The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45' north and 116° 30' west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims' end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. The exploration geologist is frequently confronted with the problem of allocating his resources, i.e., exploration effort, among various areas. Although geologic, financial, and logistic considerations influence the allocations, no objective criterion is usually given that determines the optimal allocation. Maximizing the expected gain in information, subject to the constraint of a limited exploration budget, is used as the objective criterion to allocate airborne reconnaissance effort. The information function, I(x), quantifies the expected gain in information, where x is the scale of exploration. To calculate the information function, the following probabilities are required: the probability that an area contains a deposit; the probability that an anomaly is produced by the target; and the probability that an anomaly is produced by a barren area (false signal). Alternatively, the barren areas can be replaced by other targets. To illustrate the allocation method, the optimal number of line kilometers, i.e., the optimal line spacing per area, is determined for an aeromagnetic survey for iron in Egypt.

In traditional construction contracting practice, the owner allocated almost all risks to the contractor, saying in effect, "you deal with all construction problems and all third parties, and don't bother me." In this same tradition, the architect or engineer designed a structure in its finished condition, and if he thought about the construction problems that might be involved in building it, he was careful not to express any opinions on these matters in the contract documents. This feudal attitude fostered two results: 1. Contractors added high contingencies to their bids to cover the costs of risks. 2. Litigation of construction contract claims blossomed. Broadly, the owners lost--the courts reallocated many risks the owners thought they had laid on the contractor. Thoughtful owners and engineers recognized that owners were paying for risks twice --once in bid contingencies and a second time in court. Meanwhile, contractors were not getting rich; they were losing money on delays and disputes, and just about getting even (if they were lucky) in court. And construction law was becoming an increasingly lucrative field--for lawyers. Furthermore, with the growing influx of lawyers onto the construction scene, the owner-contractor-engineer relationship became increasingly an adversary one. The emphasis came to be on culpability rather than capability--who could be held responsible for breaching some contract clause, not who might find a solution to some common problem. This game was played with equal vigor by owners and contractors.

Research at the University of Colorado on southern pine and Douglas-fir piling has determined that the existing building code design stress values of 1200 psi and 1250 psi, as determined by ASTM D-2899, are substantiated; but testing procedures should be revised. All full size piling tests should be standardized at 1/d ratios of 2:1, or confined tests performed. Also, it has been determined that theoretical design values for timber piling should not be based on the lumber criteria of D-245 and D-2555, but instead should follow the pattern set by engineers in the utility industry for timber poles, in accordance with ANSI 05.1.

Gold-copper alloys are shown to form during the cementation of gold on copper in a solution containing 0.25M [S2O32-] at 25oC. The alloy composition is strongly dependent on the initial Cu:Au ratio in solution and ranges from Au3Cu to AuCu3. XPS results for Au, Cu, S, and O are reported as a function of depth through an entire deposited film with an initial solution containing 20 ppm [Au] and 30 ppm [Cu]. The deposit contained about 20 atomic % gold and was predominantly Cu3Au. Underpotential deposition (UPD) theory is discussed as a mechanism for explaining the formation of these alloys. Several other systems that produce alloys during contact reduction/cementation are also discussed.

Solidification processing/casting is increasingly being adopted as the preferred manufacturing technique for the fabrication of net shaped complex geometry components. Modeling of solidification processes is important both for design purposes as well as for understanding the physics of morphological evolution of the solidification microstructure. A fundamental aspect of such modeling involves the precise understanding? of heat transfer through the two phase solid/liquid region. A scheme to do this will be presented where the nonlinearity of the fraction liquid with change in temperature can be incorporated into the numerical calculations. The importance of properly accounting for the non-linear mushy zone will be discussed. Typical processes like squeeze casting and electromagnetic stirring will be discussed to illustrate how precise modeling of the solid/liquid region can aid in the calculation of accurate heat transfer coefficients for these processes.

