Zinc, in its wrought form, is produced commercially in rolled strip, sheet, wire, rod and tubing. Wire has been made periodically, but due to the fact that slight drafts are necessary, the cost of production is greater than for the more common non-ferrous metals which are made into wire. Notwithstanding the cost, zinc wire has certain special uses for which it is particularly adaptable. Rod has been made both by rolling and extrusion; the product, however, has not indicated great commercial value. Tubing has been made from strip from time to time by forming a strip around a mandrel and either electrically or gas-welding a longitudinal joint. Recently a tube manufacturer has succeeded in making a fair quantity of this material. Its commercial adaptability is still to be dctcrmined but anyone who desires it can obtain quantities of the smaller sizes. Inasmuch as strip and sheet are commercially the most important, this paper will be devoted to these products. In the broader sense, zinc is not alloyed. That is, there are no combinations comparable to the various copper, aluminum and nickel alloys. It has been recognized for some time that the lead and cadmium occurring with commercial zinc have some effect on its properties and such alloys as may be said to exist are those made from zincs containing varying amounts of lead and cadmium with a relatively low iron content. The foreign rolled zinc will analyze higher in lead than the domestic grades. A representative foreign analysis will run 1.1 per cent. lead, 0.07 per cent. cadmium and 0.02 per cent. iron. The American grades vary from zinc approximating high grade and analyzing 0.08 per cent, lead, 0.002 per cent. cadmium and 0.015 per cent. iron, to the lower grades in which the lead will vary from 0.3 to 1.0 per cent., cadmium from 0.10 to 0.5 per cent. and the iron in the neighborhood of 0.02 percent. The plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,' which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account. 2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94" removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson's opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

I. INTRODUCTION. THIS cavern was discovered Oct. 22, 1904, by Mr. Charles H. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3, 1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria,, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. II. LOCATION. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier House, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier House. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the-object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. Chalcocite concentrate obtained by magnetic separation and flotation of Bessemer matte is processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK reactor into semi-blister copper. The semi-blister is then converted into blister copper in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) by oxidation of iron, nickel and sulphur. High melting point NiO and Fe30 4 are formed inside the MPV s, which together with Cu20 and smaller amount of fayalite are the major constituents of the solid mush. The accumulation of solid mush and buildup requires periodic MPV cleaning by adding reductant and copper-nickel matte, a unique process called "washout". Various reductants and their combinations, such as pig-iron, 15%Si Ferro-silicon and 50%Si Ferro-silicon, have been used for the reduction of solid mush and buildup. The possibilities of using calcium carbide as a reductant and slagging flux were examined experimentally at the crucible scale. The rate of reduction of MPV buildup was determined by continuous measurement of CO and C02 contents in the offgas and the flowrate of argon carrier gas. The rate of the buildup reduction with calcium carbide was approximately five times faster than the rate of reduction with coke. Additionally, the formation of CaO results in the melting of reduced buildup and formation of a slag at 1300°C and higher temperatures. It was found that simultaneous silica addition enhanced the melting and slag formation. The results showed the strong dependence of the reduction rate on temperature. Activation energy is approximately 225 kJ/mol. Expected benefits of using calcium carbide are related to cost saving on reductant, significant acceleration of solid mush reduction, and reduced amount iron input from reductant.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, bulk nickel and copper concentrate is processed in two Inca flash furnaces and Peirce Smith converters to produce Bessemer matte containing 0.6%Fe. After slow cooling and Matte Separation, Bessemer matte is converted into three main products using magnetic separation and flotation technology: (1) a nickel containing chalcocite concentrate (MK); (2) two types of copper containing nickel sulfide (ME and MR); (3) metallics (MYN). MK is further processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK Reactor to produce semi-blister copper containing ~4%Ni and ~3±1 %S. The semi-blister copper is then purified in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) to produce blister copper by reducing Ni, Fe and S content through oxidation. High melting point NiO is formed inside the MPVs. The accumulation of solid NiO and other oxides requires periodic cleaning by adding reductant and furnace matte, a unique process called "washout" at Inca. For many years, the reductant used for the "washout" process has been 15%Si Ferro-silicon. With increasing cost and limited suppliers for 15%FeSi, alternative reductants were pursued. This paper summarizes the development and commercialization of new alternative reductants for MPV "washout".

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. "Mineral texture is a critical factor which controls ore variability and is an important attribute in geometallurgy. In relation to downstream processes, it affects the fracture pattern during breakage, where rock strength is inherently a function of mineral texture. Because of the subjective nature of mineral texture, it has not been easy to quantify, especially in the context of a measurement suitable for use in geometallurgical programmes. The aim of this paper is to present the first steps in developing a 3D mineral texture quantification method for drill core and to assess its sensitivity to differences in rock strength using a case study. The methodology includes classifying the textural information using the 3D grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled method. Rock strength tests were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The case study investigates a heterogeneous polymetallic sulphide deposit and a homogeneous shale subdivided into three ’mineral textural types’. The variability is largely captured by the GLCM matrices, and preliminary trends can be observed where the shale is finer grained and has a higher yield strength in comparison with the coarser grained polymetallic sulphide ore. IntroductionModern mining requires the exploitation of lower grade and more complex, heterogeneous orebodies to address the growing industry demands. Historically, processing plants were designed and built based on average ore characteristics and therefore are relatively inflexible when facing the full spectrum of ore variability in heterogeneous orebodies (Lamberg, 2011; Lotter, 2011; Schouwstra et al., 2013). The practice of geometallurgy represents an opportunity to manage ore variability in the mining industry (Powell 2013; Baum, 2014; Yildirim et al., 2014; Nguyen, 2013). It focuses on quantifying the relationships between ore characteristics and their downstream mining and processing responses, often starting with small-scale laboratory testing. The purpose of geometallurgy is linked to maximizing the net present value (NPV) of an orebody by minimizing technical and operational risk – where ‘ore variability’ is considered one of the most significant technical risks."

