The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, e.g., the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Center, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter adaptable to this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer is believed to be novel.

This paper describes the development of a monitoring architecture that allows for continuous monitoring of the process of mining, the underground environment, the state of the rockmass and its response to mining. The system is based on an open standard and is non-propriety. It allows for dense sensor arrays in the workplace, wire less communication to the closest power line, and TCP/IP communication to a central server. Continuous monitoring and quantification of the appropriate parameters allows a mine to optimise its mine process; to dynamically access the safety and health risk to people and equipment; and to quantify exposure to potential heath hazards such as dust, gas or noise. Current application examples of continuous monitoring include an application to optimise drilling and blasting thought fragmentation monitoring; an application of wireless sensor network-based monitoring in to provide early detection of potential rockfalls; and a trail to continuously assess the gold grade at the shaft through correlation with radioactivity. It is unlikely that a single monitored parameter will provide adequate knowledge of the assessed risk or even an optimisation approach. Multiple parameters are being combined using cognitive science tools such as Bayesian theory and other statistical methods to improve the accuracy and relevance of, for example, risk quantification. The decision maker is not confronted with massive amounts of raw data but rather with a single knowledge statement such a probability of failure, a human physiological strain index or an optimisation index.

"Grinding is one of the most energy consuming unit operations and is also a very inefficient and costly process. Therefore, it is of great importance to run the grinding process as efficiently as possible. The most common way today to control grinding processes is by measuring the power draw of the mill and try to keep it at a maximum level. However, some studies (Kawatra, 1989, Koivistoinen, 1989, Moys, 1989) have shown that this measurement doesn.t reflect everything that takes place inside a mill. Among other parameters like slurry rheology, temperature and charge behaviour, the volumetric filling of a grinding mill seems to have a large influence on the grinding efficiency (Herbst, 1988, Koivistoinen, 1992, Vermeulen, 1988). A problem in attempting to measure those parameters has been to get a sensor that is both robust and sensitive enough for continuous on-line measurement.This paper presents a method for the measurement of the apparent filling level in a pilot ball mill equipped with the Metso Continuous Charge Measurement system (CCM). In this technique a strain gauge sensor is mounted on a flat steel spring which is fitted into a recess underneath a lifter bar. In addition, a conductivity probe, the Boliden Grinding Measurement System (GMS), is mounted in another lifter bar with the purpose of comparing the two measurements. To visualise the behaviour of the charge a DEM modelling technique is used.The results indicate that the system is capable of following the normal variation that occurs in the mill. The signal also very well reflect changes in operating variables such as ball charge level, pulp density and rotational speed. By studying the nature and different features of the signal one can get a better understanding of milling circuit dynamics. Another feature of the technique is the possibility for an operator to continuously follow the grinding process and thereby run the process under optimal conditions."

Barometric pressure and its variation in deep underground workings have a considerable effect on ventilation conditions. Pressure changes which create transient states of air flow and air parameters in workings are especially significant. Experiments have shown that pressure changes have a remarkable effect on air parameters at mine workings and hence, attempts to evaluate the scale of this phenomenon are of value. Continuous monitoring of the barometric pressure on the surface of mines allows for the detection of changes in pressure which undoubtedly influence alternations of pressure in the underground areas of mines. Very important factors are the internal disturbances of pressure within a mine ventilation system due to variable conditions of fan operation and the operation of a winding machine where a mine cage moving in a shaft causes piston like disturbances. Local transient disturbances caused by temporary opening/closing of air stoppings due to personnel or underground transport traffic are of importance. The results of over two years of observations of barometric pressure and its influence on pressure variation in underground mine workings are presented in this paper. The observations were possible through the installation of pressure sensors at selected points of the downcast shaft in a mine. Of interest are the observations of the transient states of pressure and other air parameters caused by emergency fan stoppage, movement of a mine cage and changes due to the opening of air stoppings. Data acquired during experiments of opening and closing air stoppings were used for the validation of a flow model in a long working.

