Many mining companies routinely use benchmarking to review their operational activities and associated costs. The aim is to measure operational performance against industry norms, and identify areas where a company is performing better or worse than industry best practice. The goal is continuous improvement.In general, mine technical services, including mining geology activities, are not routinely benchmarked. There are exceptions, such as the cost of drilling per metre and the average discovery cost per unit of metal, but generally mining geology activities are only included indirectly in mining benchmarking studies.Aspects of benchmarking can play a critical role in assisting mining geologists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide. Industry norms for many generic mining geology functions have not been developed and measured, and therefore it is impossible to use external benchmarking to assess performance against other mines. But when used in parallel with quantifying the value of mining geology functions and establishing strategic goals for the team, key components of benchmarking methodology can provide essential feedback on how a team is performing against these strategic goals.CITATION:Berry, M, 2014. The cost of production from truck and loader fleets is influenced by management development of the culture of the organisation, work practices, systems and procedures of the production and maintenance teams. Establishing if the cost of production is the best that can be achieved then requires the measurement of results against established standards of performance. This paper provides a series of discussion points of the factors that influence the cost of production from men and machines for large scale open pit mining operation and provides some suggested performance standards in the form of Benchmarks. Most of the references have been drawn from established large scale deep pit mines in USA, Canada and Australia which have had to implement and constantly fine tune cost efficiencies in order to survive. The discussion provides:ò a review of priorities or the relative importance of the various cost elements for a mining system;ò suggestions of systems and procedures for the operation and maintenance of machines which are considered to yield the best overall results;ò examples of operations that have developed and implemented management systems and controls that are achieving good results in specific functions; andò suggested benchmarks of performance.

THE ability of galvanized sheet steel to withstand severe bending is of very great importance as relates to all such sheet material which, in service, is not used in the flat condition in which it is purchased. A "bend-test" clause is found in, all specifications for material of this kind. In the attempt to draw up a specification for galvanized sheet steel the subcommittee of the Federal Specifications Board having this work in charge, soon found that there was a surprising lack of published data and apparently very little available from manufacturing sources upon which to sustain or reject the various requirements embodied in the tentative specification which, in turn, had been based largely upon other specifications submitted to the subcommittee for this class of material. Specifications from 25 sources were received; 10 Government specifications, 10 from private users of such material, and five from manufacturers. The main points raised were: (1) The minimum mandrel thickness, expressed in terms of the thickness of the sheet tested, over which sheets with different weights of coating can be bent 180°, without serious damage to the coating; (2) the minimum radius of curvature on the inside of the angle in 90°-bends in such material; (3) effect of double seaming on the coating; (4) uniformity in the thickness of coating over a sheet, particularly as relates to the results of bend tests. In view of the uncertainty existing, it was considered very desirable for the subcommittee to conduct a series of tests in order to secure reliable information.

The Bendigo Goldfield is AustraliaÆs second largest goldfield, having produced 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Development of the modern decline mine, initially for underground exploration and bulk sampling, commenced in 1998. The project is targeting new reefs below and along from historic workings beneath the city of Bendigo. The major technical challenge for the project is the inability to solely use drill core gold assays to estimate the grade of reefs, due to the coarsegrained nature of gold mineralisation, known as the nugget effect. In 2002, a program of bulk sampling commenced, resulting in the development of factors for converting drill hole grades to in situ reef grades. In mid 2006 commercial production commenced following the construction of a 600 000 t/yr processing plant adjacent to the Kangaroo Flat Mine portal, with plant feed being derived from four reefs in the Sheepshead and Deborah lines of reef. In early 2007 it became clear that the initial ore reserves had been overestimated, leading to an immediate change of strategy from production to exploration. A cash conservation program was also put in place. Exploration refocused onto the more historically productive Garden Gully and New Chum lines of reef, whilst a new grade estimation tool based primarily on the visual assessment of drill core was implemented. Immediate exploration success occurred with the discovery of four reefs in the Garden Gully line in early 2007. Successful step-out drilling during the year led to the decision to undertake trial mining in Gill reef. Trial production commenced in June 2008 and includes the processing of discrete ore blocks and the introduction of selective mining techniques. This paper examines the steps that have been taken to refocus exploration and to gain confidence in new exploration results, particularly through the visual grade estimation technique and assessment of trial mining Gill reef on the Garden Gully line. In addition, project factors relating to human skills, community relationships and financial management in a dynamic external environment are also addressed.

