A RATHER detailed description of the entire plant and leaching process was given in a paper recently presented to the Institute,1 so this paper will cover briefly only the crushing practice of the New Cornelia Copper Co. for the year, 1918. The ore, which is mined by steam shovels and loaded in side-dump cars, passes through two crushing plants. These crushing plants were constructed to crush the ore required by a leaching plant of 5000 tons daily, capacity, during a crushing period of 16 hours. The primary plant reduces to less than 3 in. (76 mm.) and the secondary plant, to ¼ in. (6.35 mm.), which is sufficiently fine for satisfactory percolation of solution through the ore in the leaching tanks, and to give good extraction. The ore is then conveyed to the leaching tanks by a system of 28-in.. (71-cm.) belt conveyors. On the way to the leaching tanks, it passes through an automatic sampling plant, where a 1-per cent. sample is taken. From the primary crushing plant, the ore is conveyed by two 36-in. (91-cm.) belt conveyors to a 10,000-ton steel storage bin, with a reinforced-concrete flat bottom. The ore discharges from the bottom of this bin onto four 20-in. belt conveyors, which deliver it to the four units of crushers in the secondary crushing plant. There is no storage bin between the mine and the primary crushing plant. The ore breaks very coarse, is very hard, and contains a great many boulders, some as large as 4 ½ by 4 1/2 by 10 ft. (1.3 by 1.3 by 3 m.). Jams form in the bowl of the coarse crusher in the primary crushing plant, as a consequence, and are freed by means of an immense steel hook operated from a 40-ton electric traveling crane.

DURING the last few years, one of the great problems in the milling of all ores has been that of crushing. This subject involves not merely the cost of the operation, but also the selection of the proper degree and character of crushing to yield the best metallurgical results on the given ore. Considering the diversity of machinery, one is led to wonder at the variety of crushing methods employed, even when realizing that metallurgy demands varying products. In an attempt to investigate the relative crushing resistances of a number of ores now being milled in this country and Alaska, the management of the Portland mills requested samples of average mill-run of ore from various companies. The request met with a ready response, indicating the desire of all operators to gain information on the subject. The difficulties involved in this investigation were numerous, lack of time for outside problems during this strenuous period being a serious one. Also, we were unable, in the time, to obtain a correct 150-mesh . screen; in the screen analyses tabulated and plotted herewith, the 150 mesh screen was used merely to protect the 200-mesh screen, not to ascertain points on the curves.

(written discussion*).-The method adopted by Mr. Lennox is a very interesting test of the practical application of Mr. Gates' crushing-surface diagram to a greet variety of gold and copper ores. His method of dealing with the material below 200-mesh is also a distinct contribution to the subject, although, as he suggests, it seems likely that some microscopic measurement of this material may be advisable before the mesh reciprocals of its group particles can be dealt with as accurately as can those coarser than 200-mesh. In examining the general results shown in Table 3, it is somewhat puzzling to perceive why Calumet &, Hecla jig tails should show a crushing resistance 3 - times greater than that of the ore from the Ray Consolidated copper mine. COMPRESSION TESTS THE standard method of determining the crushing resistance of rocks consists of crushing prepared shapes under slow compression, and expressing the ultimate crushing resistance at the load causing failure in pounds per square inch of crossectional area perpendicular to the crushing force, with the height approximately equal to the diameter. One-inch cubes or cylindrical drill cores are commonly used. Cubes and drill cores are cut by a high-speed steel disk with diamond dust embedded in the edges, and running under a water spray. Such a saw will cut one square inch or more of hard stone per minute. An oiled, spherical, swivel compression block of small diameter should be used to equalize the pressure. Each sample is crushed between sheets of cardboard or blotting paper extending about one-half inch beyond the edges of the stone. A cloth is wrapped around it to prevent dangerous explosive shattering. It is probably preferable to place the swivel block below the specimen, with either a rigid head or another swivel block above. Whatever the arrangement, the conditions should be selected that will develop the maximum crushing strength of the specimen, even though its top and bottom planes may not be precisely parallel. The cardboard pads may be dispensed with if the ends of the specimens are polished smooth. The use of lead pads was discontinued because of the observed tendency to split the material. The samples are weighed and measured before breaking, and the density is calculated. Cubes that contain bedding planes or veinlets are usually placed with these vertical and parallel to the crushing force, in order to develop the maximum resistance possible. A number of compression tests were made on Canadian ores, by Forrest Nagler, of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., and are listed alphabetically in Table 1. These tests were made on one inch cubes or on diamond-drill cores approximately one inch in diameter and one inch long. The drill cores represent virgin rock, while the cubes may have been previously weakened by explosives. Compression tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers Milwaukee Laboratory on a number of ores and other materials. These are listed alphabetically in Table 2. In test No. 1339, on limestone from the Hanna Coal Co., comparison was made between 2 by 2-in. diamond-drill core segments and one-inch cubes cut from the cores in the same strata. Results for the cylinders are tabulated directly below those for the cubes. The bedding planes were normal to the compressive force in breaking the cylinders and parallel in breaking the cubes, which accounts for the lower strength obtained from the cylinders. The percentage of net linear compression at the ultimate pressure was measured in test No. 1055 for Fontana TVA quartzite as 0.30 for cube A, and 0.37 for cube D.