WITHIN a period considerably less than two decades, the engineering view of alloy steels has greatly changed-both as to their composition, and applications. Inasmuch as the elements used in manufacturing alloy steels are substantially the same as those which have been used for the past two or three generations, a statement like the foregoing may reasonably call for some explanation. The first commercial use of alloy steels in this country dates back to the sixties of the last century, when one of the earliest alloy steel patents, covering the use of chromium, was taken out by Bauer. About ten years later, German and French toolmakers began to introduce tungsten into tool steels. Developments along this line were more or less static for 25 years or more, the tool steel, compositions progressing along lines worked out by Mushet and one or two others in Europe. The next step in advance, made by Taylor and White inn the late nineties, consisted of heat-treating the alloy steels to enable much higher cutting speeds, thus introducing what soon became known as "rapid" or "high-speed" steels. All these developments being aimed toward the improvement of cutting tools, the compositions made were essentially of a hard, brittle nature. Following a different line of development started in the seventies, naval ordnance material began to embrace the nickel steels. These were rapidly popularized, became, and still are, with the addition of one or more elements, as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, standard for heat-treated armor plate. During that period, however, no notable uses were made of alloy steels for engine parts or other high-stress parts where they are now considered indispensable; moreover, the present-day use of metals in the chemical industries was probably not even imagined. After the turn of the century, the necessity for making heavy-duty. machine parts, and especially the develop¬ment of the automobile, caused alloy steels to rapidly supplant plain carbon steels for engineering purposes.

THE problems relating to the construction and use o{ mining equipment are basically the same as those pertaining to equipment in other industries. It is true that much mining equipment is subjected to an unusually severe combination of shock, high stresses, abrasive wear, and corrosive ? conditions, but in other industries, also, equipment must operate under similar adverse conditions, so that their experiences may readily be applied to the problems of the mining industry. Steel and iron are for obvious reasons the most suitable materials for the construction of the greater part of the equipment used in the mining industry. For a large percentage of uses, the ordinary plain carbon-steels and ordinary or unalloyed cast-iron are, and probably will continue to be for a long rime, entirely satisfactory materials. There are, however, many. conditions which cannot be satisfactorily taken care of by these materials, and alloy steels and irons must be used where the greatest possible economy is desired. In general, alloy steels and irons are used where it is necessary or economically desirable to use materials possessing properties superior to plain carbon-steel or ordinary cast-irons, such as: (a) better strength (b) better wear resistance (c) better corrosion resistance (d) better resistance to high temperatures (e) better resistance to low temperatures or combinations of two or more of these advantages. There are also conditions where materials having other special properties are required, such as, for example, certain magnetic or electrical properties for electrical machinery; but in the great majority of cases, one or more of the five advantages listed are the most desired.

Waste form alloys are being developed at Argonne National Laboratory for the disposal of remnant metallic wastes from an electrometallurgical process developed to treat spent nuclear fuel. This metal waste form consists of the fuel cladding (stainless steel or Zircaloy), noble metal fission products (e.g., Ru, Pd, Mo and Tc), and other metallic wastes. The main constituents of the metal waste stream are the cladding hulls (85 to 90 wt%); using the hulls as the dominant alloying component minimizes the overall waste volume as compared to vitrification or metal encapsulation. Two nominal compositions for the waste form are being developed: (1) stainless steel-IS wt% zirconium for stainless steel-clad fuels and (2) zirconium-8 wt% stainless steel for Zircaloy-clad fuels. The noble metal fission products are the primary source of radiation in the metal waste form. However, inclusion of actinides in the metal waste form is being investigated as an option for interim or ultimate storage. Simulated waste form alloys were prepared and analyzed to determine the baseline alloy microstructures and the microstructural distribution of noble metals and actinides. Corrosion tests of the metal waste form alloys indicate that they are highly resistant to corrosion.

Recently, 7xxx aluminum alloys have been evolved into new variants for thick semiproducts which have low amount of 2nd phases and low quench sensitivity. Commercial 7xxx alloys, especially in the thick forgings made of big ingots, often entail microstructural inhomogeneities and concurrent poor mechanical properties due to limited heating ranges and slower quench cooling. In this study, high strength aluminum alloy 7175 and 7050 are adjusted as an attempt to control the equilibrium phases (M-, T- and S-phase) to have optimum microstructure for the thick forging applications. The effects of the relative content of (Zn, Mg, Cu) on the evolutions of the coarse equilibrium phases, hardening response and resultant mechanical properties are investigated. Equilibrium phases (M,T,S) are evolved depending on the constitutional effect, primarily the change of Zn:Mg ratio, and cooling rate following solutionizing. The formation of the T- and S-phases is effectively controlled, and M-phases are homogeneously precipitated in the adjusted (dilute and high Zn:Mg ratio) alloys. It provides extended heating range and lower quench sensitivity than conventional alloys. The attempts ensure the microstructural homogeneity and improved properties, and is expected to be uniquely applicable in 7xxx thick forgings.

