A longwall-based coal mine in Australia, referred to in this paper as AusMine Colliery, experienced windblasts resulting from goaf falls. Windblasts were the cause of serious injuries and threatened the continued operation of the mine. A microseismic early warning system was installed and a significant success rate in providing early warning of large roof instability resulting in high velocity windblasts, has been achieved. Early warning of goafing is accepted as an operational tool on the mine. Severe demands are placed on the operator in terms of 'real time' interpretation. The development of an expert system allowed for a probabilistic approach to achieve automatic alarms. This paper will quantify the success, failure and false alarm rates achieved by manual operation and automatic expert system-based decisions making, respectively.

"The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and success- fully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop set points as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November, 1989, to the end of the mine 's operation in June, 1990, it was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.IntroductionExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. ES proponents make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, an ES should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988)detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."

The permit generation and review process represents both a time consuming and expensive task for industry and government alike. Changes in regulations and in review procedures cause additional delays. This leads to potentially higher costs of doing business and the extension of time for a project to lie started. This paper describes the motivation and methodology of applying an expert system to function in the role of a permit reviewer. The problems of representing the knowledge of the reviewer and regulatory criteria are illustrated. Futhermore, the selection method for the expert system shell is addressed. Finally, a sample review is demonstrated to show the results of applying this artificial intelligence method to the process of permit review.

The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. The current wave of interest in this topic is the result of increased use of titaniferous ores or ilmenite in blast furnace burdens for the purpose of repairing hearth damage. The titanium compounds that promote deposition of ?patching? materials in blast furnaces are the cause of downstream problems in the steelmaking shops. Steelmakers historically have objected to significant amounts of titanium in hot metal (>0.10 % Ti) for several reasons: 1) accretions caused by the TiC.TiN needles that float out of the iron as it cools in transit and in transfers make the accompanying slag sticky and crusty, causing problems in desulfurization and increasing time and Fe yield loss at the subsequent raking, 2) defensive measures have been taken in treatment, such as use of argon for carrier gas, but without technical rationale for this approach, 3) difficulty in removal of the ladle slag by the raker, with subsequent sulfur addition to the vessel charge, and 4) transfer into the BOF and/or formation of a very corrosive TiO2 containing acid slag during the early part of the BOF blow which, in addition to causing lining damage, results in loss of sulfur removal capability by the vessel slag. Based on a conceptual analysis of the metal-slag-atmosphere interactions during transfer ladle desulfurization treatment, a mechanism is postulated for the apparent effectiveness of the use of argon in reducing the deleterious effect of titanium and an alternate technique, possibly more effective, is proposed. As probably the use of argon causes increased exposure to atmospheric oxidation of the titanium carbonitrides contained in the ladle slag, the same benefit can be obtained by use of either oxygen or an air blast to oxidize the noxious reaction compounds. Validity of the concept has been demonstrated in a pilot plant setting. These issues, and related effects on testing the hot metal, are examined in detail with reference to the literature and plant and laboratory experience.

The Bureau of Mines (USBM), US Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