The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

THE ores of the Tonopah, district are hard, compact and' highly siliceous. They contain from .1 to 2, per cent. of sulfide material, of which argentite is the valuable mineral; occasionally pyrargyrite is found in the richer ore. The sulfide is, chiefly pyrite with small amounts of chalcopyrite,. and sometimes sphalerite. The ore also contains a small amount of gold-about 1 per cent. by weight of the silver present. The major gangue constituent is quartz but frequently considerable rhodonite-called by the miners pink manganese-is present. For primary crushing, jaw and gyratory crushers are used. These crushers are of such capacity that, in most cases, one 8-hr. shift will supply the mill for 24 hr. The Extension Co., at the Victor ore house, passes the ore through a 13 by. 24-in. Blake type McFarland crusher set at 13 in., and at the No. 29 re house, a 14 by 24-in. Blake type Traylor crusher is used. The ore is thus crushed to stamping size in one reduction. The capacity of each crusher is about 40 tons per hr.; the power consumption is 0.6 kw. per ton.

The percentage of leached zinc in massive zinc oxide ores (11.7% Zn, >2 mm) is up to 73.3 % in 120 days. Alternatively, crushed to -0.154 mm, mixed with cement 5% (wt), pelletized and solidified. The diameters of the pellets obtained are between 5 mm to 8 mm. When the pellet solidification periods are 3 days, 10 days and 45 days respectively, the alkaline leaching rates of zinc in the pellets are up to 95.8%, 89.1% and 76.4% respectively. Decreasing the solidification time can re-duce reaction time, increase dissolution of zinc in pellets and lower the effect of initial zinc concentration on leaching rate. The experiment results show that the minimum solidification time is three days, and the kinetic study indicates that alkaline leaching of the low grade zinc oxide pellets is controlled by the diffusion of the leach liquor through the gangue layer in the whole leach process, and the apparent rate constants are 3.33×10-2 day-1, 9.18×10-3 day-1, 5.82×10-3 day-1 respectively.

THE recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-mill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice was the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening oil the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp ; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as compared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete. It is the universal practice to use rolls where a relatively small tonnage is to be crushed coarse, as, for example, when coarse concentration is included in the plan of treatment. Power, attendance, repairs, and first-cost are smaller for the rolls, under such circumstances, than for stamps; and it is becoming daily more apparent that, with no concentration to provide for, the use of rolls and tube-mills, without the complication of trommels and elevators required by concentration, is rapidly gaining favor in the eyes of the leading designers. The next step was the use of the rapid-running Chilean mill between the gravity-stamps and the tube-mill, which again narrowed the field of operation of the gravity-stamp while radically widening its screen-aperture. Such a combination of stamps and Chilean mill offers advantages when fine concentration is necessary, since the reduction in the Chilean mill call be adjusted easily and governed by varying the screen-mesh. UP to a certain limit, the increase of pressure on the diamond-drill increases the rate of progress in drilling. That limit is set by the resistance of the diamonds to compression; and beyond it, the destruction of the stones will involve an. economic loss, both in time and in money. It is, therefore, important to all diamond-drillers to know what is the resistance mentioned. In Europe, operators usually follow an empirical rule, which directs the maintenance of a pressure, on the area-of the bottom of the drilling-tool, of 12 kg. per sq. 4m. For the tools in ordinary use, this is equivalent to 1 kg. per sq. mm. of the diamonds set in the tool So far as I know, American drillers are using pressures as high as 50 to 60 kg. per sq. cm. of the total area of the drill, and the consumption of diamonds (on Denny's authority, 0.2 carats per meter bored) is greater in America than in Europe. But the reason for this difference may be the comparatively larger size of the diamonds commonly used by American drillers. With the assistance of my friend, the late S. Woisslaw, who was the pioneer of diamond-drilling in Russia, I selected from his stock a number of black diamonds, which I subjected in my laboratory to compression-tests. To prepare regular cubes for such tests, as is generally done with other stones, would have been not only costly, but, what is more important, practically useless. I therefore determined, in order to assimilate as nearly as possible the conditions of actual use, to place each sample between a hard plate (corresponding to the rock) and a softer plate (corresponding to the bottom of the tool), into which it would be pressed during the test.

