INTRODUCTION The basis for any measures in radiation protection is the quantitative assessment of the radiation exposure. Due to the extensive requirement in health physics manpower and related cost it is necessary to develop certain criteria regarding the necessity of monitoring and the selection of population groups to be monitored. Depending on the overall objective of the particular programme, the specific requirements for the measurement of atmospheric levels of radon, thoron and their daughters for practical radiation protection purposes differ significantly for those in the case of research applications, such as use of data for epidemiological studies. As part of the OECD-NEA Programme on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring Task Group 1 reviewed available models for lung dosimetry in the case of inhalation of radon 222, radon 220 and their daughters (James et al., 1981). Using defined reference atmospheres for underground- and open-pit mining conditions as well as for dwellings, normalized conversion factors were calculated for the mean bronchial dose (mGy) per Working Level Month exposure (WLM). Task Group 2 discussed the features and adequacy of the Working Level (WL)-concept as a physical correlative of the absorbed lung dose and its limits of confidence and accuracy (Johnson and Leach, 1981). The WL-concept was found acceptable for radiation protection purposes provided that modifying factors like particle size, unattached fraction and respiratory minute volume did not cause the effective dose equivalent per WLM as calculated by either the James-Birchall or Jacobi-Eisfeld lung models to be more than 50 % above that given by ICRP of 0.01 Sv/WLM. For application in epidemiological studies the WLconcept is considered acceptable if the calculated absorbed dose to the tissue does not vary by more than 50 % (at the 95 % confidence level) from that given for defined reference conditions. In the following, objectives and requirements for the measurement of radon, thoron and their daughters are discussed for operational health physics routine and special research applications according to the scheme outlined in Fig. 1.

Point load strength (Is50) and slake durability (ID2) indices provide a measure of the strength and durability of rock fragments and are related to the alteration intensity and frictional resistance of the materials. Samples were collected from the rock piles, alteration scars and debris flows at the Questa mine with the purpose of examining relationships between Is50 and ID2, mineralogy, chemistry, weathering, hydrothermal alteration, and other geotechnical parameters. The Is50 from the various rock piles ranges from 0.6-8.2 MPa and the ID2 ranges from 80.9-99.5%. The Is50 and ID2 results indicate that the samples from the debris flows are stronger (average Is50= 4.0 MPa and ID2= 98.4%) than the rock-pile samples and that the alteration scar samples are weaker (average Is50 = 2.8 MPa and ID2 = 89.2%) than the rock-pile samples, but still most of these rocks are strong in terms of their Is50 and ID2. The Is50 decreases as the degree of alteration increases in some rock pile and alteration scar samples, but not in all. However, the majority of the rock fragments within the rock piles still indicate high strength, even after 25-40 years of weathering.

Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

INTRODUCTION The Northwestern University Rigid Block Model (NURBM) has been extended to explicitly model dilatant behavior of rock joints. By incorporating dilatancy, the resistance to shear displacement and slip, which previously was limited to simple Coulomb friction, along edge-to- edge contacts is now provided by contact roughness as well as frictional resistance. The explicit formulation is based on concepts presented by Plesha (1985) in which a plasticity-based phenomenological approach was used to model dilatant joint behavior. This approach has been modified to allow for joint closure upon reversal of shear deformation. After presenting a brief description of the new joint constitutive relationship, model behavior will be illustrated with two examples. The first involves a simple two-block model to simulate a cyclic direct shear test of a single joint. The second example involves simulation of a large cavern in a moderately jointed rock mass subjected to cyclic excitation. It will be shown that in- creasing joint roughness increases cavern stability by interlocking of adjacent blocks. JOINT CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONSHIP Within NURBM adjacent two-dimensional rigid blocks interact along their common edge-to-edge contact with contact forces transmitted at the contact midpoint. The contact constitutive relationship was originally restricted to a Coulomb friction yield criterion with no tensile stresses permitted along the smooth contact surfaces. The local coordinate system for any contact is described as shown in Figure 1 with the elastic stresses and displacements related by the linear- elastic constitutive law: [ ] The contact microstructure has been modeled as Patton-type saw-tooth surfaces such as shown in Figure 2. Sliding can be active along the right asperity with angle aR and length lR or along the left asperity with angle a and length lL. In general, aR and aL will difkr as will lR and lL but for purposes of this paper it has been assumed that these angles and lengths are identical. By a simple transformation, the microscopic asperity stresses can be expressed in terms of the macroscopic contact stresses [ ] If Coulomb friction is assumed along the asperity surfaces, the plastic slip condition will be [ ] where µ is the friction coefficient with the convention that compressive stress is negative. When F is negative, the behavior is elastic and when F is zero, slip can ensure. The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regards "whole diesel exhaust" as "a potential occupational carcinogen." Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, N02, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols. The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality. Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters. Concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3.

Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.

In the mining and processing industry, the maintenance plan has often evolved rather than being consciously set up resulting in an overreliance on breakdown and fixed-time maintenance (planned maintenance). Historically mining and processing plant equipment has been robust and less automated than modem equipment, making it relatively easy to work on. Mining and processing plants have relied on large and expensive maintenance departments to enable rapid attention to breakdowns. Maintenance itself can result in excessive downtime and costs. This results from the requirement to take the machinery off-line to carry out (possibly unnecessary and invasive) maintenance. The danger of infant mortality after it has been put back on line again and also the cost of the maintenance action itself contributes to costs. A goal of any well-run maintenance program is to have the lowest cost while providing 100% capacity 100% of the time to operations. When maintenance investments are at a minimum, the cost of lost production is at its highest. As maintenance effort and investments are intelligently increased, the production loss gradually decreases until the lowest combined cost is achieved. This is the maintenance goal. A road map is needed to achieving maintenance excellence. This article addresses a "Road Map" to achieving maintenance excellence. INTRODUCTION Mining and processing industry maintenance is big business. A world-class maintenance program is characterized by maintenance excellence.

The paper presents the outline of the results in the algorithms and software of the microprocessor-based system for the powerful drugline bucket automatic motion, as well as the technological process control and functional diagnostics of the electrical equipment. The system is, aimed at the increasing both the draglines' working efficiency and the professional, competence of the operators. The excavator-dragline, equipped by the automatized operation, diagnostic and information processing system, possesses considerable technological: flexibility, which can widen therefore its field of application. The tasks of the dragline bucket motion optimal operation, programming of the excavation and overburden dumping processes, as well as the tasks of the control and the analysis of the technological parameters and the diagnostics of electrical equipment conditions, are defined in the paper. In our paper we present the results of these tasks being solved, providing the algorithms of the main mechanisms for the automatic operation for the swinging bucket controlled motion, the algorithms of the statistical analysis of the working efficiency parameters the algorithms of the diagnostics for electrical driving systems. The algorithms of the motion operation are constructed using the predicting dynamic models. The diagnostic algorithms at the normal working conditions form a number of algebraic invariants always equal to Ø with the accuracy up to when the electrical equipment is parametrically adequate. The algorithms of evaluating and analysis of the excavation efficiency make use of the direct measurement and analytical identification. The working condition and quality of the operation and control algorithms are investigated by simulation and natural testing. The results of the mathematical simulation of the bucket motion (with the 20 m3 capacity) of the excavator-dragline with the boom of 90 m in length are given in the paper.

The paper covers mining operations and preparation of the ore prior to metallurgical treatment in the Process Plant. Mining operations are primarily concerned with the delivery to Ore Preparation of a balanced ore feed within fairly rigid specifications as to both ore type and chemical analysis. The mining method, systems of geological and engineering control, and the equipment employed are therefore reviewed in this context. In Part One of the paper the physical and geological characteristics of the orebodies, including the varied nature of the ore itself, are first described. Orebody evaluation, the calculation and classification of ore reserves, mining planning and forecasting to ensure continuity of production are covered, and the particular problems presented by sampling, the erratic distribution of ore values and the variation in the density of the ores are also mentioned. Mine design and ore excavation practice are described, together with the way in which they have evolved with recent developments in modern mining equipment. In Part Two of the paper, a detailed description of the Ore Preparation plant is given, centred around the concept of rubbling as a means of separation of the barren hard boulders from soft lateritic ore. Ore blending and ore reclamation operations are explained followed by a detailed description of the drying and crushing plant. The importance of the control of moisture content and ore sizing in the feed to the metallurgical plant is emphasized.

As part of a joint project on fine particle processing, sponsored by the Consortium de Recherche Minérale (COREM), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Hydro-Quebec, two flotation plant circuits were sampled to identify and quantify the causes of mineral losses within several particle size ranges. Size distributions, size-by-size assays and global chemical assays (Cu, Zn, Fe, S) were determined for the major streams. Size distributions were measured in 13 classes by sieving, cyclo sizing (-45 µm), and laser beam diffraction analysis. BILMAT, a material balance computation software package, was used to optimise the sampling, to estimate the unmeasured variables, and to assess and improve the quality of the information generated. The methodology has been extended to correct cyclo sizer data and reduce discontinuities of up to 20% at the transition from sieves to cyclo sizer. The paper describes the methodology and the main conclusions emerging from material inventory of the flow sheets.