A breaker line support (BLS) monitoring system, BLSmon, has been designed and constructed by the CSIRO and installed and commissioned at Laleham No.1 Colliery, Queensland. This system was designed to record hydraulic leg pressure and canopy position measurements and relay these, in real time, to the surface. The system has shown itself to be capable of operating on the BLSs without any adverse affect on production, Analysis of the results of the monitoring exercise has shown that rate of change of leg pressures on the BLSs could be used as an aid in the prediction of adverse mining conditions. Under favourable mining conditions the supports were observed to initially unload from the set pressure, this unloading reduced with time and by the end of a typical lift cycle had either ceased or reversed slightly. This behaviour was considered to be due to one of four possible causes, these being; the compaction of floor debris, and/or compaction of the floor, and/or crushing of the roof and /or support creep. The actual cause can only be determined through detailed monitoring of both roof and support convergence. However observational data would suggest that compaction of debris and softened floor material beneath the supports was the most likely cause. The few positive loading rates recorded under these conditions were of short duration and occurred towards the end of individual lifts. Where mining conditions were unfavourable the negative rates of change of pressure, unloading of the support, were reduced throughout a lift, in both duration and magnitude, when compared with favourable mining conditions. Over the same period the positive rates of change were observed to be greater. The rate of change of loading and convergence can be utilised to identify the onset of instability in the lift area. However, before this facility can be utilised by the mine for the reliable prediction of instability more monitored data and sophisticated processing techniques are required. A mechanism has been postulated for the deformation behaviour of the roof and pillars in a mechanised pillar extraction operation from the continuously monitored data, observational data and results of previous studies. The 7 m wide fenders were observed to yield under abutment stresses before lifting commenced. The stability of these fenders throughout the lifting sequence was considered to be dependant upon the magnitude of their post peak load carrying capability. This is influenced by the post peak stiffness and the extent of roof lowering in the vicinity of the fender. Difficulties with fender extraction occurred where remnant coal left standing in the goaf caused uncaved goat to bridge to the mined fender. Difficulties were also experienced where sub-vertical jointing occurred in the roof of the split reducing it's ability to bridge effectively. Despite the relatively short monitoring period, the potential role and application of continuous monitoring in advancing understanding of the rock mass response to mechanised pillar extraction operations has been demonstrated. This understanding now requires enhancement and shows great potential for aiding the optimisation of mechanised pillar extraction operations.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. The Top End of the Northern Territory lies in the monsoonal zone and receives rain during the November-April period. Initially, at the start of the wet season, rain storms are localised, but, following the descent of the monsoonal trough from below the equator, widespread rain occurs. Overflow incidents at mine sites tend to arise midway through the annual wet season when excess water accumulated in ponds begins to discharge to the external environment. Remote-access monitoring may be undertaken at mine sites using equipment to continuously measure water quality parameters with storage of the information on a data logger. The data is then retrieved by visiting the site and transferring it to a portable computer or by remotely accessing the system using a telemetry system and transmission via telephone, VHF/UHF or satellite. Such systems are readily available and vary in cost depending on the sophistication of the data transfer system. Available sensors for continuous monitoring include those for conductivity, temperature, pH and other ion selective electrodes, eg nitrate, and water level. Of these variables, conductivity is most useful due to its inherent accuracy and stability of reading. Remote monitoring capability is able to provide: (i) more intensive monitoring of key issues; (ii) more timely information; (iii) correct perspective on the degree of environmental problem; and (iv) information from remote locations, which would be difficult to monitor by more conventional methods. Examples are given for applications of continuously logged measurement of conductivity of waters discharging to drains and in creeks at Pine Creek, Ranger, Nabarlek and Woodcutters mines in the Northern Territory. These applications demonstrate the timeliness of the continuous monitoring technique.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) initiated a program in 1976 to develop and demonstrate an instrument system for on-line continuous measurement of coal properties. The program has focused on the use of Prompt Neutron Activation Analysis (PNAA) for elemental determinations and microwave absorption for moisture determination. One of the major results of the EPRI program is the development of the CONAC (Continuous On-Line Analysis of Coal) instrument, with Science Applications, Inc. (SAI) as the prime contractor and Kennedy Van Saun Corporation as a subcontractor.

This paper comprises a description of on-stream analysis instrumentation, including sample handling, X-ray optics and data processing. It also includes a discussion of some typical applications of an on-stream analyzer as related to the mineral processing industry. Introduction T WO automatic X-ray spectrometers have been developed for the simultaneous analysis of as many as six elements in a given sample. These instruments, namely the On-Stream Analyzer and the new Vacuum Simultaneous Spectrometer, have been designed specifically for process control in industry where large numbers of static samples or a number of flowing sample streams must be analyzed continuously with both speed and accuracy. This paper is concerned particularly with the application of these instruments for the continuous analysis of dynamic samples. The Instruments The On-Stream Analyzer and the Vacuum Simultaneous Spectrometer are intended to serve industry by offering two basic approaches to the problem of continuous sampling of flowing sample streams. The On-stream Analyzer (Figure 1) is designed for the completely automatic and unattended analysis of flowing sample streams in a programmed cycle of operation.