But a closer examination of the project showed a number of “fine print” details: •High altitude location (with resulting cold weather and low humidity conditions). •Long conveyor length. •Troublesome material (very sticky and capable of hardening like concrete). •Limited water. This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

Education and Training for the minerals industry has been identified as one of the key priorities by the AusIMM and many closely related groups. The AusIMM Education Taskforce has been engaged, through a visioning exercise, in evaluating what minerals education and training should look like by 2025. A common recurring theme is that for minerals education and training to be efficient and effective into the future, it needs to be comprehensive and inclusive. Some previous attempts to achieve efficiency and effectiveness have had limited success, mainly due to approaching the issues involved from a narrow, singular perspective. This paper outlines that the achievement of the desired outcome may require an approach that parallels the same techniques that are used for multi-dimensional mine planning, treating tertiary minerals education and training in a similar way to the planning involved for a complex orebody. Just as efficient and effective mine planning requires engagement and understanding of many factors, so too does engagement with tertiary minerals education and training. The major factors that need to be considered are outlined in the paper, including: levels of tertiary education and training; Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Levels 1 to 13: systems of minerals education and training, such as higher education, (mainly universities), industry/professional associations and licencing requirements, vocational education, (mainly TAFE) and workplace programs; types of minerals or mining methods involved; volume of delivery; stage in the flow sheet, (geology, mining, beneficiation, extraction, refining). For comprehensive mine planning there is the need to develop links or roadways and openings between different levels of a mine. Similarly, to achieve a comprehensive tertiary minerals education and training model, there is a need to develop pathways, recognition and credit transfer between the various levels and components of minerals tertiary education and training.

"Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. Designing and constructing OxianaÆs Sepon gold and copper operations in one of the most remote areas in Laos has been a great achievement; one which was recognised by the engineering industryÆs highest accolade û the Australian Engineering Excellence Award in 2005. The developing nation of Laos has no previous mining or heavy industrial experience, but the support of the Lao Government and a remarkable Lao workforce has enabled the project to be developed and operate as well as it would anywhere else in the world.When making a decision to invest offshore, several geophysical and jurisdictional criteria need to be considered. Laos offers unparalleled prospectivity, a central location with growing infrastructure, a ready workforce and a developing but supportive regulatory regime. In addition, the Sepon copper project has exceptional characteristics, including its high grades, location near the surface, leachable qualities, access to hydropower and the ability to produce cathodes on site. These attributes and its location in the centre of a region hungry for resources contributes to the projectÆs excellent economics.

"The separation of valuable and gangue minerals according to their surface hydrophobicity in a froth flotation tank occurs in both its pulp and froth phases. In the pulp phase, hydrophobic particles must be brought into contact with rising bubbles introduced at or near the bottom of the tank. In a mechanical froth flotation tank, this is primarily achieved through the agitation of the pulp by an impeller or by a rotor-stator system. However, the turbulent and mixing effects of such an impeller or rotor-stator system, necessary to promote bubble-particle interactions in the pulp, are not confined to the pulp zone, but are transmitted into the froth zone at the pulp-froth interface. This impeller-induced turbulence at the pulp-froth interface is compounded by the impulse of buoyant bubbles entering the base of the froth phase, reducing the stability, and thus separation performance, of the resulting froth. Hence, turbulence improves separation performance if it occurs deep in the pulp phase, but diminishes it if it occurs close to the pulp-froth interface. For this work, a performance-enhancing pulp phase insert was designed to isolate the impeller-induced turbulence from the pulp-froth interface in a laboratory-scale, continuously-operated froth flotation tank. The result was a shifted grade-recovery curve that allows the insert to be designed to maximize the recovery from the system without sacrificing the grade of the concentrate, or vice versa, along a spectrum of improved performance. This paper will present the insert design and development process that resulted in this improved grade-recovery curve, as well as a set of heuristics that could be used to design a similar insert for pilotand industrial-scale validation and deployment.INTRODUCTIONAn almost ubiquitous design feature of commercial flotation tanks is the enclosure of the impeller to create a concentrated turbulent zone (Mavros, 1992). These turbulent zone enclosures are varied-- from the rotor-stator design of, for instance, Outotec cells, to the air disperser design of Wemco cells-- but all share the same rationale: that turbulence is desirable to promote bubble-particle interactions (Ralston, 1999), and to produce smaller bubbles (Wills, 2006), but also undesirable because it promotes the detachment of valuable mineral particles from bubbles, and exacerbates entrainment-inducing mixing at the pulp-froth interface (Jameson, 2010)."

One of the primary responsibilities of the International Seabed Authority?s Secretariat (the Secretariat) is to assess the quantities of metals present in seabed polymetallic nodules in the International Seabed Area under the Authority?s jurisdiction. To carry out this responsibility, the Secretariat periodically undertakes an assessment of the reserved areas in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern Pacific (CCZ) using the data submitted by the registered Contractors and maintained in the Authority?s POLYDAT database. The results of its most recent assessment demonstrated that the information submitted by the Contractors, though satisfactory for some purposes, does not permit the in situ quantities of metals in these areas to be estimated with a degree of confidence that is comparable to many land-based mineral resource estimates. Our strategy is to divide the work into two distinct but closely related efforts; one to draft a Prospector?s Guide that provides a narrative description of the key geological and oceanographic data that may be related to deposit abundance and metal content, and another that we call the Geological Model, that summarizes and documents the quantitative resource assessments accomplished in the project.

The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. Therefore, the time of draining at any point, x, is given by: [ ] where t' is the time over which the mine has been expanded. "*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."