Introduction In April 1998, AIS Sommer GmbH of Germany delivered the first laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) analyzer to the mining industry. LKAB's Kiruna iron ore mine in Sweden shared the costs and the risk of building the prototype. This marks the beginning of LIF analysis as a technique for quality control in mining and mineral processing. Photoluminescence analysis is well established. In most laboratories, fluorescence spectrometers are standard equipment for quality or pollution control. LIF is being used in several applications, including combustion studies and particle image velocimetry. However, it has mostly been used in laboratory environments. The availability of rugged lasers for industrial use brings this powerful tool to the forefront of production, even in the rough conditions found in mining and minerals processing. Laser-induced fluorescence Basics. Fluorescence of naturally occurring minerals has fascinated man since scientific investigation of this phenomenon commenced about 200 years ago. However, importance in industrial application and peripheral activities. Hand sorting of ore under ultraviolet (UV) lamps is seen as an archaic method. Long gone are the days when geologists set out at night with UV hand lamps to find valuable ore deposits, especially those of tungsten. Today, fluorescent minerals are considered collectors' items and museum exhibits. In the late 1960s (Hemphill, 1968) and during the 1970s, attempts to use lasers for excitation of fluorescence in minerals led to the development of an airborne fluorosensor (Seigel and Robbins, 1980). However, this prospecting technology did not gain industry acceptance and vanished from the market. During the past seven years, ongoing research of the LIF of minerals resulted in new findings that give good reason to revive the interest in fluorescence and its use in the mineral industries (Broicher and Zydek, 1995; Broicher, 1998). Fluorescence is defined as the short-lived form of photoluminescence, in which matter emits visible radiation during and after irradiation with light – the fluorescence generally being of a longer wavelength than the irradiation. Fluorescence of matter is described by: • the absorption spectrum, • the emission spectrum, • the decay curve and • the quantum efficiency. The absorption spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity in a fixed spectral band as a function of the excitation wavelength, while the emission spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity at varying emission wave- lengths for a fixed excitation wavelength (Fig. 1). The decay curves describe the exponential decrease of the fluorescence intensity with time. The quantum efficiency is the ratio of irradiating energy to emitted energy. Table I contains the production figures for each of these commodities in the United States and the world. Specifications for concentrates or final mineral product are also summarized as well as prim for them at the time the section was written. In each chapter an attempt has been made to provide the reader with information on the common commercial mineral or minerals involved with the commodity, some of the uses. the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these process are utilized.

INTRODUCTION Las Vegas has recently been termed the “Construction Capital of the Country”. It has also been acknowledged as the fastest growing city in the country for several years running. The rapid growth improves the economic picture of the region but it also imparts unusual demands on the area’s infrastructure. In 1994 the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA)was working on a master plan to address the rapid growth. A long range analysis revealed the need for additional water treatment capacity and delivery systems. Short term projections showed that the current system would reach capacity in the summer of 1997 with the possibility of demand exceeding the supply. The River Mountains Tunnel #2 is part of a $150M scheme to quickly upgrade the system to meet the short term demand, improve the overall system operation and allow for a smooth transition into the larger additions being planned for the future. The SNWA selected Carollo/Black & Veatch (CBV) to provide detailed design and construction management for the upgrades. The River Mountains Contracts consisted of five separate contracts broken out separately to stream line a very aggressive (just 34 months) design and construction schedule. Necessary work included four miles of excavated and lined tunnel, connections from existing pipelines to and from the new tunnel including large diameter (to 3.66m(144 in)) valves, a 18 927cu m (5 million gal) regulating reservoir, a surge tank and a 170 343cu m (45 million gal) reservoir to add additional storage to the system. Notice to Proceed was given to Kajima Engineering and Construction (Kajima) on May22, 1995 for the construction of the River Mountains Tunnel #2. The design called for a tunnel to be driven 6070m (19 915ft) in rock and lined to a finished diameter of 3.71m (12.17ft).Excavation began on December 14, 1995 and holed through on April 30, 1996. Lining began on June 25, 1996 and a notice of Substantial Completion was issued on December 13,1996. This paper describes the measures taken to complete the tunnel in 18 months from Notice to Proceed to Substantial Completion. THE RIVER MOUNTAINS SITE The River Mountains are a low range of rugged mountains separating the Las Vegas Valley from its main supply of water, the Colorado River at Lake Mead. They are volcanic in origin and the harsh desert environment has left them as expanses of exposed bedrock rising 305m (1000ft) above the valley with little or no vegetation. An existing 3.05m (10ft)

