Lack of understanding of useful applications of explosives on construction work stem primarily from the fact that explosion is commonly associated with destruction. On rock excavation and other construction works a certain quantity of explosive is harnessed to perform useful work at the source e.g. blasts to disintegrate rock. Development in rock blasting techniques, including the use of multiple-row blasting with short delay ignition, have made it impossible to excavate rocks close to or below buildings even in closely built-up areas. To permit the use of explosives on construction projects, in ways that will not damage existing structures, guidelines have been developed from careful measurements of intensity of ground vibrations. Accurate electronic instruments are now available for doing this. PLANNING AND CONTROL Blasting operations must be carefully planned and carried out to avoid discomfort to persons or damage to property. This increase in the use of rock blasting in city areas alone has led to a number of problems due to ground vibrations, air shock waves, and the psychological effect of noise. While the latter seldom if ever causes damage, it does create irritation and discomfort to persons living or working near the blasting sites. A result of this is a steady increase in the number of complaints in respect of damage to houses and other premises. Many such complaints are genuine and damage may undoubtedly be caused when incorrect blasting techniques are used.

PROCESSES employing controlled atmospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been associated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and difficult problems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases Controlled atmospheres such as dissociated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties: especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,1 but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. Controlled-blasting experiments in small development drifts were conducted at CANMET's Experimental Mine in 1992 and 1993. The objective of these experiments was to develop suitable controlled-blasting techniques for small development headings that are drilled by jackleg with 32-mm-diam holes. The experimentation was also aimed at providing insight into blast-damage mechanisms. Particular attention was given to the physical-mechanical properties of the rock and the rock-mass structural data. The drift faces were approximately 2.4 by 2.4 m (7.9 x 7.9 ft) in size with 36 to 43 holes drilled to a depth of 2.4 m (7.9 ft). Cartridged water gels, emulsions and semigelatin dynamite were used in the cuts and as primers, ANFO was used as the main explosive and decoupled 19-mm (0.75 in.) diam semigelatin dynamite charges were used in the perimeter holes. Smooth-blasting techniques and presplitting were tested in the underground mine. All of the blasts were monitored with a multichannel blast-vibration monitor, to which was attached sets of high frequency geophones and accelerometers. These experiments demonstrated the efficiency of controlled-blasting techniques for the reduction of blast damage and also demonstrated the need to improve the safety and efficiency of using explosives.

Expansion of central production facilities at the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project in Papua New Guinea (PNG) required excavation of a steep hillside overlooking operating crude oil processing, storage and pumping facilities. Drilling and blasting were used to remove a large volume of rock which varied from hard limestone to soft sandstone, with zones of soft clay and many underground caverns. Similar ground conditions had made it very difficult to predict and control blast-ing results during previous excavation in this area.Special conditions of the project included restrictions on ground vibration levels at a high pressure oil pipeline and pump station within 100m of the blasting area, and a prohibition on any flyrock. As work progressed, some blasting was necessary with 20m of installations being constructed on the levelled project site. Thus blast design, drilling and charging were carefully controlled to avoid any incidents which could interfere with oil production or progress of the construction project.

Drifts are an integral component of underground mining. They provide access for men and material, means for transporting ore and rock and serve as air passageways. In view of their importance on the overall safety, economy and productivity of mines, empirical guidelines for controlled blasting design in drifts have been developed in this study. The application of the proposed concept was described by generating blast hole patterns for a mine with the help of a computer program. The mechanism of blast damage and the need for controlled blasting to alleviate ground control problems in underground mines have been outlined in this paper. The economic analysis between normal-and controlled blasting was performed based on the information from an operating mine. In addition, the review of drift blasting practices and problems in Canadian mines was also carried out in this study.