Bendigo is AustraliaÆs second-most productive goldfield, having produced some 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Bendigo Mining Limited (BML), the sole lease-holder of the Bendigo Goldfield, is developing a mine that is planned to produce ore from beneath the historical workings for at least the next 25 years. The high-grade Bendigo reefs occur in the proximity of the chevron anticlines, which characterise the goldfield. Typically the reefs display relatively small cross-sectional areas and large (subhorizontal) strike dimensions. They occur in clusters due to interrelated structural controls. Most of the gold occurs as visible grains and laminae, and as such grade estimation is not amenable to ænormalÆ sampling and estimation techniques. The initial phases of exploration and development of the mine focused on understanding and resolving these sampling and estimation issues. In 2005, BML reviewed and updated the March 2004 Feasibility Study, refining the life of mine development strategy. The strategy fundamentally aims to exploit the 11 million ounce Inferred Resource and additional exploration potential by developing the current Kangaroo Flat Mine to produce ore at an initial rate of 450 000 t/yr in 2006/07, expanding to 600 000 t/yr by 2009/10; and developing the Eaglehawk Mine to produce 1 Mt/yr by 2011/12. Ore will be processed initially at the Kangaroo Flat site, and from 2011/12 also at the Eaglehawk Mine 1 Mt/yr processing plant. The two mines will connect underground in 2009. Total ore treatment capacity will be 1.6 Mt/yr, producing 600 000 oz/yr from a head grade of 12.7 g/t gold. The project is planned to operate for 25 years, processing 33.6 Mt of ore producing 13.7 Moz of gold. To achieve this production rate, the exploration and ore delineation programs will require up to 16 diamond drill rigs producing over 200 km of core per year. At the same time, approximately 8 km of on-reef development must be monitored and typically 18 stopes managed concurrently. The processing plants will be located in geographically constrained areas, which will limit the ability for selective stockpiling and campaign treatment.

Environmentally correct composites, made from natural fibers, are among the most investigated and applied today. In this paper, we investigate the mechanical behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with continuous fique fibers, through bending tensile tests. Specimens containing 0, 10, 20 and 30% in volume of fique fiber were aligned along the entire length of a mold to create plates of these composites, those plates were cut following the ASTM standard to obtained bending tests specimens. The test was conducted in a Instron Machine and the fractured specimens were analyzed by SEM, the results showed the increase in the materials tensile properties with the increase of fiber amount.

The bending strength and flexural stiffness of a micropile at its threaded connection is less than its intact strength and may fail due to thread slippage or by fracture through the pin (reduced cross-sectional area of male threads in the threaded zone of the casing). The mode of failure depends on the reduction in cross-section necessary for machining the threads, and details of the threaded connection such as the length of threaded connection, size and shape of threads, and the thread density (threads per inch). Based on data from bending tests conducted on 9-5/8 inch diameter micropile casing, a method has been developed to predict the ultimate moment capacity and initial bending stiffness of round threaded micropile connections. Two modes of failure were observed from four-point bending tests conducted at the University of Illinois on 9-5/8 inch casing with round threads. Threaded micropile casing connections with an effective thread length of 1.35 inches typically failed by slippage at the threads (jump out), while connections using an effective thread length of 1.89 inches failed by fracture of the pin. These two failure modes were described by W.O. Clinedinst in his report to the American Petroleum Institute on tension tests of threaded pipe casing. Clinedinst developed an empirical formula to determine the tensile strength of threaded connections. A method to predict moment capacity for threaded micropile connections by modeling the micropile cross-section and applying Clinedinst?s equation to determine the max tensile stress along the threaded connection while satisfying force equilibrium is proposed. The predicted moment capacity for threaded connections using this approach is within ten percent of measured for both modes of failure observed from the bending tests.