My qualification to speak on the globalization of the the mining industry comes from having worked in the industry in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australasia in positions ranging from exploration geologist to chief executive. For about a third of my career I have lived and worked in the Southern Hemisphere. And for much of the rest of my career I have been involved in or responsible for activities in the Southern Hemisphere. This has given me the opportunity to experience globalization from the sharp end, as it were. This means speaking English with an Australian accent, Spanish with a Chilean accent, French with a West African accent and Dutch with an English accent. My topic is globalization, especially of the mining industry from a Southern Hemisphere perspective and specifically the experience and history of Gencor in that context. First, I will say a little about what globalization means to the southern part of the world: How and why the South differs from the North and how the challenge of globalization affects a south-based company differently than a northern one. I will also detail how Gencor has made significant progress in globalizing through the acquisition of mining assets from Shell. As Fig. 1 shows, I have divided up the world into northern and southern components, rather than hemispheres. The southern world comprises mainly countries that have emerged from the status of economic - if not political - colonies of nations such as England, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and, surprisingly, Italy and Germany. I have not considered the Indochinese and Arabian peninsulas in my southern world. The emergence of the. former is still in its early stages while the latter is clearly a part of the northern economic system. Large parts of Africa and South America are geometrically in the Northern Hemisphere but economically in the southern world. The reverse is the case for the IndoPersian peninsula. With the distinguished exception of Australia and South Africa, most of these countries nationalized their mining industries and mineral patrimony after attaining political independence. A major element of the globalization of the mining industry is related to the privatization of the mining industry in these countries and to the opening up of their min¬eral patrimony to non-national exploitation. The Southern Hemisphere is the watery part of the world. It is almost three quarters ocean as against a slight preponderance of land in the north. Economically, ocean areas have only a fraction of the productivity of land, except in a few oil-rich areas like the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. The consequence is that even on an economically level playing field we would expect the south to generate only about one third of the world's economic product.

The Green River formations in the Western U.S.A. contains vast amounts of petroleum reserves in oil shale deposits. Exploitation of this petroleum reserve calls for large scale mining of the oil shale. Applicable mining methods include conventional underground mining using roan and pillar, sub-level caving and block caving; underground insitu retorting of oil shale and open pit mining. Roam and pillar mining offers one of the most economic methods of underground mining of oil shale. A 2.4 x l09 litre per year (50,000 barrels per day) of crude oil production would require a daily oil shale production of 100,000 tomes per day from underground operations. For this large production, a highly mechanized room and pillar mining muld utilize large capacity diesel equipment such as 85 tonne trucks and 8m front end loaders. The total air requirements of an oil shale mining operations can. be as high as 28443/s. Ventilation planning for such a large scale underground mining operation presents a formidable task. The major objectives of providing ventilation air to underground workings are to dilute airborne .dust and diesel fumes to harmless levels, and to insure that the mine environment is compatible with the health and safety of mine personnel. Regulation of air velocities and air temperatures is a major factor in mine environmental control. Colorado State law requires that a minimum of 0.047m3/s of fresh air be supplied for each kW of diesel power operating underground. Additionally, 0.047m3/s of fresh air must be supplied for each underground employee, and a minimum air velocity of 0.15m/s must be maintained in all working places. It is desirable to exceed this minimum velocity in order to prevent stratification of ventilation air. This paper examines ventilation requirements for the underground mine, with respect to air quality requirements and distribution of air in mine workings in light of the above regulations. Analyses were made for sane typical mining plans to determine airflow resistance or pressure drops and fan horsepower requirements. In addition, the possible occurrence of high concentrations of toxic gases, was examined. Expected temperature levels in mine workings were approximated.