INTRODUCTION Underground drill and blast excavation is usually accomplished with small diameter holes loaded with high energy explosives. The detonation pressures are extremely high and an extensive amount of energy is dissipated in the process; however, very little of this energy is used to create the specified fracture planes required for excavation. The available energy is expended in producing radially outgoing stress waves, in crushing the adjacent rock, and in producing a dense, randomly oriented radial crack pattern about the holes. This causes several undesirable effects: 1. Overbreak at the perimeter, which results in more muck to remove and extra concrete or shotcrete to fill the voids. 2. Damage to or loosening of the remaining rock at the perimeter which may result in the need for additional support measures. 3. Ground vibrations and/or airblast, which could result in damage to nearby structures and complaints by people living or working in the area. Several steps may be taken to minimize these effects. Where control of the perimeter is desired, smooth blasting techniques are generally employed in which the spacing and burden of perimeter holes are reduced and lighter, decoupled charges are used. Where vibration damage to structures is feared, control is generally exercised by limiting the charge weight per delay period so that the ground vibrations at the nearest structure do not exceed a peak particle velocity of two inches per second. Brisbane’s Airport Link is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, worth a total value of A$4.8 billion. The project is using surface and underground blasting to excavate hard volcanic rock, Brisbane Tuff. This paper tells the story of the most challenging and difficult blast of the whole project: the removal of a remnant pillar of rock (approximately 2250 m3) next to a major arterial road and within 100 m of existing infrastructure including a number of heritage listed buildings, residences and privately owned sensitive receivers. The pillar consisted of a hard rock wall (Brisbane Tuff) between 2 m and 6 m thick, 15 m high and 35 m wide; with in situ precast concrete piles embedded within 1 m of the boundary of the pillar. Orica Australia Pty Limited was contracted by Thiess John Holland, to perform the work in this area, including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives, as well as blast clearance and shotfiring. Access to the area was limited so all explosives and equipment, including the 20 t drill rig, had to be lifted in and out by crane. Due to the nature of the blast, with infrastructure 5 m directly in front of the 15 m high face, there was only ever going to be one chance to get this blast right. This was an extremely complex blast which required the use of a number of different types of packaged explosives, as well as special timing techniques only made possible by using electronic initiating systems. This type of blast is high risk, and is more typical of a building demolition in the urban environment. The blast was fired on the 25 September 2010, and was highly successful. The environmental results for vibration and overpressure were well under the imposed limits, and the embedded concrete piles remained undamaged.

Good blasting practices based on the careful application of explosive energy lead to significantly safer mining operations. Case studies demonstrate how the selection of the correct charge mass, explosive type and round design are vital for extracting the exact amount of rock required and preventing spurious damage to the remaining rock mass. In other cases the explosives are applied to precondition the rock mass, design rockburst resistant support, prevent damage to important excavations and reduce the exposure of miners to unsafe conditions. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model is used to understand the explosive rock interaction and to illustrate and contrast good and bad blasting practices. In all cases, good supervision is required to continue safe mining according to the design. This paper presents the methodology for final wall-controlled blasting utilized at the Grasberg Mine. The resulting optimized slopes representa14%and17% increase to bench face angle (BFA) and inter-ramp slope angle (ISA), respectively. The corresponding increase in both copper and gold recovery was more than 40% greater than forecast for each material. The Grasberg open pit mine is located in the remote jungle province of West Papua Indonesia, at an elevation of 4,200 meters(13,780 ft).With a diameter of approximately 3.5km(2.2 mi), anddepthover1.2km(0.7 mi),P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI)has mined billions of tons of rock from one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits. Grasberg Operation and Engineering implemented a quality driven slope optimization program for the final pushback, with the goal to safely increase recoverable metal through steeper slopes, while utilizing existing infrastructure and equipment. This paper focuses on controlled blasting initiatives, blast monitoring, and as-built slope measurement tracking, although many groups contributed to the success of Grasberg slope optimization. The potential slope optimization area was divided into two sections based on geologic assessment: Area A at radial 200°-270° and Area B at radial 270°-360°. Original slope designs for areas A and B specified ISAs of 51° and 52°, respectively, with all BFAs in the pit at 70°. Through continuous development, collaboration and achievement, the Grasberg final pit accomplished a BFA increase to 80°for all areas, and an ISA increase from 51° to 56°in Area A, and 52°to 60° in Area B.

