The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

This paper presents a practical approach for determining the optimal spindle speed and the depth of cut in a milling operation within the ever-increasing economic and technical constrains. Analytical modeling and experimental work has been carried out to predict chatter in such operations. The stability lobes determined from this analysis were then used as a constraint in the optimization of the cutting process. The optimal cutting conditions are determined for two different objectives: maximum metal removal rate and minimum cost per unit. It is demonstrated that this approach can be generalized to impose multi-level constrains, e.g., surface integrity and machining accuracy. The approach presented in this work was examined and validated on three NC milling machines. The productivity improvement, cost reduction, while respecting part quality requirements, is demonstrated.

A thermo-chemical model of the copper P-S converter and a viscosity model for the converter slag have been developed to predict the behavior of magnetite in the converter slag, amounts of slag and matte, compositions of slag and matte, volume of the bath, bath temperature, slag blow endpoint determination, SEMTECH OPC signals, and the viscosity of converter slags. The predictions of bath temperature, slag and matte compositions, and magnetite content in the slag have been validated by the industrial data. The effects of fluxing strategy, returns and skim charges, oxygen enrichment, and temperature on the magnetite formation in the slag have been predicted and discussed. The effect of oxygen potential, SiO2/Fe in slag, detection of slag blow endpoint, and temperature on Fe3O4 content in converter slag, slag viscosity, liquidus temperature of converter slag and skimming operation has been modeled and discussed as well. Some applications of the industrial operations have been presented.

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is a pulse testing technique developed by the telecommunications and power industry for use in locating breaks in cables. Variations of this principle have been utilized in applications pertinent to closure and reclamation of coal operations. This paper focuses on applications of TDR technology in the mining industry including monitoring of slope movement, abandoned mine subsidence, ground water levels and subsurface LNAPLs, landfill cover performance, and consolidation of mine tailings. TDR technology has been particularly effective for remote automated monitoring, and alarm systems have been implemented for monitoring subsidence.

The concept of ultrasonic measurement was originally applied to marine operations. Sonar . . . standing for Sounding, Navigation and Ranging, was developed for military uses. Today Sonar has become very important to the fishing fleets and marine construction industries where its applications cover a wide range of uses our company, in addition to the inair ultrasonic equipment as discussed in this paper, is also deeply involved in marine sonar and works primarily with oceanographic research and fishing industries. Ultrasonics, by simple definition, are sound waves beyond the audible range of the human ear and are generally accepted to be waves over 20,000 cycles per second. When applied to level measurement, the principles of ultrasonics are basically quite simple. A sound pulse is initiated at a point in time and the time interval for the echo from that pulse to return can be interpolated into distance. The speed of sound in air under standard conditions is approximately 1,100 feet per second, or if converted into more meaningful information as related to distance measurement, the time required for sound to travel one foot round trip is 1.78 milliseconds. An early application for ultrasonic level monitoring equipment was in large grain elevators. Prior to ultrasonics, the common practice of inventory measurement was to have an employee walk around the top of these large grain elevators, which are often over 100 feet above ground level, and drop a weighted rope or chain down into the silo to determine the level of the grain. Large-scale variability in process plants and process control can be identified and controlled through disaggregating the overall variability in a process stream. Conventional statistics and Statistical Process Control (SPC) fail to address the concept of stream heterogeneity, therefore fail to identify and distinguish between the various sources of variability in a process stream. A modified set of 445 data from a process plant is used as an example to explain the benefits of variography in process control. Large-scale variability, usually in the form of product composition cycles and chemical cyclic variations may be manifest throughout a sampling system or a process plant, but this type of variability is most easily discernable in one-dimensional process streams. The Moving Average is a powerful tool for identifying large and small scale variability and cyclical behaviour in process streams, while the variogram is a custom built tool that allows the components of variability to be identified and resolved. The positions in the variogram at which the different variance can be read and the nomenclature of these types of variability is described. The transfer of variances converted to standard deviations to the Control Charts, allows an operator to appreciate the appropriateness of Upper and Lower control and specification limits. The overall contribution of the various sources of variability is represented in a pie diagram.

Over the last few years the mining industry has continuously been facing increases in capital and operating costs for new projects; plant expansions and also significant increases in the operating costs of existing plants. To counteract such trend the industry is seeking technologies such as the Vertimill as an option to lower the operating costs of grinding circuits. The benefits the Vertimill offers in terms of lower energy consumption and lower media consumption are well established and documented; such benefits can significantly improve the viability of a new project, plant expansions or upgrading grinding mills that need to be replaced. The paper briefly describes the operation of the Vertimill, recent regrind applications in processing Iron ores where the impact of lower energy and grinding media consumption is very significant because of the large tonnages involved, and also applications as a tertiary and secondary grinding stages of grinding circuits. The paper also highlight the expected role the Vertimill can play in secondary applications and the expected impact on the overall economics of the project.

