower seams. It also analyzed the proper layouts of gateroads in the upper seams, i.e. locating them in the stress-relief zone of the gob so that their stability can be easily maintained. In addition, a two-dimensional physical model was constructed for investigation of damages to the upper seams due to mining of the lower seams. Finally, based on the results of investigations, proper gateroads layout was designed and successful extraction was implemented for panel 1357 in the No.5 seam.

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

On 30 April 2004, a large scale slope failure incident occurred at the external waste dump facility of the South Field Mine, in the Western Macedonia Lignite Center, Greece. This landslide involved the mobilization of waste overburden material (that was continuously deposited for the last 20 years) in the order of 40 Mm3, while the material that moved outside the boundaries of the waste dump was in the order of 3 Mm3. The factors that led to failure as well as the procedures and measures taken in order to stabilize the failure and resume normal operations at the South Field Mine are presented and discussed. Emphasis is given to the impact on mine operations and the cost related to resuming of normal production operation as well as to implementing important modifications and improvements of the materials handling system.

Bauxite is derived by surficial weathering of aluminosilicate rock forming minerals under warm and humid climatic conditions. Variations in climate combined with base level changes promote cyclical, evolutionary weathering/concentration patterns, the residual products of which are closely controlled by biological activity. Rock decomposition results mainly from hydrolysis, chelation and solution, the effects being (a) removal of bases and silica in dilute solution, (b) depletion of iron in areas where low pH-Eh prevail and, (c) concentration through direct precipitation, or more generally via intermediate amorphous phases, of aluminium hydrates in variable associations with iron hydrates and clay minerals. Bauxites can be regarded as aluminous soils, and as such they result from cyclic or polygenetic pedogenesis. The ferralitic pedological evolution is essential for bauxite formation. Under some specific conditions, related to local climate and parent rock composition, the podsolic- or andosolic-type of pedogenesis is an effective precursor to bauxitization.

After a decade of high copper prices, major mining companies are renewing their interest in purchasing operating properties and/or developing ore bodies. An existing operation carries with it a history that can present unique opportunities, while a greenfield operation allows for the establishment of a defined culture. Capital investments are distinctly different. A comparison of BHP Copper's Robinson operation, a greenfield property, and BHP Copper's Tintaya operation, a government owned Peruvian property, will provide insights into mining, concentrating and cultural differences between North and South America operations. Mine No. 95 is located in Harrison County about 5 miles west of Shinnston, WV, with coal properties covering the northwest corner of Harrison County and the southwest corner of Marion County and with adequate Pittsburgh seam reserves to support the mine for many years. The mine was opened in 1967 and was planned, projected and operated as a room and pillar mine. It is located on a spur branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, has rail loading facilities and shipped by rail during its development stage. In 1972 it was converted to a mine mouth power station supplier and now transports coal by conveyor belt directly to the Harrison Power Station of Allegheny Power System. In 1971 the first longwall unit was installed in a selected area of the mine and immediately an orderly system of planning was developed to overcome the restrictions associated with longwall mining. The first was the development of the technique necessary for the plugging of abandoned oil and gas wells that existed in the area. With the assistance of the Morgan- town Energy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines, this restriction was overcome and thus opened a great potential for longwall mining in northern West Virginia. Other restrictions that had to be considered for longwall planning were dwellings and other improvements, snap top zones, water courses, and adequate bleeder systems, and the handling and treatment of mine drainage. In 1975 the second longwall unit was installed and soon therefore became a total longwall mine.

Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD The original application of sublevel caving was in ground so weak that it would collapse even in small headings when the support was removed. Heavily tim¬bered drifts were driven across the ore body; the timber was removed at the end of the drift, and the ore caved and slushed out. When dilution became excessive the next set was removed and so on. This method gave high dilution and poor recovery and was slow, but it was the only way to mine this type of ore body at that time. In more recent times the method has been adapted to stronger ground which needs to be drilled and blasted, so it is not a caving method as far as the ore is con¬cerned. However, the method does rely on the walls to cave and so the name sublevel caving has been retained. The method as presently generally applied is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Sublevels are established at approximately 7.6 to 12.2-m (25 to 40-ft) vertical intervals. They are usually accessed from a ramp system. A haulage drift is driven down the strike of the ore body, but in the waste. Production drifts are turned off the haulage drift and driven across the ore body on about 10.7-m (35-ft) horizontal centers. This divides the ore body into a geometrical pattern. Slot raises are driven at the end of the drifts near the ore-waste contact and the slot is expanded to the shape of the fan drilling. Up holes are drilled to break towards the slot at burdens of 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft). They are drilled past the next sublevel to the production drift im¬mediately above. When a sufficient number of fans has been drilled, production can start by blasting one or two fans at a time towards the slot. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units are used to muck the ore, which rills out into the drift. At first, when only a small area is mined, the walls may not cave, and the operation will be similar to open stoping. Later, sloughing from the walls will fill any voids created, and the ore after blasting will be con¬tained by the caved waste and gravitate downwards as mucking proceeds. It is well known that the elimination of impurities such as iron pyrite, shale, clay, silica, etc., from coal, by floatation [Sun, 1954; Aplan, 1983] and selective oil agglomeration [Keller and Burry; 1990] depends on the fact that coal is hydrophobic, and the impurities are hydrophilic. The water contact angle has long been used to evaluate the hydrophobic nature of coal, first by Brady and Gauger (1940), who demonstrated that the contact angle of water on coals increases with rank, and passes through a maximum at about 88% carbon. Brown (1962) found that the contact angle of coal decreased with increasing ash content. Sun, and also Aplan, have reported a direct relationship between values of the contact angle and rank, and have related the contact angle to coal floatability. Horsley and Smith (1951) first demonstrated that the captive bubble contact angle may be used to characterize the hydrophobicity of a coal containing more than 80% carbon DAF, while Parekh and Aplan (1978) have shown that the sessile-drop technique may be used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of coal of any rank.

The formation of surface films on pyrite has been studied through electrochemical techniques of cyclic voltametry and AC impedance measurements. The characteristics of the surface films depend upon the conditions of oxidation and the source of pyrite. At potentials near 0.0 V, some pyrites have large values of polarization resistance showing a certain degree of passivity. Some pyrites show more passivation than the others, however. On oxidation, metastable phases of Fe(OH2) and Fe(OH3) form which transform to more stable 3 phases on aging. The growth of surface films near the corrosion potential of pyrite follows a linear kinetics which is attributed to a chemical (or an electrochemical) reaction as the rate determining step. The surface film is considered to be a hydroxide or an oxide rather than sulfur because the later is expected to be limited to a monolayer in alkaline solutions. This study has also demonstrated that AC impedance measurements can be used to study the growth characteristics of films at mineral/ solution interfaces.

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

As shown in former publications there are problems in load sharing of backstops in multiple drives of conveyors. Therefore, detailed calculation methods and design recommendations are required. In this paper various designs of load sharing methods are described and a dynamic torque calculation method will be presented. With this method the loadsharing properties for low and high speed backstops are calculated and compared. These properties depend on the spring characteristic of the drive train between backstop and load. Furthermore, the properties depend on the method of torquearm support and shock absorber configuration. Remarkable differences for external and internal backstops are shown
