Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

A nonlinear dynamic model for a flotation cell is developed, using a number of simplifying assumptions, the most important of which is that of essentially complete liberation in the feed material. Using this model, a complete dynamic model for a flotation circuit is developed and calibrated against steady- state process data. The dynamic response of the circuit to disturbances in input feed rate and composition is simulated, as is the response of a linearized and simplified model on which control design might be more easily based. Preliminary results indicate the practicability of the modeling technique. However, difficulties in matching steady-state operating conditions in one process stream, and the apparent importance of recycle streams as indicators of process operation, indicate that inclusion of at least one species of middling particle in the model should be considered.

A true emergency communications system would function regardless of a mine’s physical state. Through-the-earth (TTE) wireless communication technology only requires the use of a single transmitter and a single receiver to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata. With this capability, TTE systems have the potential to serve as a true emergency communications platform."

Resumen ¦ Un sistema de comunicaciones “a través del suelo” (TTE) comercial y disponible fue evaluado en una mina de carbón subterránea en la zona Este del Estado de Kentucky. Este estudio de campo fue realizado como parte de una evaluación multisitio mayor de sistemas TTE disponibles. La mina detallada en este estudio se encontraba paralizada al momento de la evaluación, lo que proporcionó la representación más cercana a la realidad del medio ambiente en una mina luego de una operación de cierre. Para este estudio se probaron las comunicaciones superficie a subterráneo y subterráneo a superficie. El despliegue estándar del sistema TTE usando los procedimientos recomendados por el fabricante logró obtener comunicaciones claras y nítidas entre el socavón y la superficie. Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

"A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This field study was conducted as part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems to determine their operational sensitivity. Field testing is being performed along with simulation techniques developed for geophysical surveys. The results of the field test will additionally be used to determine the applicability of these simulation techniques to TTE communications. The mine detailed in this paper was idled at the time of the study, which provided the nearest practical representation of a post-event mine shutdown. For this study, the three following communication modes were tested: surface-to-underground, underground-to-surface and surface-to-surface. Standard deployments of the TTE system using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations. Other arrangements of the units yielded intriguing results, some of which were predicted by computer simulations, others were unexpected. Future experimentation is planned to further evaluate the observed phenomena. Current communication technology is reliant on physical infrastructure, such as antennas, cables, and repeaters, located throughout the mine. Such systems are easily disabled during a mine event because of their vulnerability to physical damage. A true emergency communications system would have the ability to function regardless of a mine’s physical state. Through-the-Earth (TTE) wireless communications technology has the potential to provide such a tool. Wireless TTE communications are exceptionally challenging because electromagnetic (EM), or radio, signals are subject to drastic attenuation as they travel through solid strata. In addition to attenuation, EM wave propagation is directly affected by the physical and petrographic characteristics, mineral compositions, metamorphic properties, and the degree of water infiltrations in the strata [1-5]. These strata characteristics are unique to each mine thus making the design of an effective, universally deployable, and reliable TTE communications system very difficult. At present, TTE technology is in the preliminary stages of practical deployment with only a few permissible TTE systems commercially available."

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

Backfill in the form of mine waste tailings has inherent problems associated with attaining adequate strengths upon placement. Fines are usually removed to ensure adequate drainage, which lowers the cohesive strength of the fill, leaving the fines to be placed in a tailings dam. Electro-drainage and electro-chemical grouting is examined to investigate its effects on densification and shear strength within a silty clay tailing having low permeability and shear strength. Two separate grouting mechanisms are observed for the iron and silica grouts used. Electroosmosis is associated with iron grout that deposits within the tailing matrix under a converging pH gradient, and increases the permeability of the tailing. This process initiates cation exchange and causes cementing of the granular contact points between the clays. Electro-phoresis causes sodium silicate solution to deposit silica grout in the voids of the tailings. The resultant effect of these mechanisms results in an increase in cohesion, leaving the void ratio of the iron grouted tailings as it was but significantly reducing the void ratio of the silica grouted tailings.

This Technical Note was presented as a poster at the Western Cape Mineral Processing Symposium held in August 2001 The cleaning of fine coal (-1000 µm) in today?s coal preparation plants is an economically important factor. Coals with high ash contents are, in general, commercially undesirable. Current well-known techniques for treating fine coal include froth flotation and spirals. The primary critical factor with regards to spirals is the efficiency of the process whereas that of flotation, is the cost of there agents used. Research into enhanced gravity separation techniques has resulted in several commercially available enhanced gravity separators. This project was based on a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of one such separator, to effectively treat fine (-500 µm) coal. Experimental variables included particle size and speed of rotation of the said instrument. The performance of the separator was compared to the results obtained from liquid density separations done for the two coal fractions evaluated. From the results obtained in this preliminary study it appears that the piece of equipment investigated does not measure up to expectations. Recommendations for further investigation include the evaluation of the instrument on other South African coals to obtain conclusive results.