In the last decade, new developments took place in the area of indoor positioning (or localization). Since the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) cannot be used in underground mines, other technologies are needed for localization. Positioning and communication options today primarily include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Ultra-Wideband (UWB), Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID), etc. Smartphones and tablets currently have an array of sensors and radios, which can provide valuable information to allow indoor localization via various methods. Where mineworkers could keep smartphones with them, they can be highly effective at enabling localization and navigation. Recent applications of these technologies in underground mines have been thoroughly reviewed and examined for the likelihood of their utility for accurate localization where no other means exist. Some critical challenges and gaps that need to be addressed in future research have been identified.

CHEMICAL AN AL YSIS by x-ray emission spectrometry has become increasingly important during the past few years. The method is analogous to optical spectrography ?with x-rays being used instead of light and should not be confused with methods of x-ray diffraction used? for identification of minerals and chemical compounds. X-ray emission spectrometry has many advantages for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Its optimum concentration range is higher than that of the optical spectrograph, and the group of elements which can be detected is not identical to that which can be detected by the optical spectrograph. Elements which can be detected by the x-ray spectrometer are those elements from magnesium (atomic number 12) to uranium (atomic number 92) in the periodic table. The lightest elements in this range have low sensitivities and more specialized equipment is necessary for their detection than for the heavier elements. A large number of applications of x-ray analysis have been directed toward the analysis of ores, metallurgical products, and related materials (see References at end of paper). A more complete bibliography is presented in the Norelco Reporter, Vol. 3, 1956, pp. 37-39. "The Falconbridge Limited approach to employing communication equipment is first, to determine what is required in a given situation, second, to evaluate the possible alternatives, third, to select the most suitable hardware and, fourth, to determine what modifications, if any, are required to ensure not only successful implementation but continued low-cost reliability. Two examples are examined.The first situation required remote video monitoring of an acid loadout station. Several alternatives for linking to theremote site were investigated, including hard-wired, slow-scan and microwave. A comparison of these alternatives is shown and an appraisal of the performance of the selected microwave link is presented.The second situation required direct voice contact between the two members of an underground tram crew. Alternative solutions are described and an evaluation of the selected system- SHF portable radios - is presented.ObjectivesIn general, projects must have four main objectives: (1) to improve the safety of its operations; (2) to reduce its operating and capital costs; (3) to increase the efficiency of its work force; and (4) to increase its productivity. ScopeCommunication, when used wisely, can be a good tool to achieve these objectives. Projects can be kept simple using existing technology and adapting it to a particular task. The Brazilian economy has always presented a strong correlation with the mineral activity. Since colonization days, due to the territorial expansion caused by the explorers search for gold, mining in Brazil became a basic sector of national economy. Currently, the Brazilian mineral sector¹ estimates a 550% production increment (Figure 1A) in the last 10 years, reaching the US$ 50 billion value, reflecting the increased global demand for raw materials from mineral origin. According to the Brazilian Constitution², mineral resources belong to the Federal State and, consequently, their exploitation must be authorized, under penalty of engendering federal crime. Furthermore, activities of this nature are prone to cause environmental degradation such as, but not limited to, deforestation, pollution, soil deterioration and water contamination. The GPEMA represents the forensics group of the Brazilian Federal Police responsible for the technical analysis of traces related to crimes against the environment and consequently, illegal mining cases.

In engineering design of operators? compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment, and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomic principles within the collective design process ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity beyond expectations.

Accurately modeling and predicting long term mill throughput is one of the challenges facing metallurgists, geologists and mine engineers in their quest to consistently deliver accurate life of mine business plans. Batu Hijau has systematically improved long and short term mill throughput predictions since feasibility and commissioning in 1999. This has been achieved through a combination of ongoing improvement to the geology ore hardness and grade characterisation model, drill and blast optimisation and, by application of these data to model mill throughput. Batu Hijau has demonstrated the ability to consistently estimate long term mill throughput within ±2% accuracy. Aside from reliably predicting expected production rates with the existing plant configuration, this predictive ability provides a solid foundation for identifying operating and design criteria for short term grinding circuit optimisation and future expansions. This paper discusses ongoing throughput prediction model development at Batu Hijau based on geo-metallurgical characterisation. Also discussed are tools used for day to day production performance management. This includes on line "Mine to Mill" variable monitoring to improve operations parameter ecision making and performance assessment.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines.