"Alloying refining with rare earth elements followed by acid leaching was examined for the potential of upgrading of metallurgical grade silicon. Microstructure study of silicon alloyed with small additions of rare earths showed behavior relatively similar to the influence of calcium addition. After alloying with neodymium the phosphorus content was detected in various intermetallic silicides containing neodymium and iron. The content of lanthanum and neodymium in refined silicon was by several times lower than that of aluminium and calcium. Alloying with lanthanum and neodymium at smaller additions than calcium reduced the phosphorus content down to the same level. The efficiency of lanthanum and neodymium in removal of boron and phosphorus at the 1-2 wt% of their additions and their low solubility in silicon make the alloying with these metals followed by acid leaching an attractive option for the refining route of metallurgical grade silicon up to solar grade.IntroductionA striving for a cheap ""green"" energy directs the research interests in silicon solar cells towards new efficient refining routes for metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si, -98% purity). The silicon price determines up to high extent the solar module's price, so that cheap and efficient metallurgical process is awaited. The research challenge is to fulfil the purity requirements of solar grade silicon (SoG-Si, 6N) by competing with the energy-consuming and environmentally unfriendly Siemens process. Most difficult impurities to remove are boron and phosphorus, so technologies dedicated to their efficient removal attract an attention of industry and academia.Alloying refining (also known as solvent refining) is one of the most promising refining options, which is based on a principle of solid-liquid extraction using limited solubility of impurity elements in solid silicon [ 1]. Various elements were proposed for alloying refining: aluminium [2], calcium [3], tin [4], iron [5], copper [6] etc. The attractiveness of the alloying refining is in decreasing a melting point of the metal mixture and an affinity of the alloying element to the most harmful impurities, especially to boron and phosphorus. However, the difficulties are still faced due to self-solubility of the alloying elements, their low affinity to boron and/or phosphorus, silicon losses and necessity of removal of the silicide impurity phases in an additional step, using acid leaching [7], fractional melting [ 8] etc."

THE characteristics and uses of thermocouples of platinum and the platinum alloys being so well known, this paper will be confined to base-metal couples. During the past decade, there has developed a strong demand for thermocouples made of metals cheaper than the platinum alloys, and suitable for industrial heat measurements. Much research has been clone but only a very limited number of alloys have been found to possess the necessary characteristics for general technical use. In the development of thermocouple alloys it is necessary to consider the following points: The electromotive force and temperature relations; permanency or constancy; reproducibility; manufacturing difficulties; durability; and accuracy in use. The electromotive force developed by the thermocouple should increase with the rise of temperature according to some definite law. It is desirable that the electromotive force should vary directly with the temperature difference of its junctions, in other words, giving a curve linear or nearly so. It is also desirable that the resulting electromotive force be as large as possible for any given range of temperature, thereby insuring greater accuracy of readings.

During an eight month period, January to August 1978, nine bore holes were drilled in the Mikonui River gravels. On account of two rebores required from near bottom, the number of bores is in effect 11. Just on 1300 feet were drilled with an average depth of 120 feet. Depth varied from 102 feet to 133 feet. Penetration on average per hole value, varied from 7.4 to 16.4 feet per day. Gold values were even more erratic. Drill rig used was the Keystone churn drill manufactured locally by the Dispatch Foundary. It is skid mounted and requires a crew of two persons.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

Detailed characteristics of gold from Pliocene auriferous quartz gravels from Waimumu (Southland) have been studied using a combination of optical microscopy, energy dispersive microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The gold at Waimumu is classified as either: 1. detrital gold, or 2. irregular gold. A number of different morphologies a recognisable within each 'gold type'. Evidence is given for an predominently authigenic origin for some of the gold at Waimumu.

Gold production commenced in New Zealand during the gold rush of 1861, and recovery to date is over 900 tonnes, almost 60% of which was alluvial. New Zealand pioneered development of bucket line dredges during the 1880's. The advent of the modern hydraulic excavator and increased gold price led to a resurgence in alluvial production with about one hundred plants in operation in 1988. The processing plants are mainly floating, with throughputs of 50-100m3/hr fed by backhoes of 20-40 tonne operating weight. Some larger plants with more sophisticated recovery systems have commenced over the last few years, with the largest using a 180 tonne backhoe.