INTRODUCTION THE flotation process for the concentration of ores is a method by means of which one or more of the minerals in the ore (usually the valuable ones) are picked up by means of a liquid film and floated at the surface of .a mass of fluid pulp. Here they are separated from the other minerals, which remain immersed in the body of the pulp. In general, the minerals which are floated are sulphides of metallic luster, but some other minerals of metallic luster such as graphite and some sulphides with adamantine luster, such as sphalerite and cinnabar, are amenable to treatment by the process. The importance of flotation lie's in the fact that it is primarily a "slimes process" by means of which the particles of valuable mineral, too fine for efficient gravity concentration, are saved with a high percentage of recovery. Recoveries in the mills treating low-grade copper sulphide ores have been advanced 10 to 20 per cent. by the installation of the process and similar increased savings have been accomplished by the same means in mills treating sulphide ores of zinc and lead. When finely ground ore containing sulphides mixed with a siliceous or earthy gangue is brought gently onto the surface of a body of water, in a direction forming an acute angle with the surface of the water, a considerable portion of the sulphide constituent of the ore floats on the surface of the liquid, while the gangue sinks. This is the so-called film flotation, exemplified by the Wood and Macquisten processes. When gas bubbles are introduced into a fluid pulp composed of finely ground ore and water, to which has been added (1) a small amount of certain oils, or (2) a small amount of certain acids or acid salts, or (3) a small amount of certain alkalis or alkaline salts, or (4) a small amount of a mixture of oil with acid or alkali, the sulphide particles in the ore are brought to the surface on the gas bubbles. OLIVER C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah (communication to, the Secretary*).-This paper has appealed to me as being one of the most lucid, well-connected and complete papers on this subject which has been published. To be sure, the concepts called upon in an explanation of the flotation process by these authors are mostly old ones which have been more or less discussed in previous literature, but they have nevertheless been assembled in a most constructive and suggestive manner. We find a new contribution to flotation theory in the effect of fine particles increasing the viscosity of the interfacial film between a liquid and a gas. This phenomenon has been variously hinted at but never definitely stated in accepted scientific terms. The discussion of "contact angles". is very clear and will doubtless be welcomed by those who have not had the opportunity to investigate the literature on this subject, but it is unfortunate that the "hysteresis of the contact angle," observed by Sulman and reported some years ago, is not mentioned or explained. A few other points need discussion in order to call attention to the fact that, while this paper is the best discussion of the subject which has yet appeared, all of the truth has not yet been told.

"Abstract - The Stewart mining camp has a long history of precious and base metal mining. The camp is abundantly mineralized, with more than 200 widespread, varied, vein prospects, deposits and orebodies. These show wide variations in the mineralogy of ore, gangue and alteration assemblages, and wide variations in textures and structural settings. This report establishes the timing of the different metallogenic epochs and suggests a specific exploration application for systematic lead isotope analyses.Galena lead isotope ratios from a range of mineral occurrences indicate that all these varieddeposits formed during two main mineralizing events. Lead isotope data from the Stewart mining camp do not provide absolute ages for the formation of mineral deposits, but the relative distributions of data are consistent with dates determined in other studies. One ore-forming episode occurred in the Barly Jurassic and the other in the Middle Eocene. Both metallogenic epochs were brief, regional-scale phenomena. Sorne deposits from the younger mineralizing episode were em­ placed adjacent to or superimposed on the older deposits.Field and laboratory studies show that the two metallogenic epochs are characterized by different base and precious metal suites: Barly Jurassic gold-silver-zinc-lead-copper; and Middle Eocene silver-lead-zinc. Therefore, showings of different ages have different base and precious metal potentials and deserve different exploration emphasis. Lead isotope studies provide a reliable, cost-effective method for evaluating the age and commodity potential of small or recently discovered mineral showings and for setting exploration priorities on properties with several varied mineral occurrences . The determination of the age and metal potential of a prospect at an early stage of exploration may govern the urgency, intensity or even the necessity for further exploration work."

"A mathematical simulation model has been devised to guide the layout of surface or underground mine workings, drill stations, and drill holes that are established in order to search for tabular ore bodies. The ore bodies may be contained within veins, sedimentary beds (including reefs), or other tabular structures.Programmed for a time-shared digital computer, the model contains both stochastic and deterministic variables. Stochastic or natural variables include the number of ore shoots and their sizes, orientations, locations and values. Deterministic or controllable variables include (i) locations and costs of workings (for underground exploration); (ii) drill station locations and costs; and (iii) drill hole azimuths, inclinations, lengths and deflections (if any).For various assumptions about the natural variables, the model is run while the controllable variables arc changed deliberately. Thus, layouts are devised to determine the percentages of the total number of assumed ore shoots found at different costs. In order to choose among the various layouts, cost-effectiveness measures are calculated."