This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. "Falling rock is one of the major causes of serious injuries and deaths in Swedish mines. The research at the Division of Mining and Underground Construction was therefore directed toward controlled blasting in hard intense jointed rock.The project was started with an extensive literature review. Model tests with a new equivalent model material have been initiated to find ways of improving blasting techniques. The result showed that long cracks arise at the perimeter holes when there is a long time delay between adjacent holes. This led to the theoretical development of a new initiation method with ultra short delays (1,5 ms) f or controlled blasting, called ""Cutblasting"".Full-scale tests have been done at LKAB in Malmberget in hard intense jointed magnetite ore. Four different types of perimeter charges have been tested, namely: tube charges, ANFO mixed with plastic beads, detonating cord and linear shaped charges. Three types of initiation of the perimeter holes have been used, conventional (half-second delay detonators), instantaneous and ultra short ""cutblasting initiation"" (1,5 ms delay). The change in rock strength before and after blasting has been studied with bore hole periscope, vibration measurement and ocular observation of the rock surfaces.Thefull-scale tests showed that ""cutblasting"" with detonating cord in the perimeter holes gave the smallest damage to the surrounding rock. A combination of cutblasting initiation and tube charges are anticipated to give an even better result. A new method of controlled blasting using linear-shaped charges has also been tested, however, this charge type needs further development.The full- scale test also showed that the damage which can be seen on the rock surf ace is about the same for different controlled blasting methods but the not-visual-damage zone varies as much as from 0,1 to 0,7 m.A new classification system for controlled blasting regarding the damage to the surrounding rock has been devised."

The presence of natural underground cavities is normally a characteristic of iron ore deposits, specifically in tropical deposits. Brazil and the United States are the only countries that have a legislation to protect these structures, but in Brazil this legislation is very specific for the existing cavities in the federal territory. These cavities are classified by their level of relevance as high, medium, and low. From this perspective, its preservation becomes mandatory, especially, for those of high relevance in order to protect the species (flora and fauna) that live in them. When these structures are within the production phases, it becomes a challenge to exploit these reserves with the use of commercial explosives, since these structures condition and may restrict the use and amount of explosive charge. This paper presents the methodology of controlled blasting associated with predictability via realistic simulation in production polygons, applied in a Brazilian iron ore mine where there is a presence of high relevance natural cavities with restrictions in relation to the limits of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV), which is product of detonation.

In underground construction and mining work, situations occasionally occur where hard rock or concrete must be excavated at locations near critical structures or utilities. Fearing damage from blasting, contractors and engineers often explore the viability of using mechanical methods or expansive concrete to facilitate the excavation work. However, for moderate to large excavations, the prolonged duration and high cost of using these methods is often impractical. In these situations, under the right conditions, controlled blasting and blast-management methods can be used to speedup the work and lessen costs. The process of determining whether or not blasting is practical is often complex, particularly when risks are high. In this paper, general methods of conducting blasting risk evaluations and outlined and considerations for blast design and risk management are reviewed. This paper also includes three blasting case histories demonstrating how these techniques were used at recent projects. In the first case, a cautious blasting program was developed to facilitate the removal of concrete and rock within a large section of an active mineshaft. The second case involved critical blasting to excavate a dry lake-tap connection between a tunnel and a shaft at the Southern Nevada Water Intake No. 2 project in Henderson, Nevada. The third case history describes how novel blasting methods were used to carefully drop a 2,721,500-kg (6,000,000-lb) concrete caisson into a1.2-m (4-ft) rock socket at the Detroit Outfall No. 2 project in Detroit, MI.

Eveleth Taconite Co. was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi Range. Its Thunderbird mine is located mid-way between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minn. The program for blasting restraints here is unique not only on the Mesabi Range but possibly in the world. The ore is a hard siliceous taconite. Its structure varies from bedded to massive with prominent vertical jointing. The jointing of the top or outcrop of the orebody is a challenge for the blasting practices as it is the source of an estimated 75% of the secondary breakage.