Iron ore mining in the Adirondack region of northern New York dates back to the Revolutionary War. It is recorded that Benedict Arnold in his campaigns in the Lake Champlain area during the American Revolution utilized the local ores to produce armament and cannon balls. Through the efforts of early pioneers, the iron mining industry in northern New York gained impetus so that in the 1880's mines in the area accounted for nearly one fourth of the iron ore produced in the United States. Both magnetite and red hematite ores were mined during this period. With the discovery of the Lake Superior ores, the iron ore industry in New York started to decline and remained relatively unimportant until 1938. Modern day methods of mining and beneficiating sufficiently high tonnages of low-grade ores to justify the large expenditures for plant and equipment prompted a resurgence in northern New York mining. During the past several years, the production of iron ore from the Adirondack magnetites has greatly increased, and production which amounted to .6%, of the United States total during the 1918-1928 period (Mining and Metallurgy, November 1943) has been increased to 2.85% of the total in 1948. Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. "The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northest of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The present paper will describe the methodology used to successfully prove that gold of the Detour Lake Mine ore is mostly concentrated into the fine size fraction of the blasted rocks. It will describe the various options possible to create value from this ore property.IntroductionThe purpose of this test work was to determine the grade of the pebbles and consider if there was value into discarding the pebbles and replacing the material by fresh feed.1. Pebble samplingThe pebbles were sampled and assayed for grade every day for 3 months. After 3 months of sampling, the results showed that the pebbles only carried 28% of the fresh feed grade. This phenomenon can possibly be explained by the fact the gold is located into area of fracture in the rocks.January-March 2014 – Pebble assay average• Line #1 = 0.222 g. Au/t• Line#2 = 0.275 g. Au/t• Head grade = 0.88 g. Au/t2. Crushing and grinding circuit surveysWith the above information, a grinding circuit survey was planned. The purpose of the survey was to build a JKSIMMET model of the grinding circuit for mill optimization but also to understand the deportment of gold into various size fractions that may explain why there is so little gold in the pebbles. All streams and size fractions was analysed for particle size analysis and for gold.Since Detour has dual grinding lines, both circuits were sample at the end of May. Two supplemental survey of the secondary crushers were also done and a survey of the gyratory crusher."

Titanium (ilmenite) concentrate was extracted from a New Zealandilmeno-magnetite deposit. Tailings from the existing processing line at the Waikato North Head ironsand concentration plant were used as a raw material feed. The titanium bearing mineral extracted was defined as intergrowths of ilmenite and hematite in the size range below 150 um. The Owen-Honda equation was used to determine the conditions forilmenite/hematite magnetic separation. Three distinct regions of magnetic field strength for the mineral separation have been defined. Theoretical estimates from this calculation have been confirmed experimentally. Ilmenite concentrate was obtained using medium field magnetic andelectrostatic separation. The final material contains 40.6 - 42 per cent TiO2 and 39.1 - 39.8 per cent Fe (total). The actual yield from extraction was about seven per cent of the Zircon, leucoxene and monazite were found as byproducts of thetitanium concentration process. Preliminary experiments have shown the viability of industrial zircon benefication.

The hardening con-stituent is a nickel-silicon compound.1 The quenching temperature necessary to pro-duce hardening by a subsequent aging treatment is a function of the composition and extends from about 700'C. to ()50'C.; the aging temperature range extends from 400° to 600°C. The work carried out by the authors of this paper was confined to cast alloys having compositions within the ranges of 1.5 to 3.00 per cent Ni; 0.4 to 0.75 per cent Si; balance, copper.