This paper will introduce and discuss a range of techniques that utilise new developments in Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) for the investigation of incidents and accidents in mining environments. The future of mining safety may not be totally led by the demands of the mine operators, but sometimes by the academics, commercial software developers and legal pioneers who generate new ideas and products and set admissibility precedents which may change the way certain traditional investigative operations are performed. In any accident investigation the outcome from the investigating team is often a complex affair and the results of the investigation are often reported in large, convoluted documents. Computer-generated forensic reconstructions allow investigators to present accident scenarios in an accessible and easily understood, visual manner. Surveys in the US have also shown that people have increased recall of computer-generated images over many other forms of evidence. The AIMS Research Unit in the UK have been pioneering the use of Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology for both industrial and road traffic accident reconstruction. This paper and accompanying presentation will contain examples of forensic reconstructions developed by the authors that explain some of the methodologies used to ensure admissibility of this type of digital evidence. The paper will contain a number of case studies based on UK and International industrial accidents. The paper will focus on how AIMS Research is extending the capabilities of the accident reconstructions created to take advantage of the latest developments in VR technology. As digital technology makes its impact within professional and commercial fields, computer generated forensic reconstructions will form important admissible evidence in the courtrooms of the future. The technology will also make a great impact in the way we train our workforces, with highly visual three-dimensional (3D) interactive training tools becoming the norm. Acceptance by the public, courts and workforce is an important issue, and implementation strategies must be considered carefully.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines (The Bureau) remote sensing researchers at the Denver (CO) Research Center, have been investigating computerized methods to detect and map surface linear features called "lineaments" for ground hazard assessment in mines. Many of these lineaments at the test mine site were found to correlate to subsurface geologic discontinuities such as faults, fractures, and joints that intersect coal seams at depth. These features adverse1 y affect the roof and rib integrity in underground mines, thus contributing to rock failures that may result in injuries to mine workers and loss of production. Advance knowledge of the existence of such hazardous geologic features can aid in mine planning and development. Lineaments may be observed in a variety of images of the earth's surface. Linear features that can be observed using Landsat mu1ti spectral scanner data (MSS) images range from regional (greater than 3 miles in length) to an intermediate length of from 1 to 3 miles. These images are recorded in discrete radiation bands in the green, red, and near-infrared portions of the el ectromaynetic spectrum. These data are acquired from the EROS Data Center of the U.S Geological Survey, Sioux Falls, SD, in digital format on magnetic tapes that are suitable for processing on certain minicomputers. Shorter lineaments length (less than 1 mile) can be observed in high- to low-a1titude aerial photography, radar, and infrared images with image scale ratios of 1:1,000,000 or less. These linear features can correlate to smaller dimensioned faults, and to fracture and joint sets at the local geologic scale. Other informational sources can help substantiate 1ineament analyses, such as well logs, mine naps, topographic data, and geophysical data acquired over the study site. The most common method of determining airflow employed by mine ventilation engineers is the product of i) the average air velocity as measured by a vane anemometer and stopwatch through a continuous traversing technique, with ii) the cross-sectional area of the roadway. This method requires the vane anemometer to accumulate the total flow over the duration of the traverse. Historically, this has been facilitated by a mechanical analog instrument that has either a counter or set of dials that display the flow. Common instruments of this type are Airflow Development's AM5000, Davis's, or Taylor's Biram type anemometer. The AM5000 is widely used in the Canadian mining industry but is no longer available. Therefore, regulatory authorities have seen fit to evaluate presently available commercial instruments to replace the AM5000. This paper describes an instrument evaluation contracted by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada which regulates the uranium industry. Over the last two decades there have been numerous advances in the development of electronic air velocity meters. Currently available units have the following features: a) battery operation; b) are compact and can be hand-held; c) employ LCD's, and microelectronic circuitry; and d) provide a time integration for the duration of a traverse. These features make such instruments a possible replacement to the analog units and stopwatch determinations. This paper details five of the new generation of vane anemometers plus a vortex air meter, and it explores their limitations in comparison to analog units. Specific consideration is given to linear response, the effects of yaw, traversing speeds and ergonomics relating to both handling and use. The paper concludes with some features that are attractive and should be considered when purchasing a new anemometer.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is one of two undersea tunnels which are part of the Boston Harbor Clean-Up Program. The tunnel is 7.7 km (25,160 ft) long, bored to a 4.3 m (14 ft) diameter in the Cambridge Argillite Formation and was finished to a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter final concrete lining. The owner is the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) who is a regional authority responsible for overall design and construction. The tunnel's primary purpose is the transport of untreated effluent from Nut Island facility in Quincy, MA to the new treatment plant at Deer Island. Two sludge lines are installed for the transport of sludge from Deer Island to Nut Island. During construction the contractor encountered fault zones, fractured strata, and soft ground tunnel sections which liberated more ground water than was originally anticipated by the project designer. Ground water was controlled during mining and the placing of the final lining. The final lining of cast-in-place concrete had to be backfill grouted to cut off water inflows and provide contact for equal tunnel loading which is critical in long-term design. This paper deals with an engineered backfill grouting system which was the first of its type to be used in North America. It discusses the geological conditions encountered, the design criteria used in the evaluation process, and an indepth review of the various system components. It demonstrates how contractors can use knowledgeable and professional industry suppliers to solve difficult construction problems.