Single station group velocities of fundamental made Rayleigh waves over the period range 15-100 s are carguted for five provincial profiles of the West Pacific. Based on recordings of earthquakes around the West Pacific by the W~ (World Wide Standard Seismic Network) stations AFI (Afianalu), HNR (Honiara), WEL (Wellington), PAR (Raratonga) and RAB (Rabaul). The inversion of the derived dispersion curves for average shear velocity-depth structure of the crust, LID and LVL shows that (i) the over-all structure beneath the profile 'westernSamoa-Micronesia-Mariana' is in between that of regions 3 and 4 of Pacific Ocean (Yu and Mitchell, 1979), except that the velocity is slightly lower, (ii) the uppermost mantle beneath the 'Vitiaz Trench' profile between AFI and HNR is similar to that of region 2 of the Pacific - in other words, thin LID and thick LVL; (iii) the structure beneath the ' Ibnga-Keradec Ridge' profile has a thick crust with thick sediments, and LID-LVL velocity and thickness are similar to region 3 of the Pacific; (iv) beneath the profiles ' Tonga/ Kermadec Trench events-RAR station' the structure is intermediate between regions 3 and 4 of the Pacific Crean; (v) from decomposition of the 'Solomon-meriana' profile, the structure beneath the Cntong Java Plateau has a thick crust with thick sediments and the uppermost mantle is similar to that of region 3 of the Pacific clean.

More than 1000 Ian of seismic reflection data correlated to ten exploration wells along with geological, gravity and magnetic data are used to construct the subsurface structure, in particular the crystalline basement, along a corridor approximately 100 Ian wide that traverses central Iraq in SE-NW direction for a distance of about 500 km from Baghdad in the central part of Iraq to Dohuk near the Turkish border. This transect is one of few such transects that represents the Iraqi contribution to the Global Geoscience Transects (GGT) project. The transect crosses two out of three major tectonic elements of Iraq: the unfolded zone and the folded zone.

As part of an Australian Research Council project with Newmont and Newcrest mining companies studying the influence of clay minerals on rheology, hydrodynamics and flotation response, the cryo-SEM technique has been used to capture and image the clay (low crystallinity kaolinite Q38) aggregate structures in the flotation pulp immediately after collector and before frother addition. Samples were also collected from the earliest froth phase and the froth overflow corresponding to early and later concentrates. In this technique, a copper tube is filled with the sample during operation of the cell. The tube is immediately plunged into liquid nitrogen vitrifying the water phase before it can crystallise as ice thereby retaining the structures without volume or other physical change. After sublimation of the vitrified water surface, the aggregate structures are revealed and can be compared between pulp and froth phases from clays in different feeds and flotation conditions. The images from both low-clay ore and ore with clay content reveal various levels of aggregation as predominantly edge-edge connected aggregates similar to those found in our previous studies of high-clay tailings. For the samples from the ore with clay content, more extensive edge-edge clay strings are found in the early froth phase as compared to exiting froth overflow and the pulp phase with short edge-edge connected strings. It is suggested that the strings of clay particles result from edge-edge aggregation in the Plateau borders of the bubbles before breakage during sampling and the more extensive edge-edge aggregation in early froth phase is induced by crowding in the bubble borders. The clay strings collected into the overflow concentrate are almost all broken up compared with the Froth before drop-back. The implications for entrainment and entrapment mechanisms of gangue capture in froth will be discussed.

Throughout the mining industry, pneumoconiosis is one of the most severe occupational health problems being faced. The goal of completely eliminating pneumoconiosis as an occupational health hazard was underscored by the Federal Government with its enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969). Under this law, permissible dust level standards will be placed at 2 mg/m3 in mine atmospheres by December 30, 1972. The mining industry is thus faced with the tremendous technical challenge of achieving this level. Two basic questions can be raised with regard to this legislation. First, does a maximum dust concentration of 2 mg/m3 prevent the occurrence of pneumoconiosis? Secondly, can this dust standard be achieved using presently available methods and equipment? A precise answer to the first question has not yet been developed by the medical profession. Studies are continuing on the origin, prevention, and therapy of pneumoconiosis, and permissible dust levels could become even lower as medical evidence accumulates. Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F) (MSHA 2008 [1]). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by > 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures (Bissert et al. 2017 [2]). In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy

INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.

Enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969) has placed new responsibilities on the mining industry. The new law, aimed at eventually solving the problem of pneumoconiosis, sets new respirable dust standards at 2 mg per cu m. Techniques employed to date have been shown to lack total effectiveness in meeting the prescribed standards. Since it is possible that even the new standards will eventually have to be lowered to effectively attack the medical problem, the need for new and more reliable methods of assuring clean respirable air will intensity. This paper presents, in a preliminary manner, both the present technical capability and growth potential of cryogenic technology for supplying miners with clean breathing air. Work with two sizes of prototype supplied-air (cryogenic-liquid) respiratiors in Union Carbide's Fawn Coal mine, will be described. Other potentially fabricable systems will be discussed and a preliminary assessment made of the potential cost of introducing cryogenic air breathing systems in coal mine service.

"BACKGROUND The design, development, fabrication, and test of a cryogenic supply for a refuge alternative is part of a larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Kennedy Space Center, FL to create cryogenically based life support equipment responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2008. This work is done by a joint contractor/NASA team. In particular, the Cryogenic Refuge Alternative Supply System (CryoRASS) serves to provide a respirable air source to miners confined for 96 hours in a mine refuge alternative. This system stores liquid air in a zero-loss cryogenic reservoir (Dewar) until an emergency requires use. The system does not require electric power when in use by miners. Because of the very cold nature of the liquid air, considerable heat stress relief and reduction of humidity is provided in addition to the required replenishment of oxygen. Moderate dilution of CO2 also occurs.INTRODUCTION The design of this new cryogenic refuge alternative supply system (CryoRASS) uses NASA/Kennedy Space Center technology as a development baseline. The design stores cryogenic (liquid) air that is warmed in an air handler box and the resulting gaseous air is introduced to the chamber that not only causes air circulation, but relies upon environmental and human heat to expand the liquid air to a gaseous state. Therefore, the primary benefits of the liquid air source, besides atmosphere maintenance (oxygen), is refuge cooling and dehumidification. This results in reduction of human heat stress and this occurs without the need for electrical power in the refuge chamber. This reduction is a major factor in ""apparent heat"" and the human perception of comfort. Another benefit with introduction of ""air"" vs only ""oxygen"" is the dilution of carbon dioxide. The volume of new air will displace existing refuge air and this air laden with humidity/CO2/low O2 passes out of the refuge relief valves. These RVs should be strategically placed to vent stagnant air preferentially. An initial system test was conducted in our Florida facility in a production 10-person hard chamber for 96 hours. Last year (2014) the system was tested with a 23 person inflatable refuge alternative in Bruceton. For this test, the CryoRASS air handler was redesigned to offer superior characteristics when installed in a Built-in-Place refuge alternative. This report describes the results of the modified system being tested in the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine while attached to a 30 person refuge for 96 (+/-) hours."

"Considering the traumatic events of Canadian mining taxation of the 1970s, one wonders at the sanity of anybody who tries to predict what the 1980s might hold for the tax structure of the mining industry. Yet, the author agreed to tackle this task when called upon to do so at the annual meeting of the Quebec Metal Mining Association in June. The text of this ""daring"" speech follows.IntroductionI have been asked to play the part of the oracle at Delphi, and to predict what the 1980s might hold for the Canadian mining industry in terms of taxation. To appreciate the challenge of this difficult assignment, try to imagine someone in my position back in 1972 attempting to forecast the balance of the 1970s. I daresay that ten years ago nobody could possibly have conceived of the devastating and casualty-ridden rollercoaster ride that mining taxation actually took in the 70s. Nevertheless, I shall examine the entrails and try to shed some light on what might happen during the balance of this decade as far as mineral taxation is concerned.If one were to retreat deep into history, one would find that taxation generally served one purpose-namely, to raise revenues for the government. More recently, an important second function has emerged: taxation is increasingly being used as a fiscal tool-a tool intended to mould and shape future events in order to accomplish certain economic, social and political objectives. It is these two main forces-the need (or desire) for revenues and the perceived convenience of using taxation as a fiscal tool-which will continue to shape the tax structure of the future.In our assessment of where taxation of the mining industry may be headed, we should be able to learn something by looking at where we have been."