A method to improve the quality of Magmnt zinc concentrates to become acceptable feed to an electrolytic zinc refinery. The magnesia content of zinc concentrates produced was too high due to particle locking with the sphalerite in coarse fractions. Regrinding of the concentrates to a very fine particle size and then refloating the sphalerite was chosen to eliminate a sufficient amount of the magnesia to make the concentrates acceptable.

Prior to 1975, lead-based paints were commonly used in protecting steel structures. Because of the toxic effects of lead on human health and the environment, their use has been significantly reduced. However, problems with these paints persist when they are removed during normal maintenance by pneumatic blasting with mineral abrasives. Technologies are developed to contain the spent abrasive and paint during blasting operations. This paper reports on A study to identify beneficial reuses for the spent blasting material. Nine samples were gathered from different projects within Pennsylvania. The samples were thoroughly characterized with regard to composition, morphology, and EP and TCLP leach test performance. Potential reuse applications will be reviewed with regard to technical adequacy, economics, and environmental constraints.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a possibilidade de ajustar as características do biogás produzido a partir da fermentação de vinhaça de modo a torná-lo intercambiável com o Gás Natural (GN), ou um GN substituto (GNS) com características que permitam introduzi-lo na rede de distribuição. São considerados aspectos normativos e técnicos associados à composição química e comportamento durante processo de combustão visando o atendimento aos requisitos normativos estabelecidos para o GN. O trabalho considera a vinhaça, rejeito da produção de etanol a partir da cana-de-açúcar, como fonte para produção do biogás em razão da grande disponibilidade deste resíduo do setor sucroalcooleiro. O Estado de São Paulo (ESP) é tratado com destaque, uma vez que este concentra a maior parte da produção do setor sucroalcooleiro no Brasil. Cálculos de razões de mistura tratada com gases de ajuste foram realizados para verificação das proporções necessárias que viabilizam a utilização da mistura como GNS, tendo como referência especificações da ANP. Os resultados do estudo indicam que a alternativa de geração e beneficiamento de biogás da vinhaça é uma opção tecnicamente viável de conversão de fração considerável deste resíduo do setor sucroalcooleiro em gás com características similares ao GN. Ademais, a alternativa proporciona a valoração do conteúdo orgânico do resíduo, com redução da contaminação dos solos no processo de reaproveitamento dos nutrientes nos processos de fertirrigação.

The Grootegeluk coal beneficiation plant is situated near Ellisras in the Waterberg coal= field in the Transvaal, RSA. At this plant 15 million tons of coal bearing material per annum are beneficiated by means of two-stage heavy medium bath and cyclone plants. Because of the very low yield of 12 % coking coal product, run= ping costs are of the - utmost importance. For this reason extensive tests were carried out to establish the most effective crushing and bene= ficiation methods and suitable aquipment. At the second heavy medium separation stage, the near-gravity material (+ 0,1. g/cc) amounts to 45 % and daily plant performance ana=lysis is required to ensure acceptable plant efficiency. Beneficiation processes for the -0,5 mm coal originally considered were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy medium cyclones and water- only cyclones. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further test work was done to enable selection of the equipment most suitable for the particular requirements.

WHEN one thinks of Minnesota iron ore, one thinks of big open pits, where high- grade ore is simply scooped up with a power shovel, loaded into cars, and hauled away for shipment to the blast furnace. On the western end of the Mesabi range, however, are large tonnages of iron ore which contain too much silica to be used directly in the blast furnace, and these ores must first be concentrated to a purer form. The Mesabi range is about 100 miles long and a maximum of 3 miles wide. The iron formation, which in its unaltered form is called taconite: consists of a banded iron- bearing chert. Where the high-grade ore bodies occur, these have resulted from folding and cracking with sub- sequent leaching out of the silica, leaving the iron oxide behind. The big open pits and the underground mines are situated in these concentrations.

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)