Reaction bath temperature is a major factor in processing liquid metals and in many applications where a balance between process duration and temperature has to be found to run a procedure efficiently. Also extremes of temperature can decrease the output of a process if too cold or even make it impossible, conversely overheating can be detrimental to both the product and furnace integrity. With the help of the new online temperature measurement system very accurate monitoring of the process is possible in contrast to the current routine practice where the temperature is measured periodically with dip thermocouples. The system works with a digital, fiber optic pyrometer, which is embedded in a refractory housing. Installation in the lining is possible below liquid level as nitrogen is blown to keep the system open and to ensure continuous sight from the optical head of the pyrometer to the molten metal through the tuyere. This permanent temperature measurement gives optimal process control with the potential of taking appropriate actions at an early stage enabling proactive process control. Therefore energy savings and even process endpoint detections can be realized.

Carbon addition in the oxide pelletizing process is a big concern at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant since 1976. Laboratory pot-grate testing carried out before the initial start-up of the Port-Cartier plant indicated that the nominal pelletizing grate capacity could be increased by fifteen percent with a suitable carbon addition. Also an improved induration cycle offered the possibility of a significant energy reduction within the process with no adverse effect on pellet quality. A one month plant scale program duplicated the lab test results and confirmed the anticipated cost saving by using these techniques. Since March '80, Sidbec-Normines use coke addition as a current operation. This paper reviews briefly earlier laboratory and in-plant test work carried out to investigate the effects of adding carbon materials to the Fire Lake hematite concentrate, and presents operation techniques and plant results of carbon addition in the Port-Cartier pellet plant.

BELT-CONVEYOR 'history in this country dates back to the end of the eighteenth century. Up to 1896 they were crude in design and application. The second era, dating from 1896 to about 1920, saw special study given to belt construction and idler design. The latter part of this era saw the beginning of the present-day antifriction idler. The third era followed World War I, when industry began to expand rapidly. Mines and quarries, steel mills, and power-generating plants became larger and greater quantities of ore, stone, and coal were being handled. It became vital that belts handle larger capacities, that they be longer, and that they be dependable for 24 hours per day. In this third era a radical change in belt conveyor design and application occurred. The design has became more scientific. Studies have been made to find out what factors influenced the power required for a belt conveyor and it was found that the sag of the belt between idlers and the flattening of the load between idlers had considerable effect on power requirements. So definite initial tension was put into the belt at the loading end and idler spacing was reduced at the foot end to limit this sag. Belt manufacturers made tougher and stronger belts.

A series of performance studies have been conducted using counter-current column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia and utilized a 0.15m (6 in.) I.D. column that was 5.79m (19 ft.) high. The refuse streams tested included both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 100 mesh X O. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5 to 15% while the ash content ranged from 30-60%. The concentrates produced contained 2-10% ash with BTU recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12-1.25 kg/ton (0.25-2.5 lbs/ton) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/ton (0.25 lb/ton) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from 7 different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships utilized to design a full scale installation presently in operation.

A laboratory study was conducted on continuous precipitation of copper, cadmium, mercury and arsenic using thiourea, thioacetamide, sodium sulfide and ammonium sulfide as precipitating agents. Depending on the experimental conditions the metals precipitate with the sulfide donors at different orders and rates. These differences were employed as a basis of several techniques for continuous separation of copper and arsenic, cadmium and arsenic, mercury and copper, and copper, mercury and arsenic. The separation of the metals from industrial waste solutions was also studied. The precipitates obtained were inspected using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, atomic absorption spectrometer and plasma particle counter.

The first continuous pressure disk filter took up industrial-scale operation in Germany in 1976. This paper comments on major components of pressure filter facilities from the point of view of industrial-plant suppliers. For lack of time aspects of economy have not been commented upon. The paper elucidates a number of process-engineering inter-relations. It outlines important development trends from the angle of a machine-building company.

Le Ministère des Richesses naturelles du Québec has continued development work on the process/or direct reaction 0/sodium carbonate with lithium-bearing silicates(Canadian Patent No. 643,843). Recent process improvements have involved continuous pressure leaching, rather than batch leaching, and higher solution concentrations (over 55 g/l Li2CO3. These improvements have been demonstrated on a pilot scale operating on decrepitated spodumene from the Sullivan Mining Group's Quebec deposit. The new process is expected to be very competitive with the conventional sulphuric acid route. The improved flowsheet and main process steps will be described along with pilot-plant results.