The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

This paper discusses the possible use of petrological data and proximate analyses in the prediction of cutting forces for coal. It is restricted to the development of univariate predictors based on data from thirteen collieries in five major Transvaal and Orange Free State coalfields and three coal provinces. The aim of the work was the identification and development of the best predictors of mean peak cutting force and Hardgrove grindability index from among the independent variables evaluated. The data, which were obtained by use of the penetrometer developed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, were processed according to the SPSS computer package. The analysis revealed reasonable correlations between the Hardgrove grindability index and (1) the volatiles and vitrinite content in the Vereeniging-Sasolburg and South Rand Coalfields, (2) the contents of vitrinite, vitrinite plus exinite, and minerals plus inertinite in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfield.

"Since the late 1990s, increased prevalence of severe lung disease among US coal miners has been observed, particularly in central Appalachia where thin-seam mining is prevalent. While respirable silica exposures have been implicated in many cases, the available dust monitoring data from mines shows no explanatory trends. One possible factor could be differences in the relative toxicity of silica particles based on their surface condition. Previous research has indicated that particles with occluded surfaces (e.g., by a thin layer of clay) may be less toxic than those with non-occluded surfaces. However, this dust characteristic has not been investigated before now in central Appalachian mines. In the present study, 18 respirable dust samples from seven central Appalachian mines and two northern Appalachian mines were analyzed to assess the relative occurrence of surface-occluded silica. Results showed that the dust from central Appalachian mines actually had higher fractions of occluded silica, which may be due to extraction of large amounts of rock strata along with the coal. However, the central Appalachian mines also more silica particles overall (i.e., occluded + non-occluded) in terms of total number percentage of respirable particles.INTRODUCTIONResurgence of occupational lung disease among US coal miners, especially in the central Appalachian region, has been observed since the late 1990’s (Gibson, 2016; Zosky et al., 2016; Suarthana et al., 2011; Gamble et al., 2011; Antao et al., 2005; Attfield & Sexias, 1995). In addition to increased prevalence of simple Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”), the prevalence of severe and rapidly progressive disease has risen dramatically (Almberg et al., 2018; Blackley et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2016, 2014; Graber et al., 2017; Cohen et al., 2016). While exposures to respirable silica have long been known to cause or play a role in diseases such as silicosis or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is conventionally considered as the most advanced form of CWP, it is unclear whether silica is the only culprit in the recent outbreak of severe disease. Indeed, as disease rates have risen, both total respirable dust and silica concentrations generally appear to have declined since the late 1980s, based on regulatory monitoring data in the most affected mining districts (i.e., MSHA coal Districts 4, 5 and 12, which cover central WV, eastern KY and southwestern VA, and southern WV, respectively) (Figure 1). Of course, the latency of disease can vary and may be or more 10 years, but many of the most recent cases are likely to have resulted from exposures that occurred since the late 1980s."

In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. One of the more challenging aspects of the unfolding age of space travel centers about the opportunity for man to use the natural resources of other worlds. The first of the extraterrestrial worlds to be exploited will be the moon. After only a scant few thousand years of scratching the earth's crust, man will embark upon a venture that for centuries has excited the imagination of many (while staggering that of most) and may become a reality within the next decade. There has never been a time when so much money and effort will have been expended to exploit an area about which so little is known. Paradoxically, this effort combines much of the detached objectivity so typical of our analytical time with the proverbial optimism of the indefatigable prospector. As the earliest manned lunar missions will be brief and exploratory in nature, astronauts will not be expected to attempt to exploit any of the possible lunar natural resources. In later missions, with a more extended period of time available for the astronauts to stay on the moon, it may be desirable or even necessary to "live off the land". The resulting exploitation of lunar resources will be intended primarily to reduce the dependence of manned missions upon terrestrial logistic support and to reduce the cost of maintaining lunar bases.

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). An empirical model of a 254mm water-only cyclone treating minus 17001im coal has been developed. The model includes the prediction of by-passing, SG50 corrected, water split and the use of a single equation forthe reduced performance curve of particles in the range 1700-106pm. Particles finer than 106pm did not separate according to specific gravity. Simulations using the model showed the water-only cyclone performance to be dependent more upon feed size distribution than washability when the feed contains high-ash fines, but that, with a deslimed feed, the yield and ash content of the over-flow should be controllable by altering feed rate or feed pulp density.

In this first report, we present a preliminary model based on the simple binary sys¬tem of component B occluded in a matrix of compo¬nent A, for the case where fracture planes can pass with equal ease through A or B. By assuming that the volume fraction of B in AB in the overall matrix is small, which is realistic for many prac¬tical systems, the problem is reduced to a one-¬dimensional treatment which is conceptually easy to understand. The model was programmed for Monte Carlo simulation, and an analytical solution also developed based on the assumption of zero or one mineral fragment per particle. Preliminary ex¬perimental confirmation using a synthetic "mineral¬-host matrix" of known amount and size of B in AB is presented.

This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.