The Weedy Lake, Tower Lake, and Wedge Lake gold deposits illustrate contrasting styles and different ages of mineralization within the same district. The discovery of these deposits was the result of systematic exploration of gold occurrences noted during research of assessment files. The Weedy Lake and Tower Lake depo its reflect a late-stage gold mineralizing event. The e deposits developed along the same major structural break, and also display simi lar mineralogy and alteration patterns. Mineralization is developed in all the lithologies present. The Wedge Lake property, while having occurrences similar to the Weedy and Tower deposits. has the more important Twin Zone which best fits a volcanogenic exhalative model. The Twin Zone has a complex structural history without a recognizable alteration halo. The setting may be proximal to a hydrothermal vent. Mineralization is hosted within a mixed ulphide/oxide/silicate facies iron formation breccia. and the gold is intimately associated with arsenopyrite. The origin and age of the brecciation is key to understanding the mineralizing event. Traditional prospecting procedures in conjunction with conventional B-horizon soil geochemistry were instrumental in the Twin Zone and Weedy lake disco,•eries. Tower Lake was a prospecting discovery partially defined by previous drill programs. This deposit was also identified by B-horizon oil sampling.

Current attitudes by exploration companies towards working on another party's exploration permit or equivalent vary widely. That this is so is due to the virtual absence, on the one hand, of anything in the mining legislation in any jurisdiction that establishes what are the exclusive rights to explore, as opposed to apply for a mining tenement, that the grant of such an authority conveys on the holder, and on the other hand, of any code of ethics or set of guidelines to proper practise. By contrast, in most states and territories, if not all, it is an offence to enter onto a mining tenement, other than to cross it, without the consent of the holder, although until recently most field personnel would have been unaware of this and most explorers would have transgressed at one time or another. A similar vacuum exists where aerial surveys are concerned. There are in fact no guidelines. It has always been assumed that a party wishing to carry out such a survey was free to do so, without even an obligation to notify the holders of any tenements or permits in the area to be surveyed, let alone make available to them any data from the survey. Concepts of 'geophysical trespass' now being tested in the US also raise the possibility that data won from adjoining ground using geophysical techniques may be privileged. Attitudes now appear to be changing. In the absence of legislation or any code of practise, what does the industry regard as ethical behaviour? Do we need to define the rights and obligations of various parties more clearly, and if so, what should they be and to what extent will it be necessary to confirm them by legislation as opposed to adopting a code of practise? Will the existence of such a code in fact improve corporate practise?

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. Because of these uncertainties, this risk assessment would best be viewed as an exploratory effort. Key words: Diesel, lung cancer, risk assessment

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. An exploratory study has been carried out on the applicability of pre-nucleated feed in pelletising operations. Measurements of the pellet quality parameters showed that iron ore pellets prepared in the above manner, generally meet the specifications required in international pellet traffic. Several potential economic advantages, such as reduced grinding power requirements, increased line productivity and shorter start-up periods, became apparent during the study.

Blackwater Mine is in the central-southern Bowen Basin, immediately south of the township of Blackwater on the Capricorn Highway. The current open cut operation extracts coal from three main seams, designated Top, Middle and Lower, in the Late Permian Rangal Coal Measures cropping out on the eastern flank of the Comet Ridge. Complex geological structures, dominated by E-W normal faults and N-S reverse faults, have significant detrimental effects on coal mining operations. Historical exploration before 2010 involved several types of drilling only to understand structure, coal quality and washability. Hence, although drilling data was combined with limited pit mapping and observation, unknown structures were still often encountered during excavations and led to mining surprises. In 2010 BHP completed 200-line km of closely spaced 2D seismic survey to capture gross and detailed structures followed by fit for purpose structural drilling to confirm major structures in the northern part of the mine. In 2018 a high density 9.2 km2 3D seismic survey was completed in the southern part of the mine. Subsequently, a 17.2 km2 survey was completed in 2020 to cover the northern active mining area. It allowed geoscientists to successfully map previously unknown major faults and seam splits, which could potentially impact the mineability of the area. It is important to note, that faults interpreted using modern high-density 3D data can be interpreted with dramatically higher confidence in the fault dip and azimuth orientation in comparison to the legacy 2D data. Along with targeted drilling, pit mapping and structural interpretation, the outcome adds value to mine planning and operations. This paper outlines recent successful seismic 3D data acquisition and interpretation. In detail, the paper presents case studies on how the data can be incorporated into a structural model to improve geological knowledge, enable geotechnical assessment, and support safe and efficient coal mining in a large and structurally complex mine.
